TalkBack / Re: Kimishima Discusses Wii U, Importance of Nintendo Account
« on: December 03, 2015, 06:05:33 PM »
While there was nothing specifically surprising, reading the Time interview was very comforting.  Kimishima has a good mix of daring and conservatism, similar to Iwata.  His focus seems to be on creating a new generation of leaders in the company that understand what makes Nintendo unique, so they can adapt and grow into the changing market without losing their identity in the process.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Any Chance the NX will support 4K?
« on: November 17, 2015, 12:14:39 PM »
I hadn't even considered 4K, but I agree with the group that it's possible for video and menus, but not reasonable for most games.  I don't think the resolution is particularly problematic or power defying.  Rather, video hardware even now for PCs is based on rendering lower resolutions, so everything past around 1920x1200 is very inefficient.  We should have a generational leap soon.

Despite not having a 4K TV or monitor yet, I would prefer to pay the small price difference to have that option in the future.  Even having Miiverse, etc. in 4K would look substantially nicer, and it would be more useful for video streaming as well.

This is so sad and unexpected.  He was such a pleasure to watch and he revealed a lot of himself in Iwata Asks.  A very endearing and genuine man that will be missed.

(Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition) Miss, you will.

(Bravely Second: End Layer) With that cute face, she can get away with mrgr.
(Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight)  I'm not taller.  Your bottom half is just missing.
(Just Dance 2016)  Future warfare, as predicted by the 80s.
(Return to PopoloCrois) Without the queen to guide us, we just look in random directions and worry.
(Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson) With all the battle roles take by women, men were left to operate the cameras.
(Skylanders) Donkey Kong, far from familiar lands and family, loses his sense of morality and returns to kidnapping women and murdering with barrels.
(Stella Glow) Like a ball of yarn unraveling, the music is lost from Stella's heart.

Another great interview.  Thanks!

I kind of felt sorry for him.  He seemed to feel the need (or corporate requirement) to defend the last game, but the only way to sell this one is to acknowledge how many things needed fixed or scrapped.  I hope that it turns out well.

(Typoman) Hooked on demonics.
(Extreme Exorcism) If a ghost can hold a gun, I can cut it.  If I can cut it, it can bleed.  If it can bleed, I can kill it.
(forma.8) The gritty Magic School Bus reboot is coming along nicely.
(Freedom Planet) Don't shoot until you see the whites of their nonsensically large eyes.
(Lovely Planet) That's not a moon.  That's an ice cream cone.
(Mutant Mudds Super Challenge) You may want us to think that you're a tough guy, but you wear your heart on your sleeve.
(RIVE) Videogame logic also made you a gruff and bald stereotype.  Let's buck the cliche and use this light to develop our vacation photos.
(Runbow) Our ritual sacrifice was chosen at random.  It has nothing to do with you being a creepy skeleton.
(Soul Axion) Even on a lonely night, I can't bring myself to use these hands.

I know only the first counts, but I thought it would be fun to try them all.

1

Nintendo's return to the love hotel business take an unsettling turn.

2

Mr. Kondo and Mr. Miyamoto volunteer at a local orphanage, delighting a young maracas player.

3

Mario Galaxy pioneered the "girlfriend mode," but Yoshi's new title is the first with a grandma mode.  With only a knitting needle and ball of yarn, she can join in the fun.  She's really helping!

4

For the sake of pragmatism, Nintendo has decided to sell Amiibos by the basket directly to scalpers.

5

With just a turn of the base, you can easily change this gadget from a Skylander into an Amiibo.  Previous editions allowed the ability to change from a Cabbage Patch Kid into a Guitar Hero controller, or from a Tomogatchi into a Pog.

I actually like the idea of Goku in Smash Brothers, apart from all the history behind it.  Of the staffer's choices, I think Birdo and Mike Jones would be the most interesting to play.  Birdo's Amiibo could vibrate.

Maybe they are doing a redesign and have more white ones in inventory to get rid of.  I am curious to see what they have in mind and if the Gamepad is also changed.

