Nintendo Gaming / Re: A Recipe for a Good Spider-Man Game
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:34:18 PM »
So... essentially, it should be like Batman: Arkham City, except more agile. Meh.

I think any comic book-based video game suffers from an attempt to cover the depth of its title character, and ultimately fails. Which is largely why I think they should be avoided, even if they're "alternate timeline" renditions of character stories. There's just too much mythos and interconnectedness within comic book universes that diehard fans will hate for not being more faithful, and entering fans will dislike for being too cluttered.

Arkham Asylum got very lucky in its concept- locking the character in prison with all his enemies. But Arkham City was an overblown affair that was a bit too big to handle- and the ending was a foolish attempt to make something epic out of a character and a story that is in not way in canon in the first place. Unless that specific "Arkham" franchise is continued, the ending- and even the game, holds no relevance.

The best made superhero game(s), in my opinion, are the X-men Legacy games and the Marvel- Ultimate Alliance series, which attempted to tell comic-faithful stories while also being lighter on the character emphasis because it's a video game- there's no way you can connect with the characters based on the limited resources.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Which was better: Nintendo 64 or Gamecube?

The N64 had wonderful platformers and a slew of games that transitioned into the 3D era very nicely.

But the Gamecube had a better variety. AND ROGUE SQUADRON 2 LOL.

In all seriousness, though. The N64 is one of the best platforming consoles, ever. Other than that, Goldeneye, and maybe a few other games, it didn't do much for me.

Silent Hill has such mixed reviews- I don't know if I'm going to enjoy running from icy freaks with a terrible map. I need something that sells it a little better...

However, Monster Hunter Tri, Sonic Colors, Muramasa, and a lot of others that I haven't even played... I've just heard so many good things about the Wii's thurd party library- of what actually exists, I mean. It's got a ton of variety.

There's been a pretty significant amount of stupidity in regards to the showing this year. Nintendo's not going to upset people with waits like they had for Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, and Paper Mario. It's just unwise to show games off that are further down the line than we know. So by announcing games closer to their actual release, they're ensuring little to no delays.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Which was better: GameCube or Wii?
« on: June 26, 2012, 03:46:37 PM »
Originally counts for a lot too.  Metroid Prime was a very original game on the Gamecube.  That works in its favour.  Both systems had two Metroids each.  Both of the Cube ones were good, one of the Wii ones sucked.  MP3 is also my least favourite of the Metroid Prime Trilogy.  I know a lot of people like the pointer controls but I don't really care for them.  Too much strain on my arm to hold the pointer in the right place and MP3 plays more like a typical FPS.  I like how Metroid Prime isn't a typical FPS.

For Zelda I rule in favour of the Cube.  TP basically cancels itself out since it was released on both systems at the same time and the Cube one doesn't have stupid waggle controls so it wins for me anyway.  The Cube has Four Swords which is really fucking cool and the Wii has no equivalent of it.  Wind Waker is better than Skyward Sword.  SS cuts corners by making us visit the same areas again and again.  Oh and it was the guardians and thankfully WW had none of that chore BS.  I don't think either of those games is as good as the N64 Zeldas but I like WW more than SS.

Mario is one where the Wii wins.  Aside from having more Mario games Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario and Galaxy is the best.  Even with some questionable control issues I would pick SMG over SMS any day of the week.

The Cube had Pikmin, F-Zero and Eternal Darkness.  The Wii did not and what replaced them?  Excitetrucks/bots kind of replaced F-Zero in that it's a racing game.  For what the Wii had that the Cube did not you have Punch-Out! (which I thought was way too conservative; only ONE new character?  What a joke!) and the Wii Series.  Of course I hate the Wii Series so that sure doesn't compare to Pikmin or ED.  Xenoblade however does compare.  The Wii was the dream system for sidescrollers if that really floats your boat.  Personally I felt that they went overboard.

