Nintendo Gaming / Re: 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
« on: January 02, 2012, 01:08:30 PM »
I finished 999 a couple days ago, ending up doing two more play throughs since you need to get the safe ending before getting the true ending.  I was surprised how long the ending of the game was, I figured it would take a while to tie everything together but they story just kept going and going.  I was impressed by how almost everything in the story was all tied together so well at the end.  I agree with what others said, if you haven't gotten the true ending you haven't finished the game, not even close.  This game may have been my favorite experience on the DS, previously it was either Hotel Dusk or Elite Beat Agents but I think this tops it.

I was happy that they added a little more to the story after the credits, when the credits started I was disappointed by how they left the story unfinished but the post-credits story satisfied most of my questions.  The one thing that still didn't completely make sense to me that they didn't really answer was why Lotus was there instead of her daughter who was in the first game.  Everyone else being there was well tied in.  I also completed missed that the woman along side the road at the very end was supposed to be Alice, I thought it was a young Lotus, which didn't quite make sense either.  The scene with June and Junpei in front of the elevator where he thinks she's worried about being in the elevator alone with him was hilarious.  I thought having the sudoku puzzle at the end was good, the last thing I wanted at that point was a puzzle I'd get stuck on.  The only other complaint I had was once I got to the point that I used a guide I realized how few of your decisions actually affect what happens in the game, when you're playing it before using a guide the choices you make seem so much more important.  But overall a brilliant game.

I didn't know Nintendo was supporting that horrible piece of legislation.  It's embarrassing that bills that are written entirely by the major corporations that they're aimed to help, even if they're bad for the majority of people, are even considered by congress.

At least Nintendo isn't as slimey of a company as GoDaddy, who conveniently had a bug that stopped people from transferring domains away from them.

I didn't know there were multiple endings to Hotel Dusk, I managed to get "Game Over" a couple times for making the wrong choices a couple times but I thought the game only had one ending.

I just finished my third play through of 999.  This time through the puzzles got a little bit irritating but the story has gotten more and more intriguing.  I've gotten three endings, all different and all bad.  Going to play through it one last time and get the true ending then I think I'll be done with this game.  But it's been a blast to play through and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story gets tied together.

I'm still working on this game but I've really enjoyed what I've played of it so far.  The camera can be a little frustrating at times but I haven't found it as bad as most people made it out to be.  Everything else about the game I've liked and I'd definitely be interested in a sequel.

I picked this up during Black Friday week when Amazon had it on sale.  Just finished my second play through, the game lives up to its hype and then some, the story is great, the mood is amazing, and the puzzles are very well done.  I could have done without some of the excessive description and violence at times but overall the game is amazing.  I think I'm going to play through one more time without a guide then use a guide to get to the remaining endings.

For anyone who hasn't played this game yet, you need to, it's everything people say it is.

Are there any other games out there that are similar (branched story with multiple endings, heavy on the story, maybe with similar types of puzzles, not necessarily with a violent story) to 999?  I've played Hotel Dusk and the Phoenix Wright games and while I really enjoyed them, having a branching story where your decisions impacted the story instead of just following the story as it progressed was really interesting.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii/Gamecube Game with great interactive storytelling

I vote for Eternal Darkness, too.  That game had a great story.

Had you not said specifically Wii/Gamecube I'd have said 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors or Hotel Dusk for the DS, in my opinion both had better stories than anything I've played for Wii/Gamecube.  But Eternal Darkness has a great story and was in general an excellent game.

I fit into this category, we've started using the Wii for Netflix.  Also use the Wii to read up on what's going on in the world using the News channel.  But I've also used it for games plenty, too, there may not be much that came out this year but there have been plenty of games that have gotten cheap recently that I had passed on earlier and picked up recently.

What are the odds 2K Sports does a decent job on MLB 2K12?  Probably not good but I can hope, it's been disappointing that there haven't been more good baseball games for Wii.

Well, a lot of the people who would have pre-ordered it were probably the people who imported it instead when NOA dragged their feet on bringing it to the US.  I have a feeling the game isn't going do well since Nintendo has waited so long to release it.  And if they're waiting to see how it does before deciding on The Last Story, that won't be coming out until about the time the Wii U releases.

This story was a lot more interesting until it got the the part about being a Gamestop exclusive.  Not that I care about buying there but them being the only store carrying it reduces the chances of finding a deal on it.  I can't remember the last time I bought a game for more than $30, with the exception of a couple games that were $50 with $20 of credit from Amazon.  Games in general drop in price so quickly that I just can't justify paying full price when a game comes out new, it's so much more economical to be a little behind the curve.  Anyway, it's good that Nintendo is releasing the game here, even if it's through only one store and probably will have little to no promotion behind it.

When I first heard about this game I was excited about it but between how long it takes to play one game and the fact that there aren't really mini games is making me think that I'll pass.  I was hoping for a cross between Monopoly and Mario Party but this just seems to be Monopoly taken to the extreme.

RE4 was a great game, the atmosphere in the game amazing, the gameplay was great, the story was solid, the graphics were great for the time, the characters were good, and the game was full of great moments.  I agree about the scene where you're in the house with Luis and being under constant attack, that was awesome.  The abandoned farm or whatever it was was also another one of my favorites, great atmosphere.

I bought the Wii version a couple years ago when it was $10 on Black Friday but haven't played much of it.  Maybe I should do that one of these days.

