Is a mockup based on what other people have said really a prediction?

I've tried, once again, to get into the Mega Man franchise with Mega Man Battle Network 2. I was recommended this title over the first in the series because, like most Mega Man series, the second entry is where the gameplay supposedly gets much tighter and comes into its own.

That being said, this title seems to take the typical bullshit staples of the series- time-based rankings, weakness oriented boss and enemy encounters that are extremely strict, and the constant nagging reminder that you could do way better if you adhered to its mechanics, but with the additional tedium of grinding atop that! The dialogue and plot are atrocious, but the actual combat is quite nice- if only there wasn't an absurd amount of grinding necessary to get passable rankings for it. While I'm enjoying the twists on the RPG formula, too many are merely substitutions for long-standing concepts from the genre and aren't necessarily better. Battle ranking, for example, should push players to get better but not necessarily lock out enemy drops behind high ranks.

In other words, this is a game that, in my youth, I likely would have accepted and adapted towards because of how much I like the actual combat- but being older, sort of wiser, and more aware of when this franchise goes out of its way to waste my time, I likely won't be getting much deeper into the series after beating the final boss, unless it shakes up the formula in a very interesting way.

Also, I hate Mega Man.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: DSarchive.com - A Nintendo DS Resource

I'm considering doing something similar for the 3DS. However, the DS is a great subject for a project like this despite its over-emphasis on touch control and SNES-ish ports.

Best of luck.

Yeah, not being able to purchase upgrades with your coins would certainly be a bummer.

You did say that Nintendo's half-assed treatment of GC caused it to fail. That is, in my opinion, saying the GameCube wasn't great. Now, your later discussion of its greatest titles goes against that, but those are just opinions. The fact is, the GameCube sold like ****. Maybe my whimsical summary was a bit too shallow.

But joining the forums to defend Ian Sane was your first mistake, dude.

I don't think people hate you, but there's a difference between your persona and say, Khush's Lucario persona, in which Lucario is just a guy that says really stupid stuff a lot but doesn't get all riled up about people calling him out on his absurdity. He also rarely talks about video games, which might help his case. Also I know that Lucario isn't a Khush's dupe but if this gets quoted with that reference taken seriously I'm done.

We all have moments of immaturity- I used to get real riled up on these forums myself, and had several unhinged moments even in the past two years, but it's important to not let arguments on the magic TV box get to you. There's a difference of perspective here, where victimization leads to paranoia, that is going to become an endless cycle. Don't let it happen.

I won the E3 predictions contest.

But I would be interested to hear what others have done.

1258
It was just a summary, not a opinion piece.

So the Ten just recently passed through 50 pages, if you care (or not). If the rest of the series goes as planned, I foresee the final product rounding out at around 260-75 pages. So there's lots more work to be done!

I have a few archives, a tumblr and RSS feed, and the works... but I don't really get a lot of feedback. Anyone have any comments/critique they'd like to offer? That's all I'm looking for, moving forward from here.

Working on getting the PDF compilation started, as well!

The Rat proclaims his name for the world to see, says he hates Paper Mario, talks about the Game Cube being trash, and everyone hates him.

1261
There are obviously people who do give a **** about Nintendo, Ian. That includes yourself, despite your hate-hate relationship persona.

1262
No, I don't believe that was Black Widow.

If you like PS3 games more than Nintendo games, you should probably stop buying Nintendo consoles.

See, with how bad the Wii U sold, I now see this is the breaking point- this is going to be where Nintendo either proves that they can continue to be relevant for all those people that have grown tired with their practices. I mean, with how the Wii U performed, they could have bowed out and ceased making consoles- but they are still trying, and I thin this one has to be THE ONE. I can see the NX, ideally, reaching PS4 level sales, maybe... but I can't see it doing any better. Of course, this is assuming it is simply a home console. If it is a hybrid, like it should be, it might reach a middle ground between 3DS and PS4, but that's really stretching it.

Oh, and this "power" argument is bullshit considering consoles become obsolete within like, a year of their release. Not being HD was the Wii's fatal flaw, it was still able to run good games that were fun and pushed the limits of game design. All you can ask for in the hardware of a console is to perform well and do what it needs to do. Name calling and ****-flinging about the limitations of a console is fruitless and petty.

