Get ready to pull your hair out in one of Mario's toughest adventures.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36159

This month's Club Nintendo games are Mario's Picross, Starship Defense, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and Balloon Fight.

Mario's Picross is the 3DS Virtual Console release of the now classic Game Boy puzzle game. Chip away at grids to form images, many of which are themed around the famous mustachioed plumber. This can be your new gaming addiction for only 100 coins, and is available only on the 3DS eShop.

In one of the best games released on the DSiWare service, Starship Defense is a tower defense game set in space. 150 coins will earn you this one, only on the 3DS eShop.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was actually the original Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan. Deemed too hard for the American audience, we received a Mario version of Doki Doki Panic instead. From the start this is one challenging Mario game, you can face your fears and play it for only 150 coins on the Wii U eShop.

The last Club Nintendo game is the NES classic Balloon Fight. In a game very similar to Joust you, uh...to tell you the truth I don't know what the heck is going on in that game, except that you don't want your balloons popped. It is a fun game though! It can be yours for 200 coins on the Wii U eShop.

These games will be yours for the taking until January 12, when they will be replaced by four different games, so act fast.

A free update is coming to Mutant Mudds on the 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36120

Treasurenauts has been delayed from a late 2013 release to a Q1 release in 2014. Jools Watsham, co-founder and director at developer and eShop publisher Renegade Kid, revealed this news on his blog.

The reasons for the delay given were not related to issues with the game, but the team's goal to make it the best game possible. With the delay of Treasurenauts also came the news of Mutant Mudds 2 development being placed on hold. This is being done in order to work on another 2D platformer, which is probably one of the two unannounced games he mentioned that are in the works.

Mutant Mudds on the Nintendo 3DS will also be recieiving a free update. No information has been given besides a release of sometime in 2014, and that " It will be luxurious!"

Renegade Kid has published  and the developed many games on Nintendo systems, and has more in the works including the previously announced survival horror game Cult County.

In celebration of Thanksgiving, Zack takes a look at all the stuff we should be thankful for this year in Nintendo.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/36084

Thanksgiving is a day Americans visit with their families and celebrate all the special things they are thankful for while stuffing their gullets with the suffering of turkeys across the nation. In honor of this national tradition, I thought I would share with you all what I’m thankful for in the world of Nintendo.  Now my children, while I prepare this Yoshi for our Nintendo World Report feast, you should read this list, for it is what the Pilgrims came to this country for.

The Year of Luigi:

Luigi has always been the second fiddle to Mario. In order to celebrate over 30 years of being in his brother’s shadow, Nintendo decided to give him his own year.  This was easily the best decision Nintendo has ever made. In a tough situation, with a not so successful console, why not make him the selling point?  To that end we got New Super Luigi U. The one thing Nintendo needed was another New Super game, because 2 entries in two years was not enough. Now that the year is coming to the end l give thanks to Nintendo for giving us more Luigi. If I learned anything from Nintendo this year, it is that second best is good enough.

PlayStation:

Did you know PlayStation came about after Nintendo made a deal with Sony for a CD based add-on for the Super Nintendo? When they decided to go with Philips instead, which never panned out, Sony felt betrayed, took the technology, and made the original PlayStation.  With this in mind we can come to the conclusion that everything good that has come out of PlayStation is because of Nintendo’s doing. Franchises like Gran Turismo and Little Big Planet are some of Nintendo’s finest efforts. Heck, Nintendo even made the PS Vita and PS4. You really know that with Nintendo, with every decision they make, greatness awaits.

Electronic Arts:

Due to poor sales, Electronic Arts is giving very little support to the Wii U. In a great move Nintendo has helped save money on titles like Battlefield 4 and Need for Speed: Rivals. By not making these games on the Wii U, EA has saved so much money that they will be able to make more titles not on the Wii U.

Game Store Employees:

This past August when Splinter Cell Blacklist came out, I went into GameStop, a place that specializes in vidja games, and asked if they had the game for the Wii U. The store clerk went on to laugh with his co-worker, shook his head, and said something along the lines of “No, no we don’t. We have it on Xbox though.” That made me feel so great. It is just one of the hidden benefits of being a Nintendo gamer.

-

So that is what I am thankful for this year. The Yoshi is ready and Kirby just arrived with desserts, so I better get going. Be sure to stop by this site next Arbor day as I will be discussing what Nintendo games give me wood. Happy Holidays!

TalkBack / Super Mario 3D World Suffers Low Sales in Japan
« on: November 28, 2013, 02:03:11 AM »

Super Mario 3D World has the lowest first week sales of any 3D Mario game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36080

Super Mario 3D World debuted second in Japanese sales charts with 99,588 units sold.

