Nintendo Gaming / Re: Something Something Wii U Successor Somethng
« on: January 03, 2014, 02:36:07 PM »
I thought it came in multiple colors at launch.  I got one not long after launch and bought a green controller to go with the gray controller included with the system.  I agree, having different colored controllers was great, especially when having a group of friends over and taking turns playing 4 player games.

We demand faster, effecient, more sound products in every other aspect of our lives. Why do we not demand the same from game companies?

And what is so wrong about contraints? Without contraints, ingenuity would be meaningless.

What makes the gaming industry so special that it can throw all its flaws directly on the consumer? Why are we so privileged?

As the largest game only company in the world, Nintendo has a chance to shift the industry back to its rightful domain and innovative where there has only been excuses.
I think you're confusing gaming industry with tech industry.  Every version of Windows comes with day 1 security updates, almost all major PC software issues patches for bug fixes, my Android phone has several apps update every day, often involving bug fixes.  If you want to be an early adopter with anything tech related, there's a good chance that there will be some headaches involved.  And since the tech industry is booming, I doubt it will be changing anytime soon, for better or worse.

Specific to Nintendo, the last thing they need to be doing is anything that makes it harder on 3rd parties to make games for their system.

I prefer functionality to how pretty the console looks, so I think the Wii U design is great.  It's small which is the main thing for me since there's little spare space in our home entertainment console.  Anything much wider wouldn't fit and anything tall and top loading like the Gamecube would be a pain to use.  The lights on the front aren't obnoxious and annoying (unlike my cable modem which I had to hide in the back because it's so distracting) and honestly, I don't spend that much time looking at it so I don't care all that much what it looks like, though I think the simple black design looks fine.

Duck Tales Remastered is on sale on the eShop for $7.49.  I started playing it yesterday, I don't think I ever played the original game back in the day.  I've only played about an hour but it's really good, it's just like playing through an episode of the show.

Best Buy has sent out an email that through tomorrow, if you spend $100 in store, you get a $15 gift card.  So, you could get $125 worth of eShop credit and the $15 gift card for $100 (3x$35 cards plus 1x$20 card).

TalkBack / Re: High Nintendo Network Traffic Causes Pokemon Bank Delays
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:36:10 PM »
It seems like all of the major companies have network problems (didn't the free Left For Dead 2 deal break Steam for a while a couple days ago?) when hit by heavy traffic so it's not that surprising.  However, did they really think that it was a good idea to be releasing the Pokemon Bank during the week of Christmas when they had to know that traffic was going to be very high already with all of the people connecting their 3DSes and Wii Us that they got for Christmas?  They could have saved themselves some of the headache by just moving the release a week in either direction.  At the very least if they still had issues, they wouldn't have been the first experience for all of the new system owners.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the December numbers for Wii U are going to be quite good in the US.  There have been so many deals this month that have pulled people in plus the holidays.

I'll bring this thread back on track.

Wave Race

1. Sequel

2. Wii U

3. I don't really pay attention to what studios develop games, as long as it's someone good, I don't really care.

4. Take everything that made the N64 version (Gamecube version was good, too, but I have fonder memories of the N64 version) so great and expand upon it.  It's a game that I think would really benefit from HD visuals, the game looked great given the technical limitations at the time and it would modernize really well.  More tracks would be great and more shortcuts in the tracks.  The racing gameplay was great the way it was but expanding on the trick system a little bit would be good.  Maybe go Mario Kart style and include updated versions of older tracks, I'd love to play Drake Lake with modern visuals.  Obviously online multiplayer off-screen play using the gamepad.

I haven't played a Dynasty Warriors game since playing one of them for the original X-Box with my roommate.  Depending on how this turns out, I could definitely see myself buying this.  At least Nintendo had something more interesting to announce today that a new character in a game...

I've been sceptical of this "Nintendo fans only buy first party games" idea but thinking about it, rational people that want third party games would have long given up on Nintendo consoles leaving a fanbase that would consist mostly of Nintendo-only gamers.
I still don't buy that argument.  I'd consider myself a casual gamer (if I spent more than 5 or so hours a week on gaming, it's unusual) yet I still bought 35 3rd party games for the Wii.

If Nintendo ever released a console that was on par with the competition in every way, I don't see how it couldn't be a success.  As long as it was easy enough to port to, it'd get plenty of 3rd party games; just look at how many 360/PS3 games got ported to WiiU early in its life.  And it'd have the advantage of having Nintendo games, Sony and Microsoft can't match 3D Mario games and Zelda games with their exclusive offerings unless they throw tons of money at developers.  But Nintendo never has done that.  Maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see how it would fail.

Anyway, with a WiiU under the Christmas tree, I hope things improve.  While I wasn't a fan of the idea of the WiiU when it first released, the price drop and idea of off-TV play sold me; plus I'm not spending $400-$500 on a console that doesn't even have a game packed in so PS4/XBone were out of the question.

