TalkBack / Re: Report: Nintendo of America Passing On Devil's Third
« on: July 09, 2015, 10:10:59 PM »
Yeah, this aggravates me on so many levels, especially since I was actually interested in this game because I'm not at shooter guy but I do love online modes.

Obviously NCL doesn't have much faith in violent shooters- I mean, the whole point of Splatoon was to market to an audience that never really got into shooters in a big way. Likewise, at least NoE is releasing this game in some form. If NoA thinks they don't need to pad out the Wii U's release schedule, they're fucking stupid, pardon my French. I would rather have a game of questionable quality that I enjoy rather than a gaping hole in the release schedule. Plus, it's exactly the kind of game Nintendo needs for their catalogue.

Of course, the reviews aren't out yet, and it's up in the air if it is REALLY bad, but I'm a bit surprised to see all these people ragging on it. Apparently Nintendo did some close work with Valhalla on it, so I can't imagine quality concerns snuck up on them...

Cthulhu Saves the World:
This is a Steam RPG from the guys who made Breath of Death (3?), and it's delightfully bizarre. The story is mostly there for laughs, but good dialogue and wacky situations and characters sell the very DQ-ish mechanics. Also, it has a great and insightful director's commentary that is accessible in-game! It also has a few neat battle mechanics and decent depth.

Crimson Shroud:
If you own a 3DS and don't have Crimson Shroud... Well, that's okay. It's a very like-it-or-hate-it experience. If you have any sort of love for dice-based tabletop games, though, you should really check this game out. It features a number of clever and forward-thinking mechanics, a solid plot, fantastic music, and has a new game+ that opens new areas, raises the difficulty, and an alternate ending! There's a definite difficulty curve, and the only flaw I can really give the game is an ambiguous localization that forces the player to grind for a certain drop halfway through the game. Even though you'll have to consult a guide just once, that doesn't stop Crimson Shroud from being one of my favorite RPGs in recent memory.

Nox:
Ah, Nox. A strangely comedic RPG that plays on it's strengths. Choose one of three paths- the warrior, wizard, or conjurer, and play through three very unique storylines that have intertwining characters and themes. Nox may feel standard, but once you sink your teeth into each class' unique combat mechanics and weirdly charming stories (there's a guy named Horrendous), you'll enjoy Nox very much. It's also hard as nails, so get ready to abuse that quick save!

Blah blah blah Wii U owners hate the Wii U.

Best case scenario: the Wii U is seen as an anomaly and not a typical Nintendo product.  Why do you think they killed off the Virtual Boy so quick?  They didn't want the Nintendo brand to be associated with subpar products.  The longer the Wii U is on the market the more Nintendo will be associated with that kind of unsuccessful product.
Nintendo is going to try to make a bid for the worldwide market with their next console, and the market that is most likely going to buy is the handheld market. I the Wii U is such a **** show like you say, why would they attempt an other console so soon, with so little time to dwell on what a console actually needs?

Then again, you're commenting on modern day Nintendo, which makes no fucking sense anyway, but despite that, you're presenting a wildly ignorant mindset, even for Nintendo.

I've been contemplating redoing my blog to pretty much exclusively cover RPGs lately, but I play too many other genres for that to be my sole focus. So I figured, why not share some of the fun with you guys? I'd like to talk about some of my favorite RPGs in recent memory so I don't clog the reviews section with this stuff.

As you may know, I play a lot of 3DS/Wii U, but since one of those things doesn't have jack **** in terms of RPGs I'll also draw upon my PS Classics, VC, and PC stuff. Let's talk about great, underrated, or unknown RPGs!

Recent Favorites:

The Keep:
I gave this title a whole lot of love on my podcast, and I am a huge sucker for First-Person-Western RPGs. Despite it's higher-end price point, the Keep has great presentation values and a surprisingly good combat system for a 3DS real time RPG. Add in multiple difficulty levels, decent puzzling, and growth based- equipment rewarding dedicated player choice, and you have a 3DS eShop title that is well-worth the price.

