Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 94: My Two Dads
« on: July 21, 2013, 04:08:41 AM »
The kids segment was a pretty fun listen.

I think that kids having trouble with challenge in games such as Mario probably hasn't really changed that much. It may be more apparent because parents nowadays grew up playing the games, so they can more easily gauge a kids success or aptitude for the game.

It also depends heavily on the kids own determination, a lot of kids I used to play with could easily bang their virtual heads against levels over and over again and still have fun, I was like that too. My sister on the other hand used to get very aggrevated whenever she got stuck breifly or when she kept dying, giving up soon after.

I think if you want a kid to get better at games, leaving them alone after some general explanation would probably be a good way to go. A lot of us 80's and 90's kids didn't have a lot of help from mum and dad and were able to pick up the games at a fairly young age, they were also not as user friendly back then either.

TalkBack / Re: EarthBound Listed to Appear on the Wii U eShop Today
« on: July 20, 2013, 07:37:24 PM »
This thread just keeps ticking in the back of my head what Iwata said about the phone market eroding game prices.

Exactly, people don't seem to value the contents of the game anymore. They want 99c-$5 max, regardless of how much content or how great it is.

Just having a digital distribution model shouldn't mean that the prices have to drop to rock bottom. You are meant to be paying for the game, not counting how much it costs the company to distribute. That said, having a selection of games around $2 would not hurt Nintendo.

TalkBack / Re: EarthBound Listed to Appear on the Wii U eShop Today

How many suckers are gonna support these outrageous prices!??

although I'm almost tempted to buy it just out of curiosity. $10.00 is hard to swallow for a NES game though, especially for one I will likely never really play.
Thats a very nice looking NES game :D

NES games... SNES games, whatever.

$10 for a game that is almost 20 years old is just a little much if you ask me.
But this game has been on the most wanted list for so long, that most people wouldn't care if they charged $20. I just hate that Nintendo feels the need to keep the prices on these games so steep when I think these very same games might garner more sales and attention if Nintendo just made a few changes to the Virtual Console in it's entirety. starting with the prices of these games and going all the way to universal access of said games.

Virtual console could be Nintendo's trump card if they only treated it as one service across all Nintendo consoles. But stating this is probably akin to digging up a horse that was already beat to death and then beating it some more. [/rant]

I don't get how people can think that just because something is old, means it should automatically cost less. Do people complain when a movie is released on DVD or Blu Ray for the same price as a new release?

The game costs $10 now, it used to be what, $50-$60 when new?

Some powers from the Wii game Sonic Colors are returning, including the Drill, Rocket and Laser.

The games will be coming to the US on October 22.

Just what is over there behind the curtain?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/34892

As I was growing up, something about video games intrigued me. It was the wonder and mystery about what lay outside of the game's playable area. Just looking at a well-crafted background or a tantalizing view just out of reach was enough to get my mind racing.

I have now compiled some of the more concrete examples that I have been able to hold onto over the years. Sometimes it could simply be a path that disappeared over a hill; the unknown created a way for me to create more complex worlds. Sometimes it allowed me to imagine the games even in a different gameplay context.

So here are five examples of areas or background art that set my mind alight with speculation and wonder. There were more, and not always from the most revered titles, but these seem to be the most memorable.

Sonic the Hedgehog

This was and still is one of my favorite games, the lush visuals and fun levels kept me coming back again and again. The part of this game that I used to find mysterious and intriguing was the background of Green Hill Zone: for some reason I found myself imagining what the world looked like across that water. It's rather silly thinking about it now, as you would likely expect it to look pretty much the same as the levels that are in the game. But, for whatever reason I really like that background image, and who knows, maybe it does hold some secrets.

Pokémon Red and Blue

The one area that stands out the most in the first Pokémon games was just outside of Pallet Town. That fence line showed a bunch of grass that was just out of reach. I used to wonder what lay outside of my view. Could it lead to some secret areas? What about some other towns?  Stronger Pokémon?

