General Gaming / Freeloader does stuff
« on: December 28, 2005, 06:42:06 AM »
Hello.  Hello!

I got my FREE GAEM yesterday, Naruto Gecko Ninja Fries 4, and of course the freeloader too (and a lik-sang lanyard, AND a $5 lik-sang coupon!!!!!!!).  I got a mammory curd 1019 for christmas cuz I figured I'd need a different memory card for JPNZ saves- I'd use my 1019 for all my FREEDOM games and and my old 251 for my omega-ninja-iwata games.  All I'd lose is my F-Zero data, because for some crap-head reason that file is too stubborn to move, be copied, or even be tricked into saving on another card.  ANYWAY.

So today I booted up my Narutos, and was perplexed to see that the auto-save function had been turned back off.  It didn't register that I had the wrong memory card in.  So I turned it back on and saved.  I shut the game off, and saw that HOLY SH the grey memory burger is in, not the black one!  I was shitting myself as I booted to the GC menu, but I was surpised when I saw that my Naruto save was sitting there neatly next to all my other saves.  On both cards.  Scratching my head, I opened up my Freeloader booklet, and it says that when saving a Japanese game, all your MONARCHY and FREEDOM files should be balteeded.  But lo!  This is not the case!

It's version 1.06 B.  The silly wickets over in England are still packaging the version 1.0 manual, so that must be the explanation to this mystery.  So I just thought I'd let you all know that it seems the Freeloader is magic and lets you save without formatting things with the stuff and things.

Also, I am not responsible for anything bad that ever happens to you, ever.

I wrote entirely too much for a post no one is going to read~

Reader Reviews / Nintendo WiFi Connection
« on: December 07, 2005, 01:57:47 PM »
Nintendo WiFi Connection is a new series for the Nintendo DS.  Since November of 2005 there have already been three entries in the series.  These games appear as minigames in some of Nintendo's flagship titles such as Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World, but Nintendo has also lent out its franchise to thrid parties to put in their games so they can collect on a few meaningless sales.  Franchise whoring?  I think so.  This is a review of the version of NWC found in the recent joke of a game, Mario Kart DS.

First of all, it's ridiculous that Nintendo is forcing users to buy extra hardware in order to unlock these games.  When I buy a game, I want to be able to enjoy the whole thing from the start.  This is only a ploy to make more money, and Nitnendo needs to be told that consumers will NOT buy extra hardware in order to enjoy a game.

Then, on top of that, they make this game ridiculously easy to get into!  The learning curve is zero minutes.  If Nintendo wants to shake their tiku tiku tiku!  image, they need to start making difficult games again.  I remember being challeneged by Nintendo's games on the SNES, but this?  No wonder only babies buy Nintendo hardware!

But once you do get into it, some of the later levels become horrendously hard.  Not because the stages themselves are harder, but because they employ cheap tricks to make the gameplay longer.  You can't select which users you want to play with, the computer does that for you, which is fine in the easier "Worldwide" or "Regional" levels, but once you get to the "Friends" modethese flaws only exagerates the dated gameplay.  Often times the game will match you and your friends in odd combinations that don't follow any sort of logic, and it's easy for an unwanted friend to log on and screw up your plans.  Often there are invisible minibosses called "errors" that come outta nowhere to ruin your fun.  You can't predict when they're coming, who they'll attack, and once they do you can't do anything about it.  All of these things come together to form a very frustrating gameplay structure that leaves me scratching my head.

Graphics: 2/10
No 3D, what is this 1978?  Nitnendo needs to grow up.

Sound: 4/10
Catchy tune, but no customizable track list.

Control: 5/10
I have to decide between touch-screen controls or the D-Pad.  Make up your mind Nintendo.

Gameplay: 1/10
Cheap and frustrating tactics are used only yo make the game longer, errors are very common and the player is totally helpless against them.  The CPU controlled friends selection leads to baffling results.

Lastability: 10/10
You'll never beat it becuase you'll throw it in the garbage before you're done.

Final Score (not an average): 10/10
Very fun!

I suggest we change it to: "What do you think of the Nintendo Revolution controller?" and only have two answers- "Good" and "Bad."

Make sure to keep track of who votes what so we know who to ban afterwards as well.

General Chat / Hardcore Gamer Magazine
« on: August 03, 2005, 09:48:42 AM »
Yeah, so i recieved my first free issue today.  Maybe I shouldn't say first, since it could be the only, I honestly don't remember what I signed up for.  I don't care, it's free.

I have to say though, this is shaping up to be a really great gaming magazine.  The first thing I notcied was that the paper was of really high quality.  I like that.  Upon flipping through the pages I was amazed at the number of ads!  There weren't many at all!  There's actually quite a bit of text in this thing, that's always a good sign!  And the text is good!  WOW.  EXCLAMATION POINT?