Another problem for the Wii is that as each Nintendo series becomes older the concept becomes staler.  Mario and Zelda can't get me as excited as they used to.  New stuff has to take their place.  The Cube has an advantage in that the IP was still younger and at that point Metroid had yet to go 3D so it got the 3D rebirth that most series got in the N64 days.  I was already getting on Nintendo's jock about creating new IP then but at least we got Pikmin.  The big EAD new IP on the Wii was the Miis.  Obviously I prefer Pikmin.

The Cube also had the benefit that it could wow us visually and Nintendo was able to push their series forward with new technology.  That was not present on the Wii.  It is hard to get excited about new games that don't do anything they couldn't have done on the old system, only they now have waggle.

The Wii also has more infamous duds.  There is no Wii Music, Other M or DK Barrel Blast sullying the Cube lineup (though it does have Kirby Air Ride, the start of Iwata's dream of games requiring zero skill to play).

Still overall the controls are what hurt things on the Wii for me.  Nintendo games often controlled like ****.  This was never a problem on previous Nintendo systems.  A Nintendo game with bad controls was rare and now I consider that the norm.

When I think of my favourite first party Cube games I think of Metroid Prime, Four Swords and the Pikmin games.  One big part of it is that those all provided NEW GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCES.  The Wii's new gameplay experience was stuff like Wii Sports and Wii Fit which are super lame and casual.  For what I'm looking for the Wii didn't provide it like the Cube did.  Though the Cube isn't that great for new experiences either, just better than the Wii was. The last time Nintendo truly came across as consistently innovative was on the N64.
I just bolded most of the statements that I disagree with. I don't think we'll ever get along. :(

Also, have you ever tried doing the checklists in Air Ride? I bought that game when it first came out and I STILL don't have them all.

I mean, clearly you're not a fan of motion controls, and that's okay. But I think you give Nintendo far too little credit for their innovation with the motion control- hell, even what some third parties did with the motion control. But I'm not going to try to sway you on that- it's just not going to happen.

I can't be in this topic anymore...

For 300 bucks, it would be a steal. 350, I think that's a pretty fair price- at least, with a pack-in. But if 300 is just the console, that's okay with me.

Well, in terms of really pushing the envelope, the GC did better. Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Melee, Sunshine, Wind Waker... they were all really good games that altered the formula and did what their predecessor's couldn't do WAY better. All a matter of preference, of course- Sunshine is way better than Galaxy, in my opinion. But I think that the Wii polished the SD graphics and design pretty much to perfection, and there's no doubt that it did have great titles.

I enjoy my Wii games more than my GC ones, but GC had a really solid lineup. I'm very torn on the subject.

3208
Another problem with the Wii is that motion control is ALL it has going for it... and I hate it.  So the Wii is more like the Gamecube had a ten year life cycle, only Nintendo ran out of ideas for it five years ago.  I don't need two Gamecube Mario Karts or SSBs.  There just isn't enough of anything NEW they could do with those ideas except graph on horrible controls.  I can use normal controls for those games but then how does this really differ from the Cube games?
Nah. Mario Kart Wii is awesome, especially because of the Wii Wheel. If you can't enjoy that game for that reason, I feel a great sadness for you.

I agree that SMG's motion controls (well, the Luna Spin) felt tacked on, but there's plenty of other examples in that game that work really well.

3209
I did not consider the idea of locked content already on disk. In retrospect, it would be an interesting selling point, but a little weighty for a DLC concept.

3210
...I didn't mean leveling up.

3211
Okay, so as we all know, the Gamepad has Near Field Communication, which allows physical objects to communicate with the system to add new features and content to games. Sakurai has shown that he's quite fond of utilizing the capabilities of the consoles he's worked on recently, with the 3DS having AR card support, touch screen capabilities, a robust online system, etc.

Now, I think that the partnership with Namco Bandai could have more than a few meanings behind it. Bandai is well-known for making action figures and the like, and I think this could be combined with the NFC in a crucial way.

