The Wonderful 101 leads this week's releases.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35428

This week a couple new games come out, including the highly anticipated The Wonderful 101 and a new Wii U bundle. Of course, if you are in the mood for a licensed game you have a few choices too.

Wii U:

The Wonderful 101 - $59.99, September 15

The Wonderful 101 by Platinum Games has received a wide range of opinions from reviewers. Our own James Dawson and Daan Koopman  both reviewed and enjoyed it though. If we say it is good that means it is a fact. Sometimes wacky, sometimes wonderful, you can pick it up starting today.

Hot Wheels: World's Best Driver - $39.99, September 17

From Firebrand Games, the developer behind Need for Speed The Run (Wii, 3DS) and Cars 2 (3DS, DS), comes a game that would make any Matchbox fan jealous. World's Best Driver on the Wii U offers up 24 customizable vehicles and tracks to race on including what may be the most dangerous event ever in video game history, freestyle stunts on top of Shanghai Skyscrapers.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Limited Edition Bundle - $299.99, September 20

The remastered GameCube classic is coming to the Nintendo eShop this week along with a new Wii U bundle with a lower price. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Limited Edition Wii U Bundle comes with a digital copy of the newly enhanced Zelda adventure, a digital copy of Hyrule Historia, and a fun Triforce themed GamePad.

3DS:

Hot Wheels: World's Best Driver - $29.99, September 17

Not much is known about the 3DS version of this game. I can tell you though it will be in 3D!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 - $29.99, September 17

Fun with food without the risk of salmonella! With a story mode and mini-games, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 may just be NWR's Game of the Year. With a total of 6 characters to play as you may never put it down.

Come by next week to see what other groundbreaking releases will be coming to Nintendo systems.

Maybe the graphics are too much for the Wii U to handle? Then again...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35346

When asked whether Minecraft, developed by Mojang, would come to Nintendo systems, Nintendo's business development manager, Dan Adelman, said "What can we say on that front? [laughs]."

Nintendo has a "continuing relationship with Mojang" according to senior manager of marketing for licensing, Damon Baker, despite the lack of Minecraft on Nintendo systems. He went on to say that one of the reasons Nintendo goes to events like the recent PAX Prime, is so they can see what games companies are making for other platforms.

Previously Mojang has said it was "very unlikely" that Minecraft would come to a Nintendo system. Minecraft is available on PC and Xbox 360, and is coming to the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita.

TalkBack / Fly Your Way into This Month's Club Nintendo Games
« on: September 03, 2013, 06:31:28 PM »

Pilotwings and StarTropics II among this month's Club Nintendo games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35342

This month's Club Nintendo rewards are Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, Pilotwings, Art Academy: First Semester, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!.

Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II was one of the later NES games released in 1994. Like many other games, the story consists of an alien invasion you must save the world from. This time though, you have to travel through history to do it. This can be yours for 150 coins and can be played on the Wii or Wii Mode on the Wii U.

The SNES classic Pilotwings is the next reward. For 150 coins you can fly planes, skydive, and be a penguin diving from tall heights. It is playable on the Wii and Wii Mode on the Wii U. You can also then upgrade this copy to the Wii U version for $1.50 on the eShop.

Art Academy: First Semester is filled with lessons on how to be an artist. Fun fact, Salvador Dali used this game to learn how to paint. Though it is a DSiWare title, to get it through Club Nintendo you have to download it on the 3DS eShop. It is only 150 coins.

Finally is Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!. In this entry of the series, Donkey Kong kidnaps Pauline, most likely due to self confidence issues that made him feel he was not worthy of Peach. Conduct a group of Mario toys in order to take down the banana eating menace. You can download it on the 3DS eShop for 150 coins.

The man with no arms carries the Wii U on his back.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35321

This week Rayman Legends visits the restaurant that is Nintendo systems with a party of one. With no other games scheduled to hit retail locations, Ubisoft has become a lone wolf in the Nintendo market. Here are this week's releases.