The original Pokémon games also let me create a strange 3D version in my head at one point. I wanted to be in the world of the game and the anime more than what was currently available to be played. A concept I imagined to achieve this was to make the game first person, although I still imagined the game with the 8-bit style. A fan-game has actually done this exact idea recently, but I have not been able to try it out; it looks pretty cool though.

Goldeneye

This next one I did not find out about until years after the game released, but I still think it is cool. In the Dam level of Goldeneye if you look over the water with a sniper rifle you can see this unused island, making you wonder what it was for, or what it had on it.

It was originally going to be a part of the level, but was dropped. It is actually possible to go over there if you hack the game. The island features a different styled guard tower and a drone gun.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Aside from the prospect of the Triforce being hidden away in the game somewhere, one of the areas from the game I always wanted to see more of was inside Hyrule Castle. The few glimpses through the windows let me wonder, how big was it inside? What did the King look like? I really wanted to climb through one of those windows and see what’s in there.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

This is easily the biggest tease and the one I imagine many will relate to: seeing the old Hyrule under the ocean. That background/vista was so fantastic that it made you want to go down and explore the old world, it was a massive tease, and the one that I wish was fully fleshed out the most of all. Being a big Ocarina fan, just imagining what the old areas looked like now had me thinking for ages. Why did you do that to us Nintendo?

And there we have it, five of my top backgrounds and areas that inspire creative thoughts. Let us know if you have your own similar reactions in the talkback!

TalkBack / Yarn Yoshi Status Discussed
« on: June 13, 2013, 09:11:05 AM »

Takashi Tezuka gives a brief status update for the game including comments on difficulty.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34628

Nintendo's Takashi Tezuka has briefly spoken about the status of the Wii U Yoshi game, Yarn Yoshi, in a recent interview.

His explanation of why the game was absent this week was that it is not in a state that Nintendo feels is ready to be shown. He also touched upon why Good-Feel was chosen as the developer, stating, "I looked at [Epic Yarn] and thought it was really beautiful. It seemed like it would be a good fit for Yoshi as well. We found that the Wii U would be able to make it a much more expressive game. It looked like it would be a lot of fun."

One other thing that was discussed was difficulty balancing within Nintendo's platforming titles. Tezuka noted that he would like to incorporate more of a challenge in the new Yoshi game if possible.

Agreed. The analysis and commentary of James/Jon was really great. Not to mention a great return of Greg, he always seems to be able to discuss the ramifications of the bigger picture in a really great an eloquent manner.

I don't get it. Nintendo should of been going hard after a port of KH3 and Metal Gear V. Plus all of the big games that are still coming to 360 and PS3.. Wii U could run these games easily.

Trading is faster, EV's/IV's will be more visible, and seven languages will get translations.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34586

Some smaller details regarding features for the new Pokémon X & Y games have been touched upon during the Roundtable and its Question & Answer session at E3.

The games will apparently feature multiple hairstyles for your player characters. The 3D animation of the Pokémon battles impressed the attendees of the Q & A. Eight new gym badges have been confirmed and trading Pokémon is a lot quicker than previous titles. The previously invisible background stats called EV and IV's are going to be more visible to the player this time around too, but exact details on that are not yet known.

As for the previously announced Pokémon Aime virtual-pet-esque feature, players can high-five,pet, feed, and play with their pokémon. A relationship built up this way will result in a better dodging for that pokémon in battle.

The Pokémon carts will also support the following seven languages:

  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34513

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD has been shown in video form, some new features have been discussed.

Graphically the game's art style looks very much like the original game in terms of lighting and overall shading. One of the new additions that was discussed was about a new item called the Tingle Bottle. This item lets users put a message in the bottle and then allows them to cast it out into the ocean, the message will then be sent through the Miiverse with the bottle washing up on the shores of other players games.

A tweak to the sailing was also revealed, players can now speed up their sailing speed, making traveling across the overworld less tedious.