They really do have a lot of good content in there.  From what I read, it's pretty unbiased too.  It's only the first issure though, so we can't look at any trends or whatnot, but I didn't get the same biased feeling I got when reading Gamepro or Game Informer (both for free of course ).  The writers seem to actually know what they're talking about.

While they did give Killer 7 a 2.5 or something, I was very pleased to see that the reviewer stressed the fact that the game is not for everyone.  As a whole the review was kinda bad, but I was at least happy that the reviewer didn't just sack the game from the start.  He made it obvious that you could very well end up liking the game.

Anyone else get this?  I don't know if the free thing is still going on, but if you're looking for a gaming magazine that doesn't suck, this could very well be what you're looking for.  Also, never ever get Gamepro, even if it is free.  That thing is just trash.

General Chat / Another weak homework help thread

Anyone know of good sources for game publisher financial data?  I mean, there are obvious places for stock statistics and recent quarterly losses/gains, but I'm looking for something a little broader.

Specifically, I'd like to know yearly financial data for EA and Nintendo.  I'd also like to know how much each company is worth, and how much of the market each one controls ("EA games sales make up 99% of all games sold in blah blah).

Basically, sales data that's compiled in order to impress or wow the reader  EA and Nintendo are the most important comapnies I'm looking at, but having data for other leading publishers like Ubisoft or SCE or SE or whatever couldn't hurt.  Ideally, I'd love direct links to articles or pages, but any push in the right direction would be appreciated.

General Chat / I-Sketch is up the rivah!
« on: August 05, 2004, 06:58:17 PM »
Hay doods, time to put down that counterstrike and play a REAL interweb game.  It's called iSketch  and it's makin' WAVES.

What iSketch equals is a game played over wordl wide web technology.  You're given a word, and you draw it! =o  The others, which will be you someday, try to guess the word.  Points = get, get = win.  Simple?  Yes.  Hard?  A little.  END DISCUSSION.

Now, most of the time it's the pietriots chillin in the "computer games" room (where you draw computer/video games).  But we've decidied that it'd be rad to invite the PGC commuity to play along.  So if you're online and in the neighborhood stop by for  your daily reccommended dosage of hilarity.

We usually play around 11:30 PM EST here in the states, which is 1:30 PM there in Australia.  But our schedule seems to be pretty flexable, seeing as how we do nothing most of the time.  So if you want to set up an isketch get together just tell us the time and we'll try to be there.  And if computer games or whatever we're in is full, you can always make your own "PGC" room or something.

I have made this thread.  It is mine.  I call it.  But I will share it with you.

First off, let's play a little game.  First, I will name a Proper Noun in the vicinity of that chair over by the window. *points to hat*  Then, you will take the first letter of the word, make it go upside-down and put it at the end, and take the now-second-to-last-and-one-before-that letters and put them in front.  And an -ly to the end.  Now yell the results into the nearest person's ear, and post here the third to last word they said, even if they said less than three words.  Then the next person does the same thing with that word and so-on.  IT NEVER ENDS. you can eat whatever you want! like lemon rhinos and grape skins!

Next, I will name a country:  Mauritania.  Now it's your turn.

This thread will also be used for Snake and Bake to post everything he feels like.  No need to create new threads, when  have this thread to mesh all of your ideas into one foul tastnig liquid candy-bar.  And if you want to be moderator for this thread, I hereby over-rule authority and give you permission to do so.

Well, we are finally getting are new car! with an entertainment package built right in!  I will finally be able to play GC on those long boring trips to Canada/Grandma's/next door!

I've looked around and found a few car lighter adaptors, and I've found a few.  Now, I usually don't ask about quality of products or anything, but this is an exception (not sure why.....)

For people who have experience with or purchased one of these products, what brand would you reccomend and where did you buy it? (I don't see one on nintendo.com which leads me to believe they don't make a first-party one. :\)

Thanks even if I get no replies!

And now I will tell you a brief history of my life at the PGC forums.
________________________________________________________

When I first came here, I was known as "KnowsNothing" and I am currently under the name of "KnowsNothing."  This was my first and only forum at the time, and to this day, it is the only one I post in more than once a month.

When I first came here, I was unfamiliar with the terminology.  People often used the word "thread" but for a while the definition had eluded me.  But as I progressed in my PGC career, I learned what not only what "thread" meant, but also some essential acronyms such as: LOL, LMAO, ROTFL, BTW, OMG, OMFG, IMO, WTF and some others, I'm sure.

