TalkBack / Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Available Early in Australia
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:16:51 AM »

Australian street date has been broken, mostly.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26970

Recent circumstances have allowed Australian retailers to sell The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D before the official release date in Australia.

Last week Australian retailer Game Traders began selling import copies of the game from the UK. This prompted other outlets such as EB Games and JB HIFI, to announce that they would be selling stock when it arrived.

Retailers will not have stock displayed on the shelves until the official launch date on June 30, but if you go into stores and ask for the game, and it is in stock, they will likely sell it to you.

TalkBack / Miyamoto Talks Wii U, Remakes
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:03:41 AM »

Nintendo's top game designer also hasn't forgotten the Virtual Boy.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26894

In a recent GameSpot interview, Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about various things, ranging from Starfox 64 3D to Nintendo's stance on the Wii U's power and pricing. Below are some points from the interview.

- Miyamoto feels that it was better for Nintendo to simply revamp Starfox 64, instead of making a new one from the ground up. Because it re-introduces the basis of the series to new people, and it was a way for Nintendo to get the game out more quickly.

- The Virtual Boy has not been forgotten by Miyamoto, and he has plans to possibly bring those games back on the 3DS. Although they might not be simple Virtual Console ports.

- On the subject of hardware power and pricing, Miyamoto said that Nintendo is very sensitive to what they price their systems at. They have to strike a balance so that parents are willing to buy the system, but at the same time they have all these technological advances which contribute to the overall cost. He thinks that Nintendo is a company that proberly pays the most attention between the hardware capabilities and the price of it.

- When showing off the Wii U controller to third party developers, Nintendo shows them various examples of how it could be used in games. Nintendo finds that the more they show them, the more it gets their creativity flowing and they start to see how they can implement it into games they currently have in development.

I think a bit of cross platform talk is good, and often times interesting in regards to newscast and RFN. I like hearing about the games from a Nintendo gamers perspective. They often cite things about games that are sometimes overlooked by other gaming outlets, or highlight what Nintendo focused people might either enjoy or not enjoy. It also keeps you in the loop in regards to whats going on in the industry as a whole, thats if you dont listen to multi-platform podcasts.

TalkBack / Luigi's Mansion 2 Preview
« on: June 14, 2011, 12:43:31 AM »

Luigi is back with more ghost busting shenanigans.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/26706

Luigi is once again exploring creepy old mansions, armed with his trusty Poltergust vacuum, bravely sucking up various ghosts and ghouls.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is being developed by Next Level Games, the same developer who has brought us the likes of Mario Strikers Charged and Punch-Out!! for Wii. Players familiar with the original game's mechanic of stunning ghosts by shining your flashlight on them will be interested to know that it has been changed up slightly. You will now also have to activate a strobe/burst effect to stun them and suck them in.

Another new twist is that there are now multiple mansions for Luigi to explore, each with different types of ghosts haunting them. Solving puzzles and exploring these areas will help you open up more of the game. Luigi can now use his vacuum to remove wallpaper to reveal hidden rooms, which more than likely house treasure for you to collect.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is set to release in 2012.

Super Mario Land is a good game, feels a bit janky, but you do get used to its quirks. In fact I finally beat the game the other day for the first time!

General Gaming / Re: Duke Nukem Forever
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:37:07 PM »
I got the 360 version. The game runs pretty well overall for me. There has been a tiny amount of screen tearing, and sometimes the frame rate sputters for a couple of seconds when there are a lot of explosions and enemies of screen.

Gameplay wise, I have to say its better than what I was expecting. I was a little worried after reading peoples thoughts on the demo, but I have found that the demo seems to be far worse than the finished product. Its fun interacting with different objects in the enviroment, and so far has had good variety locations of the levels themselves. The Hive level, reminds you of something from a Metroid game possibly, in terms of looks.

Its not all just shooting over and over again either, the game is broken up with small platforming areas, aswell as some basic puzzle solving. It is also fun to drive the remote controlled cars. I havnt touched the multiplayer yet, but im hearing it is good fun. Controls are fine aswell, I dropped the sensitivity down one notch and has felt pretty good overall.

