TalkBack / The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Not Coming to Australia
« on: February 11, 2013, 03:52:36 PM »

Unfortunately, the survival instinct of Activision is too strong to take a risk.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33258

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will not see a Wii U release in Australia.

While the game is still set for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii U version was canned in Australia "based on customer demand" according to Activision.

"As with every game release, publishers decide which platforms to release based on customer demand. Unfortunately it wasn’t there for the Wii U sku on The Walking Dead," the company's statement reads. This also happened to the release of 007 Legends on Wii U, which is also from Activision.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is being released on March 26 in North America and March 29 in Europe.

This was revealed on the Runner2 Dev Blog, along with the news of its submission to Nintendo. The announcement came from Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games, he stated "We uploaded to Nintendo with confidence and even though we're not always in the same office, I like to think that we all raised our glasses to one another for a job well done."

The Wii U version was submitted last due to a bug being found just before uploading, the fix wasn't an easy one, but three days later the game was uploaded successfully.

Runner2 is releasing on the Wii U eShop along with other non-Nintendo systems.

Megabloks are just not LEGO bricks, and other systems just aren't Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33164

LEGO City Undercover would not be the same on different platforms according to Executive Producer Loz Doyle.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Doyle states that "LEGO City Undercover would definitely lose something on other platforms, Chase is actually given a LEGO version of the GamePad as his Police Communicator, so it's really woven into the story."

Doyle also said that at the beginning of development there were many more ideas for the GamePad, but they decided to focus on making it a "police device"

LEGO City Undercover releases March 18 in North America, and the 28 in Europe.

TalkBack / Kirby's Star Stacker Review Mini
« on: January 29, 2013, 04:34:13 PM »

Stacking has never been this cute.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewmini/33163

Throughout the years, Kirby has appeared in multiple spin-off games that were fun, but maybe not necessarily original (see: Kirby’s Avalanche, a Puyo Puyo clone). Bucking the trend to a degree, Kirby’s Star Stacker is a falling-block puzzle game that is both original and fun. Even with King Dedede’s laughing and taunting, Star Stacker manages to deliver a solid puzzle game.

The goal of the game is to stack star blocks throughout the playfield that enclose Kirby’s friends, Kine, Rick, and Coo from Kirby’s Dream Land 2. The idea of enclosing blocks and not just matching them makes for a unique twist on typical falling-block puzzles. The new gameplay idea can take a little time getting used to but with patience, it all clicks together. Star Stacker can become challenging, especially at higher difficulty levels, with King Dedede slamming his fist on the ground to make new rows of blocks rise with regularity.

With oodles of Kirby all over the game, Kirby’s Star Stacker has a decorous presentation, including pleasant-yet-repetitive music and cute Kirby character animations. While playing King Dedede laughs at you, which is both funny and somewhat maddening. Kirby’s Star Stacker is a charming game with deeper puzzle gameplay then you may have expected. Star Stacker is worth of any player’s time, especially if they have a deep infatuation for Kirby and novel puzzle games.

TalkBack / Nintendo Wishes for the New Year
« on: January 25, 2013, 05:57:35 PM »

When you wish upon a Mario star, makes no difference which Toad you are...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/33142

Has anyone ever told you that anything is possible? I thought that until I realized we still have not gotten a Zelda movie or a Kirby theme park. We can still wish, though. Wishes give us hope for better days, or in my case, better games. In other words, I have been thinking about the things I wish will happen in the world of Nintendo in 2013.

Continued Wii U Third Party Support:

As upset as I am that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not coming to Wii U, I understand that the game has most likely been in development for a while (and that Platinum games is already supporting the Wii U with two other games). That being said, I am wishing for third party support to remain abundant on Wii U. Last year, we were treated to ports of great games like Mass Effect 3, as well as new releases that were awesome like Assassin’s Creed III. Games like Rayman Legends give me hope that this positive trend will only continue.

An Exciting E3:

While some may argue this statement, I found Nintendo’s E3 2012 press conference to be quite disappointing. While I did not hate it, it lacked the surprises or jaw dropping moments we have come to expect. Whether it be Iwata taking a Wii out of his jacket pocket, or holding a 3DS in the air and saying 3DS in somewhat broken English, E3 is always exciting.

A Spotlight on Other Nintendo Franchises:

I love Mario, but I would like to see some other franchises get big releases. There were five Mario games last year, along with two other games with Mario appearances. I would like to see a new Star Fox, or even an Ice Climbers Championship Edition. Or, people who know me in the digital realm know how much I want Steel Diver 2: Still Diving.

All Gamers Give Nintendo a Chance:

While gaining many “casual gamers”  (I hate using these labels), the Wii and DS era lost many “Core gamers” that I would like to see give Nintendo a chance. Nintendo systems are hosting many core-centric games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. As much as I like excluding people from my hobbies, it is much better when more people join in on the fun. I mean, when it comes to people not giving Nintendo a chance, I can only think of the wise words of Reyn from Xenoblade Chronicles: “Whatta bunch of Jokers!”

