what do James and Greg think?

Oh, talking about James, wouldn't the controller be wicked for JRPG's?  Potions, spells, summons mapped to the touchscreen?

Mortal Kombat 3DS (An upgraded port of the new game ala SSFIV)

Actually, this is seeming pretty likely, with Blazblue and DOA  and SSF4 already on the 3DS, looks like fighting games may be to the 3DS what JRPG's were to the DS.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the circle pad.   With the flat plane of movement (rather than the concave plane of movement of Dual Shock/360/Classic analog sticks), it seems to mimic fighting game joysticks almost perfectly.  Been able to consistently pull off quarter, half, and even full circle special moves in SSF4, and I usually suck at fighting games.

an ecosystem that allows even more garbage onto their platform than what currently is possible (anybody getting into the phone business today and does not follow Apple's App store model is dead in the water).

I don't know just how important the app store is.  I'm sure it makes Apple a lot of money, and helps convince techies and gamers to buy Iphones, but techies and gamers are an awfully tiny portion of U.S. consumers.   Does the average person buy an Iphone because they want to play Angry Birds on the go, or do they buy one because Iphones are status symbols, make you look successful or important, and "hey you can download an app, well I guess I'll try that it's just 99 cents."

Case in point, via opposites:  I've been carrying around my 3DS all the time not just to play games, but also to take 3D pictures, which as a parent of 2 girls I tend to do a lot.  I was on a field trip last week with my oldest daughter, and one of the other parents, the only dad who's as young as me (32), says "Hey, I didn't know you could buy a DS with a camera now.  That's pretty cool."  Oh yes.  This guy knows what a DS is, but not a DSi.

Another horrifying story:  I'm taking pictures of my daughter at her preschool's easter egg hunt today, and a bunch of the other parents are curious about this funny looking camera I've got.  So I explain that it's 3D without glasses, show them a bunch of photos I took in 3D, show them how to watch with the sweet spot, etc..  They are amazed.  Then one of the parents, some doctor, says "OH, that's a game, isn't it?"  Pointing at my 3DS.  In a very, very disappointed, disapproving tone of voice.

So, to sum up?  If I had a Nintendo phone, other adults would point at me and say "ooh, he likes games."  If I had an Iphone, they'd say "Wow, you must be important or rich.  Or both."

Please, please don't make phones Nintendo.

Have to agree with Zach here...there's no way that Nintendo would get back into the hardware race, and no reason they should.  I doubt that the kinds of gamers who are hardcore PS3 or 360 users would have any interest in owning a Nintendo console, and that market's too small for Nintendo to want to give up other markets for.

I think Metts is right about being excited about the controller.  If the rumors are true, I'm thinking Nintendo might be able to make party games or casual games centered around the idea of individual screens.  For the rest of us...I'm guessing this would be used in the same way the the 3DS uses/will use its touchscreen?  Button mapping, inventory in Zelda, etc..

If the rumors are true.

In an obtuse and overreaching way of thinking, I kind of saw this game as an innovative little experiment in side-scrolling bullet hell shooters, i.e. Ikaruga or (as more people might be familiar with) R-Type.  A lot of the same game mechanics are there:  avoiding obstacles with strategic movement or strategic shooting, moving your ship in between projectiles, boss battles at the end of levels, etc..  And yet it's hard to call these "bullet hell" because the pace is very slow and deliberate.  There aren't screen filling waves of projectiles to dodge--  there are maybe 4 or 5 on the screen at any given time.  But because movement is slow in response, 4 or 5 projectiles represent a significant challenge.   As a result, there's a lot of strategy that goes into movement....because you can't make instant, immediate changes in course or speed (like real subs and ships, of course) you have to plan your movement in advance, and at the higher difficulties you have to plan the possibilities of changes ("I'll move forward at full speed, but I'll move down if a projectile appears from the top of the screen, reduce speed if it appears from the left, ....)

There is literally no game like this, and to be honest, there has never been a game like this before.   Everyone complains about Nintendo never making anything new.  Well, this is clearly new.  Luckily, it's also really fun.  And even though they're only somewhat similar, I would say fans of bullet-hell shooters would most likely enjoy this game, though that comparison is somewhat like saying fans of video games would most likely enjoy watching Battlestar Galactica on TV.