I'm going to be optimistic and say that December is going to be a good sales month for Nintendo.  There's been so many good sales over the past couple weeks that are drawing people in (like the Skylanders bundle for $219, the original bundle and Zelda bundle being on clearance at some stores, gift cards galore with purchase), it's gotta at least help some.

If anyone got one of the 20% off coupons for this week by spending $75 at Target on Black Friday, it does apply to the WiiU bundles available.

That's true, the Wavebird was the first good wireless controller, back when it came out it was amazing to be able to play without cords running across the room and people tripping over them and systems almost breaking.  The controller was a little goofy looking but it worked great.

That's too bad, I was hoping that maybe by some miracle this would be a great "sequel" to Eternal Darkness.  That game was among my favorites on the Gamecube and just seems like a game that could have developed into a really good series.  It's a shame that never happened.

TalkBack / Re: Rune Factory 4 Impressions
« on: August 04, 2013, 02:48:44 PM »
Sounds interesting.  I play the first two Rune Factory games and enjoyed them, though I never managed to complete either one.  I like the series (going back to the original Harvest Moon on SNES) but my problem with it is that it's such a big time commitment.  Back when I was in high school and could spend hundreds of hours on a game it was great, but I don't have the time or desire to sink that much time into a game now.

I'd like to hear impressions from someone who has played other games in the Rune Factory series, my other complaint about the Rune Factory/Harvest Moon series is that things never seemed to change quite enough from game to game but this game sounds like it has changed quite a bit compared to the earlier games in the series.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: 2013 Platinum and Gold status Choices up.

Both of the platinum rewards look pretty cool to me.  However, I only made gold so I'm debating between one of the downloadable Wii games and the calendar.

I would have been disappointed by the original DS, I got one a couple weeks before the DS Lite was announced (which luckily ended up having a defective screen and was returned) and the system just felt like a prototype and not a finished product.  But I returned to the original and waited for the Lite to come out so it never became an issue.

The Wii was a disappointment in that it seemed like it had so much potential early in its life that never got realized.  No Pikmin, no great MLB game, and motion controls just didn't feel like they got as many interesting uses on the Wii as touch screen controls did on the DS.  I probably had as much fun with the Wii as any game system I've ever owned but at the same I expected more.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 337: Eat My Maturity!
« on: May 20, 2013, 05:30:31 PM »
Great episode, finally just finished listening to it.  I found the discussion of death in games quite interesting.  Personally, there's a couple games that stand out in my mind.  The first was Harvest Moon 64, when the grandmother who sat in her rocking chair outside the bakery died, it was really sad.  It was probably 15 years ago that I played the game and I still remember it.  The second is 999, especially the first time reaching the "ending," just dying all of a sudden out of nowhere was quite shocking.  The story was dark enough to that point, then having that happen took things to another level and made the second play through even more eerie, knowing you might just die and get a game over at any minute.

Reading this news is the most interested I've been in the Wii U since it was announced basically.  Eternal Darkness was probably my favorite game on the Gamecube (either that or Skies Of Arcadia: Legends) and if they could manage to make an unofficial sequel that managed to build upon all that was great about the original, that would be amazing.  Not holding my breath but it would be awesome if the game actually does happen and turns out to be great.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Why would Nintendo opt out of E3 this year?
« on: April 28, 2013, 12:14:48 AM »
While it seems like a strange decision with the situation Nintendo is in right now, looking at the tech industry as a whole, Nintendo is right in line with what most other major companies are doing.  Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, etc. are stepping away from completely or greatly reducing their involvement in the massive tradeshows (SXSW, CES, etc) and holding more of their own events.

TalkBack / Re: Weighing My DS Backlog Options
« on: April 23, 2013, 11:12:19 PM »
999 was my favorite game on the DS and would rank very high on the list of my favorite games ever if I were to make one.  I was so addicted to the game when I started playing it, I think I got all of the endings in less than a week and even when I wasn't playing the game I couldn't stop thinking about it.  I hadn't been that into a game like that in a long, long time.  You'll know quickly whether the game is going to pull you in or not so if you play it and it's not your thing it won't be a major time investment and if it does draw you in like it has most who have played it, you'll tear through it quickly because once you get into it, the game is hard to put down until you get the true ending.

If you do go with 999, use a guide after a couple play-throughs (I believe I did 3 getting 3 different endings, then used a guide that was basically a decision chart to get the others) to get to the true ending.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Should Nintendo embrace "free to play"?
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:23:52 PM »
It can't hurt to let it be an option for 3rd party developers if they want to go that route, but to me free to play doesn't fit well on consoles.  It's fine for games on a smart phone or tablet where it's something to kill a little time but if I'm going to sit down to play a game on a console, I'd rather put that time towards a game that's a great experience that I have to pay for.

4 of the games I ordered arrived, all of them work and look like they're in good condition.  Starfox wasn't in with the rest of the games, I'm thinking they cancelled it without telling me but the others for a total of $6.70 is a steal.