Bested by Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 14, which managed to sell over 250k copies, Super Mario 3D World's sales were quite low compared to other Mario games. Its sales placed it as the lowest debut of any 3D Mario game in Japan, below Super Mario 64 DS. In comparison, the best debut was Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Wii with over 330k games purchased.

The Wii U was the third best selling system the past week at 21,002 units sold, below the 3DS at 63,709 and the Sony PlayStation Vita at 21,044 (42 units more than the Wii U).

Cat Mario? Okay, now I'm interested.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35996

The Xbox One may be launching this week, but Nintendo fans truly have their hands full. Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds are poised to be two of the best games of the year. Beyond that the latest Mario Party is here on the 3DS. If this week does not excite you then you probably just don't like Nintendo.

Wii U

Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW! - $39.99, November 19

The newest Adventure Time Game is the first on the Wii U. While I still don’t understand what people find funny about this show, it is good to see its games supporting Nintendo systems. Exploring dungeons is what this one is all about.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/33109"> Super Mario 3D World - $59.99, November 22

Super Mario 3D World may be my most anticipated game of 2013. This new Mario 3D platformer has four player local multiplayer, Mario transforming into a cat, and a big band soundtrack. Everything about this game looks great. Fun gameplay and pretty visuals just may make this many people’s game of the year

Wii

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/35935"> Zumba Kids, November 19- $29.99

3DS

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/34766"> Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW! - $29.99, November 19

The second 3DS Adventure Time game. If you get the humor of the show, which I don’t, you can look forward to a funny game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/34721"> Girl’s Fashion Shoot - $29.99, November 19

As much as I dream of being a model, I don’t know if I am going to play Girl’s Fashion Shoot. With all of the customizable outfits, I just won’t be able to decide on my new look.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/34366"> Young Justice: Legacy- $29.99, November 19

Cancelled on the Wii and Wii U, Young Justice: Legacy is still hitting the 3DS. The game expands the story of the show it is based on, filling in the gap between seasons one and two. A whopping 12 playable characters and appearances by heroes like Batman make this one super game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/33891"> The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds- $39.99, November 22

Do you feel it? Do you hear it? The phenomenon you are experiencing is hype. Hype can become a powerful force when a new Zelda game comes out. The newest Zelda adventure finds the hero of time on a new quest, and is one of the biggest 3DS games this year.

Mario Party Island Tour- $39.99, November 22

While the past handheld Mario Party games have been not that great, Mario Party Island Tour might buck that trend. Until reviews start coming, I am being cautiously optimistic about this one.

The week in which you consider buying a PS4.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35931

I may write for this Nintendo website, but to be quite honest, unless Nintendo hold’s another Nintendo Direct the majority of my gaming attention is being placed on Sony this week. Hate me all you want, but the PlayStation 4 is kind of a big deal. Don't be sad though, Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds are just around the corner, so my attention won't be divided for very long.

Wii U

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games - $49.99, November 15

Also available in a Wii Remote Plus bundle, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games brings all the fun of the Olympics to your Wii U without the incredibly cold temperatures and NBC commentary. I reviewed this game and liked it, although the online multiplayer is very disappointing.

TalkBack / Wii U Experiences Large Sales Increase in Japan
« on: November 06, 2013, 05:02:31 PM »

A new bundle and a new game help the system get back on its feet.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35903

Last week in Japan, the Wii U managed to sell 38,802 units, placing it at no. 2 on the sales charts.

While the best selling system in Japan remains the Nintendo 3DS and its various models, with 88,376 units sold, the bump in Wii U sales was an increase of about 1393%. This dramatic rise is due to the release of Wii Party U, and a system bundle with the game. Wii Party U was the 6th best selling game at around 37 thousand units sold.

Metroid, an Art Style Game, and the original Rolling Western also present.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35890

This month's Club Nintendo rewards are Metroid, Dillon's Rolling Western, Art Style: CUBELLO, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

The original Metroid, like many other NES games of the time, is quite cryptic. With few instructions given, you explore the planet Zebes as bounty hunter Samus Aran. Use her abilities to shoot and roll into a ball in this 3DS Virtual Console Release for only 150 coins.

Dillon's Rolling Western is one of Nintendo's recent new IPs that everyone likes to ignore. Playing as Dillon the armadillo, you get to roll around in this tower defense game. This can be yours for 200 coins and is only on the 3DS/2DS.

