Just finished the first world and I might take a break until tomorrow; try to make it last instead of marathoning.  I did go out to Target this morning and bought a blue 3DS XL, but downloaded NSMB2 as soon as the system transfer completed.  As someone who never saw a DSi XL in person, all I can say is holy...crap.  I would choose it as my weapon in the hunger games.

It's a way to support traditional gameplay while still driving it forward instead of sidestepping the traditional stuff entirely.  I for one am happy about this.

TalkBack / Re: A Hidden Gem and a Nostalgic Platformer
« on: August 14, 2012, 06:07:58 PM »
Wario Land is a tougher call. I have very fond memories of playing this game, and uncovering the myriad of secrets each level as I worked to build the highest possible coin total I could, but the slow pace and relatively uninspired level design doesn't hold up well years later. Worth it for nostalgia alone in my case... but hard to recommend to anyone who hasn't played the game in their past.

Well, the only Wario Land game I had ever played before picking the VC release was Shake It and I personally fell in love with the game boy game.  I thought the platforming was a lot of fun and searching for all of the treasures after my first time beating the game was challenging in the best way.  Maybe I'm just an outlier, but I've beaten the game three times since it release a few weeks ago and it's quickly become one of my favorite platformers on the 3DS.

Glad (if a bit surprised) to hear it!  I don't want to oversell the game due to personal nostalgia, and really didn't think people would be so excited about this game.  Would love to be wrong about that.

I think I'm a special case because platforming games are my favorite genre and the kind of game at which I'm most skilled (2D or 3D).  I'm ravenous about playing ones I missed as a youngster.  Handheld gaming was never a huge part of my childhood so it's been amazing getting to play game boy games like the Super Mario Lands, Adventure Island, Donkey Kong '94, and Kirby's Dream Land.

Disco....balls.

I see what you did there.

Unintentional, but I'll try to incorporate more user name related puns in future.

Let's hope that development of this game is "stayin' alive"!

Unless there's some kind of announcement regarding the new Castlevania, that means Paper Mario and Epic Mickey are the only retail 3DS games I foresee purchasing over the last four months of the year.  Kind of sucks...

I'm quite surprised that Luigi's Mansion 2 has been pushed back to "the first half of 2013," a pretty wide window.  It's a shame, that was the Nintendo-published 3DS title I was most looking forward to this autumn.

Also, what the ****? Castlevania is mentioned precisely zero times in this press release.  Guess that's a 2013 delay as well.

While we're starting to sound like a broken record, yes I feel like this game could easily have incorporated an online leaderboard that accesses your friends list.

I don't thin Assassin's Creed III's release date as any impact on the Wii U's release date. You didn't see people saying it would come out in August because that is when Darksiders II came out. I still think November 18 (the Sunday before Black Friday, their traditional release date for GCN/Wii/DS) is most likely for North America. Europe and Oceania in early to mid December. Japan maybe late November.

To be fair, Assassin's Creed is a much more commercially successful franchise.  I think the first two sold about 10 million each, while the first Darksiders may not have even cracked a million.

I really like the way they incorporated the new raccoon tail hover animation from Super Mario 3D Land into this game.

TalkBack / Re: The Potential for an October Wii U Launch
« on: August 10, 2012, 01:48:06 PM »
They should launch it in August, because that was when the Super Nintendo launched. The Wii U is to the Wii what the Super Nintendo was to the NES, so it makes sense to replicate the August release schedule.

That is literally the most inane thing I've heard all week.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: How Can Nintendo Revitalize the Virtual Console?
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:52:50 AM »
First of all, please make the promised transferability of titles from the Wii to the Wii U as painless as possible.  Please.

Second, this probably goes without saying, but the Wii U has to have save states like the 3DS.  Not just the "pick up where you left off" save state, but the one you can make whenever you want.  I've been gaming since the late-80s and I am not ashamed to admit that these days I don't have the patience to finish NES-era games without this feature.  It'd be nice if this feature was available on the NES/SNES titles I already own on my Wii once they transfer.  If that happens, I may finally beat Ninja Gaiden for the first time.

I feel like the synchronization of virtual console between the Wii U and the 3DS is something Nintendo would never do.  I'm not holding breath for it, at least.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 110: Very Serious

EPISODE SPOILERS BELOW.  I'LL BLACK OUT THE GAME BUT THERE'S PLENTY OF CONTEXT CLUES FOR GUESSING WHAT THE GAME IS!

Oh man, hearing the music from the game I requested always brings back a flood of memories.  I remember when I was 5, my mom and brother coming home from the mall with a Super Mario World-packed-in SNES and Pilotwings.  I loved playing it, but the physics of the game were a little much for my 5-year-old brain to grasp in any nuanced way, but I really loved watching my brother play.  For hours.  And hours.  I'll never forget the music and look of utter disappointment on the face Big Al, the final instructor in the game, when he would fail the incredibly difficult last hang-glider section.  I love the music from the final level of the game, the first selection played in the episode, and the quirky voice synthesizing in the game is fantastic.

Thanks for picking this game TYP!

I like how the undercurrent of homoeroticism in this podcast has invaded even the sub-headline now! :P:

Seriously though, what a fantastic celebration of not just the podcast, but the last generation of Nintendo gaming.  It was great to hear Gui's defense of some of the company's shortcomings in the past 6 years, and you didn't come off as an apologist!

Here's to 300 more episodes of RFN and another generation of playing great games on the Wii U and 3DS!

I can agree with that, but I could also see some publishers just opting not to release games on the Wii U just to avoid the development cost of adding GamePad functionality instead of an easier port using the Pro Controller, since there won't be a guaranteed base of people with that peripheral.  It's no skin off my nose, I buy Nintendo consoles mainly for the first party games anyway, but I could still see it happening again (like on Wii).

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wario Land (3DS Virtual Console)
« on: August 02, 2012, 05:49:42 PM »
Oh man I blasted through it this past Saturday.  Such a fantastic platformer.  Now I'm going for all of the treasures.  I have to admit, I've had to use GameFAQs for a few of 'em.  I mean, there was one treasure behind a hidden door that had literally NO indication that it was there!  Just a random platform where you would have to just happen to press up while standing in exactly the right place.  But still, since my first handheld was the Game Boy Color I was really looking forward to playing this for the first time.

246
Glad to see it'll support the Pro Controller.  I still think that if Nintendo wants 3rd party support that's truly one-to-one with the other platforms they will have to pack in the Pro with the system.  One GamePad, one Pro Controller, assume that people already have Wii-motes because, let's face it, most people do.  Of course then it will be harder to default to Motion Plus across the board.   Man, they've really painted themselves in a corner with this peripheral nonsense, haven't they?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What's the problem with Community Nights?
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:55:00 PM »
I try to participate in every Mario Kart night, but I decided Mario Tennis Open was NOT worth it at $40 so did not buy it and I cannot stand the on-the-ground controls of Kid Icarus and all the multiplayer gameplay is on the ground.  I will not be buying Heroes of Ruin.  As a relative newcomer to the forums I love the community nights when I can participate, even if I have yet to get first place in a kart race  ;D

Oh and PS 10 PM sounds good to me.  Perfect way to end a night.

Oh oh and PPS I can't wait until we can have these community nights on a Nintendo CONSOLE!  Wonder of wonders.

I really wish I could participate in the Retroactive, my favorite local games store even has a used copy of Wario Land 4 in stock according to their website!  But I sold off my DS Lite last year.... :(.  Either way, it was fantastic to hear Greg again and I can't wait for RFN Part CCC!
