TalkBack / Re: New Super Mario Bros. Mii Preview
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:30:06 AM »
Super Mario World featured baby Yoshis that needed to be fed before they would turn into adult Yoshis. If anything, I think that statement on the World Map might hint toward the return of that type of mechanic. Though, I'm not sure about the whole balloon thing.

Color me pumped. Super Mario World is the best in 2D Mario, so a game more inspired by it rather than the NES Mario games is great. I want to see two different types of multiplayer in this: NSMBW style co-op play and traditional take-turn co-op. That would be rad.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 37: We All Scream for E3
« on: May 31, 2012, 07:23:36 PM »

It's all E3 up in this week's episode of Connectivity.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/30362

Note: We didn't want our E3 predictions to come out right before E3, so enjoy this new episode of Connectivitiy a few days early!

(The lights dim in the tightly packed theater. The crowd cheers emphatically as the Connectivity logo appears on the screen at center stage. Loud techno and dubstep tracks test the fortitude of the theater speakers while some of Connectivity's greatest moments play out on the screen. After a few minutes, the sizzle reel ends and the lights come up. The speakers crack as the announcer's voice bellows "and now, please welcome to the stage, Director of Nintendo World Report and host of Connectivity, Neal "Baby Face" Ronaghan!")

Thank you, it is a pleasure to be here. It's been a great year for Connectivity, and we are excited today to talk about the future. To talk about things to come. But first, we must talk about the past, for everything has one. Even the future. I'd like to welcome to the stage Zach "Long, Latin Name for a Dinosaur" Miller and Andy "Where the Hell is Pikmin 3?" Goergen. Now, let's talk about the past. Specifically, E3 2002. (Lights dim again)

(Later...)

Now, the moment you've been waiting for. Our predictions and forecasts for E3 2012. How much time will Nintendo devote to Wii U and to the 3DS? Which third parties will come out in strong support of the Wii U? What surprises might still lurk in the shroud? Well, we have some ideas. Let's welcome Scott "I'm Not Going to Make Up My Own Nickname" Thompson to the stage for our E3 2012 segment.

(Later...)

That does it for this year's E3 prediction conference, er, episode. Thanks for joining us today. By time we record another proper episode, E3 will be over, but if you'd like, click here to send in your predictions. Maybe we'll revisit them and see just how wrong we all were. Stay tuned next week, as we should have a few podcasts going up throughout E3 with our reactions to the news and reveals.

Oh, and go buy a Connectivity shirt. That would be awesome.

You guys are making me proud to have bought that shirt!

You should take a picture of yourself wearing the shirt and send it to us. We'll give you something, I'm sure.

Wow, Pedro didn't win!?! Well done to Zach.

My only disappointment with the episode is that I was very briefly led to believe there'd be a Community discussion after the main show. I guess I was streets behind on that one. :(

The plan was to record a Community segment, but it sort of fell through. I'd expect something on the next couple of weeks.

I'm glad everyone liked the episode. It was a real fun one.

In which we actually talk about Connectivity!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/30317

We've made it. A bit later than usual (please accept our apologies) but Connectivity is here once again to fill your ears with lovely little bits of audio, hand crafted in our artisanal podcast studio. This week we have a few wonder little segments for your listening enjoyment. First off, Neal, Scott, Zach, and myself tackle some listener mail including the topic of the show's namesake: the GameCube Connectivity fad.

After that, Carmine interviews independent game developer Jason Rohrer about his upcoming title, Diamond Trust of London.

And finally, we close out the show with a good old fashioned round of Connectivity Jeopardy, which includes some trivia of E3s past, as well as a time capsule of classic Planet GameCube Trivia Night questions from 2002!

Now that our mailbag is running on empty, why not help us out by submitting your questions here. Please also rate and review us on iTunes.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 35: Winner's Circle
« on: May 20, 2012, 10:00:11 AM »
In the first segment I can only hear the teamGAF guys, the rest seems garbled.