Oh, and in my mind this game is the most beautiful game on the 3DS, though it's a shame that when people see screenshots they'll fail to understand this.  It's only when you see this on 3D, with the "aquarium" effect going on, that this game really impresses.

It makes me think back to the Dreamcast. The memory cards (VMUs) slid into the controllers and doubled as a secondary screen. It was monochrome and usually didn't actually provide much in the way of functionality, but the idea was awesome.

I really, really just want a normal controller though. So many games have suffered on the Wii because of the shoe-horned motion controls. I don't mind that the option is there, but it shouldn't be used where it doesn't really make sense either.

If you think about it though, with the exception of Gameboy and GBA, Nintendo control schemes have just been crazy.  Some may call it "Innovative," "Groundbreaking" or "Inspired,"  and some might just call it just plain crazy.

Look at the NES controller.  Young people on these forums might not remember that a lot of people thought that this controller was idiotic and stupid.  Movement controlled by the left hand?  No Joystick?  2 buttons?  Crazy!  The dominant control scheme at the time was either the 2600 or the 5200 controller, which was a joystick typically controlled by the right hand (though not necessarily) and one or two buttons.

Then the SNES.  Shoulder buttons.  This was crazy.  How would you use these?  Wouldn't it make more sense have all buttons on the face, like every single previous generation's controller, as well as the Genesis?  SF2, man, everyone complained about having HK and HP mapped to the shoulders.

The N64.  The trident.  An analog stick, thumb driven?  Crazy.

The Gamecube controller.   That was just weird.

DS?  Dual screen?  Why in the world would you use Dual Screens?

Motion controls on the Wii?  Wow, that'll never catch on.  MS and Sony, they'll never jump on that bandwagon.

And now we have the 3DS.  People don't want 3D, they say.  It's a gimmick.

And now we have this crazy Wii 2/ Project Cafe controller, which to be honest, I cannot understand.  It's crazy.  I can't even imagine how in the world this would work in gameplay.

I think that if Nintendo had introduced a conventional Dual-Shock-y controller, everyone on internet would simultaneously lose their sh*t.    Conventional is just not the Nintendo way, as much as people complain about what Ninty does with their IP's.    People say that they want to skip Nintendo's next console because they can't quite understand what it'll bring to the table in terms of gameplay.  I say, if it was something I could easily understand, then I would have been profoundly disappointed with Nintendo.

Yeah, I have to second that, and I didn't get a PS2 until a few years ago.  Just in terms of quantity and quality of console libraries, the PS2 is a close rival to the SNES (at least in terms of my tastes, which are RPGs and adventure games).

Oh yes, the JRPG selection on PS2 was crazy big.  But my problem with PS2 JRPG's was that everyone seemed to be following the formula set out by FFVII of lots of exposition, crazy long 20 minute cutscenes, super long battle animations.  As if a JRPG has to be over 40 hours long, or it wasn't a JRPG at all.  FFX was okay I guess, graphically at the very least, but then there were all these crappy ones, truly crappy ones like Star Ocean:  Till the End of Time, whose ending will make you want to take a baseball bat to the game disc, your PS2, and your brain, in that order.  I won't spoil it, but suffice it to say, it's like the game is laughing at you and saying "You just spent 50 hours and I'm pissing on that commitment you made."  And Grandia 3, which took a good game and a great combat system from Grandia 2  and just took a crap on it.

Don't get me wrong:  I love JRPG's.  But the DS's selection is much better.  (Okay, technically not a console, I am not overlooking that point).   FF3, FF4 remakes, all those Dragonquests, Shin Megami Tensei, World ends with you, Lufia, Etrian, like just crazy JRPG's that just never, ever came out in the US before, at least, not on the same console, it literally made importing useless.   And you can just put it in sleep whenever, and no 20 minute cutscenes!

ICO? Shadow of Colossus? God of War (I & 2)? Any sports games? Time Splitters? Okami? GTA?

PS2 was the ****. But so was the Xbox. Every system had a game I wanted. Luckily my friends and I had different tastes so I got to play them all.

