I completely agree, my Mop it up friend.

@ broodwars

Wow. That's saddening. Ah well.  Maybe I'll pick it up for the PS5 someday as part of Capcom's "we're sorry for these games" package =P

@ Insanolord

Ah yea, that's right.  hmm, I could see that getting annoying.  They should have had it randomly boot  up with a "corrupted" screen every 1/5 of the time.  That would have been a nice solution.

@ Ceric

I completely agree.  It's amazing how as technology has gotten more powerful and budgets have gotten exponentially larger, that glitches have actually gone UP in frequency.  It's a sign of an industry that is trying to be bigger that its legs can support.  If they just slowed things down, they could be walking tall.  Instead many sprint towards fractured tibias.

.... metaphorically speaking. =P

878
@ broodwars

Man, that's such a shame! I hold Capcom in high regard but they sure had a rough patch in '09-'10 between Dark Void, Bionic Commando and (some might say) RE5.

Think there was a specific reason they had to rush on Dark Void?

Also, what does "platinum-ed" mean? Is that like when a game is done and it goes "gold"?

879
Yea, I've heard Dark Void Zero was the more enjoyable title in the series =P I just got a DSi (XL) last week so maybe I'll look into it!

Isn't there even a sound of someone blowing in a cartridge before you start? Or am I thinking of another game?

@ broodwars

Was it just a matter of not taking care of glitches or would it still be disappointing if it all worked perfectly?

880
YO!  I was out of town so ... I know fewer people will see/read this but... here are my responses to another highly enjoyable episode!

1. NPC chatter in FPSs is just stupid.  I think developers are starting to get too "cute" with the phrases and its turning their own games into (even bigger) jokes.

2. I have loved each WayForward game I've played! Like a concerned parent, I hope they're making money and getting by OK.

3. To me, episodic gaming is yet another misstep in the wonderful (read: awful) world of DLC.

4. I never beat Ninja Gaiden 1 w/o save states.  But I did own Ninja Gaiden II back in the day and played it so much I could beat it relatively easily. (heavy emphasis on "RELATIVELY").

5. It's nice that Kotaku is providing some interesting content.  Too bad the site on the whole is too toxic for me to ever set foot on again!

6. OpRainfall....

6A. whoa, whoa, whoa.  back the truck up. *beep*beep*beep* ... OK, let's say Nintendo no longer knows how to market "core" games.  Here are two MASSIVE variables that were not being considered in that statement:

First, gamer tastes have changed.  Nintendo doesn't do a lot of dude-bro FPS or violent "realistic" games like Assassin's Creed.

That's what's popular now from the "hardcore" perspective.  Clean, respectable protagonists bopping around zapping aliens without cussing or shooting up steroids don't sell like they used to.

Second, any "core" Wii game faces a severe uphill battle in that gaming media is not going to help them out.  Game isn't in HD? That's 1-2 points right off the top of the review score.  Game uses any amount of this new fangled motion whutsits? It's automatically not for the "hardcore". Sad? Yes. Stupid? Yes. True? Yes.

6B. Yea, the Walmart crowd wound up being the Wii's bread and butter.  But that's because, as I said, the gaming market has shifted to this "m for mature" style and so Nintendo went blue ocean to keep from finishing 3rd place again.  Try not to blame them because the expanded audience actually liked gaming enough to make it a successful move.

6C. I do agree that, if sales considerations are the problem, Nintendo is acting like the foolish third parties who don't support the Wii and then complain that there are no sales.

7. Jet packs, grappling hooks and MegaMan 6 are awesome.

I was soooooo excited about Dark Void.  I still plan to play it someday.  I bet I'll like it.

8. I have all the ZoE games but I have yet to play even one of them! I know I will someday thoroughly enjoy them!

9. Loved the first MGS.  Haven't been motivated to play the rest of them.  Though I have an especially high tolerance/affinity for both ninjas and cutscenes so I bet I would be a good target for the rest of the franchise.
.... though I do have a compulsion to understand plots so.... hrm.

@broodwars

1. The whole reason I didn't need your input is because you largely contribute general exaggerations coupled with negativity to conversations.  So that was an attempt to avoid unnecessary conflict.

2. You're not really fighting me when all I have to do is use your own words against you.

3. I'm hanging out on a forum dedicated to my current favorite gaming company.  You're hanging out on a forum dedicated to a company you are currently "done with."  Who's more likely to start conflicts?