By the end of 2013 Nintendo will have new challenges to face, but with a little wishing they will be okay. Alright that is the cheesiest thing I have ever wrote. Yuck.

The developer also hopes for an Australia and New Zealand release in late January.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33064

The update to Trine 2: Directors Cut on Wii U is stuck in the submission process.

According to the blog of the Finnish game developer, Frozenbyte, the hope is the update for North America and Europe to see a release by the end of January. Also expected by the end of January is a release of the game in Australia and New Zealand.

When asked about a retail release of the game on YouTube, Frozenbyte responded, "It's a possibility... we'd need a partner for it though, so even if we decide to go for it, it will in any case take a lot of time to arrange, so it's hard to say when it could happen... we'll see!"

Trine 2: Directors Cut is available on the North American and European eShop.

TalkBack / ZombiU as a Franchise, Over 300k Dead Survivors
« on: January 17, 2013, 10:43:02 AM »

Not a franchise...yet.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33010

ZombiU shares the Zombi name with Ubisoft's very first game, but the relationship ends there.

According to Guillaume Brunier, producer of ZombiU, the game was already in development before the team realized the similarities between the two titles. Brunier reaffirms that ZombiU is not a remake of Zombi, but does joke that if this erroneous connection "helps ZombiU being a franchise, we should stop fighting for the truth!"

When asked what else the team might have planned similar to the special zombie they planted in the game a few weeks after launch, Brunier hinted that they have multiple ideas. He specifically mentioned the over 300,000 zombified survivors stored on their servers, adding, "who knows what we could do with them."

Brunier also commented on how impressed he is with Miiverse. He says the team is "on the Miiverse all day long, chatting with players, checking their status, admiring the crazy art they’re creating."

TalkBack / ZombiU Producer on Co-op, Regrettable Gameplay Mechanics
« on: January 17, 2013, 09:58:42 AM »

Even post-apocalyptic London has issues.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33009

A more robust multiplayer mode was envisioned for ZombiU, but was scrapped in order to release on time alongside the Wii U.

Guillaume Brunier, producer of the game, says the team would have liked to have a tension filled co-op mode, but remarked that it was abandoned pretty early in development as the team "could not deliver it on time." Still, he hinted at what that mode might have been like, remarking that "in our most exciting dreams, we would like to create an online experience where players never quite know where they stand between co-op and player vs. player. Doubt is a great nest for tension and fear."

While talking about things that had to be left out, Brunier also shared his thoughts on some elements of the game that should have been left out. He stated, "there are also things that we should have left on the drawing board like the tapping gameplay to nail barricades or open manholes."

TalkBack / The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Coming to Wii U this March
« on: January 10, 2013, 06:52:21 PM »

Not to be confused with Telltale Games' The Walking Dead.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32956

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is set for a release this March on Wii U.

Unlike Telltale's episodic The Walking Dead, Survival Instinct is a first-person action game focused on surviving the Zombie apocalypse. The game takes place in the Television series' timeline before the events of the first episode and not in the world of the comic book series as Telltale's game did. The game follows familiar faces Daryl and Meryl Dixon on their walker-infested journey to Atlanta.

The Wii U version became a reality halfway into the development of the game. Producer Glen Gamble says the Wii U version has a "streamlined" inventory with an always-available backpack.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will releases in Europe on March 29, no date has been announced for North America.

TalkBack / Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade Review
« on: January 05, 2013, 02:29:02 PM »

Just forget this ever happened.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/32914

Promising 30 great games is not a wise idea; many game companies struggle to release one half-way decent game. D3 Publisher set out to deliver a fun, value-priced experience for the Wii U, but came up horrendously short.

Choosing your character illustrates the first of many problems. You enter your own name, but the game calls you a preset name. Though I wasn’t expecting it to audibly say my real name, the screen read “Zack” but the audio would call me names like “Lucius” and “Chano.” Those were based on the few name choices it gave me. This is exacerbated by the annoying game mascot, a bear in a letterman jacket who offers commentary on everything you do. The voice acting is repetitive, and phrases like “dancing into first place” are reused many times, along with mini-games consistently being referred to merely as “this game.”

Immediately upon starting, you are given the choice between Challenge Mode and Freeplay. The only difference: one is a set number of mini-games in a themed zone, and the other is just the mini-games without any restrictions.  Challenge Mode consists of multiple Wii Remote mini-games with bonus Wii U GamePad games earned by the winning player in a bonus game. Often, The bonus game is chosen by spinning a wheel, though often the same bonus game is awarded multiple times in one sitting because of the limited choice and random nature of spinning a wheel to pick the game. Not all mini-games are unlocked from the beginning which emphasizes the lack of choices.

Each mini-game presents a new set of issues. The main problem in most games is poor implementation of motion controls. In one game, for example, you shake the remote to ride a horse. Not only could this  have easily been accomplished with the D-pad but it also can create pain in your wrist because waggling is required in almost every game. Multiplayer is supported in each game up to four players, and works the same as playing solo with the only real difference being that there are now multiple people sharing in your misery.

