Zelda winning best handheld is like my daughter's first ice skating competition, where she won 1st place in a bracket of just 3 kids (the under-6's are not very competitive in local ISI).

Maybe we should give Steel Diver an award for best multiplayer submarine combat game of the year??

I went for one of the $50 tiers, cuz I'm old fashioned like that and I covet the physical magazine.  And the free game.

I think this is a very...convenient way of doing things for me.  But I'm wondering...would Kickstarter frown on this whole thing, since it's not really a crowdfunding exercise as much as it is....a subscription drive.

Again, I am a happy "backer."  Not knocking it.  But I'm really more of a "subscriber" am I not?

Can you even name five good Western handheld games in videogame history?

Such Hyperbole!
The Vita has some great Western developed games:

Wipeout 2084
Super Stardust Delta
OMG Z on PSP/Vita and Velocity on PSP/Vita are both great games
Both of Drinkbox studios games are essential in my view
Uncharted is pretty decent
I haven't played Tear Away yet but it's supposed to be good too.
That's 8 not including ports or cross buy games.

Have I just been trolled?

Maybe.  Uh, but dude, no offense, but by the 5th item on your list, you've already gone from "great" to "pretty decent."

But I think Pixelated Pixies perfectly illustrates why there's very little western development on the 3DS.  There are some exceptions, but they are exceptions that pretty much prove the rule.  Wayforward.   Renegade Kid.  These are experienced developers who [#1] Don't make and don't aim to make Flappy Bird money and [#2] are doing things in game development that no other western game developers can do or want to do.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: AC Adapter affect battery usage?
« on: March 09, 2014, 03:05:58 AM »
OH, I should add:  They sell batteries for almost all their handhelds.   From the 2DS to the GBA SP.  All $15 a piece.  The only exception seems to be the Micro, for which they sell absolutely nothing.

Well, to have something to compare to, has anyone's DS Phat or DS Lite batteries died out?  My Lite is still going good, REALLY GOOD, and it's probably gone through at least a thousand charges.

On the other hand, my old Ipod Touch, which has had FAR LESS charges, is on its death knell.   When full charged, it lasts for about 2 hours.

FYI, you can buy replacement batteries from Nintendo directly.  They cost $15 each.   Their online store is stupidly difficult to browse, though.   I know.   Surprise.

999 and VLR had some mind blowing story twists. I hope the sequel gets made some how........

Nintendo could offer to publish/finance the game as a Wii U title since it needs all the games it can get at this point.

As much as I love visual novel games in general, I cannot imagine playing this on my home console, despite the fact that  yes, I know, there are such games for home consoles, esp. PS3.

And a 3rd 999 game would  help Nintendo sell Wii U's as much as Bayonetta 2 will.   As in, not really.

Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure!

Hell yeah.   Everything Khush said.   The music, the characters, the insane "I can outdo Layton" story.   Loved the soccer minigame.

And yeah, I will also agree with everyone's sentiments about Uprising.  Definitely ragged on way more than it deserves.   After chapter....oh, 12, maybe, the game really starts firing on all cylinders.

But I will add that another game deserving of a sequel is Crimson Shroud.   So good.   I've been thinking about it again since I heard the Matsuno episode of Retronauts last week (great episode, btw).

Just to be clear, if you have already bought and registered a 3DS system, then you can't get anything.

If you already bought and registered one of the games on the list, you can't get anything.

Yes, I know.  It makes me mad too.

Isn't Mario Kart 8 the only "big" game coming out this spring?   What else is there?   Are they already bringing out Kirby 3DX?   That doesn't seem likely.

It's funny how a lot of people , especially self professed "i'm not really into jrpg's" kind of people, are turned off by the job system.   I admit, I am REALLY into jrpg's, and i have no problem with job systems, but no one complained about the job system in 4 heroes if light, and that was the same developer.   And everyone gushed over fire emblem last year and that was most definitely a job system.

Uh...wow.  "has been compared to Atlus's Persona series."

