Keep getting an error when trying to get to that Mario game.  Is everyone trying to download that right now?

727
I'm in!

728
Okay...has anyone successfully bought something from the e-shop yet, aside from Bob?

729
As of 10:30pm Pacific, here's what I get from the e-shop:

"Error Code:  007-2503

Nintendo eShop is currently undergoing maintenance.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  Please try again later."

Arrgh.  The thought of someone enjoying excitebike 3D right now is oddly vexing.

The eShop is trying to tax me.

Oh, man, I was worried about that.   I don't get taxed when I buy Wii points through the shop channel, hoped that that would be the same here.

Oh and Yahoo is now powered by Bing ;O

Wait, seriously?  I missed out on that news.

732
At least I can load the internet browser.  I like how when asking me too choose a search engine, my choices are google and yahoo.  Not bing. :-)

733
Darn shop won't load.  Error Code: 005-4240, which I'm guessing is the code for "We don't have our **** together," or "Oh jeez, the shop is too crowded!"

Oh Nintendo, I've got my Visa card out, ready to input my credit card number to buy me some Nintendo bucks!  Come on, just take my money already!  I want me my green-hued Mario game!

734
50%!

If this goes into error like it did for Bob, I'm gonna stop, enjoy my last bug free moments of Ridge Racer, and come back in half an hour.

Wait, 75% now!

735
Now updating...my god, this is slower than that 1st update.  Is that because Nintendo is now taking back the OK GO video?  Too bad, I like that band.

I actually kind of don't like this. It's too tempting to abuse full save states. The Wii Virtual Console forces you to play as you would on the original system.

Quote
So it's more like a PC emulator's save states. Nice!

Yeah, I kinda agree here.  I remember back in college when me and my friends first discovered emulation, and we had no idea Nintendo would have a virtual console at all (this was way back in 1998-ish).  We stopped playing Goldeneye for like 3 weeks just played emulated NES games.  And I beat every single NES Mega Man game in 4 hours.  How?  Good old save states.  Fall on spikes?  Load state.  Years later, when I played Sands of Time and could just rewind mistakes at the cost of a sand globe thingy, I thought "Whoa, this is just like how I beat Mega Man!"

Well, if you really want to play this game, just buy the DS version.  It's essentially the same, but with slightly lower res graphics, without extra content, no voice acting, and it will cost you at least $50 to buy it new online, if you can find it at all.  I'm sure you don't have a problem with that, do you?

In all seriousness, I too am waiting for this.  2nd delay!  But since they have the box art now, I guess it's really coming out, right?

I'm sorry Half-Life isn't that great.  Its good but I wouldn't really be excited about Half Life 3.

Amen, I thought I was the only nay-sayer.  I played Half-Life, both expansions, Half-Life 2, and both of its expansions, and I agree, they are not as great as people say.  I think the first Half-Life was really revolutionary at the time with they way it told its story sans cutscenes (a'la Modern Warfare and Bioshock), but the gameplay was only good when you were fighting soldiers, which was like 1/4 of the game, if that, and that it actually had bosses (2 of them).

And then we had a whole lot of good FPS's after that, and Metroid Prime, and so when Half-Life 2 came out, it was pretty darn underwhelming, if not boring.  The only part of that game I liked was the last level, where you get to play with the Gravity Gun.  That last expansion pack (Episode 2) was actually pretty good, though.  Not fantastic, just pretty good. Really liked that last level fight against the walkers.

Regarding pennies, how do you get rid of them when sales tax usually results in goofy cents?

That brings up an interesting point.  Are we going to get charged sales tax for eShop purchases?  Because as it stands now, I don't pay sales tax when I buy Nintendo points through my Wii, though you would obviously pay sales tax if you bought a points card from a brick and mortar.  We've got nearly 10% sales tax here in California, so I appreciate the savings (Okay, I know that you're supposed to pay that at the end of the year or something, but seriously, who does that?)

Another case of Nintendo ignoring the competition? I think they are pushing sensibilities with the current Virtual Console and 3D Classic prices. I also think it's weird that I'm disappointed over the difference of one or two dollars in pricing.

Yeah, it looks like they looked at the Apple model and just said "screw that."  And though I previously had committed myself to getting Alleyway, I had thought that when I naively assumed it would be 2 bucks.  But 2.99?  Makes no sense, I know, but I'm now going to pass on that, I think.

I'm intrigued by the 3D classics, and may be willing to pay $6 for those.  Maybe.