Smash Bros. has been largely focused on trophies (and toys) ever since its inception, so what better way to provide DLC than through literal trophies? Place them on the NFC and download an all-new character to the Wii U, releasing waves (or even just one) throughout the entire lifetime of the game and the system. But that's not all. What about trophies in different costumes that could add new appearances to your characters in game? With Bandai distributing, there's no doubt of their availability.

I think this could be a clever way to not only prolong the life of the title, but also cause kids to go into a Skylander's like frenzy over the concept. Plus, come on- wouldn't you like to have a nice little collection of Smash Bros. trophies on your shelf?

Of course, I'm not saying the initial roster should be nerfed in any way- there should be a sizable amount of content in the game at release, as Nintendo has stood by with all of their titles in regards to DLC (or lack thereof- I'm including games like Fire Emblem and NSMB2 as reference points).

3212
While nintendo could go westto look for aquistions they would probably be better off picking up tecmo koei. Seems alot of bang for ones buck. Alot of valueable IP would be gained from that as well.

Maybe Sega or THQ would be great before nintendo has to compete with the guys with more money when picking apart the corpses of those guys in about three years. (Sega can easily turn it around, not sure about thq)

Woulnt mind them picking up mistwalker and intergrate them into monolith soft.
I personally think that Japanese developers could do great things if they united under a single banner, especially with the new minds being mixed with the veterans.

3213
See, Japanese gaming shouldn't have to Westernize because its fundamentals are what make it such an enjoyable genre. The unique storytelling, visuals and gameplay are core to what makes them good, and sometime they don't even HAVE good storytelling or visuals. The main idea is that gameplay should not be sacrificed for Western state-of-mind. Some people LIKE Japanese games for what they are- and maybe some of these companies need to realize that they have to downscale in order to continue to bring the sense of individuality and innovation that their past titles possessed.

A lot of people still think that a Link to the Past or Final Fantasy VI are the best games of their kind. These games were not groundbreaking in graphical style, they were created by teams who understood their hardware and exploited it to the max, and created great things. I think it's now a matter of the Japanese game market not being accustomed to the hardware that they're creating games on, because graphics are something that's improved pretty exponentially recently (though in many ways, it's not that great/it will plateau eventually).

I don't get why its wrong to play it safe. Nintendo is in a state of flux and going with known sellers the first year when your trying to foster an install base and the do the more exciting things afterwards.
But see, that's the catch. They're fostering the wrong install base. Sure, this install base will make Nintendo tons of DK barrels of moolah, but when they decide to do more exciting, deeper, and more involved experiences afterwards...will this same casual install base buy these games? Definitely not. They're fickle customers who don't ultimately care about Nintendo like we do. That's the problem. And the Wii is incredible proof of that. It's just absolutely mind-boggling that it is the number one selling console, but yet has the crappiest third-party support of the three systems.

That needs to change. And fast.
Kinda what I was hoping to say, but you said it in a better-worded way.

I'm just saying, Nintendo could create a casual-system. It would sell like hotcakes and only feature "Wii X" type games and the casual crowd would eat it up. But so far, Nintendo hasn't really done much to satiate even its core base of fans- they seem to want to attract other console gamers with their choice of third party support, but where's the first-party support? NSMBU is safe, and they know it, and will probably get good reviews just because it will be a well-designed game, but it's safe. VERY safe. Pikmin is nice to see, but as a launch title? It feels like the game was made launch because they never got around to releasing it on the Wii. Where's that real killer app?

Some would say Nintendoland, and I'd have to agree, sadly. Nintendoland is a nice attempt at bringing the casual and the core together, and that's exactly what it's supposed to do. Minigames based off of the beloved franchises. But it is still very casual based, with a lot of motion control and shallow gameplay mechanics. The Nintendo titles that innovate and challenge the already-established concepts are few and far between... and the ones that attempt to reinvent the franchise in a different light have been missing, too. Metroid: Other M was no Metroid Prime. Opinions vary on Donkey Kong. But also, where are these franchises that we absolutely loved even on the cube? Even the third-party offerings that found their home on Nintendo consoles haven't been around, and I think it's because they alienated so many developers with their casual approach (I don't think, I KNOW.). It's upsetting.