Art Style: CUBELLO is another one of those weird Nintendo games no one ever talks about. In this WiiWare title you shoot cubes to eliminate other cubes from a rotating object, with the objective being to clear out all the cubes. For 150 coins you can download this game on the Wii or Wii Mode on the Wii U.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past must be annoying to other games. It is constantly being called the greatest game of all time. Like why can't other SNES classics, like Shaq Fu, get the chance to shine. Either way, this Zelda adventure marks the beginning of many gameplay ideas, mechanics, music, and thematic elements that have continued on throughout the series. For 150 coins you too can become a legend on the Wii or Wii Mode on the Wii U.

Be sure to grab these titles soon because they are only available until December 8 when they will then be replaced by another four games.

TalkBack / Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games Review
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:39:56 AM »

No dashboard camera ever could capture images of this skiing hedgehog

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/35896

Mario and Sonic’s fourth team effort is another sports mini-game collection, albeit an enjoyable one. When it comes to these kinds of titles the quality of the package as a whole is determined by how many of the games are good. Thankfully, in this case, there really is not one that sticks out as being “bad.” While none of the sports are perfect, the motion controls paired with the slick visuals make for an entertaining time.

Like previous entries in the Mario & Sonic series, events are split up into two categories: Olympic Events and Dream Events.  The Olympic Events feature eight real life sports including skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, and others that accumulate into a cavalcade of sometimes-stale events.

Almost every event uses motion controls. Some use the GamePad, others use a Wii Remote Plus, and a few have you switching between both.  The best uses of the GamePad were the ones that take advantage of buttons. This provided a good alternative for the parts of games where motion controls just didn’t work.  Take for example, 4-Man Bobsleigh. This event uses both ZL and ZR trigger buttons, along with movements of the GamePad. Instead of making the starting run a motion controlled mess, you alternate tapping ZL and ZR, then board the bobsled by flicking the GamePad up, as if jumping onto the sleigh. You control your character, the team leader, by turning the GamePad while directing your teammates’ movements by holding either ZL or ZR.

Other games are controlled using solely the Wii Remote Plus, and are mostly effective in their implementation. One problem I did encounter were any events where your character could lean forward. Since some of these events only used the Wii Remote, it requires you to be holding it at an angle to lean, similar to when you point the Wii Remote at the sensor bar, and it felt uncomfortable to move the remote while having it at that angle.

The three standout Olympic events had to be Ski Jump Large Hill, Freestyle Ski Cross, and 4-Man Bobsleigh. Each of them did a good job of creating a sense of speed, while effectively using motion controls. The two worst were Curling and Figure Skating. Curling, a sport many (myself included) don’t understand, was made more nonsensical by having the stone toss part controlled by the strength of the flick of a remote, which was rather inaccurate, and sweeping required pointless waggling. Figure skating was also a not a great time due to constantly changing controls, all of which required awkward movement of the remote. The only redeeming part of Figure skating was the choice of music, including renditions of music from Super Mario Land, among other games.

While you would think that the Dream Events would be the more fun of the two types of events, considering more freedom developers could have and not being tied down by the laws of reality, they were mostly so-so. They ranged from being a sport with a Mario or Sonic theme thrown over it to just plain stupid events like moving a giant ball into a hole. The only one that I found worthwhile was Roller Coaster Bobsleigh, an insane take on the sport where you slide down skyscrapers in a sleigh.

A problem that pervaded all the events was the lengthy tutorials. While it is definitely useful to be shown how to play some of these games, it became frustrating when others wanted to play and would have trouble following along with the tutorial, or if they just wanted to play without taking a college level course. The controls are too complicated for a newcomer, unlike Wii Sports, there is not that natural understanding of how to play each event, like swinging the remote to swing the bat. Instead controls require multiple elements that don’t always make the game any more of an elegant experience.

All the events could be played throughout the games different modes. Medley Mania allows you to string together events to play, or pick from existing playlists. Single Match and Worldwide Vs are about what you would expect. Legends Showdown is a mode were you make your way through different stages, face off against non-playable characters such as Birdo, and unlock costumes and equipment used to adjust your Mii’s abilities. Unfortunately, it isn’t as fun as it sounds because it forces you to play through events that you may not like. The final mode is the Action & Answer Tour. This was a nonsensical competition of rounds where players are asked a question, like who is the best skier, which is then answered by whoever skis the best.

While I wasn’t able to utilize many of the online features to their full capabilites, since the game hasn’t launched yet, I did get to try them out a little. There wasn’t much to do using Miiverse besides giving tips on sports, which is something that you could already do on a regular Miiverse page. There is also online rankings and play. Every time you get a new best score on an event, a message appears asking whether you would like to upload it, which became tiresome. Why it isn’t just done automatically in the background is beyond me.  One cool use of online features was facing off against CPU Mii characters on your friends list, and I was able to play against some folks from the NWR staff, despite them not owning the game.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is exactly what it says it is: an Olympics game with Mario and Sonic. While it is fun, it doesn’t necessarily do anything past entries didn’t do. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, because overall it is a solid formula, despite some of its flaws.

