TalkBack / Re: Mass Effect 3: Special Edition Review
« on: November 19, 2013, 02:29:35 AM »
I think Mass Effect is emblematic of what's wrong with most gaming today:  the emphasis on story as on par with or above gameplay.   Hell, I blame Ninja Gaiden.  I was replaying it last week for the first time in years and I noticed I really hated those cutscenes-- they are so cheesy and long.   Starting mashing A on my 3DS and realized that GOOD GOD you cannot skip them or make the text load any faster.

And to think I liked these cutscenes -- NO I was ENRAPTURED by these cutscenes back in 7th grade.  Geez.

On another note, I CANNOT BELIEVE that Senran Kagura has been localized and released.  This is crazy.  Xseed passed on Retro Game Challenge 2 but they're picking up this?   Is there a huge market for this game that I'm not aware of?

Don't laugh, damn it, but I am somewhat curious about Barbie Dreamhouse Party.   My oldest daughter's been watching that a lot lately and it is VERY intelligent...lots of tongue-in-cheek stuff and references for adults, like My Little Pony.   I wonder the game has some of the show's humor....

You know, I was in the bathroom, doing what I invariably always do when I'm in the bathroom, reading a book.   Specifically, re-reading the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.   And I realized that the absolute best way, the most accurate by far, to describe the Phoenix Wright games is to call them MYSTERY GAMES.

More than any other game I can think of, you're truly trying to solve a mystery, just like mystery detective, where you're presented with a collection of clues and you have find "the truth."   I wouldn't necessarily compare it to Sherlock Holmes, though---  in Sherlock Holmes mysteries, the "puzzle" to be solved hinges on finding who the culprit it.

The Ace Attorney games are closer in structure to Monk mysteries (you know, the TV show with Tony Shalhoub).   Like in Monk, it becomes really clear, really fast who the real culprit is.   In Monk, it's usually before the 2nd commercial, and in Ace Attorney, it's usually by the 2nd day of the trial.

Instead, the true mystery lies in the HOW.  How did the culprit do what he/she did?   How do you prove it?   And that is where the fun of the game is, because just like Monk, the HOW is just absolutely implausibly crazy.  But if the game finds you in the right mood, there will be times where you reach this precipice of zen where you see all the threads of evidence on the screen and everything will just "make sense."   It's pretty damn thrilling.

I own the two that rereleased on WiiWare. Never finished the second one. I did d/l the 5th bonus case on the first one and had fun with that too.

Yeah, the 5th bonus case (made specifically for the DS release) was pretty good.  I liked the shadow puzzle.   But I would HIGHLY recommend the 2nd game, Justice For All.   I remember all the cases in the game just being absolutely pitch perfect and constructed really well, especially the 2nd case where Maya was accused of murder (yeah, AGAIN).

I also came to the series a little late (though I've caught up to all of them now).   I think what's important to keep in mind is that this is basically an adventure game that is heavily based on logic puzzles, especially linguistic logic puzzles.  And when I say adventure game, I mean more in the vein of Monkey Island than Zelda.

Also, the music is AWWWWESOME.   Especially the music when cross-examinations get intense.  Oh, and the save screen music from the first game.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NWR Forums Top 10 Zelda Games
« on: October 05, 2013, 02:00:43 AM »

The NES games are pretty damn rough and don't hold up well and I'll be damned if those shitty touchscreen Zeldas are going to even sniff my top ten.

I have not yet played:
Minish Cap
Four Swords Adventures
Four Swords Anniversary
Phantom Hourglass
Spirit Tracks

Okay, I still liked Spirit Tracks, even though it was...shall we say, not as strongly inspired as we're used to seeing with Zelda games?   Still definitely worth the price of admission.

But Phantom Hourglass was pretty darn good.   The one boss fight where the top screen was from the first person perspective of this invisible boss?   Crazy amounts of cleverness and ingenuity there.  Never seen in a game before, or since.

1.   Ocarina of Time
2.   Link's Awakening
3.   Link to the Past
4.   Wind Waker
5.   Majora's Mask
6.  Twilight Princess
7.  Skyward Sword
8.  Phantom Hourglass
9.  Spirit Tracks
10.  Oracle of Seasons

And yes, I would NOT include Zelda 2 or Legend of Zelda on my list.

