TalkBack / Re: Miiverse Functionality for Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U Detailed
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:01:19 PM »
I wonder if you can take these Point of View photographs at any point. I'd like to take a picture from the perspective of a Pikmin that is in the process of going down the gullet of a Bulborb. You know? To truely experience the horror of what happens to a Pikmin when it is swallowed whole.

I'm still torn on the whole Pikmin genre question.

On the one hand I can see why some people might want to place it in the action/strategy box. For me though, when I'm playing Pikmin 1 or 2 I'm playing it as an action/adventure (I grant you, that term too has it's faults). My classification of Pikmin, however, probably has something to do with the way that I played Pikmin 2. I never really felt comfortable using Olimar and Louie to do two things at once. So I usually rounded up a crack team of Pikmin of various colours with Olimar to do most of the heavy lifting (figuratively and literally), and just had Louie hang back so that I could keep an eye on the stragglers. There was very little strategy to the way I played that game, apart from using the correct coloured Pikmin when required.

TalkBack / Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: An Unnecessary Remake
« on: February 19, 2013, 11:22:12 AM »
Necessary or not, if Nintendo can successfully port great games like DKCR and it let's those games reach a wider audience (and hopefully Nintendo make some money along the way) then all power to them. There are plenty of ports that I have personally played that might be thought of as unnecessary, but for which I am very glad exist.

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Okami (for Wii), Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. What is unnecessary to one person is a worthwhile addition to a library for another.

As for your point about there being better ways for Nintendo to spend their resources, I would say that's difficult to determine without knowing how much resources were actually expended to port this game. If I had to guess though, I'd say not very much. That's not to say that porting a game from Wii to 3DS is trivial, but I can't imagine Nintendo would have had one of their top tier teams working on this and I also can't see this being a particularly expensive venture.

All that said, I still have no intention of picking this up. I loved it on Wii and I don't think I would enjoy it as much on the 3DS screen.

Yeah, we basically said the same thing. The only difference is that I'm inefficient with my words.

After finishing House of Cards there is one plot point I'm a little confused about:

Why did Frank get so angry at Claire for torpedoing the watershed bill? By the end of the season, it's clear that Frank wanted Peter Russo's campaign to fail, and the death of the watershed bill helped make that happen.

Frank did want Russo's campaign to ultimately fail, but he wanted the collapse of that campaign to be because of Russo's weakness rather than Frank's own miscalculation. Passing the watershed bill would have been another feather in Frank's cap, further proof that he would be a worthy nominee for vice-president. I think Frank's whole plan was to pick a candidate who Matthews did not deem good enough to be his replacement as governor, get matthews out there on the campaign trail to remind him of what he was missing, then leave it until the closing stages of the campaign to destroy Russo so that the only person capable of turning it around would be the former Governor himself. Basically, the plan was to not only convince Matthews that he wanted to be Governer again, but also to hold off on destroying Russo until such a late stage in the campaign that Matthews was the only one capable of fixing the problem (which fed into Matthews desire to feel like he was doing something productive).

The failure of the Watershed Bill was a set back as it made Frank as a Whip look incompetent, and therefore less likely to be nominated for VP, but clearly it didn't stop him from succeeding.

He already had plenty of dimension.  He already made mistakes.  My problem is that the moment they did that the show instantly went into Idiot Plot territory.

To be honest, I still don't completely understand what you find so egregious about that plot or where they took the character. It's like we watched different shows, lol.

I just got 'To the Moon' from steam for £2.37. I'm looking forward to experiencing it for myself, as I've tried to avoid spoilers for the game knowing that I would pick it up at some point or another.

HarmoKnight is the one you want. Unless you want all of them, in which case more power to ya.
I do believe its another non-Pokemon joint from the Pokemon developers...first one since Drill Dozer?

Wasn't the lead designer a Westerner as well?

And even then, I still have to make sure my son isn't killing himself by sticking his hands in an open socket or getting himself attacked by our cats.

lol. What is it with kids and electrical outputs? I was keeping an eye on my 5 year old cousin last week and he seemed drawn to every possible socket he could find.

General Gaming / The Dilemma of playing video games in Spring and Summer
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:43:52 AM »
Being as it's February, it is still relatively 'baltic' (see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=baltic) here in Ireland. Even still, for the last week or so we've being experiencing a spell of unseasonably sunny weather. The mornings have been getting brighter, the afternoons longer, and people's antipathy towards one another, if not dispelled completely, has at least become less acute. As for myself, I've been running more, visiting the park, and taking my pint outside to read a book. All of which is great.

The problem (if you want to call it that), however, is that I find it very difficult to get motivated to play video games in such conditions. Currently, it's still getting dark at about 5 - 6 PM, so there's still plenty of time to get some gaming done during the dark hours. As the days get longer though, I seem to lose the ability to play games for protracted periods of time (which is going to be a problem given that Awakening is released here in April).

My question is, does anybody else lose their motivation or stamina for gaming when the birds be a singing and the sun be a shining? Do you substitute indoor activities for outside ones? Perhaps instead of playing Call of Duty you go to Paintball? Do you supplant playing Mario Kart with actual Go-Karting? Maybe you're a fan of Kirby who opts to go outside and inhale actual ice cream as oppose to virtual ice cream? Let us know.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Sells 57K Units in January
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:42:19 AM »
With the Wii U having only been out for a day shy of four months, it's really too early for any of this conversation. When we get the sales figures this time next year, after all the highly-anticipated games have been released and had time to circulate the market, we will then know enough to have an informed discussion about the health of the system. But not until then.

