General Gaming / RE:Piracy
« on: August 04, 2003, 08:57:00 PM »
my numbers for piracy last year come straight from Nintendo's mouth.
i didn't save the site where i found it, and it took alot of searching.
if i come up on it again, i'll provide the site.

the industry won't go in a depression from money that's not made,
only if they go in debt will it =depression.

okay so the videogame industry made $9.4 billion last year.
$3 billion in piracy.  That means the videogame industry lost
32% of it's total revenue to piracy.  Ok it's really not a problem.....

note my sarcasm?

Nintendo Gaming / Price Cuts or Game Deals coming this fall
« on: August 04, 2003, 07:55:21 PM »
please read the whole article if you are going to respond.
FORBES

basically, some of the largest publishers in the country see price cuts and/or game deals for consoles this fall.  financial analysts that follow the industry believe a price cut in September to $149 for the Xbox/PS2 and $99 for Game Cube price is increasingly likely.  They use console sales data since May to the end of July as their main basis for this.  As we all know the tiny $20 price cut in May for PS2/XBOX happened as well.

I for one believe that if a price cut does come, it will happen later in the fall.  Most likely around November.
I also don't think each console will be cut a whole $50, and rather more like a $25 cut.
Which would make the consoles $155 PS2/XBOX, $125 GC.  What do you guys think?

Please read the full article before responding.

piracy is bad because it destroys profit for games and game development.  if say Square released Final Fantasy 12 and somehow it became pirated and noone bought the game because they could get it free, then Square could easily lose well over 100 million dollars, on 1 game!

cost to develop FF 12= 40 million dollars. (probably costs more)
(FF 7 released in 1997, which means it was developed all the way back in 1995-1997 and it cost $40 million to make)
cost to develop and ship out 3 million copies= 90 million (that's if it cost 30 bucks a game to develop and ship out, it probably cost more, i dont think companies make 20 profit on every game)

40 million + 90 million= 130 million dollars lost - 3 million (if 100,000 copies of FF12 sold before the pirated version came out)= 127 million dollars lost

(and that's to say if someone pirated the game early, if the pirated version came out later then they will have sold some more of those games yes, but they would lose even more money on all the additional copies shipped that didn't sell)

now do you understand why it's bad?  sure that's a worse case scenario but still Nintendo estimated that it lost around $650 million in sales last year because of piracy, and the entire industry might have lost over $3 billion.

do you realize that with 650 million more dollars how many more employees, development teams, and games Nintendo could have made?  Which in turn would've created even more profit for them?
in your personal case, this could've resulted in you getting Mario Kart DD a year earlier because they could've had twice as many people working on it...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Miyamoto and Mikami interview
« on: August 04, 2003, 05:38:24 PM »
ofcourse not the next one, the WW sequel is already in development.
that doesn't mean there couldn't be an adult link game after that one on GC.
even if they started right now on adult link game, theres no way it would come out before the WW sequel.

"And acutually, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami at Capcom came to us and said he wanted to work on Nintendo titles. Sonic creator Yuki Naka has done the same."

F-Zero, from impressions this game will be one of the top 5 so far in the entire GC lineup thus far-Sega
Starfox gameplay already indicates it will be top notch-Namco

now we have those two legendary developers come to Nintendo themselves and want to work with Nintendo to make games.  They could be sequels yes, but they could also be new franchises because almost all of Nintendo's franchises already have sequels due to release between now and mid 2004 or are currently in development for an even later release.
New franchise+legendary developer+Nintendo collaboration= Megaton!

they have random consoles like that, because they have not sold out their stock of them yet.
(you won't see Saturns there, unless it's rereleased, and that ain't gonna happen, unless Majesco......)
next time you see the Game Gears check to see if Majesco is anywhere on the cases.

Majesco bought the rights from Sega to rerelease the Game Gear a couple years after it had
died out.  They rereleased it for $29.99, so it's probably even cheaper now.  Rumor has it though, that
the Majesco version doesn't work with the TV Tuner.  But then, how many people actually own a TV Tuner? LOL, I did.... (not anymore, sold it for 75 bucks credit years ago)

no thanks i don't want a sequel to a crappy nes game.

from what I've heard red dead revolver is done, and they're looking for a publisher...mainly rockstar to publish it.  it's not on capcom's financial report for this year so it doesn't look like they're going to release it.

and why would Mikami goto work WITH Nintendo and create the same game he has already made and worked on for the last 2 years?

another problem would be if the older style zelda killed the WW sequel in sales.
some people would claim "look they beat miyamato at his own franchise!", especially fanboys of sony/microsoft

another problem would be if tetra trackers and four swords sold poorly because
there are two much better looking and more advanced zeldas out, in addition to WW itself.

now if Mikami and Nintendo put their creativity together and created a brand new franchise it could be huge!  Everyone wants a new franchise from Nintendo that rivals Zelda, Metroid, and Mario- I believe they could do it.