As you can tell by the quality of it, that segment is recorded differently than normal. We essentially recorded the actual Skype call, and what it did was record Neal (and maybe Patrick?) to the left channel and the IcarusGAF guys to the right channel. If you are having trouble hearing one or the other, it would mean one of the speakers in your headphones is going out.

you guys didn't beat the ending with max forces, if you do, and pick one of the non-synth ending, it shows shep on the bottom of a that shaft and she starts breathing.

Yeah, I've seen that ending. I think, when all is said and done, Shep will either have lived or died in the DLC and future installments. It won't account for both endings. In a way, I think that extra snippet with Shep moving is a hint that he will have survived no matter what ending you get. We'll see! I understand that the lack of meaningful choice in the end and the holes in the closing cinematic might be frustrating, but it doesn't tarnish what was otherwise an incredible series.

Digital download hesitation and Wii U hype.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/30119

Hello, please have a seat. A pleasure to see you all once again! Welcome to episode 34 of Connectivity. This week's show is svelte, featuring two segments.

First up, Scott, Mike, Andy and Zach talk about weird endings to old 90's sitcoms about dinosaurs... then they read listener mail! So, something for everyone. The gang tackles issues of digital download trepidation and how Smash Brothers can learn a thing or two from the old WCW wrestling games on the N64. First thing: the ability to make characters' faces bleed.

After that, Carmine and Pedro join Scott and Zach to talk about Wii U hype, or lack thereof. The guys also talk about the system that had them freaking out in the past. How stoked are you, fair listener, for the Wii U? Let us know!

Be sure to check out our twice-a-week News Digest show, in which we break the down the past few days' news in a timely manner. Hooray relevance! As always, you can click here to send us listener mail. We'll read it, I swear (probably) (well, maybe). Until next week....

Econom-tits!

Could you guys please go back to reportin news and commenting on it?

To add to Neal's point, think of the News Digest segment, which airs twice a week at about fifteen minutes each, as the news segment removed and posted early. If you combine those with the regular show here, you have one complete, juicy podcast! But now the news can be discussed right when it is relevant!

TalkBack / Re: Xenoblade's Graphics: Why HD Does Not Matter
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:52:41 PM »
Speaking as someone whose attention has never been fully captured by any current-generation RPG, I find Xenoblade's blue collar, function-over-flamboyance approach (read: limitation) immediately calming and oddly nostalgic. Sure, there are no bells and whistles, no moments where your mouth will be left agape at the visual splendor your electronic box is producing before your eyes, but damn all if the soundtrack and sheer fun of playing don't make up for those voids.

There are not many games that I will devote hours in the triple digits to any longer; I will gladly play Xenoblade to completion.

The connectables talk about things in a timely manner, and then get all gooey over A Boy and his Blob.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/29997

Welcome one and all to episode thirty two of Connectivity. There's so much news, that we once again had two news segments, due to some late breaking news on the future of Nintendo's distribution channels. How exciting!

After that, the gang settles in for a discussion on the last Game Club game, A Boy and His Blob. Hugs for everyone. Finally, we talk about those games you play when you're feeling down, also known as "comfort games".

Please send us mail, we love it so much. You can send it by clicking here. Also, if you've got the time, we'd appreciate a nice, glowing review on iTunes.

TalkBack / Re: Rayman Legends Features Wii U-Exclusive Features
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:57:50 PM »
Though, what's with the naming?   To be honest, Rayman Origins vs. Rayman Legends?  I don't think I'm the only one who will make that mistake.  I don't think of it as "Rayman Origins" - I just think of it as "that Rayman game that looks crappy on the Wii."

But then again,  this is the console which is just adding a freakin' single letter at the end of its name and assuming that everyone, joe schmoe included, will know the difference right off the bat.

I don't know... it's hard to call a game "Origins 2." I mean... what, it's a continuation of an origin story? At some point the origin has to end. I'm cool with Legends. It's not as weird as going from Demon's Souls to Dark Souls, anyway.

Well, the original is coming out on 3DS. This is the sequel. Honestly, get both (assuming the 3DS version is a faithful port. Jury is still out on that.).

Ubisoft's website also has the game listed, though somewhat nebulously so, as Spring 2012. Until I hear otherwise, I believe the game is still coming on March 20th. We'll see if that moves at all. I will say, however, that the fact that several people are searching high and low for concrete information about this game with very little to be found suggests that Ubisoft might not be so hot on this port.

