Was the title change just a subtle way to make me torture myself by reading through the entirety of my 2014 posts?

I talked a lot of **** about Renegade Kid that year.

EDIT: ah crap, I just realized that’s a Smash Bros. Joke.

What games are you hoping get announced, Evan?

That’s a serious question. I’m in no position to judge. I’m just preordering things I have no time for but like to pretend I do.
What games am I hoping to get announced? Golly. To be honest, a lot of the things I would like to be announced have already been seen in some shape or form- Shin Megami Tensei V, Travis Strikes Again, Metroid Prime 4, Shining Resonance, Pillars of Eternity 2, Ys, Pokemon, Smash Bros. Whether or not these games are coming soon, the console is primed to be one that I sink a lot of hours into. That being said, I see a lot of games that are popular elsewhere coming to Switch, but a lack of content that really engages me, personally. I'm a fan of the weird and of immersive sims, so that Travis Strikes Again and Mario and Rabbids are currently the weirdest games on the console leaves me wanting more.

I'm a huge Pikmin fan, especially after Pikmin 3, so sign me the hell up for Pikmin even if it's not a huge title. I'd honestly prefer it to a somewhat lackluster-looking Kirby or Yoshi game in the Switch's second year, but that's just me.

Likewise, while Sakurai has stated he left Nintendo to move away from constant sequels, another installment in the Kid Icarus franchise with a similar style to Uprising (and a control scheme that doesn't make people's wrists explode) would be welcome. The series has taken an over-the-top and spectacular turn, so I'd hope that it gets another chance on Switch.

Ports I'd personally like to see are things that might not run smoothly on Switch- things like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, or Dishonored. These are the games that take a long time to make because they are focused on quality content, and seeing that on a system made by a company with similarly high quality would be nice. I don't really care for South Park, or Assassin's Creed, or Sports Games. I want things that are wacky and different. Vanillaware titles, Atlus stuff, Sin and Punishment, weird Nintendo collaborations that give us gems like The Last Story and Pandora's Tower. Capcom titles, like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. While some of these are better saved for later in the console's life, and it is important that Nintendo get the heavy hitters out sooner so that the install base is high for later, a mixture of new and weird, old yet high in quality, and heavy-hitter recognizable IP is what I'm looking for. It's great to see all these titles vying for attention on Switch, but none save for a few have scratched the itch I have.

In a blue sky world, I'm thinking it would be better to seriously rejigger how the game plays and pare it down to a 30-character base roster. This would require some tough choices about cuts that would inevitably piss people off. But here's a few easy ones to start: Dark Pit, Lucina, Ike or Roy, Palutena (no one likes her), Pac Man (fine for one game, otherwise a good cut target), Lucas (even though I like him better than Ness, but probably only need one Mother character), Rosalina (Mario needs some cuts), Dr. Mario (same), Lucario or Mewtwo (don't care what anyone says, these characters are quite similar and Pokemon needs cuts), Zero Suit Samus (nest her back into Samus), Mii Fighters (**** em'), Robin or Corrin (pick one recent FE avatar). Also, lose Cloud, Ryu, and Bayonetta (don't need to be in more than one game, don't really jibe well)
All of this talk sounds like someone who has no concept of the Smash competitive scene. Some highlights:
-Ike and Roy are extremely different characters, as one is all about massive knockback while the other is about optimal close-range damage with a long-range option.
-Rosalina's play style is known within the FGC as a puppet master, and arguably makes her the most unique character in the Mario roster of fighters.
-Mewtwo's appearance in Smash 4 only highlights how different he and Lucario actually are, as they possess vastly different play styles.
-Zero Suit Samus is superior to Samus in every way and the two characters play nothing alike.
-The DLC characters have some of the most unique play styles for a competitive player to utilize, and 2/3rds of those mentioned were fan picks.

Now, as for your personal preferences, such as calling out a certain goddess of light... Well, I like ARMS, so who am I to say you have no taste? But in all honesty, she's one of my favorites, so I don't get the hate.

Smash isn't like any other competitive fighter and there's nothing wrong with that. It defines its genre (platform fighter) by offering an immense amount of variety in play style and function. The argument regarding clones is legitimate, especially since some of the clones in Smash 4 are unlike Falco in the sense that they have relatively few differences from the character they are based upon on a fundamental level. Lucina's reach, run, jump, and float speeds are exactly the same as Marth's, the only difference being that one character can deal tipper knockback and damage while the other can't. Dark Pit is a bit slower and heavier than Pit, but not by much- the main difference comes from their special moves. The same can be found in Doctor Mario's slightly reduced reach. However, the better thing to do with these characters in a future entry is to make them more unique. Say what you will about the fall of Falco since Melee, changing his basic attacks and down-B have only made him more distinguishable from Fox. Roy's updated look and moveset are now much different from Marth's, and that's a good thing.