On a semi related note, a Gamestop employee just called me to let me know that my pre-order of "Legend of Zelda HD" [their words] just arrived.   Aah...Gamestop.

Was listening to the 8-4 podcast today and heard the guys talking about a Streetpass maximum of 3000?  WTF?   I'm curious as to what happens exactly at 3000--  do get get to delete some older streetpasses, or does the green light just never come on?  And what about the streetpass games, especially the ones that I actually paid for (Warriors Way, Mii Force)?

I'm not anywhere near 3000 yet--  I've only got about 600 streetpasses.  But I've noticed the streetpasses becoming more and more frequent lately, most likely as sales are going up.   I'd guess at this rate, and if I'm vigilant about clearing them out frequently, I may reach 3000 in a couple years.

You can use the Gamepad for Wii games - can't use the Gamepad controls...

Can't get any more half-assed than that.

Well, it's not COMPLETELY unjustified....the gamepad cannot substitute for pointer controls.   At best, it can substitute as a classic controller, but not all Wii games support classic controller (maybe most don't?).

My brother is interested in trying this series. Between this and EO4, which would you recommend?

I only ever played the demo for EO4, but I would still recommend Millennium Girl. The Story Mode is really built to ease new players into things and offer something a little more familiar to people who aren't used to hardcore dungeon crawlers.

Plus the overworld from EO4 made things much more complicated. MG was simple, fast and fun.

Actually i really liked the overworld from EO4.  They added a lot of challenge, especially after the 2nd land when you,re trying to avoid the FOE's there.

Oooh man.   So for $50, you're getting digital versions of MH3 on both 3DS and Wii U.   And we have until Sunday.

Well, I guess I'll have to stop by Best Buy for more eshop point cards tomorrow.

Japanese-Style RPG?

Okay, the last time I saw a game that fit this description, it was Septerra Core.  Remember that one?

I guess Ubisoft is trying to jump on the bandwagon of the JRPG craze.   It's making it hard to be a proper JRPG fan, with JRPG's being SO POPULAR these days.  JRPG's are just PRINTING MONEY here in the West.  Yeah, sure.  that's it.

I'm grabbing Bit Trip Saga finally with this ridiculous price.

Alot of people kind of pooh-pooh it, for less than perfect performance, but I think it's fantastic.   Especially love using the stylus for Beat instead of twisting the Wiimote.

And I thought I got a deal when I picked up the physical copy for $18.   Geez.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars I've been wanting you ever since I heard you were similar to Advance Wars Days of Ruin. I may finally get you now.

Eh...maybe thematically similar, but in terms of gameplay it's much much closer to Fire Emblem, with characters levelling up, etc..

It's a fun game, and pretty long (about 40 hours).   My only issues with it were that the extra missions were stupid and not worthwhile, the game becomes far too easy because of the "recon" unit (the camoflauge girl, can't remember her name), and the way they up the difficulty in the late game is super cheap and lazy (lots and lots of drones).

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN RetroActive #28: Pandora's Tower
« on: August 07, 2013, 04:10:17 AM »
Thankfully, I had already picked this up--  being a DS owner made me VERY paranoid about not getting Xseed games right away.  I wasn't planning on playing this until I finished the Last Story, but....

So I just played through what I'm guessing is most of the first tower, the Treetop Tower.   My initial thoughts:

1.   This game is reminding me a whole lot of the first Devil May Cry back on the PS2, and I don't think that's a good thing.   The look of the tower, the empty dreariness, the combat (replace the chain with the sawed off shotgun).   I'm not happy about that.

2.  Mavda (the old lady) -- With a little audacity tweaking, that could be Bane, flat out.   Geezus.

3.  I hate the controls.   Classic controller is available, but there seems to be some pointer aiming involved, which is ridiculous with the Left Analog.  So you basically have to choose Wiimote and Nunchuck.  Now, that isn't horrible, at least, not on other games, but in this game, it makes no sense.  Why force me to target with the pointer?   Just lash out at the nearest enemy.  Why do I have to press a seperate action button just to pick up stuff on the ground?   Why not just map that to the attack button, like every other game does?   Or better yet, just let me pick it up automatically, without a button press, if I just walk over it.

It's not a horrible game, but it isn't particularly special.    I'll keep playing it, but I hope it gets better.