You notice I didn't name those games :-)

Okami and Time Splitters, though?  I tried both, and they didn't quite stick.  Especially Time Splitters.  I went in really wanting to like it because I'd heard so many good things about it, but the game just felt like a late 90's era FPS.    And as for GTA, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, especially on these forums, who don't like sandbox games.  I see why people like sandbox games, but I like a more directed experience in my gaming, which is probably why I like Nintendo games as much as I do.  And let's face it, the PS2 didn't get any good sports games, AT ALL, until the Dreamcast died and 2K started putting out games on the PS2.  EA Sports is mediocre at everything except a few of their FIFA games.

I knew that I missed Nintendo systems when I went totally apesh*t over Katamari Damacy, thinking "Oh, this is so unique, what an amazing game, it's so inventive, etc..."  I freakin' loved that game at the time, though, in hindsight, it was basically downloadable game quality, being that it had only 1 game mechanic and it just used it the exact same way over and over and over again.  But it was the game that made me realize "I really, really miss gameplay-focused games.  I really, really miss colorful, vibrant graphics.  I am so over being a graphics-whore."

Which brings me back to my point.  I want my next Nintendo console to be a Nintendo console, and not another PS360 hardcore console.

Except that they didn't upscale the graphics in Mario Advance.  They just ported it.

BTW, anyone else noticed that this is coming out exactly 1 week before RE Mercenaries, Cave Story 3D, and Devil Survivor 3D?  Man, the 3rd parties must be pissed.  These are all games that I HAD planned to buy at launch, but now....

I'm also nervous about Nintendo going all hardcore...I know that the term "hardcore" seems to always be in flux, but I always think of  homophobic slur slinging MW2 playing 14-year olds when I think of "hardcore gamers."

I decided to go "hardcore" after a owning an N64 (aka the system that had only 10 games on it) so I skipped GC and went PS2.  Big mistake.  I should've at least splurged for both, or just stuck with Nintendo.  I missed out on the Prime games, RE4 with beautiful graphics, Smash Bros, Sunshine, WindWaker, the list goes on.  What did I get from the PS2?  Onimusha 3: Demon Seige?  Metal Gear Solid 2?  Killzone?  FFX?  FF X-2?  FF12?  Burnout 3?  Burnout Dominator?  Need for Speed anything?  Ratchet and Clank anything?  Jakk and Daxter?  All these really mediocre, forgettable, or even bad games.  I think I can count the games that I really really cherished on the PS2 on literally 1 hand, and still none of them come nearly as close to the great Nintendo games I've played on the Wii this generation.

786
You know, I remember a little game...what was that called?  Oh, yeah, Wind Waker, and when that introduced cell-shaded graphics, the most minor of departures, there was a sh*t storm.  Seriously.

I think in a way, we want safe sequels.  We don't want change.  Or rather, Nintendo did change (motion, casual) and lots of people didn't like it. I think those people just wanted a Gamecube 2 instead of a Wii.  If that had happened, oh boy....there would literally not be a Nintendo anymore.

If anything, I'm an older gamer (32).  I'm married, have 2 kids, and my first was born the year the Wii came out.  I think if not for the Wii, I would not be gaming anymore.  I wouldn't want to play PS3 or 360 with my daughter or my wife.  And I don't play online, because you need a whole lot of free time to really enjoy online play, which I don't have.  And I tend to like the games I grew up with, which is why I love the 2D platformers.  And I don't have the patience to sit through 30 minutes of tutorial missions in order to start having fun with a game, because chances are, I only have 30 minutes to game on a particular night anyway.

Oh, and I would never have been able to justify spending $300 on a console that only I would play.  But $200 on something for the family?

From Nintendo:

New Handheld Zelda (a la Spirit Tracks) without stylus controls
Ice Climbers 3D (Oh yes, this would be so awesome.  Not a port, but a new game)
Mario and Luigi 3D

From 3rd Parties:

Dragon Quest 3D
Castlevania 3D
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX 3D Up-res remakes!
Elite Beat Agents 3D (With licensed songs, can I dream?)
Sin and Punishment 3D (new game OR a high-res, high-poly remake of the 1st game!)

