TalkBack / Re: Comparing Wii & Wii U Launch Lines

I agree that it is partially due to just changing times and whatnot.  But I also think that Nintendo may have underestimated the amount of apathy with the Wii brand that grew over the last 2-3 years.  I've told many people (colleagues, friends, family) about the Wii U coming out and the most common reaction I've heard is, "Oh god, not another one."  Obviously I'm on board with the new console, but I'll be interested to see if others are as well.  This could be a Nintendo generation analogous to the Gamecube: not a failure by any means, but not an unparalleled success either.

Hey guys, like Flames_of_chaos said, let's take full advantage of adding each other through the 'Search Users' function of the Miiverse app.  It's much better than the adding through the Friends menu because I might miss some of you on the thread.  I think it's crazy that they didn't integrate the Friends and the Miiverse interfaces.

if you are using bus powered are you using dual usb plugs?

I'm not right now.  I can't seem to find a cable from Toshiba that would plug into my hard drive.

Mine actually freezes up completely every time I try to use mine.  I had to unplug it from the wall to make it turn off.  I'm also using a bus-powered drive which Nintendo doesn't officially "recommend."

I think it's really hilarious that you return to the Wii U menu from Wii mode by launching it like any other Wii channel.  "Oh time to boot up the Wii U channel!'

I'm leaving pretty soon for Wal-Mart.  I've treated that layaway receipt like it was a precious jewel for the past month.  I'm getting it at midnight but I'm not sure I'll be able to stay awake to play the system now that we know the day one update will take an hour+.  At least I'll be able to wake up and play in my pajamas!  ;D

I find it funny that a "day one update" not being available before "day one" is concerning lol.  I do get what you mean though, one would assume it'll be available for all the press to use but if its called a "day one update", I'd expect it'll be going up on day one.  Now if tomorrow the update is not coming through, then I'll be worried.  Regardless though, as long as the thing plays games, all the other stuff I can wait for.

True true, I'm hoping it'll available right at midnight (or 12:30 or whenever I get home) but if it isn't I guess it'll give me a chance to give Nintendoland a fair shake because once I have Mario U that game will probably be swept aside for a while.

So if you follow games journalists that got pre-launch units on Twitter, you may have heard that the 'Day One' update still hasn't gone live....concerning to say the least.  I've been planning on buying NSMBU through the eShop so if the shop isn't there when I bring my Wii U home I will be very sad indeed.

Just saw this on IGN:

Quote

Bus-Powered vs. Self-Powered vs. USB 3.0

Perhaps the most important detail concerning Wii U and hard drives is this - self-powered drives (i.e. ones that you not only connect by USB but also power through an AC adapter plugged into an outlet) will definitely work with the system. Bus-powered discs, apparently, either won't work until a future update or won't be directly confirmed by Nintendo as able to work until a future time. Either way, it seems as though self-powered HDDs are the better option at this point.
Some drives are able to be powered only through USB 3.0. As we noted in our original story (below), 3.0 drives are not promised to work, though Nintendo has clarified these devices will effectively operate at USB 2.0.

Ah crap, I bought a bus-powered hard drive last weekend specifically for my Wii U.  It does say bus-powered just isn't "directly confirmed" so I guess it'll be a gamble when I bring the system home later tonight!

Apparently Netflix has said that its Wii U app will be available Day 1 but won't be incorporated into TVii until next year.

This is some bullshit.  I mean, I guess I want them to get the services whipped into shape before making them live, but this means I will have to keep my Wii hooked up to watch Netflix/Hulu until these are available on Wii U. Not the end of the world, but definitely annoying.

IGN put up some new videos of levels in NSMBU that look pretty cool:

But the biggest takeaway for me is that THE ANNOYING CHIPMUNK VOICE MUSIC IS STILL USED IN THIS GAME!.  Nooooooo.  For some reason I don't remember hearing that before in other videos, maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

14 minute videowith bill Trinen about the nintendo network.

About to watch it.

Why was he staring at a tangerine at the end of the video... :confused;

Anyway, I wonder why NOA didn't do their own Nintendo Direct to discuss the online functionality of the Wii U.

Guess I won't be playing them any time soon...the game gets so freakin' hard and I have too many other games begging for my attention.

193
I also did the Wal-Mart layaway thang today.  I had tried to pre-order that stupid bundle on their website a month back, and now I'm glad that it didn't work out.  Would it still be a good idea to show up pretty early for the midnight launch even if I have one reserved?  I know with some stores a preorder don't mean a whole heck of a lot.

194
Guess that's the reasoning behind the title of the game.

TalkBack / Re: Rhythm Thief Receiving Price Cut in Japan

I quit playing this game in frustration because of the hang-glider rhythm game.  I'll get back to at some point...maybe.  Does anyone who's finished the game know if that's near the end?

196

I still can't believe that demand is this high.   None of the press was favorable around the Nintendo Direct.   Which is leading me to suspect that there is a serious manufacturing problem.   I think the 3DS shipped...what, 2 million units for launch for North America?   I suspect the Wii U is a whole lot smaller...I bet 500,000 units available at launch, maybe even less.

I'm guessing that retailers just don't know the exact numbers that they're going to get yet and wanted to play it safe on the earliest pre-orders.  I bet they'll open them back up again in October or something when they have more concrete information.  Also, you can bet they are going to manufacture a hell of a lot more than 500,000 units for launch.  I'll eat my shoe if I'm wrong.

197
Well, I just placed my order for one of those Walmart.com bundles.  I really wanted to hold out for Amazon taking pre-orders (I have enough Amazon giftcard money saved up to cover the system and a game), but it's just not looking likely and I didn't want to be left out in the cold when even Wal-Mart sells out of preorders.

Edit: One thing I would like to point, though, is that Wal-Mart is charging you the entire amount upfront when you place an order, no small pre-order fee, but all $450 (plus tax/shipping) for the Deluxe console + game + WiiMote.

Amazon finally at least has a Wii U product page but it's listed as 'currently unavailable'.  Progress...

Edit: I love how on the list of software available at launch NSMBU is listed as 'New Super Mario Bros. Mii'.  Amazon's clearly putting a lot of effort into this.

So I've seen in multiple places (and Reggie said it in the press conference) that the Wii U will support nearly all Wii software and accessories.  I wonder what the exceptions are...

You think Amazon will get Wii U consoles for preorder? They seem to have been on the outs with nintendo for a while. The DSi XL and the 3DS are way above MSRP on Amazon. It's unfortunate because I'd much rather deal with Amazon than go through a brick and mortar store.

Yeah, I'd really like to know as well.  I have a crapload of Amazon giftcard money saved up just itching to be spent on preordering a Wii U.
