That top pic looks like Fluidity mixed with the art style of World of Goo. Colour me intrigued.

The reason the Gampad has not appealed to me thus far (I'm open to the possibility that it might be used to create interesting gameplay in the future) is that it's been employed up until now for two features that don't really apply to me.

Firstly, it offers the ability to play off-screen. This does not appeal to me for two reasons. Sharing a TV is simply not a problem for me, and I would prefer to play consoles on a big screen rather than small one.

The second feature that the Gamepad has brought to the table thus far has been asynchronous gameplay. Once again, however, the opportunity for me to get a bunch of friends round who are willing to actually play Nintendoland is pretty much non-existent.

Removing the Gamepad from the equation, therefore, I'm left to look at the games themselves. I'm sorry to say there's nothing out on Wii U at the moment that appeals to me. Pikmin 3 and Rayman Legends are definite contenders, but at this point I'm inclined to just wait and see what Sony and Microsoft are up to before taking the plunge.

I'm just about finished with Fluidity (getting 5 stars and all the puzzle pieces has been a blast) but I'm probably going to need another 3DS game between now and when FE: Awakening comes out in Europe in April. So I thought I'd hit you all up as to which of the following eShop games I should pick up next.
  • Sakura Samurai (as a huge fan of Punch Out!! I've been holding off on this one for one reason or another)
  • Crimson Shroud (I'm worried about picking this up and becoming infuriated with it's opacity)
  • Liberation Maiden (I'm a big fan of Sin & Punishment and Suda 51, but I've heard mixed things about this game)
  • Escapevektor (I didn't check this out on Wiiware, but I think I'm more inclined to buy a portable version of it)

If there's a clear winner amongst those options let me know. I'm kind of stumped.

Nintendo also published Mario Tennis Open and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask in 2012, and minor titles like Crosswords Plus

True. I didn't pick them up, although from all accounts they're quite good. I can't really justify paying full retail price for an arcade tennis game, I'm still burnt out on Layton (having played 1 - 3 over the span of 6 months), and I have the newspaper for my crosswords.

Really, it was between it, Kid Icarus and Paper Mario, so it's not at all surprising NSMB2 was the winner.

Wow. When you put it on the table like that, it really was a pretty terrible year for the 3DS in terms of retail Nintendo releases. I disliked, to varying degrees, all three of those games. Thankfully Nintendo were on top form with their download games. Fluidity and Crashmo were exceptional.

@azeke

I didn't say how dare people enjoy video games. I'm just bummed out that the Nintendo game that bored me the most was also the game that sold the most. I'm not trying to be a hipster here, that game truely did not stimulate me.

People are entitled to enjoy whatever they like.

Nintendo have to unveil what Retro has been up to at E3 this year, right? Right?!

DKCR and Mario Kart 7 are great and all, but I seriously doubt that has been all they've been doing since MP3. I wonder if they've been given free reign to create a new IP.

I woke up this morning with Frank Black's 'Abstract Plain' lodged firmly in my brain. I don't know why, I haven't listened to that song in over a year, but for some reason it's been following me around all day. To be perfectly honest, it's driving me mad, lol. I just can't get it out of my head! I've even tried humming the Fragle Rock theme (that usually over powers any other tune in my head) but to no avail.

Press play if you dare.

If 'Abstract Plain' does get stuck in your head, take the following 2 times a day for 4 weeks.

I had a hard lock too. I can't remember which level it was though. Luckily the levels are pretty short, so I didn't lose much progress.

I would just like to restate. This issue is decidedly not understandable. As with the issue of not being able to view mature content or download mature games during certain parts of the day, Nintendo seem to be the only company who keeps falling into these ridiculous problems.

Reports have been surfacing this last week which show that the Wii U has been selling pretty miserably in Europe. Nintendo seem to be chalking this up to them having put forth a reduced marketing effort in that region. Personally, I think it's because Nintendo of Europe are bunch of idiots. They recieved alot of credit (and rightly so) for localising Xenoblade and The Last Story, but this amateur s*** really needs to stop. Nintendo are arguably the biggest and best financed video game company on the planet. They should start acting like it and stop treating people in Europe to inferior services.

I saw 'Zero Dark 30' yesterday.

Skip this section if you don't care about my assessment of the debate surrounding this film.

***

There has been much debate among critics as to whether or not this film does or does not endorse torture as a legitimate means of extracting information. That debate frankly is bogus. Zero Dark 30 does not take a political stance as far as the legitmacy of the tactics involved are concerned. It merely presents these methods to the audience; Methods that were employed to extract information, useful or otherwise.

Where the film does take a stance I feel is in the usefulness of such information. Without going into spoilers, in the film a crucial piece of information is extracted through torture and misinformation. What the film does go on to show, however, is that this piece of 'intelligence' had already been given to the intelligence services. Zero Dark 30 does not indict torture on moral grounds (as I say, it remains largely apolitical), but rather indicts torture on the grounds that such intelligence is rarely trustworthy and often merely stands to corroborate what is already known.