Another thing I'd like to add is that, if Nintendo wants to rely on third parties to bring westernized-type gameplay to their console, that's FINE with me. Because the westernization of Japanese franchises has been killing me softly and I don't want to see that with Nintendo... but they are kind of getting a "softcore western" feel to them with the Wii minigames and safe, casual titles. It's worrisome. Is it wrong to worry?

3215
While it doesn't surprise me that you made this topic, I agree in some aspects. There's definitely some weird stuff going on. However, I don't think there's as great a decline as you mentioned- but I do think that Japanese developers have had a big struggle with the leap to HD graphics. I think that's kind of because Sony and Microsoft pushed the HD era a little early on them. I mean, with games like Xenoblade and the Last Story, there are japanese developers who are still able to take dated hardware and do great things with it, while most RPGs from the HD era have seemed like small corridors and limited environs- pretty, but still. I think if another company attempts a big graphical leap or something to that effect, a lot of these struggling developers are going to have to fall back on Nintendo so that they can utilize tech that is familiar to them.

I don't know, though. That's one facet of it. There's really been a dip in the quality of recent games, and I think it's because there's been such a focus on westernizing these franchises and taking away what kind of made them stand out in the first place...

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Is Nintendo Becoming Lazy?

I don't understand much of the reasoning behind some posts. In the N64 and GCN days all we ever did was complain how badly Nintendo marketed it's self, for many of us that was the sole reason it lost out to Psxbox a generation ago. Nintendo stumbles upon the whole self improvement craze the world has been on about and their new systems sell an unprecedented number because the marketing was so great. Some outlets and groups might be a bit confused now, but going from one gen to the next has always had those people, blue ocean or not.

Now complaints about Reggie hyping and trying to get major IPs from 3rd parties? What the F man? Isn't that all anyone wants along with their Nintendo games?

I just don't see how Nintendo is lazy, what is it that some of you feel entitled too? I get it when people get upset about certain motion controlls, but we've gotten all our major IPs this gen and the only true rehash was Animal Crossing and to a much much lesser extent punch out.

They have showcased so much 3rd party while keeping the lid on their own projects that won't be released for a long time anyway, I don't see the issue. We know nintendos games are being worked on but many people act like they don't exist and use that as excuse to be mad at everything.

But then again maybe I am in the true minority. Things I seem to love many on these boards hate, I guess I am just different and easily content with things.
Hey man, I love Nintendo IPs too. And from this past E3, the third party support and interest on Nintendo's behlaf has been a much-welcomed thing. But is Reggie up there, playing Zombi U like he did with Wii Sports? No, he's putting his face in a camera.

See, Nintendo may have stumbled upon this casual gold-mine, but they're a gaming company, too. They make nice hardware that allows them to cater to that casual audience. And from a business standpoint, it's a nice groove they've got themselves in. But those who grew up playing their video games because of their innovation, challenge, and core experience have a right to feel betrayed, because they don't deliver in a number of ways. And the GAMERS, the ones who supported them throughout their lifetime up until the Wii (and still do- you see a number of fans defending the Wii U fervently)- and there's been a lack of localized games that make the Wii's library a joke. It's not entitlement, it's expecting the same type of quality across the board, because if we don't get that, why should we support the company? Because we want the IPs, right? Then give us more of what we want, Nintendo, and you'll undoubtedly get more support.

Nintendo is a BUSINESS. It's about supply and demand. If we don't demand, they won't supply. If they don't supply and look down on us because we're "insatiable", what does that say about them respecting us as customers? If Nintendo wanted to sell an all-casual system, they could.