Okay, it's something that everyone in the room is thinking, so I'm just going to say it, to clear the air.

Virtual Boy.

There.

No one with half a brain is seriously thinking that.  The Virtual Boy had a pathetic start while the 3DS has broken several sales records.  Come Christmas time, I'd place money on there being, at least in some areas, supply issues on the 3DS.

In case my poor writing skills got in the way of getting my intentions across, neither was I.  :-)    I was just trying to be funny.

I have to admit, though, I love my 3DS so far, Crackwings--- er, I mean, Pilotwings Resort is responsible for a fine layer of dust settling over my Wii, and my DSi XL.  And my DS Lite.  And my Iphone.  And my gaming PC rig with an overclocked 5850 which alone cost me more money than my 3DS, and I am kicking myself for that let me tell you.  Everytime I start up my computer, Steam pops up and whines "Hey, you haven't touched Black ops for 3 months.  Don't you even care?  You paid money for this, you know."  And Starcraft II, don't even get me started on how much I've ignored that game.  I'Ve barely put 3 or 4 hours into that game.  And I'm Korean!

I am, however, a tiny bit afraid and would be greatly comforted by seeing really awesome launch numbers.  I am a Nintendo Fan, admittedly, but I want to see those numbers (really big numbers) not for cheerleading purposes, but to be confident that I'm going to see awesome games on my 3DS for years to come.   Nintendo sells a lot of 3DS's and makes a lot of money, 3rd parties jump aboard with great games, EAD makes lots of even better games, I give them all my disposable income, and everyone walks away happy.    I think I heard that they would release official numbers later this week.

Virtual Boy.

There.

In all seriousness, I hope this is more like the DS Phat's slow start that the Virtual Boy's quick demise.  In one case, the console will pick up in a year or two and I'll get great games month after month.  In the other, I'm going to go out and buy another 3DS, never open it, stuff it in my closet, and sell it for 2 grand in 10 years on ebay.

790
OMG, is it me or is this game really freakin hard?  Like, Mega Man hard.  I too am not a completionist, so normally I wouldn't care, but something about this game, I must get 3 stars on everything mission or I will hate myself forever.  This sucks.  I'm Asian.  I'm usually really good at video games!

I'm on what I believe to be the final class of missions (Platinum?), and this game is just kicking my butt.  I've tried the stupid balloon popping, boat and plane chasing mission about 40 times now, and not only am I unable to get 3 stars, I've only replicated my 2 star rating once.  I've turned off 3D because I keep twisting like a maniac trying to make the turns in the cave.

This is getting too stressful.  I'm going to try to put it down and play something less stressful, like the FF4 remake on DS.  That's right.  I'm thinking that that game is a cakewalk compared to this.

I'm going to appropriate something I hear James Jones say a lot on the RFN podcast.

"**** You, Game."

Aah...FYG, Pilotwings Resort.  FYG!  All that soothing Jazz music is a lie!

Surprised no one has mentioned the HORI accessories, which always tend to be pretty good quality.

I picked up a screen protector, which is very nice, but for me was as complex as brain surgery to attach.

And this hardcase, which fits the 3DS, some earbuds, and 3 games, but can still fit in a jacket pocket.

And this shell, which hasn't arrived yet, because Amazon's stupid.

Yeah.  I read those idiots on IGN write things like "Oh, no one will turn on 3D in face raiders because it's impossible to maintain the 3D effect while turning around."

I turn around, I walk through my apartment, I swing my 3DS in periscope mode at ridiculously high velocities trying to torpedo ships all around me, and I still maintain 3D crystal clear.  It's just crazy how easy this has gotten.

Of course, I still tilt left and right playing Pilotwings, and I lose the 3D easily.  Oh, and I know that tilting my body, or the 3DS, doesn't help me make those tight turns.  I'm just an idiot.  Seriously.  Been doing this since Mario Kart on SNES.  Makes no sense.

Goldeneye!

Honestly, a must buy for any Wii owner.  No one should complain about not having anything to play on Wii until after they get this game.

