TalkBack / Coaster Creator 3D Review
« on: March 01, 2013, 04:55:26 PM »

Has its ups and downs.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/33475

Coaster Creator 3D lets 3DS owners create and ride their own roller coasters. I had low expectations after the much maligned Roller Coaster Tycoon 3D but was pleasantly surprised by Digital Gamers efforts.

Coaster Creator offers up two modes, Career mode and Sandbox mode. The former is comprised of dry challenges; the latter is a fun creation tool. Career mode has you working for Mr. McGee, an old man who brought you in to bring life to his old coasters. Challenges vary from hitting certain theme park checkpoints on a coaster to having one vary its speeds. While you don’t need to play Career mode to build coasters in Sandbox mode, Career mode is the only way to unlock all customizable parts for Sandbox mode.

The vast amount of customization in Sandbox mode makes Roller Coaster Creator 3D shine. When building a coaster, every part of the design is up to you. Even after you draw the layout, you can still adjust the coaster’s turns, drops, and loops and design the park around your creation. Sadly, the park you design is largely inconsequential considering its sole purpose is to provide decoration to look at while riding a coaster.

The visuals of Coaster Creator 3D are quite decent. The coasters are realistic looking but with cartoony colors. Character models are quite ugly but can be replaced by Miis after a certain point in the game. The 3D is hit or miss, though; heavy ghosting appears when the 3D slider is moved to the maximum setting.

There is one part of Coaster Creator that is truly terrible, and it goes by the name of Star Roller. It is a mini-game that has you collecting stars while riding your coasters. This mini-game is absolutely pointless. You do not unlock anything or have any semblance of fun playing it.

Though Career Mode is tedious and makes unlocking new elements a chore, the customization options and freedom you have when building coasters are worth the fuss. Coaster Creator 3D is a fun tool for any coaster fan or theme park enthusiast.

TalkBack / The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Preview
« on: March 01, 2013, 11:39:34 AM »

In the days before the prison and the farmhouse, there was Survival Instinct

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/33473

The Walking Dead is a wildly popular franchise that started with a comic book and has expanded to a TV series, books, and video games. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a first-person shooter unlike Telltale’s adventure game based in the comic book continuity. Though not the first Walking Dead game, it is the first set in the continuity of the TV series.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a prequel to the TV series. The game follows Daryl and Merle Dixon, voiced by series actors Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker, on their journey though Georgia traveling to Atlanta, one of the first locations in the first season of The Walking Dead. Players take control of Daryl as they embark on two kinds of missions, main missions and road events. Main mission are more story driven and involve circumstances like finding supplies or saving survivors while avoiding herds of walkers (the name given for zombies in the show) while on main missions, you can send members of your group out on their own mission. You decide where they go and what they bring from your cache of supplies. Each group member had multiple strengths and weakness that can help or hinder your progress.  Road events are random occurrences throughout your travels on the highway that can involve anything like moving cars out of the way of your vehicle or anything that may require a decision.

Decisions are a core element of Survival Instinct -- everything you do is decision-based. When finding people to add to your group, you have to decide if they are trustworthy. If there is not enough space in your car you need to decide which members of the group stay and which get the boot. The decisions you make add to the replay value of the game since there is no turning back. Playing the game multiple times is necessary to play all of the missions.

Vehicles found throughout the game store supplies and carry members of your group. Some cars can carry more supplies while others more passengers. As the name implies, this game is all about survival. Unlike many first-person shooters and more like a survival horror game, ammo and supplies are scarce. Resource management is a major part of Survival Instinct, with only a limited amount of space to store items that are shared throughout your entire group. Cars run out of fuel and may force you to give up supplies due to lack of space in the next vehicle you use. In order to conserve supplies, the game can be played stealthily. The walkers are attracted by sight, sound, and smell, so when sneaking by, distractions can be used to keep them busy. When Walkers come after you, you can fight them using anything you can obtain throughout the game, be it a baseball bat, handgun, crossbow, or anything of the like. Like other zombie lore, the only way to kill walkers is to destroy their brain.

The Walking Dead Survival: Instinct releases on Wii U March 26 in North America and March 29 in Europe.

TalkBack / Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: An Unnecessary Remake
« on: February 19, 2013, 06:28:45 PM »
It is indeed a pretty unnecessary remake, I had no problems with the motion controls and while 3D is cool, it hardly justifies paying for the same game twice. It annoys me how Majora's Mask, the one game that really needs and deserves a 3DS remake still hasn't gotten one, despite OoT3D coming out more than 18 months ago and even The Wind Waker getting remade.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, Olympion sums up my opinion quite well. To be honest I may play this 3DS port/remake since I barely played any of the original, but I do still think porting Wii games should not be a priority.

TalkBack / Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: An Unnecessary Remake
« on: February 19, 2013, 09:28:24 AM »

A remake of a three-year-old game? Fine, go bananas!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/33358

Being a Nintendo fan, I know the company likes to unearth classic games to rerelease in the form of Virtual Console ports or remakes. With Donkey Kong Country Returns (DKCR), Nintendo does not need to do any unearthing, because the game is still on store shelves!

Remaking DKCR is a silly idea in some aspects, but a good idea in others. While some may count this as a port, I call it a remake (call it whatever you like). But before you go ape **** (get it?) reading this, I think we can all agree that this game is not old. Released in 2010, it is still widely available for purchase. You can also play it on the Wii U. Considering these factors, I would say DKCR does not require a remake.

One feature of this new version that might be regarded as an improvement is the lack of motion controls. The original DKCR sported waggle controls that were awkward in many people’s opinions. Their absence may be used as a defense for the new game, but don't all great games have their flaws? If we go by this reasoning alone, shouldn’t every waggle-fest be given a second chance? OK, maybe not every waggle game matches the quality of DKCR, but is this one fix enough to get people to buy it?

Popular opinion of the 3D feature is also mixed, so using it as the main reason for the remake may not be a good idea. Some may argue that 3D was the biggest draw for Ocarina of Time 3D, but that game also came with a complete graphical overhaul, which is something that DKCR does not need. It also came out at a time when 3DS releases were sparse and the Zelda 25th anniversary celebration was in full swing. At this moment in time, I just don't think DKCR 3D has such a compelling set of reasons to be made.

I’m not saying the game will be bad, and I’m not even saying I won't buy it. The point I’m trying to make is that I can think of better ways Nintendo could allocate its resources, and that whatever this version costs is a waste.

The Wii U sold about 57,000 units in January, according to figures obtained by CNET.

He also shares his thoughts on Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33276

Mutant Mudds 2 will see a release sometime in 2014, which is a delay to the expected 2013 release.

When it comes to the Wii U, Watsham feels that even though Q1 will be tough he "predict(s) that the 2013 holiday season will be huge for the Wii U," adding that "Nintendo’s campaign for the Wii U has only just begun."

Other Renegade Kid titles ATV Wild Ride 3D on 3DS and Mutant Mudds Deluxe on Wii U are planned Q1 and Q2 releases. ATV Wild Ride 3D was recently submitted to Nintendo.