These are not really my personal opinions, but they have reason to them. I understand being laid back and taking what you get, and I take advantage of the opportunities and games that my Wii provides. But it IS slim pickings sometimes, and you have to wonder why.

Yeah, I dunno... Reggie just doesn't have his heart in the right place. It seems all he's ever excited about are first and third party titles that are really recognizable, and shoving those down people's throats. The end of the Wii was a sad, sad thing, and it could have been the opportunity to bless the console with some games that we never had the chance to see.

Smartglass is a "smarter" way of implementing the idea, but again- the Wii U is a whole bundle. It's the whole shebang. You don't need to buy a tablet or a smartphone to hook this system up- it's all there for you. And it's probably going to be way cheaper of an investment, when you factor in that casual gamers have all their wii remotes, balance boards, and whatnot, now all they need is this bundle that will undoubtedly be cheap (cheaper than a Kinect/360 bundle, most likely), and more accessible.

The Kinect may be a cool piece of tech, but I just don't see it having "hardcore" basis- and Nintendo has at least established that motion controls can go hand-in-hand with core gaming experiences (the FPS was really the first of these to succeed, Zelda was another proving ground) while pretty much all of the Kinect "core" games have been wonky as hell.

...IMO.

But for the most part all of what you have said with the expection of the tablet (one could argue) the xbox does all of that already and.

And there is the possability of gettting a skype app for wii u (though if microsoft was smart they would keep it xbox only)

But having the wii u tablet does bring in new possabilites to the table. Depending on how well the wii u can multitask say I'm playing mario and people come in to use netflix. I switch to netflix and let it play on the tv while I finish mario on the tablet.
I know this, but again, I think it's about multitasking, as you said. And it's also about the Wii name being one that a lot of casual gamers respond to. They may not take advantage of all the possibilities that the xBox or PS3 has to offer, but the friendly OS and image of Nintendo may convince them to do otherwise.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)

I really do see the Wii U as a "coffee-table device" because it can do so much to interact with the TV and turn it from being a cable receiver into... well, a media center. That Nintendo would kind of take the idea of the television being the central place a family gathers and try to integrate all these functions into their console to emulate that idea... it's a very ingenious concept.

Iwata's Pre-E3 Nintendo Direct really nailed it- with tablets, smartphones, and laptops, you have a lot of portability, but not a lot of connection. But the TV can really be a gateway to connectivity, and Nintendo intends to nail that down. All of their media features- Netflix, Hulu, Internet... it's all an attempt to make the TV into a communication device. Hell, video-chatting with people on the TV screen is probably one of the smartest ideas they came up with- Skype and whatnot may be nice, but being able to have someone up on the TV screen must be very connecting. And you can stream that video to your tablet and pick it up to go.

Nintendo seems to be taking all the elements of a PC and merging them with a game console to truly create a home entertainment system. It could be just as uniting as a family console as it could for individual gamers. Its an attempt to bring something very "high tech" in nature, and interconnectedness of all your house features, to a single device.

I feel that, although Nintendoland won't be a killer-app, it will definitely show off the possibilities of the gamepad very well.

The thing with the Wii U is that it has so many different factors going into it, it seems that Nintendo is having a difficult time really covering them all- and they say they still have MORE to reveal. It's kind of difficult, because they've jammed so much into this system- online, tablet streaming, integrated gaming, asymmetrical gaming, NFC, etc and they probably don't have a lot of games that feature uses for this stuff, themselves.

I see the launch utilizing a lot of its streaming/motion tech, but probably by next year Nintendo will be churning out more unique ideas for the gamepad.

They've had some questionable marketing choices, but they really do seem to be trying. I mean, the business aspect may be a little lazy- especially on Nintendo of America's behalf- but the quality of their software and hardware has been fantastic.

So no, I wouldn't say that.

I wonder how many people on ebay are going to take advantage of consumer ignorance by selling old Wii systems and lying and saying they are actually Wii U's.
You view the world quite negatively.