Donkey Konga was a blast to play.  I got the game the week it came out while I was in college and it became a big hit with the people in my dorm, most of whom weren't gamers.  I actually thought the song selection in the game was good, not necessarily songs I'd listen to but they were all fun to play.  Donkey Konga 2 on the other hand had a song list with a lot of songs that I like but I didn't find them nearly as fun to play.

Eternal Darkness was a great game, especially because of the atmosphere created by the sound.  Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life had such great graphics and music, it was a shame that the gameplay wasn't more intriguing.  Skies Of Arcadia was probably my favorite Gamecube game between the great gameplay, the awesome world to explore, and the great music.  Wind Waker's music was a perfect compliment to the graphics.

I finally beat Wind Waker a couple years ago after multiple attempts to play through it during the Gamecube era.  I don't know why I never originally got through it but it's a great game and it does hold up great.  The style of the game was excellent, the gameplay was great, the sailing was a little annoying at times but the exploration aspect was fun, and the story was solid.  The atmosphere of the game was so well done, from going to the grandma's house and feeling the sense of sadness, to how goofy Tingle was, the solemness of going underwater into the castle, all so greatly done.

Super Monkey Ball was the game that I got with my Gamecube, I had so much fun with it between the main game and the party games, especially monkey target.  I've purchased several of the sequels but none of them have quite matched the magic of the first game.

I never played the first Pikmin on Gamecube (but I'm working on playing through it now on Wii) but I picked up the second one and had a blast with it.  Such a brilliant idea for a game and also so frustrating that Wii never got an entry in the series, and neither did the DS, which I thought would be a good fit for the series with the touch screen controls.

Mario Sunshine just didn't do it for me, I tried hard to get into the game on more than one occasion but just couldn't.  I loved Mario 64 and I loved the Galaxy games but I just couldn't get into Sunshine.  Maybe I need to give it one more try one of these days.

Animal Crossing was a blast, I was seriously addicted to that game for a good year or so, I remember waking up early before school to play (collecting mushrooms maybe) which was insane considering I'm anything but a morning person.  The characters, the holidays, the change of seasons, the collecting aspect were all brilliant.  And the NES games being included was such a great bonus, I played so much Wario's Woods in particular.  The first year it was out I was over at a friend's house and there were 2 or 3 of us all in our Animal Crossing towns for New Years.  I never played the DS or Wii versions since reviews all said they were basically the game.  I'm thinking that I might pick of the Wii version since it's on sale for $15 on Black Friday.

I don't think the 3DS will be a complete failure or anything but handheld gaming has definitely peaked.  The casual market gets enough fun from their smartphones and tablets.  The market for younger children is definitely still there but I think the iPod Touch is eating into that market some and the growth of the tablet market may as well, especially with tablets like the Amazon Fire hitting low price points without being horribly underpowered.  As much as I loved my DS I feel no need to upgrade anytime soon.  I hope it does well so there's a great library should I get one eventually but I can't see it reaching DS levels of success.

Sounds like a good show.  Not that Nintendo would ever do it but including a DVD of the performance with Skyward Sword would be a great idea.

TalkBack / Re: Natsume Reveals the Best-Selling Harvest Moon Game
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:17:43 AM »
I agree that A Wonderful Life was a disappointment.  The graphics for the game were so good for a Harvest Moon game and when I started playing it seemed like the game had so much promise, but it didn't keep my interest for very long.

My favorite Harvest Moon game is still Harvest Moon 64.  That game was so good.  Magical Melody had a lot of good ideas to it but something about the game just didn't quite do it for me.  I recently started playing Rune Factory 2 and so far I really like it, the first Rune Factory was a good game and this game seems to be an improvement, and I just bought Sunshine Islands so I'm getting back into the Harvest Moon world after a long break away.

I'd be happy to get one of these but not getting too excited since the odds are probably more likely to not get one.  I'm kinda interested in Wii Party, probably not going to ever buy it unless it gets real cheap but for free I'd be happy to play around with it for a while.  I'd like a Wii Remote Plus since it's smaller than the Wii Remote +Wii Motion Plus but I don't need another remote in the house.  I'd prefer it was Pizza Hut instead of Domino's (what's up with that Reggie?) but free pizza is free pizza.

Nintendo Gaming / Best DS Harvest Moon?
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:38:33 AM »
I've decided that I want to pick up one of the Harvest Moon games for the DS but I'm still debating which game to get.  I have a couple of the Rune Factory games which are great but I want a regular Harvest Moon game since I haven't played any games from the main series since Magical Melody on the Gamecube.  From reading reviews, it seems like Sunshine Islands was the most well received DS Harvest Moon game so that's the one I'm leaning towards right now.  Anyone have any opinions?

Wii Winter Sports will be unveiled and announced at E3 of this year for a winter release. It will be motion plus enabled and include fencing and racquet ball.

This actually wouldn't surprise me at all.  There's been at least one "Wii" game every year since the Wii came out.  And I'd rather see this than Wii Music 2.

Leinenkugel's beer brewed in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is my beer of choice.  It's good stuff, unlike most beer which I don't really like.

Like basically every launch it will have one, maybe two good games and the rest will be weak.  That's how it is, especially since all of the diehard fans that buy the system at launch are desperate to buy anything so games get rushed out for launch, there's remakes, and most of the good stuff doesn't come out until later.  Here's what it'll probably look like:

Wii Sports HD
Madden
Ridge Racer
Monkey Ball
Pokemon Snap HD
Party game collections
Crap no one wants but people will buy because there's nothing else