4. Are the karma scores gospel truths? Nope.  But they sure ain't random.

@ NWR_Neal

That makes sense.  But there's two problems with using that logic in this case...

1. His comments are never tempered with these phantom acknowledgements of past quality.  It's only when pressed like this that he shows any affinity for these games.

2. If you only like a band's older material, why hang out on a forum that will largely be discussing stuff you "don't give a crap about"?

EDIT:

@broodwars

I do want to give both of us credit for having our discussions without resorting to name calling or cussing.  That shows a maturity from you that is very rare on the internet, especially among gaming communities.  I genuinely do appreciate that from you!

@everyone

I'm heading to bed now .... gonna be out of town for the next week.  Sooooo ... I'll sign on when I can.  But I have to go for now!

Happy 4th, everyone!

Honestly? No. You make it pretty hard to comprehend that you are anything but, for lack of a better term, a big ol' sourpuss.  If these were all important concepts for folks (like myself) to know about you, you should try voicing them.

This is why I feel confident in my assessment that what you say is either conveniently general or outright contradictory.

Let's see what we have:

-You like old Nintendo stuff.
-This generation's Nintendo makes you swear a blue streak.
-Yet, you like the Wii's virtual console service.
-But, not really any of it's modern games.
-Yet, "part of you" will always like even current Nintendo offerings.
-Yet, you find those offerings to be formulaic and thus, extremely frustrating.
-Also, because of 3 JRPGs (probably) not coming to America, you are swearing off their products for the present and foreseeable future.

It is this lack of specificity and self-contradiction that necessitates several posts to communicate anything other than outright hatred.

This is why I was warned about no one else but you when I started actively posting here, this is why your karma rating might be the worst I've seen, and this is why I didn't need your 1 cent (2 might be generous) regarding my thoughts.

erm, uh... so, we're forgetting about all this then?

You know what?  **** them.  I'm done with this B.S.  I don't have to put up with nonsense like this on my other consoles, and Wii owners shouldn't have to put up with it here.  They shouldn't have to hack their Wiis to play these games just because Nintendo of America's leadership is incompetent.  I like this site; the podcasts; and my fellow readers/listeners here, but I'm done with supporting Nintendo this generation and the next if they're going to treat their customers this way.

@ broodwars

Dude... we get it.

As I said from the start, there's not much point to your input.  Go back and read what you write.  Your thoughts are either conveniently general or outright contradictory.  The latest development is that apparently you think people who do enjoy Nintendo products are some kind of blind zombie/lemming hybrid that both thinks Nintendo can do no wrong, but have also not played their games in years.

...

Your only constant is that you're not a fan of Nintendo, and that concept is too mundane to need reminders every few minutes. ... we get it.

@ broodwars

So you're confident the "casual" gamer won't be playing.  And you're confident the "hardcore" gamer is now alienated.  But you're not, in any way, implying that Nintendo is doomed - instead, that they will continue "cackling and throwing Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii money in the air."

This is why we didn't need to hear from you... Contradict yourself much?

Plus, are we really supposed to be upset Mario Kart is a successful franchise? Those games rule! Stop mistaking any first party title for being dismissible "casuals" just because the company also makes exercise, brain training and mini games.  Most Nintendo games are the very root of core gaming!  (Core =/= shooters alone.)

Plus, even Nintendo's "casual" games tend to be pretty darn well made! So again, I wouldn't fault them for the general laziness in the genre.

~~~
Ultimately, the biggest reason we didn't need to hear from you ...
You're making the very mistake my post described how to avoid.  You're letting NoA's current actions speak for Nintendo as a whole.  And that makes no sense.  Or did you miss where I said that NoA is clearly being stupid? I guess I did word it sort of confusingly....
NoA? Currently really, really, really stupid.
Now, just to be clear, folks...
All our disappointment and rage should be aimed squarely at NoA.   Not Nintendo in general.
People who are like "Why would anyone even bother with the Wii U!? Nintendo doesn't care anymore! They're gonna act like this forever!" are being a bit silly.
These games are being developed for NINTENDO platforms.  These games are going to be published, in English, for NINTENDO platforms.
As much as NoA is dropping the ball here, Nintendo of Japan is killin' it for allowing these games to get made and Nintendo of Europe is killin' it for getting them localized.
In the past few years, I've played some of the most interesting and niche titles of my life on the Wii - in English, in America.  2010 was amazing for both 1st and 3rd party games.  These are things that happened.
The idea that NoA is going to be this stupid for the entirety of the Wii U life span? That has not happened, and I don't think 7 months of inactivity logically leads to that conclusion.
To sum,
NoA? Currently really, really, really stupid.
Nintendo as a whole? Still the best in the biz.
Xeno/TLS/Pandora? Look great. I want 'em.  And I for one will be happy, but not surprised, if some or all of them get  eventually NA releases.
Operation Rainfall itself? Never give up!!!
~~~

Alright, that's all, just wanted to clarify.

