The only thing I hate about Nintendo's touch screen is the possibility of losing the stylus.

Yeah, but let's take a real poll here:  how many extra styli/styluses do you have lying around?  Me, I have about 6 or 7 hiding around the house.  I think I got a 3-pack of styli and a cleaning cloth from a Gamestop bargain bin for 2 bucks, and I got another 4 from a Toys R Us 2 for $5 DS accessory sale, where I got a really cool belt-clip DS case and I just had to get something else.

Having an iPod Touch and a DS I would say that I definitely prefer a resistive screen for gameplay. I can see why the i devices use capacitative, for all their functions it is best, but for games it isn't great.

I also have a touch and a DS, and I would go further and say I prefer resistive period.  I accidently press stuff on my touch all the time--  it's just too sensitive.  And then, there's the stylus thing.   My fingers are too big, the buttons on the Ipod are too small.  If I had an Ipad, this would not be an issue.  If I had no need to press small buttons on the touch, this would not be an issue.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  When I first got the touch, I tried to used a stylus on it and found that it didn't work--  then I read about capacitive and the electrical signal it requires, etc... and I thought "that is the stupidest technology in the world."

I will proberly end up buying this though, cause it doesn't seem like this will happen in Australia.

Oh, shut up you Aussie.  You're getting a freakin' Ocarina!  Just play the damn soundtrack! :-)

All 3D trailers only have one level of depth, not just the Lantern trailer.

I think TurdFurgy may be right, though I wonder:  do 3D movies in general (besides those on 3DS) have more than one level?  Is there a technical reason for this?

Twelve racers? Just thinking about all of those blue shells & lightning bolts the lead racers will have to deal with is giving me a headache...

I agree.  I think with racing games in general, and Mario Kart in particular, more is not better.   I see 8 as a maximum without degrading the enjoyability of the gameplay.

Racing games are not FPS's, where more may be better (though tell that to MAG).

And Final Fantasy is kind of getting into Sonic territory where it used to be a well respected series and has since become a joke.  FFXIII and XIV have both been rather poorly received.

I think this may be relative--  maybe where most FF's were universally lauded, 12 and 13 were....still lauded, but not by all.  Including myself (not lauding it, that is).

Like how, for example, FFXII basically plays itself so you're mostly just steering your character to the next cutscene?

Which is exactly why I didn't like them.   To be perfectly honest, I never played 13 (I don't have an HD console), but even if I could, I wouldn't have because it apparently has a similar combat system to 12, which I played for about 10 hours and wanted to email Square Enix, asking for my time back.  Oh man, did I hate that game.  And I bought it at launch for full price.  I saw it used 2 months later for 30 bucks at gamestop.

I love active time battle.  Love it.  I'm too old to give a rat's ass about story in games, because stories in games will always suck compared to..oh, I don't know, BOOKS.  So I play games for gameplay.  Actually playing the game.    It's the only significant flaw I see in these modern FF games, if they went back to ATB or something where you actually play the game, I will go back to that series.  If not, the buh-bye.  I know it's just one thing, but it seems like a central gameplay concept that I just can't get over.

Mmmmm..  Perhaps a steel diver sequel.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this tech demo turned game is the best thing since sliced bread.  I love this game.

Oh, and here's something which I'm sure someone has thought of, but not nearly enough people are excited about:

Netflix.  Watch a movie on the big screen, and do things like rate, surf IMDB (yeah, I'm one of those annoying jerks), look at related movies, reviews, etc..  And of course, have touch-screen fast forward, play, stop, pause, etc. buttons.    Or even scene selections, with video images to choose chapters?  A lot of potential there, especially if you love Netflix like I do.   A lot of people complain about their Wii gathering dust.  In my house?  It's my blu-ray player instead.

That is just nonsense and total click-bait

You know, I almost never hear the term "click-bait" but I think it applies more and more to the bullshit we see on websites, esp. gaming websites like IGN, and...well, maybe mostly IGN.  Maybe this is off-topic, but I usually view multiple gaming websites and IGN has just really been sickening me for the last few years.  But why is it that a lot of the "click-bait" that I see on gaming websites tends be negative on Nintendo?  I'm not saying this as a fanboy, I'm just sayin'.

What people should realize is that there is a graphical wall that has been hit since the last generation.

I totally agree.  If you look at graphical differences between generations, what's perceivable to the average human has been getting less and less dramatic.  Atari to NES, SNES to N64.  More than things like particle effects or dynamic lighting, HD resolution (especially on HD TV's) was the most noticeable change between last generation and this one.  But since there won't be a big resolution change between now and the next generation (except maybe now all games will go 60fps at 1080), I don't see things looking astoundingly better.  Hell, I'm typing this on a mid to high-end gaming PC, and when my brother comes over and watches me playing Black Ops, he says he can't tell the difference between this and his PS3 (though I can, let me tell ya).