Relax. These are video games we're talking about, and while we all have our moments of entitlement and heated emotions, there's no use talking about how disappointed we were in the past- I'm including myself in this group. The past ain't changing, and the more you argue about it, the more you sound like Ian Sane.

I can see all three of them having cool evolutions. I wasn't a fan of Oshawott either (who had a similar circus/aquarium theme to Popplio) and couldn't see how its design could go in a good direction, but Dewott is friggin' amazing and one of my favourite Pokemon designs. They fudged it up a bit with the final evolution, but the point is all three of them can go in any number of good direction from here. I can see myself choosing either of the three after seeing how things shake out.
Oshawott was based on the fisherman/merchant/samurai clothing and armor stylings.

Poplio, on the other hand, is just a big, dumb clown seal.

My general assumption is that Nintendo will cheap out on the specs because that's what they done for a while now.  And they will prioritize architecture that favours their own development and not put any real effort into addressing what third parties want.  Then they will get dick support and only diehard Nintendo nuts will give a ****.

There is a certain level of effort that is required to compete and Nintendo just doesn't like doing that.  Mix that with their notorious stubbornness and penny-pinching attitude and odds are we'll get the Wii U 2.  We don't know for sure and I'm still very interested in finding out the exact details of the NX but I'm not optimistic because Nintendo has given me no reason to be.  Hell, they seem no different today then they did when the Wii U launched.  If they were getting their act together we would already see the difference.
I'm saving this for future reference.

Mmm. Well, it seems like you're not really the target audience for this sort of thing. This game has FF-like turn-based combat if you like the first three entries, but it's vastly different from that franchise IV and onwards. If you like Sin Megami Tensei, this is more up your alley.
Well, how about Dragon Quest? It's more similar to that, in some ways, than Final Fantasy. As long as you're excited about something totally strange (and craving Wii U RPGs, I know, I'm in the same boat), then I look forward to seeing what you think!

Never played any Persona or SMT, or any Atlus games for that matter haha. It's been a while since I gamed at all, but did play some Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem and a few of the GameCube RPGs. We'll see I guess, it'll probably be fine. Can definitely learn to overlook designs I don't care much for, especially since the rest of Tokyo Mirage looks really stylish. Knowing absolutely nothing about the whole J-pop stuff probably means it'll be extra bizarre to me, but frankly I'm excited for something kinda 'out-there'.
The ****? I thought I wrote out a whole response to this...

Have you ever played Dragon Quest? I think those games remind me of the "pacing" of SMT-style game most closely, in contrast to Final Fantasy. Whatever RPGs you have played, I'm very interested to hear what you think of this game when it finally comes out! Like you, I'm eagerly looking forward to it because of the art direction, and also my console RPG lust (especially on Wii U). As a fan of Japanese culture (though not necessarily the J-Pop facet), and having lived and visited Japan in the past, that's a big reason for my personal appeal, but I hope to hear what aspects you end up enjoying, as well!

1268
Personally I'm interested because I like turn-based Final Fantasy combat, which is hard to find on Wii U, and this game looks gorgeous. But man do some of the outfits look dumb haha! Oh well, not trying to hate on anyone here so I hope whether you get the version with swimsuits or without them, it'll be a cool game for everyone.

I'd say most JRPGs in general have skimpy and "dumb" outfits, though that's in the eye of the beholder. I personally think the outfits are quite nice. However, as I've stated before, it's not that I'll miss the swimsuits in particular, its that it's a pretty standard for the genre, publisher, and culture. They're kind of missing the mark with an unnecessary localization choice that isn't too far off- I mean, we do have swimsuits in the west, too.

1269
Let's not get all worked up, people.

1270
You just said you don't care, which is perfectly understandable. I'm not getting too worked up about it myself, but in terms of faithfulness to original game, it is a bit disappointing.

1271
A game like this would have never come out back then because the SNES actually had a game library.

1272
There are forty-something-million 3DS' out there.

I think this game will hit at least twenty percent of that number, which is a nice number to have.

The whole thumb? Story time!

1275
If it's literally just swimsuits and talking, I guess I could watch a vid of it online and lose nothing. So yeah, no problem there. If it were a boss fight or dungeon though, then I might be a bit miffed.

I honestly am so over this aspect of the game I almost didn't want to comment on it. I have just watched brief snippets and heard impressions, and what does remain still interests me- it looks gorgeous, has lots of style, and the battle system is crazy.