Where's the fun in that?

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Sells 57K Units in January
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:40:40 AM »
I agree with what many people have already said, that the market is not what it was in 2006 and consumer's are more hesitant to purchase now than they were then. However, based purely on my discussions with those around me (friends, family, colleagues etc., so far from scientific) I get the sense that people are actually crying out for a new console. The current generation of home consoles have all but run their course, and people really do seem to want something new. The excitement surrounding the upcoming Sony announcement I think speaks to that anticipation.

The Wii U for all it's qualities, however, does not seem to be convincing gamers that it in fact offers anything new. Even I, a long time Nintendo fan of some 20 years, am not yet convinced by the system. Proponents of the system rightly say that new games are coming and that the software library will become healthier with time. All of which is true, but my being a fan of Nintendo's systems has always been conditional. I support those systems which support me, and at the moment the Wii U does not have a single release that interests me.

If the Wii U isn't an attractive prospect to someone like me (and I'm sure I'm not the only Nintendo fan who isn't impressed), then it's hardly surprising that it's not selling to the broader market.

For what it's worth, my opinion is that Nintendo have a small window of opportunity in which to make a dent with the Wii U. If Nintendo sell enough Wii U's before the next Sony and Microsoft consoles hit then the system might have sufficient momentum and mindshare to continue receiving support from third partys. If the Wii U sells poorly or lower than expectations during this period then the system is likely to be left behind by third partys as they move on to develop for the Sony and Microsoft platforms, which by all accounts are far more comprobable.

It's going to be an interesting few months.

TalkBack / Re: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Preview
« on: February 16, 2013, 02:19:02 AM »
The recent trailer for this game got me pretty excited. I particularly like the clever uses they've come up with for the Poltergust (sucking in air to turn fans and blowing out air to expand balloons etc).

I'm still slightly worried by the controls, but based on what I've seen thus far Dark Moon doesn't look to be a particularly demanding game as far as difficulty goes, so hopefully the control scheme doesn't get in the way of the game.

Because I like the game and am curious what others have to say.

You should have said that then. Voting for a game because it's good and because you're interested to hear other people's opinons of it is not the same as voting for it because it's the only game you have.  :P: :

Kersploosh sounds awesome.  It may be the best of all the games announced today, though I have no idea what HarmoKnight is, so I can't talk about that one.

From what I understand (most of which was gleaned mostly from listening to 8-4 Play) it's a rhythm game in the vein of Bit.Trip Runner. That's perhaps a crude comparison but having not played the game that's the most apt connection I could make.

I'm looking forward to it.

I really didn't like Dracula X (RFN is to blame for my regretful "I'll give it a chance" purchase, actually).

What didn't you like about it?

*I played Rondo of Blood some earlier today. I know that's cheating, but I really wanted to listen to some amazing music and you don't get more amazing than Castlevania. Such a good game.

I find my favorite retroactives are ones in which the game is good but has certain flaws that can cause a contentious discussion upon.

Same here. I think that's why my favourite Retroactives have been Metroid II and Ogre Battle 64.

What is it with random renaming between regions?

They're still doing it, does this really help?

Yeah, it's really dumb. It's the opposite of helpful in that it actually squanders marketing and contributes to a lack of name recognition.

One thing that I will give Nintendo credit for though is that if you search for a game using the North American name in the European eShop is still directs you to the correct game. I guess that's the least they could do, but I'm still grateful for it.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Predicting new titles based on VC releases
« on: February 15, 2013, 02:28:18 AM »
It makes sense for publisher to prepare audience for new games in the series by releasing previous one (or similar one, or at least the one with similar name) on downloadable services. Like with seemingly random Sin & Punishment N64 release on VC that was actually leading up to S&P 2.

I don't believe that it was Nintendo's intention to prepare (or create) an audience when they released Sin & Punishment on the VC. I remember reading that the popularity of the VC release had surprised Nintendo, but that it had convinced Nintendo and Treasure that there was an audience out there big enough to justify a sequel. Which is supported by the fact that Sin & Punishment was released on VC in Sept 2007, while Star Successor came out June 2010. If it had been their intention from the start to build some momentum behind the series then I'm sure they would have had the two be released within weeks of each other rather than years.

Generally though, I just don't give Nintendo that much credit when it comes to preparation and planning as it relates to Virtual Console. Everything about VC has always seems ad hoc and chaotic to me. Even those times where synchronisation is apparent, or a VC release quite clearly has been used to build momentum for a given series, I still like to think that those examples are pure happenstance, lol.

Kersploosh is without a doubt the best name for a game in the history of the universe. It's just so much fun to say.
By comparison, the European name of 'Splash or Crash' isn't nearly as much fun. It sounds like a cheaply made Wipeout knock off.

I wasn't aware that there was a nunchuck option for DKCR either. That makes the lack of a classic controller option even more bizarre.

Had I known about that option I would not have used it though. Given the choice between a D pad (a Nintendo one, mind you) and an analogue stick for a 2D platformer, I don't understand why anyone would choose the latter. Using an analogue input to control something which is in fact digital (i.e. left or right) just seems wrong to me. Dragging the stick from one side to the other just isn't as immediate as using a button press.

Jonny may have played it, but I haven't. It's all about the community man, you know?  :P: :

I think I might pick up Ys I & II at some point regardless of whether or not it wins, but retroactives always make it more fun. I think they prompt me to actually consider what it is that I do and don't like about a given game, rather than just consuming it.