TalkBack / Rayman Origins Preview
« on: March 04, 2012, 05:28:05 PM »

Last year's platformer beauty finally comes to 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/29441

I’ve spoken at length about Rayman Origins in the past, but to paraphrase my feelings about the game: it’s awesome. Bright and detailed levels that look incredible in HD (and still sharp on the Wii), an impeccable soundtrack, and perfect co-op multiplayer pushed Origins to the top of my list of favorite games from 2011. So, naturally, the announcement of a 3DS port had me all kinds of excited.

Released late last year, Origins felt like New Super Mario Bros. Wii without the constraint of accessibility that comes with making a mainstream Mario game. Where NSMBW eased players in gradually and left the greater challenges relegated to the unlockable secret worlds, Origins ramps up the difficulty almost immediately. Perfect button presses and trained platforming skills are, if not already possessed by the player, expected to be learned quickly. Fortunately, there are no lives to punish the player for failing an arbitrary amount of times and checkpoints generally drop you right where you died, so you are free to fail as often and quickly as it takes before you land the perfect jump. How kind.

Having the game on the go should complement the rapid try-die-retry-succeed gameplay. There were times, playing the console version, where I would jump in just to play a level or two before needing to head to work. Having the game in your pocket at all times should be great for perfecting your Rayman skills at your convenience. However, whether due to technical limitations or lack of interest, the fantastic four-player co-op has been dropped completely from the handheld version.

This omission is troubling for me, as I thought the console game was best when played with a friend. Challenges were made easier with concerted teamwork, and the experience was rewarding. Hell, slapping your friends and running away idiotically during loading screens was worth the price of admission alone. Hopefully the pick-up-and-play nature of having the game on your 3DS can balance out the loss of sitting on the couch with some friends.

I’m also interested to see how the 3D effect plays with the vivid and layered backdrops the game runs you through. Much like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Origins features lush environments and heavily detailed fore, mid, and backgrounds. The 3D should create an impressive depth that accentuates the hand-drawn style artwork.

Fortunately, I don’t have to speculate for long; Rayman Origins releases in America on March 20 and in Europe on March 16 (Note: There are a few reports saying that the game has been mysteriously delayed. We're currently waiting for word from Ubisoft to see what is up.). You can find our review for the slap-happy 3DS port soon. In the meantime, feel free to check out the review for the Wii version.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 23: Kinnectivity
« on: February 25, 2012, 04:48:09 PM »

Things get a little bizzaro on this week's episode of Connectivity.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/29393

It's another episode of Connectivity, what else did you expect? We're coming at you with three segments this week. First off, there's the regular news discussion which is loaded thanks to the recent Nintendo Direct presentation. Then, we have a wonderful discussion of the Tales Of games between Patrick and James Dawson. If you stick around after the regular show, you'll be treated to the bizzaro "Kinnectivity" podcast in which we talk about Microsoft's fancy all-seeing eye.

We love getting all of this great feedback, so keep it coming by leaving a comment below, or by emailing us by clicking here.

A side note: there was a glitch in editing this week's episode and for some reason I could not get the AAC version to export properly. I had to convert the MP3 version back to AAC, and as a result the AAC version doesn't have chapters this week. Sorry :(

Yeah, that mic issue is on us. Not to make excuses or the pull the curtain back too much, but Neal sounded fine live, though for whatever reason his audio track was sorta borked, which we didn't realize until the next day. It came down to scrapping the episode or just posting as is, warts and all.

It seems like a lot of games are being delayed, but this episode of Connectivity is right on time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/29295

Is it time for another one of these things already? You guys sure are lucky that I have a mental disorder that causes editing podcasts to be fun for me, otherwise we'd all be in a lot of trouble.

Anyway, this week we've got three segments for you. First off, there's a news panel with so many people on it that I honestly lost count. There's also some discussion of the new 3DS game, Sakura Samurai: The Art of the Sword. Finally, there's the ever classic discussion of used games.

I hope you have something to say to us, because I really want to hear it. Drop your comments below, or send us an email by clicking here. I'm starting to feel like Kentucky Tim is our only fan.