Wii U:

Rayman Legends - $59.99, September 3

Originally intended to be a Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends was pushed back in order to bring it to other consoles. After the initial leaked trailer, Nintendo fans have been clamoring to get their filthy Mario gloves over the title. Now it's finally here, and apparently very good. Our own Scott Thompson has reviewed the game and given it high marks. Though the last game he reviewed was Game & Wario, so that might make any game look good.

Check by next week to see what is coming out, if anything, on Nintendo systems.

TalkBack / LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey Review
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:20:10 PM »

The power of the Triple Chi is in your hands!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/35302

LEGO Legends of Chima is a multimedia effort by The LEGO Group that tells the story of anthropomorphic animals through play sets, a TV show, and video games. LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval’s Journey follows a young lion, Laval, on his quest to restore balance of the Chi, which was destroyed by his former friend Cragger while trying to build Triple Chi armor, a very powerful form of Chi.

Story aside, Laval’s Journey is quite similar to other LEGO 3DS titles. Like other entries in the franchise, LEGO Legends of Chima consists of 3D platforming involving the collection of studs, characters, and extras. Character types are divided into different animal species, and  each offers a different ability that’s needed throughout levels to complete the game.

Separating Laval’s Journey from other LEGO games are its large hub world and the use of Chi. Compared to other handheld LEGO games, the hub world has much more exploration, with different areas available as you continue through the story. It is not a full on open-world as found in LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, but it is still sizable. Secondly, Chi offers up new ways for your characters to interact with enemies and the environment. It makes all characters temporarily stronger, allowing them to quickly take out enemies and perform large feats of strength. Like The Force in Star Wars, Chi is a powerful force that can be used for good or evil and is found everywhere.

Laval’s Journey presents a fully voice acted experience that helps to bring life to the characters, though some of it is quite cheesy—Laval’s Californian surfer  accent comes to mind. The 3D effect is affective in adding depth to the visuals, but sadly cannot save the game from monotony. To reach 100% completion players have to replay the story multiple times, which adds to the repetitiveness already found in the game. Fighting the same enemies and  searching for items to open doors multiple times becomes tiresome. Side missions are also present but bring confusion rather than variety. Each side mission is an untracked fetch quest, so a good memory is needed to remember what you need to find.

LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval’s Journey is not a bad game, but leaves much to be desired. The sense that you have already played it becomes overwhelming, as if an older sibling smashed your hard work so you had to build it again. There are better LEGO games out there, but if you have a child into the world of Chima the experience will be satisfying enough due to familiar voices and spiffy visuals.

In an interview with Joystiq, the head of Team Ninja, Yosuke Hayashi, said, "Of course, I think there are games that would be good for Wii U. So I think we need to still see what exactly those games they are and how you make a game for Wii U that is perfect for the Wii U. "

Currently, Team Ninja is working on Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z.

TalkBack / Shadow of the Eternals Fails to Reach Funding Goal
« on: August 24, 2013, 04:55:50 PM »

The second crowdfunding attempt has ended with a thud.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35265

Shadow of the Eternals has failed to reach its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Planned to be the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, the Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter campaign only managed to make $323,950 in pledges, far short of its $750,000 goal.

This was the second attempt by Precursor Games to fund the game through Kickstarter, after the first was cancelled.

The game was originally scheduled to be published for the Wii U, along with the PC and PS4.

TalkBack / Retro City Rampage Coming to the 3DS Later This Year
« on: August 21, 2013, 02:49:44 PM »

The WiiWare game is making its way to the 3DS eShop

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35248

Retro City Rampage is making its way onto the 3DS, Nintendo and developer Vblank announced today.

Originally released on other platforms including the Wii, Retro City Rampage is an 8-bit style take on Grand Theft Auto that pays tribute to games of the era.

The 3DS version will include all the content from other platforms including the Retro+ Enhanced Graphics mode, though missions are being tweaked in order to work with the more zoomed in camera, due to the system's limitations. The game will not have 3D, due to its top-down view, which would require all objects to be rendered in 3D.

Retro City Rampage will be playable at PAX Prime on the 3DS at Nintendo's booth.

Will Disney Infinity succeed or will it leave the company executives feeling like Eeyore?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35210

Disney Infinity cost The Walt Disney Company $100 million according to insiders close to the company.

