Nintendo Gaming / Re: Three... Weeks... 'til Switch day!!!
« on: February 17, 2017, 01:26:01 PM »
I'm starting to think we're all jaded and we'll be at some party and 1-2 Switch will be at the center.

Never underestimate party ****. I play board games regularly.

While I don't see 1-2-Switch being meaty enough to last long at a party, it would be nice to see some board game styles as low cost digital titles.  With just the Switch, you have a screen and two wireless "buzzers," which is more than enough for games like Taboo.

This thread is entertaining.  It is nice to see you after hearing you in the interview.

I can't disagree with anything you say, even if I've been trying to convince myself otherwise.  The sad thing is that I like quirky and creative Nintendo.  This just isn't a positive form of it.  It doesn't present well, looking far too much like the Wii mini-game collections that made people so cynical and ended the Wii's impressive lifespan with a deadening thud.  The idea of bringing back motion controls for mini-games as a selling point right at the beginning just feels tone-deaf, while they are getting some other big things right.

The game makes Wii Sports and Nintendo Land look like Mozart.  People called Wii Sports a collection of tech demos, but 1-2-Switch is what that actually looks like.  It works to show off some controller features, similar to the AR card games on the 3DS, but that is all.  Even if it came on the system, I don't see many people spending more than 10-20 minutes fooling around with it.  That is one bright side -- if you spend $50 on it, you are more likely to give all the experiences a try and force it on your friends.  A pack-in is easily forgotten.

They mixed up the "accessories" and "console" signs. #mildlyinfuriating

TalkBack / Re: No New Skylanders Game This Year

It is a fun series that made Amiibo cool before they existed.  We don't need a new one every year, but similar to Guitar Hero or Dance Central, I hope it gets updated or reinvented periodically.

Great reviews.  Thanks!  I am going to be consumed with Zelda soon, but I really hope this gets yet another port to Switch.  It is the perfect sort of game for home/mobile play, and the screen would do the art style more justice.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Is Zelda Wii U gonna suck?
« on: February 08, 2017, 02:53:27 PM »
Not a racist, but I expected this thread to be about issues with the Wii U version specifically.  I decided to buy a Switch, but hopefully the Wii U version doesn't have long load times and pop-in because the Switch version became the focus.

My main concern is that the world will feel too empty.  I also hope that there is a streamlined way to handle side missions, since there will likely be a ton. However, as Assasin's Creed shows, quality is better than quantity.  It is easy for side missions to all fall into a couple categories and almost feel randomly generated.  Oh, and also, no timed missions.  I don't want to keep repeating a jaunt across the map because the soup got cold.

132
While a mild spoiler, it does tell us that we will face a (likely spirit) version of Ganon early in the game, which would have been a nice thing to be surprised by.

133
That was great.  Thanks.  It is interesting to see how different people people perceive the Pro controller and if it is needed.  Like you, the price is putting me off getting it at launch.  I hope the Joy-Con work well for Zelda.

I'm looking forward to the Japanese publishers shifting their resources to the Switch as the 3DS gently finishes its lifecycle.  The 3DS was great, but the Switch offers so much more.

This is one of those conflicts in game design.  In a traditional RPG, you have the choice of running ahead and using a sophisticated strategy to stay alive, or to grind and buy lots of potions.  Either way is fine, as long as the player is having fun.  Something your post reminded me of is the tendency to put powerful weapons at the end of the game, or even as a post-game bonus.  At that point, it has little meaning because the game is over.  If there is something similar in BotW, I hope they drop the breadcrumbs early and allow a devoted player to track down everything needed from the start.

135
I dunno... I watched the entire run of Sailor Moon, does that help?

I think you are more than qualified, and a gentleman of fine taste.

136
It would only be acceptable if they include a 3DS cartridge slot.

137
What I would like is to be able to go out exploring and find a shrine or whatever that is far beyond my current abilities, but work to get through it anyway.  This is similar to the "true" 3D Mario games, where creative platforming can allow navigation to almost anywhere on a stage in any order.  It is much more fulfilling to make choices like that than to have artificial difficulty levels (enemies take more hits, less health, etc.).

138
I enjoyed it.  It is very low key and relaxed in pace, similar to the original.  The only thing that made me a little uncomfortable was that it leaned more heavily into the "what it's like to be a teen girl" theme.  But, aren't we all teen girls on the inside?