It seems like 95% of the people I StreetPass with at Walmart have Animal Crossing: New Leaf as their last played game, guess that is good news for the game.

Yeah, that actually seems to be a good indicator, doesn't it?  I had, like, 15 animal crossing streetpasses during the 1st week, and I realized "Oh crap, I better go out and buy this game."   And hey, turns out they sold really well.   Same thing happened with Fire Emblem back in March.   I think I got at least 5 of those DAY OF release.

No Wii U eShop games? The usual!

I know, it's horrible.   This is why I'm not taking advantage of the stupid $10 for $100 deal, because when I look at the Wii U eshop, the only thing I want that I don't already have is Earthbound.  And I don't have a lot.  Kid Icarus?   Come on, most of us already got the 3D version of that for free on the 3DS, and don't give me any of that "Well, not everyone has a 3DS" bullshit.  Look at the numbers.   Chances are, everyone who's reading this right now has a 3DS, and not even 1 in 4 will have a Wii U.  And this is a hardcore Nintendo site.

What makes me upset is that I am tired of booting into Wii mode.   Will I ever get more of my VC in Wii U?   The only 3rd party game we have is Mega Man X.  Which I'm thankful for.   But it's not enough.  At this point in the 3DS lifetime, we already had Link's Awakening, Gargoyle's Quest, Super Mario Land, Metroid 2.

I have a 3DS that I take to work, I ride public transportation, I work in DC, and I don't think I've street passed with anyone more than 5 times.

You're in Washington DC?  Well, there's your problem right there.   Didn't you watch House of Cards?   All the politicians are playing Pee Ess Veeta's all the time.

TalkBack / Re: Shin Megami Tensei Day-One DLC Is Live
« on: July 17, 2013, 03:00:00 AM »
Ah, so that's the leveling shortcut DLC that I've heard mentioned on Twiiter.

The game is packed with a lot of stuff as it is, but that last DLC still seems a bit icky. Granted, it's nothing new in video games and it might be useful for those that want to play through the game faster.

Yeah, I'm glad that other people gave me the heads up.  I will avoid this DLC like the plague.  I, personally, think DLC like this ruins games.   I understand this is optional, and I am exercising my choice not to completely **** up my game experience while others can exercise their choice to do just that.

But I just wish it was labeled more clearly--  I paid for and downloaded that stupid Golden map pack for Fire Emblem (Golden Gaffe, Infinite Experience, Infinite Regalia) thinking they were well constructed maps--- THEY ARE NOT.   They are really stupid ways to get gold, exp, and gear, mindless, dumb, basically a shooting gallery.   If I paid more attention to forum posts, I probably could have saved $6.50.   That's an NES VC game.

121
This is Weimar Germany all over again.

122

I haven't bought Fire Emblem yet, but I plan on buying it; however, I'm not at all familiar with Shin Megami Tensi games I guess this means I'd better take some time and learn about them so that I can decide if I want to take advantage of this deal.

Are Shin Megami Tensei games such that a guy like me that knows nothing about the story can jump in on IV and still understand well enough to enjoy the game?

Being JRPG's (and not, say, a western RPG), the stories are not linked between games.   If anything, the only thing linking Mega Ten 4 and previous entries (as well as, say, any of the Mega Ten spinoffs like Devil Survivor, Strange Journey, etc.) is the gameplay conceit of collecting demons (aka Pokemon).

As for Fire Emblem:  Awakening (aka Fire Emblem:  Intravenous OCD Heroin).   I think you can get it for a couple bucks off MSRP right now, which is probably the cheapest it will EVER GET for a new copy.   If you don't believe me, look up how much a new copy of Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon costs.   Or Path of Radiance.  Or Radiant Dawn.   It's disgusting what those sellers on Amazon are doing.

123
Wait a minute....I already own, and have put 120 hours into, FE Awakening, and I've got a preorder for the special edition of Mega Ten 4 which you will have to pry from my cold dead hands.

Do I get 30 bucks too?

I still going to buy this.   When it's a little discounted.   BUT

What really worries me is that I was hoping (and I'm not alone in this, I'm sure) that Gamecube games would be released at some point on the Wii U Virtual Console.   This HD re-release seems to make this somewhat unlikely.   And what in the WORLD is the reason that they're limiting Wii U VC to only NES and SNES?