Smash 4 wasn't perfect, but it possessed enough positive changes from Brawl and a competitive metagame that was different enough from Melee that it stood on its own two feet, even if the DLC characters pushed the meta in a direction that I personally feel did not benefit the scene. I think the thing that mostly everyone can agree on is that Smash 4 introduced a lot of characters that had very unique play styles: Rosalina and Luma, Little Mac, Shulk, Duck Hunt, Pac Man, Bowser Jr., etc. If those characters were to be cut, I would be pretty disappointed, especially since the recognition for those franchises and characters has only grown since their inclusion. Please understand that this is also a party game, at least, in Sakurai's head, so having as many Nintendo franchises represented is important for people who just want to play as their favorite character and throw a Bob-Omb at their friend's head.

All Smash Bros games (except this one, of course) are built from the ground up.

Again, I’m glad that there’s games coming to Switch. After an incredibly stellar year one, it’s nice to have a break to catch up on indies and some older stuff that I missed out on. I just don’t find a majority of what has been announced to be all that appealing and that’s a-okay. I’m a man of specific tastes.

Shhh.

It’s okay to be wrong, Caterkiller. :)

Especially about playable characters. :D

Shhh.

It's okay to be wrong, Luigi Dude. :)

I actually just realized that Dead-Heat Breakers is a full-retail game. I never got my hands on the previous entries, but I might give them a shot in order to see if this would be worth a look.

Makes sense to get the series out to as many people as possible on 3DS for an eventual Luigi's Mansion 3 on Switch.

I hope it would feature the open-ended exploration of the original and not the mission-based structure of the sequel.

285
I said if, Soren. Should they price it at 40, I wouldn't cause such a big stink. It's a full-featured title, but even if they're going for a new audience who missed out on the Wii U purchase, that's a bit of a slap in the face for the original owners.

Deluxe is a title granted to Mario Kart 8 likely because it possessed all of the pre-existing DLC from the original release in addition to new content. Note Tropical Freeze has similar marketing to Captain Toad- an on-the-box graphic noting that the game features new content.

Glad to see they're letting this series die with the decrepit 3DS.

287
Seriously, though, the previous statement about Smash 4's community puts me into a logical conundrum. On one hand, I could see this Smash being an enhanced port if only because Smash 4's competitive scene is still evolving and needs certain characters to be addressed if it intends to survive. On the other, wiping the slate clean with a new game would allow them to do a pretty extreme balance check and add some new mechanics atop that. But creating a new game means new art assets for a roster of 58 damn characters, as well as whatever new characters are added atop that. Seeing as Smash 4 added an absolutely monstrous amount of characters, I feel it would be much more reasonable for people to reel in their expectations regarding the roster for this game- it will likely have some much-needed fine-tuning of older characters and only a handful of new additions.

288
So glad they've decided to let the Mario and Luigi series die with the decrepit 3DS.

289
Yeah Nintendo can go screw themselves if they think this game is worth 60 bucks on Switch, even with additional levels.

The original was 40 and I can't imagine they'll add all that much.

290
Don't let forum members try to sway you, kids! This is going to be an updated version of Smash 4, because that game's competitive community is a hot mess and needs a good re-balancing!

Today's Nintendo Direct had a lot of content that personally doesn't appeal to me, but I think is a pretty nice sign for those who are looking for a varied console library.

It’s an enhanced port.

Deal with it.

That's Tony in the suit...I think it's just an extension (his hand is still in it). However, there is a scene with a certain someone who may or may not be Tony inside one of his suits...and a toy has spoiled who it is and what will happen there. I already saw it, but I'm super looking forward to that actual scene...Bruce Banner is in the Hulkbuster armor...and he turns into Hulk and busts out of it - if you want to see it, check the link - http://cdn.wegotthiscovered.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Hulkbuster-in-Avengers-Infinity-War.jpg.
The sad thing about this, is that it was rumored to happen all the way back in Age of Ultron and would have been a great moment there, but now that everyone has been expecting it for several movies, it will lose a lot of its impact.

294
Fortnite is basically confirmed too. Armature Studios is working on a port for an unspecified system...and Epic Games CEO said he'd love to have it on Switch.
That would be a much faster turnaround for a popular game than Nintendo had for Minecraft. Which I guess could be a good or bad thing.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct To Air March 8

There are some curious rumors floating around about the content of the Direct, ranging from Luigi's Mansion DLC for Odyssey, to an Unreal Engine 4 remake of Ever Oasis.

Oh, and some crappy series called Fire Emblem coming to Switch.

There’s only one Nostradamus around here.

If you want to maximize your enjoyment of the game, I’d strongly recommend the DLC. The cave of trials is one of the best aspects of the title as a whole, and the Champion’s Ballad is pretty much a highlight reel of all the best moments in the game.

TalkBack / Re: Recent History of Kirby: Kirby's Epic Yarn
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:18:29 PM »
Epic Yarn is a delightful game that shouldn't have starred Kirby but whatever. As stated previously, the aesthetics are so on-point it overwhelms at times. Such a beautiful freaking game.

I have some hot opinions on the Kirby games but I will say this- its a series that is so inoffensive that I have never been disappointed by a single release. Star Allies may change that with its broken ally AI though.