But I'm just waiting for GBA VC's.  I know they haven't announced that, but they haven't ruled it out, and even if they charge maybe $10 or $12 a piece for those, I will go crazy with my credit card when that happens.  Fusion?  Zero Mission?  Advance Wars Black Hole Rising?  And think of all the Japanese imports that we might get.  How crazy, no, awesome would it be if we got Mother 3 that way?  That's how we got the original Sin and Punishment.

Hmm...I think this was either a launch or near launch gameboy game.  Fond memories.  I'll pick this one up.

I am still holding my breath for that first TMNT gameboy game.  But with the licence and all...never happen?

I honestly don't see where you guys are coming from on James.  Maybe its because of been doing a reverse marathon of RFN, I'm down to 212, but my opinion would be that James sounds like James

Hah!  I just discovered RFN 6 months ago and I'm up to (or down to) #181!   Step up your game!  :-)

James, don't change!  Your grumpiness and sharp-tongued insults are an essential part of the show.

Oh, and I don't think enough people have brought up Greg's assertion that the DS has had a profound effect on how we play RPG's.  I'm a dad of 2 girls and despite the fact that in my country (Los Angeles) we don't use public transportation much, I only play RPG's on my DS.  In fact, I think I stopped playing RPG's in general during the PS2 era (when I got married, go figure).  Missed it, but just never could find the time to sink into that kind of game.  The DS has been a godsend, for exactly the reasons that Greg brings up.  Loving it!

Maybe it doesn't matter because of the 3DS, but if I were a 3rd party DS publisher, this would piss me off to no end.  Not only do these Mario games sell more than 3rd parties anyway, but Nintendo is going to make them stand out even more on store shelves?  Talk about adding fuel to the flames.

That of course will change with Resident Evil.

You're referring to Mercenaries, I assume?  I'm hoping that the multi is really emphasized in that game, because if so, it's basically Left 4 Dead meets Resident Evil 4,  which will be all kinds of chocolatey awesome.

Got mine at launch, with 3 games:

SF43D:  8 hours 23 minutes
Steel Diver:  7 hours 28 minutes
Pilotwings Resort:  19 hours and 59 minutes

Obviously, Pilotwings was the first game to really sink its teeth into me.  Man, I just could not put that down.  I just finally got 3 stars on all the missions, including that last little bastard Diamond pedal glider mission, so I'm ready to put it down for a while.  I was reading in other reviews that people finished Pilotwings in 8 to 10 hours?  Maybe if you're Maverick.

I'm getting into Steel Diver now, which is difficult, but superb.  No one seems to like, no, love this game except for me, so whatever.

So ~26 hours with 3DS specific experiences.  Though I have to say I'm a big fan of the circle pad over the D-Pad (Have been since NES) so, yeah I can see why you want to use it as a DS.

Yeah, but the thing is, I have an XL, so I'm not going back to that tiny 3DS screen for DS or DSiware anytime soon.  The XL...I cannot begin to describe how awesome it is to game on that thing, portability be damned.  If the prices for that thing drop sometime soon (which they haven't been, even for used), I'd recommend everyone pick it up if you still have DS games to play.

The circle pad is ridiculously awesome, and surprisingly tough considering I've been abusing it a lot while playing SF43D.  When I do double circle supers, I am not gentle.

I'm just glad the Shinobi won't be like that crappy pS2 game.  That was enjoyable for 3 minutes, and then I got tired of getting killed by dogs.  Dogs!

747
Finally!  Jeez, I was getting worried their for a sec that this would never see the light of day, being a DS game and all.

I too have the bottom screen marks.  Mine are from oily-skin resideue, and wipe right off.  I have been playing my 3DS alot, I carry it everywhere, and have racked up probably around 60 to 70 hours of usage since launch.  I suspect it may be somewhat associated with my heavy playing of SSFIV3D and my distaste for using the stylus in general (goes back to original DS).

This never happened on the DS, though, and that's probably because the bottom touch screen is slightly raised and in closer proximity to the 3DS.

I noticed quite a dislike for Steel Diver on this episode, and the last one with TYP.

Am I the only one who loves this game?  I'm still on the last level, which is friggin hard, but still, I've been having a blast playing it.

Personally, I think Greg should really give it a try.  It seems more up his alley more than anyone else, given his affinity for side/vertical scrolling shooters.

I believe (if memory serves) Leonardo was the most "ryu-like" of the turtles with his moves.

Man, did me and my brother play the crap out of this game back in the day.

I think all of the Turtles games were, surprisingly really good in the NES and SNES era, with the glaring exception of that first game on the NES, electric seaweed and all.  Were they all done by Midway?