From a mind-blowing perspective, MGS2 is pretty awesome.

Oh my god, are we calling that "mind-blowing?"  I have a few different expletives I would use.  To be honest, I would steer everyone away from that game.  It's fun during the game, and the story is alright, up until the last bit after the main character (who I shall not name, to avoid spoilers) gets buck-naked.  And then it just gets so bat-**** crazy (story wise) that I my jaw was on the floor thinking what crazy idiot thought this up?  Oh, Hideki.

Personally, I don't think you need to have played any of the other games prior to enjoy Snake Eater, and especially considering that there's no personal radar in the game, it may even be better in terms of gameplay.  When I first started playing, the lack of personal radar really freaked me out.

I'd imagine if the games were to be remade for 3DS, the development duties would be handled by Matrix Software since they developed the remakes of III, IV, IV:The After Years and then made The Four Heroes of Light.

Oh man, I would love that.  I'm glad I'm not the only one ready to sing the praises of Matrix's remakes.  They are good, and I would love to see more from them on 3DS.  Adrock, if you could see me now, you would see me touching my nose and pointing at the virtual you.   The art style they did III, IV, Heroes of Light, and Nostalgia with, in 3D?

I'd also like to see them make it hard, like with IV, which was so hard that I almost cried at times.  I like that, because I'm messed up that way.

But the console will fail if Nintendo exclusively caters to that audience alone, and not to the hardcore.

Yeah, but Nintendo needs the casual market too, and that's the tightrope its walking.  If Wii-U is only able to sell about 55 million units worldwide by its 5th year on store shelves, people will see that as a failed console.  55 million by year 5?  That's the Xbox 360 right now.

Backwards Compatability- So Wii-U is backward compatable with Wii and not GCN, well 86 million people have Wiis and if they really want to play GCN games, then they should't get rid of their Wiis.

Maybe I feel this way because I never bought a Gamecube (I was led astray by the PS2, and have always regretted it), BUT I would love it if they offered GCN games on Virtual Console on Wii-U.  If they up-rezed it on the fly and they only cost $15 each, I would not only love it, I would marry it and give it all my money, making my wife a broken woman.  Oh yes.

And right now, as much as I hate it, Microsoft has it in this country

You know, I think among gamers, and to be more specific, 15-25 year olds who play games, both male and female, you're probably right.  But I don't know if that would change, no matter what Nintendo did.   Americans, more than the Japanese, really latch on to subcultures and identities, and as a result latch on to brands that they perceive (or were marketed to make them perceive) as fitting that identity.  What Microsoft did, from the launch of the first Xbox, was identify that group, which at the time gravitated mainly towards PC games like Quake and Starcraft, the "hardcore," and cultivated that group over the course of 10 years, marketing and brand-wise, with games like Halo, Fable, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, etc..  And Nintendo?

Well, Nintendo made Nintendo games.  Mario.  Zelda.  Really cute adorable Pikmin.  Smash Bros.

Nintendo expanded that audience, in a really smart way, with the Wii.  But I don't see any way that Nintendo is going to get that Xbox crowd back (and it may be up for debate whether they ever had that demographic in the first place).  Not unless Nintendo does something radical.  And by radical, I mean stupid.  Like start making modern day military shooters.  Make the next 60 hour open world bleak Fallout game.  Oh, and stop making Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, or Metroid games, because most people (unfortunately) see those games as childish and not "edgy" enough.

Does anyone really think the pimply-faced 16 year old calling everyone a homophobic slur on Xbox Live is going to enjoy playing a game like Animal Crossing or Mario Party?  Or would gladly own a system that allowed him to play those games?  I think not.

Nintendo Gaming / IOS ports to 3DS ware - Yay or Nay?
« on: June 08, 2011, 08:39:29 PM »
While I was browsing the eshop last night, I got to thinking--  I really want companies to try and make a quick buck off of me and port IOS games to the eshop, either in 3D form or plain old 2D form.  This may sound crazy, but bear with me here.

My wife has an Iphone which I used to buy games for, but I don't anymore, even if there is a 99cent sale.  I bought games likes Dead Space, NBA Jam, SSF4, that Capcom arcade thing, some vertical or side scrolling shooters.  I tried them once, and never played them again.  Why?  You know why.  Because the controls suck donkey nuts.  For Angry birds or whatever, IOS controls are fine.  But that Dead Space game, I played it for 2 minutes and gave up because in order to control Isaac or whoever, my big fat thumbs are covering half of the Iphone's screen most of the time so I can't see anything.  I'm sure this is not an issue with the Ipad, but it was game-breaking for me on the Iphone's tiny screen.