Phantasy Star:
Yeah, I have been pining for a retro feel after the bitter taste Bravely Default left in my mouth so I started playing Phantasy Star again on VC. It's crazy to think that this game came out before Final Fantasy and features a female protagonist, but it's a pretty traditional dungeon-crawling sci-fi JRPG. However, the music is great and the character builds are interesting and satisfying. Excited to play the rest of the series.

Solatorobo: Red the Hunter:
Proof that JRPGs don't need to beat your head against the wall with difficulty spikes or even really in-depth combat systems, Solatorobo is a totally underrated action RPG with cool customization, repetitive combat, but stellar presentation values and a very engaging and lovable story. I'd be lying if I said I didn't roll my eyes pretty hard when I first started playing but gradually became very immersed in the world and characters of the story. There's also plenty to do and collect in the game so it feels especially full.

Will post more soon!

The Last Story was a 25-30 hour RPG and one of my favorite RPGs last gen. I like titles that don't drag themselves out too much.

I Nintendo is unwise, which I fully believe, they will show the NX for two years at E3. Their current plan of "satisfying Wii U owners" makes me think they aren't dropping it before the end of 2016. I also find it strange that people are still convinced this is gong to be a home console and not a handheld- the 3DS has pretty much maxed out its longevity and the amount of "game" people can put on it. It's time to lay that to rest. Nintendo can have a mediocre home console like Wii U continue to make money (the fact that they haven't price dropped it yet shows that they don't feel too desperate for sales) while they release a new, big handheld. Maybe it's a handheld with Wii U architecture. But I am not certain the NX is a home console.

I second that, having watched a lot of anime myself. I'm speaking from personal experience in terms of more popular and contemporary shows.

2258
I wasn't considering the hardware architecture, but yeah, I can see the NX having some semblance of the Wii U's hardware in it.

All the more exciting, since it's going to be one of those "third pillar" handhelds they claim won't interfere with the sales of their first two pillars, but will sell pretty well so they'll drop it entirely. Making a doom prediction here.

2259
There is no way in hell the NX is an upgraded Wii U.

That would be the worst possible choice for Nintendo moving forward... Ever.

Going back to casual Turfwars during Splatfest is quite a shock -- in Ranked i was at least somewhat protected against terrible teammates. Now i am at full mercy of matchmaking which might as well make me the only 20 level in a team.

At least winning or losing doesn't really matter -- you get points either way.
I see. Too unskilled to be a team leader, yet skilled enough to proclaim yourself not a "casual".

Hm. Maybe I should save my smack talk for August.

I had no idea about the T-shirt being available in the week before, but Nintendo didn't put out any information about it. Also, a piece of gear that is returned after use is a waste of my time.

Yeah, so I played a bit of Splafest last night and I'm only sorta keen on it. The fact that the rank up system takes literal hours that some people may not have for a day like July 4th, combined with the immediate handicap of the stupid Splatfest Tee idea made starting out slow and made the extended rank up mechanics even more tedious. Nj
The three stage rotation was nice, but the stages themselves weren't my favorites.

I also found my normal strategy of .59 Gal Sprinkler completely useless against the onslaught of Blasters and Aerosprays. Anything with an Inkstrike seemed to be on display. So I promptly switched to an Aerospray myself and schooled some pretty annoying players.

Better stages, more considerate timing or leveling, and maybe tees with special traits would be nice but are likely not going to happen. So I'll probably skip out on Splatfests in the future. Also, I'm in the boat that thinks tower control being a ranked variation is fucking stupid añd possibly the worst decision Nintendo made with this game so far. I'm okay with the holding back content to increase the longevity of a community but roping off an entire mode for the slightly absurd rotation periods is not wise and it doesn't make me want to play ranked at obtuse times at all.

Square treating western DQ fans well?

Not a chance. Sorry, false alarm.

The overt-anime stylings started with Awakening, true, and I found them annoying and unbearable there too. A series that used to have somewhat decent characters that felt a little bit less centered around one character trait was a nice thing for a strategy game.