It's very little like the original, IMO.  More like Splinter Cell Conviction/MGS3 kind of stealthy (i.e. cover based instead of "shoot out lights to stay in the dark" based).  And MW2 production values and set pieces.  Possibly better than MW2 set pieces, especially the fight against Ana Onatop, which is freakin epic.    And great level design (esp. the cradle level).

NWR Feedback / Playpickle.com ads on the site...Play Mario for free?
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:10:19 AM »
I want to preface my rant below by saying a few things.

1.  I know that webhosting and bandwidth for NWR is not only not free, but it is probably quite expensive.

2.  I really hope that the banner ads being served to us when we are looking through the site and forums help pay for that.

3.  It seems that the banner ads are being served automatically, and I'm guessing that no one on staff has the ability to choose which ads get served and which don't.

4.  I am in no way saying that we should get rid of any ads.

With that said, WTF is up with the PlayPickle.com ads being served on this site, which are advertising that if you click through to their site you can play Super Mario Bros for free?  I actually have clicked through out of some morbid curiosity (but I have installed nothing) and I read small-print disclaimers saying that they're going to install random toolbars on your computer and that they have NO PERMISSION from Nintendo to even be offering the game, use Mario in their ads, etc...

I am sure this is illegal.  I don't think that's up for debate.  What I'm wondering is how in the world is Reggie and NOA or NOL coming down these Playpickle guys with a fistful of lawyers?  Even if they're based in China or wherever, there's no way Nintendo can or would leave them to this, is there?

Yeah, I've have to admit that I basically "left" Nintendo after the N64, and instead of the GC I bought a PS2.  The result?  I played a bunch of forgettable games and immediately told myself "Okay, next console must be a Nintendo one."

I've heard a lot of complaints about not having enough games on the Wii to play, and compaints about GC "New Play Control" ports.  To be honest, I love those ports, and they basically make up for not having enough new games.  In case you didn't know, the GC was not popular, and a lot of people (like me) didn't buy it.  Which means we didn't get to play the Prime games, Pikmin, Jungle Beat, Sunshine, Windwaker, etc....and getting to play those in widescreen on the Wii is pretty good.

Now, I have huge stack of Wii games gathering dust because I'm head deep into the 3DS, but that's another story.

But the viewing angle in 3D is poor but workable which means 3D plus moving is a big no-no

You know, that's kinda funny, because before I got my 3DS I'd heard that a lot too, and on the first day I had trouble maintaining the sweet spot while playing AR games and Face Raiders.

But...

After putting about 15+ hours in the 3DS, I noticed that something had changed, in so far that the sweet spot got easier to get and easier to maintain.  I just noticed today that I can play Pilotwings Resort with the slider turned up a little more higher than when I played up to a few days ago.    I also noticed that I can stand up and play periscope mode on Steel Diver without leaving the sweet spot, and without expending much physical or mental effort trying to maintain it.

Also, I noticed that the sweet spot seems higher/taller than it is wider.  Meaning, I can tilt my 3DS up and down quite a bit without losing the sweet spot, but tilting it left or right to the same degree makes me lose it.  I don't know if it was always like that, or if this is also something that has resulted from prolonged use.  Though considering how the parallax tech works, I guess this should not be too surprising, no?

Anyone else notice that the sweet spot effect is getting easier?

Here's a scary thought:

It seems like everyone is getting at least a handful of Mii's in the past--- what, 10 days?-- that the 3DS has been out.  It seems nifty, we get pleasantly surprised when we see that green light.

And there's, what--- maybe 1 million, maybe a bit more-- 3DS's out in the wild right now.

What's it going to be like in a year, or 2, or 3, when the 3DS has sold more than 10 or 20 million units.  It seems cute if we get 1 or 2 streetpasses a day, or every other day, but if that rate stays consistent or rises (as it would, as the population of 3DS's on the street grows and grows)....

Boom!  Mii Plaza overpopulation, folks.  That's right.

You've got 5, or 10, or maybe 20 Mii's in your Mii plaza right now.  What happens when you get (and you eventually will) 100, 200, or even 300 Miis?  Do they all display on one screen?  Do  you have to scroll through these hordes and hordes of Miis?  Does the 3DS erase old Miis?  Or do they just linger around, staring at you, craving your attention?