The high budget of Disney Infinity includes the cost of making both the game and the figures that go along with it. Disney CEO Robert "Bob" Iger alluded to how the game will affect Disney Interactive back in February saying, "If 'Infinity does well, it bodes very well for the bottom line of this unit. If it doesn't do well, the opposite will be the case."

Disney Infinity releases in North America on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS (subtitled Toy Box Challenge) on August 18, and in Europe on August 23.

TalkBack / 3DS Remains Best-Selling System in the United States
« on: August 15, 2013, 08:47:21 PM »

Earthbound is also doing well for itself on the Wii U eShop.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35202

The Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling game platform for the month of July in the United States.

For the third month in a row, the 3DS was the top selling game system in the U.S. Nintendo attributes this with the continued success of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which sold 150,000 physical and digital copies combined in July. The 3DS itself is up 14 percent in sales from last July, while software for the handheld is up 45 percent. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon also reached 820,000 physical and digital combined units sold this last month.

On the Wii U front, Earthbound (Virtual Console) is doing well with no specific numbers given. It was said however that the only two games to generate more revenue in the same amount of time since launch were New Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3.

TalkBack / The Year of No Mario- Making Mario More Than a Corporate Icon
« on: August 15, 2013, 08:45:29 PM »

Giving Mario a break will make him a better man for it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/35204

Mario is not your friend. You may think he is, but he isn't. Mario has become too big and too busy to hang out with you anymore. Mario has become more of a corporate icon than a video game character, similar to the problems Mickey Mouse has faced. Not only that, but Mario games are released far more frequently than any other Nintendo franchise, giving folks like Kirby less room to breathe. That is why I would like to propose the Year of No Mario.

We see a lot of Mario games, some might say too many, but Nintendo pumps them out because they always sell rather well. With the Year of No Mario, Nintendo could use Mario as a means to capitalize on their other franchises or maybe even a new franchise. This is how it would work: in a series of online videos, something Nintendo has started getting good at, Mario sees how well the Year of Luigi has worked. In the Nintendo boardroom he explains how he is taking a year off to relax because he has been working nonstop for over 30 years. This is where the Year of No Mario begins. Because Mario takes a vacation, all the other characters, presumably also in the boardroom, need to pick up the slack.

So what games would the Year of No Mario entail? Theoretically if a big Mario game like Mario Kart 8 were put on the backburner, something would have to replace it. How about Nintendo Kart? All the tracks would be Nintendo themed areas – Hyrule, Dreamland, Zebes – and racers would be Nintendo characters – Link, Kirby, Samus – in an effort to open up the franchise.

Given the chance could Kirby suck up some of the mainstream Mario audience?

The Year of No Mario would also work as a way of improving consumer outlook on the Mario brand and Nintendo as a whole. If there is one problem I see with Mario, it is how much of a corporate icon he is. While that might sound like a good thing business-wise, think about this: whose recommendation would you take more seriously when it comes to which game to play, A PR representative or a close friend?

Nintendo systems have been a staple of living rooms around the world for over many years. Mario himself sold many NES systems, not PR about how the system would revolutionize how you enjoy entertainment. Bring Mario to a personal level and you will win the consumer over, because they do love Mario; look at the sales if you don’t believe me. The Wii U has no clear message, maybe Mario could be it. Not just by showing consumers what the GamePad can do technically, but how much fun they can have with it.

In case you have not realized it by now, the Year of No Mario is a somewhat misleading name, because there would still be Mario, just not in the form of games. The Year of No Mario would capitalize on other Nintendo franchises and bring Mario back to a relatable level with consumers rather than leaving him the far-off corporate mascot he’s become.

TalkBack / Pilotwings Stage Possibly Coming to Super Smash Bros. Wii U

A Pilotwings stage may be coming to the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., according to the latest daily image posted on the Smash Bros.' website.

The most recent picture is a map from the original Pilotwings on the Super Nintendo for the Wii U version of Smash Bros. It most likely means a Pilotwings stage is coming to at least the Wii U game. However, it is possible it could be something else like a trophy.

Super Smash Bros. comes to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS sometime in 2014.