Btw I wasnt a Duke fan before getting the game, so I have no real nostalgia for the character or Duke 3D. Yes its crude humour and at times over the top, but if it doesnt bother you or you can chuckle at such things every now and then, you will find a fun, colourful FPS, that is in ways a throwback to a time when shooters werent all completely serious and actually offered more to the player than simply killing lots of enemies.

Some elements of the game may seem a little dated, but overall it is enjoyable so far. Try it out, it wont be as bad as many are making it out to be. I may even go download Duke 3D later on.

EDIT: Forgot a major thing that is really bad, and that are the load times. The game takes ages to load the levels, im talking PS1 levels of load times here.

This looks to be at least similar to the original Oot soundtrack released in Japan back in the late 90's. Im pretty sure one exists with the same cover art. I will proberly end up buying this though, cause it doesn't seem like this will happen in Australia.

« on: June 07, 2011, 11:47:06 PM »

Mass Kirby attack incoming!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/26647

Kirby Mass Attack is a new game for the Nintendo DS. The basic premise of the title is that one day an evildoer with magic cane appears and splits Kirby into 10 pieces. He then sets off to return his body back to the way it was.

The gameplay revolves around players using to touch screen to control the mass of Kirbys. Sometimes you will need an exact number of Kirbys to accomplish certain tasks.

You can control the characters in a number of ways. It is possible to flick the stylus to launch a single Kirby into the air, or you can tap a specific point multiple times in order to make your Kirby swarm dash in that direction.

There are a number of medals that are hidden throughout the levels to find, players can also unlock various mini-games aswell.

Kirby Mass Attack is set to release on September 19, 2011.

I kinda get why you can't though. Its ment to be an original Game Boy, it wouldn't make sense to let you do the colour altering.

Something I didnt mention in the article, is that for purists, you can turn the save state function completely off. Then at least its not quite as tempting.

TalkBack / Virtual Console [3DS] Impressions
« on: June 07, 2011, 03:59:56 AM »

Come get your green tinge on!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/26563

The Nintendo 3DS eShop finally launched today, and one of the first things I downloaded, besides the free Pokédex and Excitebike 3D, was Super Mario Land for the original Game Boy.

At first glance, the emulator feels and looks a bit undercooked. The game launches directly to the title screen, so there is no classic Nintendo logo loading screen, and you cannot alter the colours of the game like you could on the Game Boy Color.

However, after consulting the games operation manual, I discovered some nifty additions that are just plain cool. One was surprising, in that they went further than they probably had to.

First, much like original Nintendo DS titles, you can choose to launch the game in its original resolution by holding Start and Select while the game is loading. When I read this, I assumed that it would be a tiny picture on a black screen. It turns out though, that the game screen has a classic Game Boy border around it. So it looks as though you are looking at a Game Boy. The 3D effect also makes it look like the screen is set back a little bit, providing another neat effect that looks like you actually playing the game on a Game Boy. Additionally, the battery light on the Game Boy on the top screen will blink when the system is actually low on batteries.

The other cool addition, is that by holding L and R and tapping the Y button, you can turn on the Game Boy green screen tinge for even more nostalgia.

As we have come to expect with Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, the emulation is excellent and runs perfectly. The game image running at the full screen resolution of the 3DS looks a tiny bit soft, but it shows an improvement when viewing the game at its proper resolution, although it is quite small to look at.

It is now also possible to create a permanent save state, so now you can save your game anywhere you want and return to over and over again.

Overall the 3DS Virtual Gameboy seems to be an excellent emulator, with some cool extra features.

Lame wont connect at all atm. Updated my girlfriends 3DS, then tried the shop but wouldnt load at all.

474
I know this was discussed on RFN some time ago. But, do you guys think its better to play Uncharted 1 first? I ask, because I will be picking up a PS3 soon, and the current deal comes with 5 games, one of those being Uncharted 2. Should I pick up the first one aswell, or dont bother?