The question that the film does leave you with in it's very final scene, but does not answer, is whether or not such information is worth the cost, both to those whose human rights are fettered by such military practices but also the cost to those who dole out such punishment.

***

I love the perspective this film takes on the 'War on Terror'. It's from the vantage point of those who actually cultivate leads, gather intelligence and package them up into a presentable case, which is then floated up the chain to those who take the decisions. It was all very interesting.

The first half of the movie, therefore, feels very much like a thriller. There's an intense feeling of dread and danger throughout this first section of the film, so when it does eventually switch gears to the military raid on the complex itself it almost feels cathartic. The raid is executed in what seems like real-time and the effect is that it truely feels like a calculated and deliberate assault. It portrays a restained forcefullness that I've not seen in many other military sequences.

In terms of performances, they're universally great. Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Mark Duplass, and James Gandolfini being particularly noteworthy.

This film is highly recommended. Be wary though, it will leave you feeling drained.

TalkBack / Re: Yoshi's Epic Garbage
« on: January 29, 2013, 04:53:17 PM »
Given that I brought it up, I should say that I don't hate Yoshi's Island. I just don't really rate it that highly. It seems to focus more on collecting things and moving around an open level rather than challenging platforming. The levels, therefore, are much more open, but that's not really what I'm looking for in a platformer.

Also, I've never really enjoyed playing as Yoshi (even in SMW). The trade off was never worth it for me. I'd much rather be more nimble, and Yoshi always felt like a weight around my ankles.

I do appreciate Yoshi's Island's approach to art design, which I feel holds up to this day, but I just don't get why it's so beloved by some people. I thought, in gameplay terms, it was a step backward from SMB3 and SMW.

Anyone seen Seveen Psychopaths? Is it good?

I thought it was enjoyable, but it was nowhere near as funny or as rebellious as In Bruges.

Arguably, it also manages to fall into the same traps as the Tarrantino-inspired gangster movies that it's ridiculing (the disregard for female characters, the fact that characters are defined by a quirk be it in their personality or their physical appearance, the disappointing deflated ending etc). Some might say that these things were intentional, or that McDonagh was being satirical, but it didn't really work for me.

The mechanics of the narrative aside though, the film can be hilarious. Walken, Rockwell and Waits are particularly good.

I just saw Lincoln last night.

I'm not sure what to make of it just yet. Not being an American, my understanding of the person of Lincoln and the events surrounding the 13th amendment are pretty limited, but I do feel like the film managed to strike a good balance between showing the machinery of politics while still managing to convey the ideals that motivated the man himself.

My big issue with the film, however, was the amount of times Lincoln sermonised throughout the movie. I found myself in agreement with one character in the film (the secretary of war I believe) who stated something to the effect that he could not bare to stand another one of Lincoln's stories. At a certain point in the film I too became weary of both Lincoln's grandiose oratory and his incessent parables.

Although the film was attempting to make a point about the need to be pragmatic, often as not I found myself more in agreement with Tommy Lee Jone's character.

Still, it's a good film with some great performances.

Just to reiterate. You do realise the Aurochs were a metaphor right? They're not supposed to be taken literally. They were a young girl's imagined threat in the face of the much larger threat of global warming. It's completely immaterial what Aurochs actually looked or behaved like, it's irrelevant. Hushpuppy imagines them as they're shown in the film.

I wonder what they typed into Google. I just performed a search on "Pokemon x" and I got zero erotic images (except for an image from an erotic Pokémon Doujinshi... yes, even kids' stuff isn't safe from the wretched hands of these). So I wonder...

The article suggests what they might be typing in. 'Pokemon X Videos'.

This story is just too funny, lol.

I'm not really set up for skype so I won't be able to call in unfortunately, but I've given my thoughts on the game pretty thoroughly in the unofficial thread.

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone else's take on the game. It certainly is a polarising game.

Maybe the beads are both your currency/score and also your projectiles. Perhaps instead of throwing eggs Yoshi can throw the beads you've collected. That would bring a certain balance to it, because by over using your projectile attack you would be minimising your potential score.

Just a thought.

That really surprises me. The Master might not be as substantive as There Will Be Blood, or as refreshing as Punch-Drunk Love, but Hoffman, Adams and Phoenix absolutely nailed their roles and it was perhaps one of the most visually appealing films I've ever seen. For me that goes a long way.

I wonder how it done internationally.

I really enjoyed BotSW. The acting was superb, particularly that of the young actress who played Hushpuppy, and the cinematography was beautiful. I also thought that the fictional post-apocalyptic setting gave a unique mood to what was effectively a tale of growing up.

My only real criticism of the film is that I found it's ecological message to be a little trite. However, watched as a character study with an interesting framing device (I'd be interested to hear whether or not you accepted the Aurochs as anything more than a young girl's imagination) I think it's a fantastic film.

The fact that BotSW received Oscar recognition at least takes the sting out of the fact that The Master was largely ignored in all the big categories.