And, broodwars, you can save yourself the trouble.  We all know you disagree wholeheartedly and that Nintendo is, yet again, doomed.

887
broodwars on S+P2: Agreed.
Luigi Dude on Other M: Strongly Agreed.
ShyGuy on Sony: Thank you.
famicomplicated on life: Strongly Disagreed.

888
I can see it now: Xenoblade clears 200k in the UK because of Americans importing, so a US release gets ordered - then it bombs in NA because everyone bought the import.

hmm, where have I heard that before? =P

Could suck if EU sales are good due to all the importing/modding that will take place without announcements.  Then, NoA announces/releases them stateside but everyone who wanted them already has them!!

PS - Shaymin kicks ass.  One of my favorite Pokémon of all time.  If only I knew how to use him well in online battles so he didn't have to sit the bench all the time =)

PPS - I just got back from Gamestop and saw a little girl with a Shaymin plush tucked under her arm.  Quite cool/adorable.

@ broodwars

I'm sorry this was your last straw with Nintendo.

I guess you won't be hanging around here anymore?

Just wanted to chime in and say: another thoroughly enjoyable episode!

Sadly, I've never played the DK game in question, nor Perfect Dark even though we own the N64 game!
... I'll get around to it eventually.  Sounds fun! I looooove me some stealth!

Oh, and even  having never heard the game's voice acting, that bit with the impressions was hilarious =P

CLONE HIGH IS THE BEST!!

That is all.

892
...if a smaller publisher wanted to take it, they'd probably have to enter negotiations and work out a deal before they are allowed to publish it elsewhere.

I guess I just don't see why that would be so impossible. Right, fellas?

If I remember correctly, Atlus has come forward and said that they would bring one or more of these games over if if Nintendo corporate would let them.  Unfortunately, Nintendo probably owns the publishing rights to these titles outside of Japan.  For another company to publish them in North America, Nintendo has to sell them the publishing rights, and Nintendo probably doesn't want to do that in case these titles actually end up being some kind of hit.  Besides, it would really expose how terrible Nintendo of America's marketing consistently is if Atlus were able to turn The Last Story into a mega-hit in NA when NoA couldn't do that with Metroid Other M and so many other titles this generation.

I can't find anything like that from Atlus.  Linky link?

I don't think NoA is worried about its ability to sell Wii games =P

So you're thinking maybe NoA will just wait and see how they do in EU?
Could suck if EU sales are good due to all the importing/modding that will take place without announcements.  Then, NoA announces/releases them stateside but everyone who wanted them already has them!!

But yea, otherwise, it seems silly that NoA would find these games too niche to sell, but too mainstream to let others sell.

---

In any case, I'm not giving up! Operation Rainfall costs me very little to be part of, and the potential reward is worth it.  Not just for these three games, but for gaming in general.

893
Hey all,

Quick question ...

I've never claimed to understand the complexities of who has the right to publish X if it is developed by Y.  So, can someone detail why a seperate publisher couldn't speak up and offer to publish some or all of these games?

Seems like smaller publishers would kill for the kind of exposure Operation Rainfall has gotten these games.

Thanks in advance!

I think your assessment is very smart.  Keep being smart.

Side note: I did enjoy the PS1 Xenogears.  It's definitely weird and a bit clunky but it was a great game (to me).

@ EVERYONE

Why is no one up in arms about Rodea: The Sky Soldier!?! I want that game in English way more than the JRPGs! ^_^

The core gamer who only owns a Wii has become rare.

Sweet, I am a rarity.
We should start a club. Who's with us?

What would be kinda nice is we founded a Harcore Wii Gamers Club and picked a game for each week and all of did a sort of review or some kind of opionated piece about it before moving onto the next week. For example, we all play No More Heroes 2 and give our thoughts about the game.

You know there is already a place where things like that happen ... hmmm I knew I had a link somewhere.  Now where did I put it?  *cough*signature*cough*