TalkBack / What's Old Is New - The GameCube
« on: November 04, 2013, 10:19:03 AM »

As a new owner of a GameCube, Zack shares his thoughts on the little lunchbox of fun.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35865

The GameCube was Nintendo's first foray into the world of disc-based games and its era marked an interesting time for Nintendo. Unlike the days of the NES and SNES, or even the earlier years of the Wii, Nintendo was not at the top of the gaming food chain.

While it was by no means a failure, the GameCube never matched the install base or large library of titles Sony's colossal PlayStation 2 amassed. However, despite lower sales, the system has left a big mark on the industry. With titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker seeing a new life on the Wii U, it has become apparent that the only gaming system with a handle boasts one of the best game libraries of any systems, Nintendo or otherwise.

Sadly, I never owned a GameCube. I was four years old when it was released, and I never owned the right accessories to play its games on the Wii. It wasn't until very recently that I picked up the system along with some games. As a new owner of the console in the year 2013, I've come to it with quite a different perspective then that of a Nintendo fan in 2001. In this ongoing Feature I will share my thoughts on the GameCube with you. Before I start writing about all the GameCube's great games, I'm going to share with you my thoughts on the hardware itself.

When are we getting the Zumba Fitness/Call of Duty crossover?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35873

Unlike the past few weeks, this week is relatively quiet, with the one exception being Call of Duty: Ghosts. Whatever you think about the series, it really is nice to see another big third party release on the Wii U. With so many publishers foregoing the console, Activision gets my approval for bringing Ghosts to the Wii U.

Wii U

Ben 10 Omniverse 2, November 5- $39.99

So from what I can gather, Ben 10 is about this kid, named Ben, who can turn into alien creatures, in order to fight aliens. That is pretty bad-ass. This is just what the Wii U needs right now. This will sell 1 million units within the first day of release. I said it, so now it will happen.

Call of Duty: Ghosts - $59.99, November 5

Like it or not Call of Duty is one of the biggest gaming franchises out there. I know many of you reading this think it is stupid and uncreative, but so is your face. Ha, take that. In all seriousness though, Ghosts will most likely be offering one of if not the best first-person shooters this year, and will feature some of the best online multiplayer to be found on the Wii U.

Zumba Fitness: World Party - $49.99, November 5

I've always wondered if you actually get any real exercise playing this game? I mean are you just flailing your arms around like Kermit the Frog, you know when he gets upset, or is there real merit to the workouts? Find out yourself this Tuesday.

Ben 10 Omniverse 2, November 5- $29.99

The Wii Version of the multiplatform game.

Zumba Fitness: World Party - $29.99, November 5

More Zumba-ing but on the Wii.

3DS

Ben 10 Omniverse 2, November 5- $29.99

This is one of those games where it is on almost every Nintendo platform. As you can see it is coming to the 3DS.

Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed - $29.99, November 5

Based on the popular online game, Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed is a 2D platformer for the 3DS. Apparently it isn't that bad either. Our reviewer Kimberly Keller gave it an 8. I reviewed a Moshi Monsters game once but had quite the opposite experience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/35879"> Power Rangers Megaforce - $39.99, November 5

Did you know Power Rangers was still a thing? I didn't. They even have a new game for the 3DS. I still don't know what in the hell they are fighting, but supposedly it must be important if it got its own game.

DS

Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed - $24.99, November 5

This is the same game that is being released on the 3DS, though it is $5 cheaper, and maybe a little less spiffy looking.

TalkBack / Wii and Wii U Make Up 1% of EA's Quarterly Earnings
« on: October 31, 2013, 06:32:01 PM »

Nintendo handhelds also do little in the way of sales.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35861

Electronic Arts (EA) recent financial report revealed that their games on the Wii and Wii U only make up 1.3% of sales.

The total amount earned last quarter on the Wii and Wii U was 9 million. Sales from games on Nintendo's handhelds only accounted for 0.7%. In comparison, sales on the PS3 (18.8%) and Xbox 360(24%) were much higher. Mobile games made up 10.8% of sales and PlayStation handhelds 1.0%. PC dominated with 39.4%

It is worth noting that EA's most recent releases on the Wii U and Wii were Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Wii U), in March, and FIFA 14 (Wii) which was the same game as FIFA 13, but with updated rosters.