Then, if this franchise does well, just imagine a sequel to it ready for N5's launch!

or if Mikami and Nintendo can't collabrate right away because they're both already busy making games,
imagine if they made the adult zelda game people want and release it as a launch game on N5,
that would be so huge.

although it may get boring fast for a veteran game player,
for a first time player like your brother this game would be perfect, he wouldn't get bored with it because it's all brand new to him.

alot of kids won't shell out the money for a system other than their ps2, until the GC's price is very low.
sure, with all the great games we will get ps2 owners buying gc's this year, but it won't be
huge numbers.

i agree, i want something new

and i don't think they're going to make another zelda, other than the windwaker graphic's engine sequel currently under development.

plus we have tetras trackers and four swords coming to GC, do we really need 4 more zeldas on GC?
i think 3 more is enough

"Tactics is everything a fantasy strategy-RPG should be and more." - EGM

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What does Shig have planned for his GTA style game?
« on: August 04, 2003, 12:16:58 PM »
actually i see the new Starfox employing such open-ended gameplay, maybe that's why it looks so early.
maybe they scraped their original idea after seeing the success of GTA.

I mean in the Starfox level I saw from E3, they were in a city like GTA.  You could jump in a starwing fly around and shoot with it (like driving in GTA and running people over), you could go out on the wing of the starwing and shoot (like driveby's in GTA), you could land the plane and get out and run on foot and shoot (like GTA), and you could also get in tanks (like GTA).
But really the key similarity is the open-ended gameplay of doing whatever you want.

EDIT: i also add that Starfox takes elements of Halo, where you can fight on foot or jump into a vehicle.

i agree greyninja, add the 360 controls too for the naysayers, but include the old controls as the default.
on that note, I'm gonna check out some video clips of RE4 and see what the controls look to be.

It's bad enough that developers have to make 3D epics for the home consoles, but imagine having to do full ports for the bloody handheld!
Even though it's said to be as good as the N64 or Dreamcast, I still bet that having full 3D games on handhelds will only be possible thru some sort of hologram device that  projects images as big as a 32cm TV (or like that new technology that was mentioned somewhere before).
It's cool and all that all the technology can be squeezed into a small(?) case, but the 3D graphics will be a problem. I don't doubt the developer power, nor the console's power. Only the games themselves.
With that new technology thing (forgot where it was), Nintendo should use that.

actually GBA has some full 3d games, so why do we need holograms for a game to be 3d?
Don't you think that sony has done technical demos to simulate a 3d game working on a 4.5 inch size lcd screen, using PSP specs to run it?  They would not be creating the PSP with 3d games in mind, without running tests on how games will perform using such technology.
You guys who despise the PSP, just seem to come up with a new reason why it won't work once your other reason can't fully prove it won't work.

General Gaming / Piracy
« on: August 04, 2003, 11:47:44 AM »
since the xenosaga 2 thread was closed, with no directly stated reasoning I take it, it was from what started between someone bashing another person and the other telling him never to speak to him, not from our piracy discussion and so here's my response KDR's last post:

KDR states: "You know the IDSA is most likely a group of suit terrorists that would like you to not know/give up your rights for their profit?"
- ok, this is just absurd, likening them to terrorists in suits.

KDR states: "Example: You bought a GC game which came without manual (let's say, used.). Now, the disk contains no info about any licenses, neither does the packaging. That means, you are not aware that there are any contracts involved and probably even own the copy. In case of Metroid Prime (didn't check the other ones) even the manual says nothing about licenses..."
-in the Metroid Prime manual it states: All Rights, including the copyrights of game, scenario, music, and program, reserved by Nintendo.  it also states: This Nintendo game is not designed for use with any unauthorized copying device or any unlicensed accessory.
(it doesn't matter if you buy it used with no manual, and you don't know about the laws, THEY STILL APPLY) from what you're saying it's like if i didn't know that a stop sign meant to stop then it doesn't apply to me.

KDR states: That licensed for PS2 probably means they acquired a license from Sony to use the PS2 platform, just as you see "Licensed by Nintendo" on GBA games.
- wrong, sony has that message on first party games..............

KDR states: Either way, as long as you didn't know you're commiting a crime, the courts will probably let you go free.
- NO CHANCE, this never applies to any law.  If you commit a crime, without knowing it's against the law, you're still charged for the crime.  no if, ands, or buts.  Bar none.

Finally, the most important point i stated earlier in greyninjas case.  A form of piracy doesn't always have to go against the current laws in place.  Just because it is not "illegal" does not mean it's not piracy.
and finally again: Nintendo spokeswoman Beth Llewelyn had this to say about N64 emulators:
"It promotes continued piracy."