This goes to ridiculous lengths, however, as the characters are even separated into more stereotypical archetypes.

I'd like Fire Emblem to bomb because the series has taken steps towards being something that isn't fun.

If I really wanted it to bomb, though, I'd just push for a Wii U release. HA!

The thing is, people hold third party titles on Nintendo platforms to the same standard that they hold first party games, and I think that developers fear that for sales reasons and critical reception. Obviously, they're performing against a so tired company that has made many great titles, and I think that people frown on games that don't offer the same level of polish. It's why Wayforward games sell well on Nintendo devices- despite the overall quality, they out out material that's polished from many aspects and have been accepted by fans in that sense.

I know the games I wanted to play the most on Nintendo consoles were titles that seemed comparable to Nintendo titles- Bayonetta, No More Heroes, Sonic Colors, Fluidity- things that you didn't feel like you could get on other consoles. Of course, some of those games are found elsewhere an garner cult followings, but I see Nintendo platforms as "cult" platforms more than any other. Especially considering their core fanbase is pretty much a cult itself. If you're like me, you look for what is different and appealing in a console rather than what's the same. Unfortunately, that mindset isn't profitable and it's clearly not what people what judging by the opinions I've seen here and elsewhere.

So Moray Towers. That map looks pretty sweet, and very different from others. That was kind of what I was hoping for with the multiplayer maps. The verticality has been present in a number of stages but never to this extent. It's pretty exciting.

Tower control looks like it's going to require some definite strategy.

Oh, I agree that Nintendo failed to show off a strong lineup for 2015/2016. And I wasn't saying that a small amount of people watch E3. I was saying that gaming has a niche audience, and the media related to that medium is even smaller.

I also see that, when you look past the presentations, you an clearly see what is smoke and mirrors and what is actual content, and people already understand that. It's been a week since E3 and reality is starting to set in.

2271
I would say that Sticker Star was different, but not necessarily better. Ambitious isn't the right word for it.

It's just me that hates Star Fox, really. But I think there's an abundance of evidence that already points towards it being another mediocre game in a mediocre franchise.

Is that really what E3 is about, though? The people there playing games? There's an unending cycle of the same tripe being posted from the same websites about games that they think we should care about like Titanfall and Assassin's Creed, which mean something to the majority of the populous but do nothing unique or interesting. Nintendo's initiative has been to prove themselves different from their competitors, and in many ways, that has failed to appeal to consumers. But to hate on the presentation they gave to an even more select group of their consumers on aspects like their indie representation which I think was clearly displayed quite well for Wii U owners with the Nindies@Home deal is a bit ridiculous, and to decry them for not showing off more to a small group of people feels like more fodder for this whole "the press hates Nintendo" myth that is becoming more and more aggravating as time goes on.

2273
I agree. Instead, it was half-baked idea that amounted to "dodge big stuff or go around tall stuff"

To whomever it may concern...

I have just recently received my very first NWR forum title thanks to the powers that be. As a member of this site for about three-ish years (nearing on four), I am very pleased to finally join the ranks of those that are deemed worthy. Even if my title doesn't necessarily make sense to me. Whatever!

I've come to realize, after browsing the cesspool that is 4chan's /v/, that it's not the discussion of video games that I enjoy (although, I do like talking about video games, specifically certain genres, very, very, very, VERY much), it's the community that forms around them, and not being able to identify those specific personalities, whether they are positive or negative. I've kicked the /v/ habit, I don't go there anymore, mostly because I found it was a pit of despair and ultimately very transient, and it led me to take refuge here. I have grown as a person at NWR, realized my own style of writing (which is pretty damn important, since that's what I'd like to do in the future), and tackled my personal demons as well as those I consider important within the realm of video games. To be bestowed with a title, no matter what it may be, is an accomplishment in my eyes. It means, I am here. I belong to this community. And I'm happy to say that.

Thanks, NWR!