Even though 30 games are present none of them offer much in the way of greatness. Each one is devoid of fun, here are a few of the low-lights:

Chancy Crane: Pick out dice with a crane, roll them, and the highest score wins! There is not much gameplay in this one which makes it a prime choice for not being a “Great Game.” Not only that, but poor depth perception due to bad visuals often leaves players attempting to pick up the same dice multiple times.

Flying Teacups: In this game you shake the Wii Remote to power up, then shake again to make a teacup fly in the air in order to collect points. Waggle is a common problem in 30 Great Games, and basing a whole mini-game around this one flawed mechanic cannot be forgiven.

Horse Jump: While waggling to run, players must jump over fences to win.  Again, with waggling a central gameplay mechanic, this game is not enjoyable.

Magical Panels: Competitors have to step on all the panels on the floor to win. This mini-game would have been acceptable if it had not gone for a side view. Since this game requires you to look at the floor, a top-down perspective would have made this game less mediocre.

The Wii U GamePad games are sparse and offer little fun. One game called Hide the Joker has the GamePad wielding player moving playing cards around while the other players guess  which cards are not the Joker. It is not even remotely interesting.

The visual design is colorful, but beyond that it offers nothing else graphically. Backgrounds are generic, with themes like “western” and “space”, and become sickeningly boring the more you play. Character models are the worst offender, with beady little eyes and clothes that look like they are attached to the avatar’s skin. Medals can be earned in the games, but all they do is add a small icon to high score lists.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is a mess. It makes a promise it can’t keep, assaults your ears with annoying voice acting, and sucks all the fun out of owning a Wii U. It is the coal under the tree that is Wii U.

TalkBack / Jewel Master: Cradle of Egypt 2 Review
« on: December 31, 2012, 07:08:23 PM »

If you love construction work and puzzles, you may enjoy this game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/32898

Jewel Master: Cradle of Egypt 2 is a match three style puzzle game for the Nintendo DS published by Rising Star Games. The game aims to make this style of puzzle game more interesting by introducing a new mechanic: accumulate resources to construct Egypt. Sadly, building a civilization by playing puzzles is a quite tedious affair.

Match three games are simple. You swap icons (or in this case jewels, tomatoes, and other items useful for civilization building) in order to match three or more in a row. There are multiple obstacles while playing each puzzle that vary from level to level such as multiple table designs, which alter the placement of jewels, and locked symbols, as well as items to be earned that can help you, like bombs. These items are earned during the puzzles by matching certain jewels so unless you purposefully work for them, they won’t be used much. As a match three game, Cradle of Egypt 2 more than succeeds in delivering well-made puzzles.

Cradle of Egypt 2 also boasts a nice amount of content with 100 stages in the main campaign mode, called Adventure Mode. A Tourney Mode also exists where you re-play levels from Adventure mode to earn trophies by completing levels under specific time limits. Unless in-game awards interest you, these trophies don’t amount to much. Another mode, called Blitz mode, is unlocked after you finish the game, and gives you the option to replay the same levels in a row, yet again, within a limited time frame.

The visual presentation is fair, as different scenes of ancient Egypt are placed on the top screen in order to add atmosphere. The music is not too annoying, but the game is just as enjoyable without it. Menus are easy to navigate and let you get right into the puzzle action. Through a tiny icon on the main menu you can also access in-game achievements which are split between trophies, and citizens who unlock bonuses in Adventure Mode.

The game unfortunately falters in the main conceit of constructing Egypt in the Adventure Mode. You earn resources based on which icons you match while playing through the levels, which resources can be traded to build buildings in each epoch. Unfortunately, trying to match the same icons repeatedly can become tedious. What keeps this idea from truly succeeding, though, is that building structures really only gives you more resources. The reward is more tedium, and there is no real reason to build anything unless you want to fill a map. Thankfully, construction progress does not dictate you when you get to move to the next level -- only finishing the current level does. While the idea was a sound one in theory, it was a detriment to the overall experience.

Match three games are common enough that developers really have to do something special to stand out. Cradle of Egypt 2 tries to perform this task by letting you build Egypt, but it doesn’t really succeed. This puzzle game formula still works, but nothing particularly new is offered here. If you are a fan of match-three games, you will enjoy the puzzles but not much else.

Nollie away from this one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewmini/32841

Zombies have long been a common go-to in games. Zombie Skape tries to make the concept more rad by adding a skateboard. Playing as skater Ethan, you must avoid zombies and rescue girls in an arcade-style game that has you aiming for a high score.

Zombie Skape’s simple controls have you using the D-pad to maneuver the skateboard left and right along several creepy avenues, and the face buttons to brake and jump. The controls are quite unresponsive and make it feel like you are skating through several inches of snow, a problem made even more frustrating by the zombies and other obstacles on screen. Attempting to avoid a zombie may cause you to hit another because of the lethargic response time.

Everything about Zombie Skape feels cheap. There is little animation to the zombies, and although rescuing girls earns you points that add to your high score, there aren’t many to grab. After a few playthroughs, you may find no reason to come back and top the local rankings.

Zombie Skape is low quality all the way to its end credits, which, mercifully, you can reach in less than 15 minutes.
