Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 112: Platform Ascot
« on: October 15, 2012, 01:01:33 PM »
Awesome, a new episode!

I never played the first game, but the music was kind of neat to listen to.

As soon as I heard the second game, I knew what it was. I loved DK Land even if it was hard to see the graphics! The music is unique and very memorable. I could have sworn I had requested this game in the past? Or I might be wrong.

The 3rd game's music, Bubsy, sounded so familiar, and after the game was revealed, I knew why: I used to own it before! Back then, I may not have been fully aware of the game's faults, but even I could tell something was off by the way the hero moved.

I never played the fourth game either.

I own the fifth game, Umbrella Chronicles, but didn't remember the music! I actually didn't like the game that much. It's not necessarily because of the genre either; I love House of the Dead Overkill, for example, and Dead Space Extraction was great too.

TalkBack / Re: The High Barriers to Entry in Competitive Pokémon

Great article! This is exactly why I never even attempted to get into competitive battling, despite my love for all the Pokemon games (of which I have beaten the story mode for every generation). I think I would have more fun battling someone who plays the game at the same level as me.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 300: SPARTAAA!!!
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:55:03 AM »
Congrats RFN, on reaching 300 episodes and keeping the listeners thoroughly entertained and informed throughout the years!

Finally finished listening to this episode, and I have to say: That was a very thorough, detailed examination of the beginning and end of the Wii console. For all its shortcomings and inability to retain the massive wave of new adopters over its lifetime, the Wii absolutely remains one of my favorite Nintendo systems of all time. I definitely feel like I haven't even begun to tap into the the many hidden gems within the VC and WiiWare service. There  are still some retail games I want to play as well.

Even if Wii U weren't to release yet, I would still have my gaming needs fulfilled, and I've never had to rely on either of the HD consoles (or PC) to fill in any gaps (owning DS and 3DS doesn't hurt either  ;) ).

It was definitely an interesting period to go through as a gamer. I was just amazed at the power of the Wii to bring in all these people I knew who hadn't seriously played video games. Wii Sports was a phenomena that Nintendo handled brilliantly.

I helped a bunch of friends out who were looking for the little white console by scoping out stores to determine when the next shipment of systems would arrive, or call them if I happened to see one in the wild. I bought one for my parents (with Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii).

And yet I look around me today and just about every single one of those friends and family members who picked one up during the 'mad rush' no longer play or own the system. It truly saddened me that their interest in it slipped so much, but after listening to you guys, I can understand a bit better how, in many ways, Nintendo dropped the ball in retaining all its new adopters for the long run.

I wish Nintendo much success with the Wii U (I will be there day one), and I'm looking forward to seeing them learn from their mistakes, as slow as the process may be.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 110: Very Serious
« on: August 06, 2012, 05:43:01 PM »
Nice work TYP (and Jonny) on another great episode! I really appreciate the efforts getting these out despite the busy schedule. I always enjoy listening to the music and the commentary.

Game 1 has an amazing soundtrack. I was glad you guys mentioned the official soundtrack and its unique title (PPPPPP) as well. It's a soundtrack I listen to almost every day on my MP3 player!

I was a bit proud of myself for being able to recognize Game 2 (well, I knew it was either the first or second title in the series!). I thought the Sonic Advance series was good but not as great as the Genesis titles. In my mind, it's been tough for Sega to top their original trilogy of Sonic 2D goodness, though I did like Sonic Rush a lot.

I'm disappointed in myself for not having played Games 3 or 4, but I plan to do so!

I was surprised I could actually guess what Game 5 was! I think I only rented Batman Returns one time back in the day when it was still new, but even that brief play time was enough for me to remember it vividly to this day. Konami SNES games were some of the best on the system, even when they were 'just brawlers.' Oh, and perhaps and it was my passion for the franchise that had something to do with it.

What I would really like to know is: how does the D-Pad compare to the old 3DS? I hope it's more comfortable and more like the DS D-Pad.

I'll echo the other comments and say great job you guys (you too Guillaume  ;) )!

James, how cool you found those old Game Boy games. I enjoyed hearing you talk about Kid Dracula. After seeing it in Nintendo Power I always wanted to play it but never did. I would love to see it on the VC.

Wow, episode 300 quickly approaching...

Oh man, I'm about 50 or 60 hours into Xenoblade and I don't think I've faced that horrendous boss Jonny talked about. Sounds awful! I hope getting over that hurdle is not going to be such an endeavor, but we shall see. I'll have to check out what some of you guys are saying about being able to change the way your partners behave in battle, as I surely glanced over that useful bit of information.

I'm still unsure about whether I want to get the 3DS XL or not. I honestly love the fact I can carry my 3DS around so conveniently. Also, I'm not sure I'm ready to dish out another two hundred bucks at this point.

Congratulations TYP! Awesome news, no wonder you've been busy.

I got 3 out 5 (games 1, 3, and 5).

I love the music for game 1, Pokemon Gold/ Silver. Amazing Game Boy (Color) music.

I could identify game 3, Paper Mario, within a few seconds of the first song. I have the offical soundtrack CD from back when Nintendo Power subscribers could order them through the Super Power Supplies Catalog. I would listen to that CD all the time!