On the 3DS, however....this would be all kinds of awesome.  Circle pad, buttons, all these would resurrect this game for me, along with plenty of others.  That Simpsons arcade game?  Awesome.  R-Type?  Awesome.

I know companies like Gameloft liked to bring their games over to DSIware, but those games sucked.   But EA or Capcom, that would be another story.  I would be more than happy to pay for those games again for the ability to play them with buttons, dpads, and sticks.

This is not the first time this has come up on the forums.  I know, because I started a discussion thread on this soon after launch, which died a few weeks ago.  :-)

With that said, I've got 5 3ds games so far:  Pilotwings, Steel Diver, SSF4, Dead or Alive, and Ridge Racer.  I have perfect eyesight, and I see the 3D perfectly.  It is truly beautiful.  Surprisingly, I think Steel Diver's 3D effects look best.   Pilotwings I had to turn down the 3d to half, though after effectively beating it in 20 hours, I think it may have to do with constantly changing the focus of my eyes between the background/horizon and my flying vehicle.  I also noticed that in SSF4, whenever Zangief does a spinning piledriver on my (Ryu), during the end of that when he's got Ryu ass up with his legs splayed out and one foot trying to stick out of the screen, that makes my eyes a little uncomfortable.  Ridge Racer and Dead or Alive look great.  No, make that awesome.  They look awesome.

for those wondering(dont know if it has been mentioned).. yes you can 100 percent change your zip code to that of one with no sales tax. and it will not check against your credit card billing address as some suggested it might.    Helena, Montana what up

Yup, I mentioned that, I think.  I did not, of course, suggest that someone actually do that, since I am unsure if that would be illegal or not.  Nor would I ever mention that any California zip codes are sales tax free regarding Nintendo.  I would, never ever ever, give people examples of California zip codes for reference, which typically start with 9, such as 95064, 90035, 90210, etc..  Yes, 90210 is a real freakin zip code.

If you've been charged sales tax and don't live in one of these states, you need to call Nintendo and pitch a fit.

Hmm...I also noticed that you enter your U.S. zip code separately and it explicitly says "For Sale Tax purposes."  Not that I'm suggesting one misrepresent their zip code to avoid paying sales tax, but...I wonder if this would work?  Would they check your zip against your CC records when you are adding money to your wallet?  Because I kinda feel bad for people who are paying sales tax for Super Mario Land, since I do not (CA).

On another note, Super Mario Land is crazy.  World 3 is based on Easter Island (like, the real Easter Island) and World 4 is Japan or China, with bouncing ninjas/chinese vampires/whatever who literally cannot die.  I think only World 1 was actually based on the Mushroom kingdom.  Everything else is real world.

Oh man, that would be awesome.  $9 for games like Aria of Sorrow, Zero Mission, Advance Wars, Minish Cap?  Maybe $1 tacked on for Japanese imports like...dare I say...Mother 3?

And regarding our friend Mario...

It has been awhile since I played it as well, I really do not like the physics/controls in the game. With that said it is better then I remember it, despite the goofy mechanics like the fireball. It is a pretty unique game overall.

Oh yes, the physics and the controls are super weird.  Would have demanded my money back after being spoiled by good Mario controls in the intervening years, but the restore point feature/cheat makes it bearable.

If you haven't played that far yet, wait till you get to World 2-3.  OMG.  I totally forgot about that level until it started, and my jaw just dropped.  Why haven't we had that kind of level in any Mario games since?  So freakin' cool.

720
Playing supper Mario land...wth, it's been 20 years since I played this, very different from my memories.  What's with the fireball that bounces just once on the ground and launches straight into space as if it's been punted by a young Clark Kent?  And the bouncing bugs that actually take 2 fireballs to kill, violating the cardinal rule of Mario and his deadly instant-kill fireballs?  And Mario is so floaty, I would swear I was playing the Princess in Mario 2!

721
Finally downloading Mario.

Of interesting note:  Nintendo is not making me pay sales tax!  (I'm in California).

722
OMG.  Excitebike.  3D.  If you haven't already, then while you're playing try slowly sliding the 3D on and off.  Wow.

Oh, and how the freak do you play this game?  I seem not have not only forgotten the basic mechanics, but also the buttons.  Okay, NES, two button game.  Boost and accel?  But then, can you do both at the same time?

723
Down again!  Arrgh.  They took my money, let me download the Pokedex, and shut me out again.

Maybe I should just trade in my 3DS for the Sony Vita when that comes out.  Sony would never let its network and online store crap out like--- oh , wait.

724
Okay, I'm usually a cynical bastard, but...."unwrapping" new software on your main menu?  That is just too cute.

Downloading the Pokedex...I wonder what exactly those colored earrings are supposed to represent....or are they actually just supposed to be earrings?