Metroid has a unique place in Nintendo's IP.  I don't think it needs to be expanded, but it could be updated and improved.  Games like Federation Force don't need the IP.  If it doesn't make the game better or act as much leverage for sales, then it is only watering down the brand.  People were happy with the pinball game, if only because it was so good and sci-fi series are traditionally turned into pinball games.

An open world Metroid on an alien planet could be awesome.  It would actually be closer to the feeling I originally had with Metroid, similar to BotW recapturing the feeling of exploration that was largely in our imaginations in the original Zelda.  I don't want to get my hopes up, though.  A traditional 2D Metroid would still be fun.

140
Hmm, I didn't have that issue, but I did find the controls in Skyward Sword inconsistent.  It is funny how differently people experience games.  I guess the positive is that the Wii had such a diverse selection of niche games that most of us have good memories from them.

141
Dungeons are my favorite part of Zelda games, but the shrines just sound like a way of spreading similar gameplay out.  Walking through the large landscapes and finding an entrance sounds exciting.  Having it on a portable device is perfect for exploration.  I will probably want it docked for big story moments.

142
You may be right.  I did not give the games you mentioned a chance, because they didn't appeal to me based on what I read and saw about them.  I guess my kind of niche third party games for the Wii were Z&W and Another Code: R.  I did try (and buy) many others, including some listed by Phil, but ultimately found them to be lower quality imitations of games on other platforms or conceptually good with lacking execution.  For me, the Wii was primarily a Nintendo console, and it was worth it for that.

They could have a big Mario landscape and only that if they plan to make that their new E3 style and instead give most of their information through Directs.  It might be wise to show third party support (if they have it), since the lineup now is very sparse.  It would also be a good time to introduce some alternative Joycons or other hardware news.

Pokemon Stars is the perfect distraction from an otherwise slow start in gaining support.  I don't see myself buying it, since I already have Moon, but it will surely sell well.

144
Rock Band 3 was a lot of fun with family.  Nice purchase.  My non-gamer Wii franchise find was Just Dance.  That series, which I made fun of for a long time because of the IGN reviews, works for party games and is still one of the best ways to get a dynamic cardio workout.  The Kinect became the ideal way to play (and also has Dance Central, which is more like Rock Band), but the Wii was where it started.

Otherwise, there aren't many third party games that stand out.  Zack & Wiki was one of the more memorable.

Reading your comments about people who aren't into videogames or Nintendo devices wanting the Switch reminds me of the Wii.  I was also thinking about pricing with the Wii, and how common thinking before the price reveal was that it would be $199 maximum because of the technology involved.  But, Nintendo hit just the right price point.  Maybe their market research is again correct, even if the pricing of the 3DS and Wii U were mistakes.

The main difference is that the Wii had a game to evangelize people bundled in in the United States.  Mario Kart and Minecraft would make nice games for that, and maybe enough people will buy them for it to work.  An issue might be core Nintendo fans buying it and only Zelda for a while.

The biggest strength of the Switch is that it is a portable.  Its downfall might be that it is marketed as a console.

146
I hope the Fire Emblem Echoes game comes to Switch.  I have a 3DS, but the resolution is low and I don't want to carry around two handhelds (three counting my phone, and I've just stopped using my tablet).

Marketing the Switch as a console allows Nintendo to more reasonably sell their big titles at $60, even if it is more handheld than console in the traditional sense.  Bundling it with a standard controller would have helped sell the illusion more.  If they keep releasing games with high production values and large scope like Zelda and Mario, I don't mind.  The 3DS is the low end alternative with a great library.

Speaking of that, it would be cool if Nintendo release a Joycon in the future with a D-pad and a 3DS cartridge slot... a Super 3DS.

147
Either way, here in the real world, it's inelegant and makes me think they just couldn't figure out how to have it integrated into the console itself.

Yep.  On the bright side, they do have a free period to convince us if they have actually created a good online system with enough content to pay for.  The main people paying for it might be hardcore Splatoon players.

148
Still not sure if I will keep my preorder or wait for a price drop, but I think I'll just wait until then regardless for Zelda instead of getting it on Wii U.  The other certainty is Mario, which is the game I am most excited for.  Xenoblade might actually be an option, since it is portable and I can play during breaks at work.  Otherwise, nothing interests me until MK8 hits $20, unless that is also when MK9 comes out.  Pokemon is likewise not a game I want to buy twice.

I look forward to the eventual flood of 3DS developers announcing games.

149
Correct, Ian.  The store is accessible without a paid account.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that!

Also, it would suck to be a seagull.