I keep wanting to check out game 5, Rayman Origins, but I'm not sure I'm fond of the music, despite the praise for its absurdity and humor. The vocals sound like they could become annoying, but I know that listening to the music within the context of the game will likely have a different effect.

My wife and I continue enjoying each and every episode, keep up the great work!

The lack of leaderboards is sad.

I would love to try out the one-system, two-player mode, to be honest.

What bizarre bugs you have there COD!  :Q

Hm, I share Guillaume's passion for Kid Icarus: Uprising. It was interesting to hear Jonny talk about how the game could potentially be better if you could select three weapons for a given level and could swap between them at any time. However, I appreciate the design as it currently stands due to the added challenge.

It was really interesting to hear the ideas for retro handhelds Nintendo could produce. A cheap, small, sturdy, long battery life, system with some classic GB games installed on it. I think... 'e-paper' was brought up? That would be cool.

Anyway, I've been listening to the show since Nov./ Dec. 2010, but I haven't thought of any good questions to send in to the mailbag. One day!

I'm a newcomer to the series but I'm not sure I'm timid, haha.

Anyway, this game sounds like it could be a lot of fun just to mess around with all the different possibilities, and the GamePad interface sounds like it makes this a simple enough process.

What a strange collection of mini-games, and a bit unfortunate that the experience seems rather... uninspiring. So it's not exactly WarioWare, and it's also not Nintendo Land quality. I wonder what exactly they're aiming for here.

Ooo, I want!

It was great to hear from the winning Uprising team from neogaf. I love Uprising, and I haven't played too much online yet, but it's clear there's an incredible amount of depth and strategy to be had.

@Nub, the way you guys use teamwork is pretty awesome. I can imagine that plays a huge role in many of your team's victories when it's clear what role everyone is supposed to use.

I really enjoyed hearing Alex and Guillaume talk about one of my favorite Nintendo franchises, Kirby! (I couldn't believe Guillaume had never played Epic Yarn!). I was happy to hear Alex say he will definitely give the Wii game Return to Dream Land another play through. Hard mode is fun for sure, as are the optional Challenge Rooms inside the ship. The Challenge Rooms really test your skills at using various power-ups, which are surprisingly varied and difficult to master due to subtle nuances.

I loved the N-Focus segment, Nicholas. Your speech presents the information in a clear and concise manner, and who wouldn't want to know more about one of the best game music composers of our time? The music interjected through the segment made this a wonderful treat indeed.

« on: May 22, 2012, 05:09:27 PM »
Great episode (even if it was just a three person show)!

I already knew a 'little bit' about Guillaume but I still enjoyed his little 'interview.'  :)

Although I certainly couldn't tell from listening to him, it's possible Guillaume may be a little nervous starting out as the new guy. I think he did a great job and I look forward to seeing the camaraderie grow, for sure.

I enjoyed hearing about the Club Nintendo WiiWare offerings that Guillaume had to experience.
Jon's take on what constitutes Guillaume's ringing endorsement, back-of-the-box material: "You can do worse." Haha!

And according to Jon, Jonny's 'back-of-the-box' could be:
"This game is an interesting failure!"  ;D

Regarding Operation Rainfall: I had not realized they were still such an active force going strong. I really admire their efforts, but I wonder what's the limit of their scope, beyond the three games that started the whole movement? It will be interesting to see how much of an influence they can continue to have. As long as people remain united and act professionally...

To geo and roy: I hope this episode doesn't disappoint!

And of course, it doesn't! :) I enjoyed the music and the commentary as always.

So, this was a bad episode for me to try and guess why games were used. I've never played games #1 through 4!

I should've been able to guess the series when game #3 showed up (Okamiden). I was thinking Muramasa at first, but I knew that game had already been done before. I haven't played Okamiden, but I did finish Okami on the Wii. I was not thinking much, heh.

Game #5 (NSMB Wii) was a cinch, of course, being the big Mario fan I am (and that a lot of us are!). Even though the music is not as memorable as some of the classic Mario stuff, I still find it quite charming.

Game #2 and #4, the NES games, were interesting to hear about. Wow, Noid has some epic music indeed.

@leahsdad, I had not really considered that as being part of the difficulty problem before, but I do think there is such a thing as having foregrounds and backgrounds too detailed and busy that it disrupts your ability to 'read the terrain,' so to speak. Actually, the layers in this game are not too busy, but what compounds the problem is the fact how critical it is to know every little slope. The end result of your race is very sensitive to the smallest movements.

Something else I've been thinking about is whether using the d-pad to tilt your buggy is a hindrance since often you want to make a precise tilt, quickly, to reach a certain angle, and a digital input simply isn't responsive or accurate enough. Analog control could have made the game easier to play, perhaps.

Yes, I can see this game being very enjoyable to play on the 3DS!

(And is it just me, or does anyone else wish the story levels were numbered or at least grouped somehow! Instead you just have to scroll through a long list of names. If I hadn't looked it up online, I wouldn't have known how many levels I had cleared through!)