To my eyes, that basically IS Persona.   If you told me that was a trailer for "Persona 6:  Sci Fi Edition" I would have been like "Yup.  Okay."

I would add that I am not a fan of Persona, and it's basically the only big Atlus game that I've never been able to get into.  And yes, it's because of the dating stuff.

Yeah, this reminds me of right before that final fight with Ghrirahim, when you're descending down the pit against hordes of those goblin guys.   That was a lot of fun...for the 4 minutes that it lasted.   More than 4 minutes...now I'm not sure.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Optimism
« on: December 11, 2013, 02:24:47 AM »
Miiverse is probably one of the most innovative concepts of this generation. Nintendo Games are still pretty good which is saying a lot.

I have to heartily agree.  Miiverse is the ONLY online discussion forum that I'm comfortable letting my 7 year old read (Sorry NWR forums).   I think if Nintendo pushed it, along with the fun of drawing , parents can really embrace it.  And, as a human being, I find the the one of the least offensive forums out there.   A place on the internet without name calling and flame wars?  Who knew?

But another hurdle that Nintendo would have to overcome is the fact that most parents (sorry for the sprinkling of pessimism here) simply don't give a crap what their kid is doing and definitely won't take the time to really participate in their child's consumption of media.  I mean, I do.   I know what fairy books my daughter is reading, and the difference between the fashion fairy and the birthday fairy.   I will watch and discuss the new My Little Pony animated movie with her (the one where the ponies turn into teenage girls).   And I when I see her grandfather stick freakin' Candy Crush in front of her, I will rush in with my DSi and saying, "Hey honey, check out this pre-installed version of Brain Age Math Express" because I don't want her to rot her brain with that freemium crap.

It's a matter of education and branding.   Nintendo should, and I think very well can, teach parents that there is more quality to there games and more value to their products than PS4 and XBox One.   Not that Nintendo is the Fisher-Price of gaming-- rather, that Nintendo is like the Whole Foods of gaming.  Because we all know that if there is any distinguishing feature of Nintendo games, it's that they have a ingenius emphasis on fun and play that other games sacrifice in order to emphasize cinematic grandeur and violent spectacle.  Which has always been tough for Nintendo, because cinematic grandeur and violent spectacle is really, really attractive.

It's a tough sell, sure.   It's marketing that targets the highest denominator.   It's marketing that aims not for what's easy to do, but to inspire consumers to do what's hard by convincing them that hard is worthwhile.   But organic foods have done it, for the most part.   And tough is still shy of impossible.

I wasn't able to get into the eshop until about 1pm PDT, and it still took me 2 tries, and the 2nd time I had the eshop loading screen spinning around for a good 8 minutes.

But man, with my Wii U and 3DS wallets combined, it's like I've just made money!   Nice.

BTW, is the Best Buy Eshop card sale still going on?

I never found Super Mario 2 (Doki Doki) to be that hard, but I usually beat the game with Toad and Peach.
Me neither. Using Peach is practically cheating.

I may be wrong, but it seems like there's this inertia thing going on with Mario, where if he lands on a platform at speed, he actually moves a little bit before coming to a full stop.

And if I had the time, equipment, or the inclination, I would do a let's play or livestream of me playing it.  I'm on 7-2 now, and there's this incredibly frustrating part where I've got to get up this group of 3 staggered platforms, each with at least 1 or 2 of those fuzzy round guys buzzing all around it.   Only they're going so fast, and in freakin' synchronization, so that I can't make it to the third platform without taking a hit.

97
I'll also "pipe in" about Mario and say I'm not completely sure if saying Lost Levels is harder than Super Mario 2 is accurate.  I've been replaying Super Mario 2 aka Doki Doki on Wii U lately, and that game is freakin' really, really hard.   Maybe unfairly so.   Maybe it's easier with the Princess, but with Mario it is insane.   Very had to make accurate jumps, and enemy placement is Ninja Gaiden level sadistic.