My first avatar was one of Homestarrunner, a popular "no-arms wiley" from the hilarious flash site www.homestrrunner.com.  But that one was soon replaced by a lovely message stating "I like to steal bandwidth from others." I then was avatar-less for a while, until I got my next avatar off of some hosting site.  Some people may remember this avatar as "GIR riding a piggy"

After the hosting site went down, I got smartness and opened an Angelfire account.

I had my fair share of posting in multiple sections and pointless threads, but since then I seem to have gotten…umm…better.

When I was starting to get bored around here, I joined in the wacky-crazy-loonyness that is the Aussie thread.  Since then, I have become a regular poster there.  I have accumulated most of my posts in the Aussie thread and General Chat.  I am now legally insane.  Thank you, the Aussies.

Often times, I have encountered many problems and error messages on my computer.  When this happened, I would turn to the town drunkard, Grey Ninja, for help.  He has helped me on numerous occasions, and also has inspired me to purchase Xenogears and Metal Gear Solid for my PS, both of which I am happy with.  He is also the reason I got Morrowind to work on my crappity-crap PC.  Thanks you stupid drunk jerk.

I often PM people about the size of their avatars.  Most people thank me for this and change them quickly.  Only once have I been flamed by another person, and that person happened to be a “VIP.” Since then, I have not seen this VIP post.  I think I scared her away.  Tee-hee.

Throughout my stay here, I have a more sophisticated taste in videogames, and I am now a big fan of anime.

Other stuff happened too.

_____________________________________________________

The reason I have stuck with PGC is the reason most people despise it.  The mods.  I welcome the mods and think they do a great job keepinf the forums clean.  People say this site is strict, but it makes it more fun to visit.  I don’t want to see huge banner avatars that take up the whole screen, and I don’t want stupid racist punks swearing at me in “AOL talk.”

I like the number of members, too.  People say that it’s small, but it creates a sense of community that I really like.  When I visit other forums I feel like an outsider, but from day one I felt welcome here.  I think it may be the color scheme.  The forums may not be too active, but that makes me look forward to any new posts.

I plan on staying here and continuing to post regularly and I hope I can bring my post count up well into the thousands.  And in the words of PIAC,

“I WILL SAY SOMETHING USEFUL ONE DAY.”

~Thank you~

P.S.  I know I promised a song, but my friend with the microphone has decided to take a little vacation to New Hampshire.  I’ll get the song up ASAP, but I don’t have a clue when that will be.

General Chat / Learning Japanese
« on: August 21, 2003, 04:58:35 PM »
I have decided to learn Japanese at some point in my life.  Since I know we have few Japanese speaking people on the boards I have a few of questions.

1)  What's the best way to start?  A book, or an actual class with students, teachers, and nerds?

2)  Difficulty.  Everyone says it will be hard.  Right now, I have to take a language in school.  My choices were Spanish, or French.  I took, and now hate, Spanish.  I don't hate Spanish because I don't understand, not counting to people who already knew some Spanish, I was the best in my class.  I am pretty confident of my language learning abilities, but will two languages, one being Japanese, confuse me and/or overload my brain causing me to explode?  If that is the case, I can pretty much forget learning Japanese until about, 4-5 years, because no school around here teaches it.  Once I get to high school, I’m ditching Spanish for Latin.

3)  My age.  I am currently 13 years old, 14 all the way in January.  I know asking if I’m too young isn’t really an important question because I could be a really smart little kid, with a knack for picking up languages, or I could be a really dumb thirteen year old who just discovered Japan wasn’t the same as China.  Who knows?  But that’s what I’m asking anyway, am I too young?

Well, what do you guys think?  I’m not going to solely go by what you say, though, because I’m going to give it a try anyway.  I really just want to know what to expect.

General Chat / KnowsNothing's short story.
« on: August 21, 2003, 09:17:08 AM »
I wrote a story.  Here goes.

There once was a polar bear.  This particular polar bear’s name was Lupas.  One day, Lupas was hungry.  He wanted fish, Lupas likes fish.  So Lupas went to the nearby babbling brook.  But since the brook was frozen over, it did not babble.  This made Lupas sad.  Lupas was sad.  Lupas broke through the ice with his little paw and looked around for some fish.  There was only one.  Lupas swung at the fish with his little paw.  He missed and fell into the water.  Silly bear!

But Lupas wasn’t sad, he new he could do it if he tried harder.  Just then, Lupas had an idea.  He quickly fetched some bamboo and string to make a fishing pole.  He dipped the string into the water and waited.  And waited, and waited, and waited until Lupas saw a mistake he had made.  There was no bait.  Lupas looked and looked but did not find any worms.  This made Lupas explode.  Silly bear!

                                                                                   The End