263
I am impressed with the contestants that they were able to get.  This could be very fun to watch.

After finishing ALBW, I was hungry for more Zelda, so I played Minish Cap on 3DS.  I found it very difficult to go back to the play style and pacing.  The combat is relatively clunky and there is a ton of filler.  On the bright side, it has a great art style and decent dungeons.  Like the painting mechanic in ALBW, the shrinking mechanic gives the world more depth. I would probably like the game much more if I played it when it launched.

TalkBack / Re: Top 10 3DS Games: Three Years and Running
« on: March 30, 2014, 02:38:35 PM »
I agree that Super Mario 3D Land doesn't belong near the top at this point, with so many great games available, but I definitely didn't hate it.  It felt like a random assortment of small disconnected levels more than a cohesive game.  Still, there were some fun moments and the graphics were impressive.

I have never played a Phoenix Wright game, so this was a good reminder to watch for Dual Destinies sales.

Looks like a good game to pick up on a Steam sale.

TalkBack / Re: Physical Games vs. Digital Games: The Face-Off
« on: February 19, 2014, 02:29:31 PM »
Good points in the article and talkback for both sides.  I have been an advocate of digital downloads for a long time on the PC.  Going back to games from the 80s, digital versions are generally still easy to use and games with a big enough fanbase even get extra mods and upgrades over time.  Plus, with digital, I can play on any PC I have, and move the game to upgraded PCs with minimal hassle.  Steam sales also give the equivalent of used game pricing for digital goods.

With Nintendo consoles, I feel the opposite.  I don't trust that my games will transfer or continue to be supported.  With physical copies, as long as I have a functional console, my games will work.  If it breaks, I can buy repair parts or get a used one and all my games will still work.  That, coupled with the ability to loan or borrow and buy used, means that physical is what I choose most of the time.

Great job on the interviews.  I am skeptical about the quality of these games, but will keep an open mind, particularly with the 3DS version.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct: Planting the Seeds of Concern

I am excited to try out the Chibi Robo game that this site reported on when it came out in Japan.  I had forgotten about it, but the Gamecube game was very charming and fun.  This new one looks to be smaller in scale, but still quirky and interesting.

The Hyrule Warriors game just made me sad.  It looks super generic and bland, like a student project, and I'm worried that the Zelda franchise is going to be as heavily milked as Mario.  When that happens, people no longer get excited for the next big game in the franchise, because it is lost in the sea of spinoffs.

I didn't realize that Black Couldron was so hated.  I saw it a few years ago and liked it a lot.  It has a unique tone and style that captured my imagination.  I don't plan on getting Infinity, but maybe it would work to make statues/buildings/mountains/weapons/etc. for the lesser known franchises, similar to trophies in SSB.

Wow, that looks pretty fun.  I hope it makes it to the US.

Well said, Spak-Spang.  Nintendo's focus for a while now has been on capturing and distilling the essence of what a Mario game is.  They've come to the conclusion that relatively short, linear levels without any fluff are what Mario games are.  I can't legitimately argue with the creators of the games, but that is not what Mario is in my mind.

Mario games used to be genre-defining, pushing the boundaries of creativity and control.  Now, they are stuck in the past.  It doesn't feel like someone really passionate pushed for their bold vision.  There is no grandness to them, making the whole industry hold their breath to see what Nintendo is going to do next.  They are safe, minimal games that are largely recycling old ideas.  When they make a game, I would rather they not feel so confined by the past and some strict concept of what a Mario game is.  To me, a Mario game should inherently be willing to break the rules.

274
It would be nice if they offered them as online exclusives.  The retail partners have online stores, and some probably have "special order" systems for those who want to buy it at the retail location and pick it up later, similar to buying a non-stocked specialty lamp at Walmart.

I have no idea how retail works, but the special editions can be very enticing if I am on the fence.

I am with you on 3D Land, Evan_B, and I am also a Shine Brother.  That game did have camera issues in a few areas and Yoshi was a mess, but otherwise was fantastic.