Okay, so this is half-serious.  But now to be completely serious, does anyone know what will happen as the accumulation of streetpasses and Miis increases?  Is there a limit, or does it just keep going and going?  I know this doesn't seem like an issue now, but this may be, a few years down the line.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: AR games and its untapped potential

Okay, I am totally digging Mario jumping around doing platforming on my desk.  I likey.  But there are some technical issues which someone very smart has to figure out, mainly having to do with environment recognition and the AR cards.

It's probably obvious to a hell of a lot of people just how the AR cards work, at least in a general non-technical sense.  They're a visual marker for the 3DS.  Since the 3DS is programmed with the actual dimensions of the AR cards and knows exactly what they look like, it sees the AR card and can pretty accurately guess how far away the card is, because the 3DS knows exactly how large the darn thing is supposed to appear.

But it gets better.  The way it accurately deforms your tables and makes a hole in it and makes dragons appear is by knowing what the cards look like when staring straight at 'em, so if they're tilted at a certain angle, the 3DS knows what the angle of the desk is that the AR card is sitting on.  So now it can pretty accurately recognize an object in the environment, enough to make Mario stand on top of it believably.  Pretty brilliant.

But to make Mario run and jump?  I think to do this, you would need multiple AR cards.  You would need four (maybe?), 1 for each corner or each side of the desk, depending on how its designed.   But what about objects on the desk, like a book or a box for Mario to jump on top of?  I'm guessing you would need an AR card up on top of that too, to designate that surface.

You can see where this would lead.  You would have AR cards strewn everything to make a sizeable surface for Mario to work with.

Someone smarter, can you think of a more elegant method?

Oh yes, Pilotwings is my favorite so far, I play it far more the SS4 or Steel Diver.  It's incredibly addictive, even for me, and I'm totally not one of those completion or trophy whores ladies of the night.  But I think the fact that if you don't get 3 stars on a mission, you look at the score breakdown and know exactly why (and I mean EXACTLY) you didn't get them, how you can improve, and you can restart the mission instantly, no noticeable load time, and the missions themselves are just 2 or 3 minutes long.  It's really got a vicious (in a good, crack dealer way) cycle of instant gratification and feeling of accomplishment going on.  On some missions, I must have tried them 20 to 30 times, but it never felt like a chore, not for a minute.

Though, is it me, or is Steel Diver absolutely freaking beautiful with the 3D turned on?  Good god, talk about scenery porn.

Hi everyone, I've been reading all sorts of crazy things on the interwebs about the 3DS and people complaining about headaches and nausea...I was wondering what everyone else's experiences have been like?

First, I've been having no issues whatsoever.  Granted, I've got perfect vision, I never get nausea or motion sickness from anything, I can read or play DS in the car, I ride crazy rollercoasters after eating double cheeseburgers, etc..  My experience may not mirror your own.

I must say, though, that the longer I've been playing it, the easier the 3D has been for me.  Now I open up my 3DS and I get perfect sweet spot 3D, automatically, with absolutely zero effort.  I can even look at the touch screen and still see 3D on the top screen with my upper peripheral vision.  I played it standing up, twisting around in periscope mode or face raiders, and I never lose the sweet spot.

I do, however, think this varies from game to game.  I play SSIV and Steel Diver with the 3D cranked all the way up and I get no ghosting at all.  It's awesome, especially Steel Diver, which just looks amazing.

But I think something is a little wrong with Pilotwings Resort.  I get pretty bad ghosting with that game unless I turn the 3D down nearly all the way.  I suspect this might be a developer issue, though, because even with the 3D slider turned nearly off, the 3D looks to have just as much depth as SSIV and Steel Diver.  In fact, turning the 3D slider all the way up on this game just seems to cause ghosting for me, and doesn't seem to add much noticeable depth.  Which is sad, because this game is like crack, it's so addictive.

I also thought the 3D in that OK Go music video was off.  I got lots of ghosting on that, and just like with Pilotwings, I had to turn the 3D slider nearly all the way down.

So that's my 3D experience so far.  Anyone's eyes melt off yet?  Anyone's head explode?
