TalkBack / Re: The Cave Review

I've downloaded the demo but haven't played it yet.  I view not taking advantage of the Wii U's unique features as not a con.  It's definitely a pro when they are used, but ultimately I just want more games on the platform.  If that means some developers won't add unique features then I'm ok with that.  This is probably because I'm a single platform gamer, though.

Not a new complaint I know, but it's really brutal that all NES games get the $5 price point across the board.  Super Mario 3?  Totally worth 5 bucks.  Ice Climbers?  Not so much.

So this is supposed to be kinda bad, right?  Seems like a pale imitation of Fluidity to me.

Nice of Nintendo to realize 3 months after launch that they'd better actually talk about Wii U stuff.

I know this is nitpicking, but to be fair, it's only been 2 months since launch.

Personally, I would be perfectly happy getting solid release dates for already announced games.  I want as many announced games out before E3 so that Nintendo can't pull a fast one and repeat games they already talked about at last year's E3.

On the Wii U eShop list, The Cave looks mildly interesting, but nothing else does.

I have to vehemently disagree, I am very excited for both Runner 2 and Toki Tori 2.

This is the last Harvest Moon game I'm going to buy, ever.  I realized about mid-Summer of the first year that I keep buying new Harvest Moon games every couple of years in a foolish attempt to re-create the magic of when I played Harvest Moon 64 way back in '99.  However, I'm not 13 years old anymore and I don't have the time to sink into this game that it requires.  I'm sad about that, because I really like these games in principle...just not in practice.

I bought this game yesterday using some deluxe digital reward money before the sale ended.  I wouldn't have given it a chance without the free money but I am very glad that I did.  The gameplay itself is fantastic and addictive.  I kept setting little goals for myself, like 'I'll stop playing when I get to the next catalog' and invariably I would just keep on playing.  One criticism I have is with the story which veers far into 'pretentious indie games' stereotypes, but that doesn't detract in anyway from the fun of going through the catalogs and figuring out combos.

Also, the search simply doesn't work.  I tested out searching for a TV show that I know is on Amazon Prime streaming, and it TVii came up with no results.

Is there not a world map in this game?  I've only played the first few levels and haven't seen one yet.  That's probably going to be the most disappointing thing about the game for me.  I loved the way the world map was used in the first Wario Land.

Oh man, the Puzzle Plank Galaxy music from SMG2 is the perfect, quintessential Mario music to me.

Yeah so this sucks.  The UI is terrible, it just launches the Hulu/Amazon apps instead of playing directly.  They need to work on making this a better service.

Since I don't have cable, the main reason I'm looking forward to TVii is combining Netflix and Hulu into one interface (I'm not an Amazon Prime subscriber).  So I'll play around with it tomorrow, but this won't be useful to me until next year.

Yeah, I'm reluctant to see Seven Psychopaths.  In Bruges was just such a freakin' masterpiece, I don't want to be disappointed.

Agreed. In Bruges was hilarious. Have you seen 'The Guard' by any chance? I'm not sure how wide that release was elsewhere in the world?

I have not seen it, sadly.  I remember it getting an incredibly limited theater release in America, so I've just been hoping for it to show up on Netflix.

It's actually been a pretty interesting season for films this Fall.

In recent weeks I've watched The Master (which was incredible), Killing Them Softly (which was so-so), End of Watch (which was an interesting take on the buddy-cop movie), and more recently Seven Psychopaths (which was fun, but as a huge fan of the McDonagh brothers slightly disappointing).

Yeah, I'm reluctant to see Seven Psychopaths.  In Bruges was just such a freakin' masterpiece, I don't want to be disappointed.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NWR Forums First-Party/Third-Party Top 10 Lists
« on: December 10, 2012, 09:57:50 PM »

I know this doesn't get counted, but I missed this thread the first time around and wanted to put mine out there.
Much of the Wii generation was a period of my life when I wasn't gaming much (I didn't even get a Wii until the end of 2008) so I struggled to come up with 3rd party games I both played and liked so I had to just do a top 5 for that category.  Obviously, as a Nintendo fan since basically birth I played almost every first party game put on the system.

First Party

10. Fluidity
9.   Mario Kart Wii
8.   Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
7.   Wario Land: Shake It!
6.   The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
5.   Donkey Kong Country Returns
4.   Super Mario Galaxy
3.   The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
2.   Metroid Prime Trilogy
1.   Super Mario Galaxy 2

Third Party

5.   Mega Man 9
4.   Okami
3.   Bit.Trip Runner
2.   A Boy and His Blob
1.   Rayman Origins

It appears that part of the recent firmware update was the ability to actually be notified of a friend request from the home screen and through the 'Friend List' app.  I'm glad they did this, but it'd be nice if they'd list these additions on the info about the update.

Not terribly interested, but I would consider downloading it from the eShop if the price was maybe $40 instead of 60.

Well, that was anticlimactic.  I guess there's always the chance that the real fruits of this update won't come to bear until the Nintendo Direct tomorrow.  We shall see.

I don't know why it would be so large but I'm guessing it's related to all the system crashes that are widely reported (mine hasn't, though).

Damn, my download started out as 18 minutes remaining, and it's now over 2 hours remaining.  How do you cancel it and let it go in the background again?

Perhaps related to TVii since it's supposed to come out this month?  Just wishful thinking on my part: every time I have to switch over from Netflix to Hulu, I remember how much I can't wait for TVii.

I got the platinum reward playing cards in the mail today.  They're surprisingly cheap and flimsy for "platinum" playing cards...on the other hand my gold nunchuk should coming soon too!

Yeah I don't hate the NSMB music either, it's just gotten really old.  I mean it used to be that every new Mario game had completely new music from the ground up.
