Nintendo Gaming / Re: I still don't get Monster Hunter...
« on: February 22, 2013, 04:12:25 AM »
I found what I think was the thing I was supposed to kill, and I kept whacking at it for a while but I eventually died. Is there a way to see the health of the boss somewhere? I hit it a whole bunch of times, and it flashed when I did so I know it registered, but I'm not sure if there's any way to know if I'm making progress.

Monster Hunter has a pretty elegant approach to health, which is that the creatures will exhibit physically whether or not they're hurt. If you manage to damage a leg it might limp, you hit it enough times on the tail and you will cleave it clean off. The Monster can become tired, poisened, hurt etc but it's all inferred by looking at the creature and how it's behaving. Which I think is pretty cool.

A well designed game shouldn't take forty hours to get good. That isn't a phrase that makes me want to get the game.

For what it's worth, I disagree with Kytim89 that it takes that long for the games to get good. Personally, I had fun with Tri from the outset. I might not have understood all the systems right away and I died more often that I care to admit, but I was still having fun learning what worked and what didn't, learning how to craft new weapons, learning which armor worked best, learning where on the map I could farm resources etc. If you like the feeling of discovery and don't think that trying things for yourself is a chore then I'd say you'll enjoy it from the beginning.

The fun parts for me in Monster Hunter weren't necessarilly the sections when I felt like I was dominating (although those were pretty awesome), but rather the parts where I was figuring stuff out and making incremental improvements to my character. If you're not in to that sort of thing then I don't think it will ever be fun for you. Even 40 hours later.

I'm starting to wonder if Capcom needs to put up a "You must be this Japanese and have played THIS many Monster Hunter games to Enjoy"

That's a little unfair. I've played only one Monster Hunter game which was Tri, I had no experience of the series prior to that, and I adored that game. Monster Hunter definitely demands that you learn it's systems, but I also feel like it gives you sufficient training in the tutorials. The problem seems to be that you simply can't explain those systems in the shorter format of a demo.

The Following -- 9/10

Kevin Bacon's first TV role

Except for the year he spent on the soap opera Guiding Light, and the 5 TV shows he guest starred on, and the 4 TV movies he was in.

Yeah...you know...apart from that.

The GameCube can play all Zeldas that released pre-2007 with the GameBoy Player.

It can play the CDi Zelda games?  :P:

Glad to hear it's finally coming out. I can tell by the comments none of you will be buying it. $10 is a fair price for a non-HD version. Still looks fun, hope people give it a chance. If you don't own other systems, you don't have a good reason not to try it if you were interested before the Wii U.
I can only speak for myself, but the reason I'm no longer interested in the game is because I now have a clearer idea of what it is. I've read some reviews and watched some videos and it doesn't look or sound as fun as I thought it once did. In particular, the copious amount of redundant references to 80's movies and the self-referential video game jokes just don't appeal to me.

Plus, I've played Hotline Miami in the interim and that game is a top down GTA inspired action game that's more to my tastes (i.e. psychotic and twisted).

TalkBack / Re: Online Play Coming to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in Japan
« on: February 21, 2013, 06:43:01 PM »
Before anyone uses this as a criticism of Nintendo, this is basically the exact same method they used to give online play to the PSP versions of Monster Hunter by connecting to the PS3. And something to remember there is that functionality never made it outside of Japan.
It's certainly not Nintendo's fault, but regardless of whether or not there's precedent for this sort of setup it's still pretty silly. It's 2013. If your intention is to create a game which relies primarilly on multiplayer then provide an accessible way of getting playing it online. These ad-hoc solutions and specialised pieces of hardware are ridiculous.

If this game had included online I would have bought it day one (I loved Tri). I don't own a Wii U and don't see myself getting one any time soon. I have no intention of buying a Monster Hunter game that I can only play single player.

With Nintendo's recent epiphany in regard to having options, as evidenced by the button mapping ability, why not include both the American and European version in the download, and let you pick which one you want? It kind of screws over continental Europe in games that are more text-heavy, but it's at least good for UK/Australia and wouldn't require anymore work than they're already doing.

Applaud for truth.

You really bummed me out with that statement, lol. Nintendo are just dumb enough to do something like that.

Majora's Mask is a distinct possibility of course. With the announcement of DKCR Wii games appear to be on the table too. If Nintendo were to follow Sony's lead the new Wind Waker release would include cross play. What if the 3DS could be home to every Zelda game ever released?!

That's right! Even the CDi games!

The one that surprised me most was
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
£29.40

I think that's a pretty awesome deal (for me).

Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
£15.00

That's a steal of a price compared to going rates on certain large auction sites.

Really?

hm...

Interesting. I guess I could make more money by selling some of them individually but to be honest I'd rather not have to deal with that. If I can send them all off together and just get a single amount for the lot, then I think that's preferable (although it will probably mean accepting less than I could get for certain games).

Thanks for the heads up, though. It's appreciated.

General Gaming / The big pre-next generation trade in bonanza!
« on: February 21, 2013, 01:50:49 PM »
I do this every generation. When on the cusp of a new round of video game consoles being released I always look back over the games that I've collected and treasured for the preceding 5 or 6 years and ask myself, 'am I likely to want to play these games again any time soon?'. To which the answer is invariably 'no'.

I'm a pragmatist, so if I can make money in the short term by selling my old games in order to put those funds towards a new console and new experiences then I usually will. Today was that day with my Wii.
The following is a list of those games which, despite their quality, I'm willing to part with (The Galaxy titles and Metroid Prime Trilogy aren't going any where) and the price I'm apparently willing to accept for someone to take them off my hands.

Paper Mario Sticker Star (Nintendo 3DS)
£18.00
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)
£10.00
New Super Mario Brothers (Wii)
£18.00
The Last Story (Wii)
£15.00
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GameCube)
£5.10
Killer 7 (GameCube)
£11.20
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
£29.40
Super Mario All-Stars - 25th Anniversary Edition (Wii)
£18.80
Super Paper Mario (Wii)
£8.60
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
£9.60
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom Ultimate All Stars (Wii)
£5.20
Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
£7.50
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
£8.10
Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii)
£7.50
Pikmin 2 (Wii)
£8.80
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
£15.00
Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
£10.20
A Boy and His Blob (Wii)
£10.30
No More Heroes 2 - Desperate Struggle (Wii)
£6.20
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)
£9.60
Wario Land: The Shake Dimension (Wii)
£5.50
Metal Slug Anthology (Wii)
£9.00
Okami (Wii)
£5.90
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo 3DS)
£17.00

Altogether amounting to a figure of £269.60 ($411.31). It's always relieving when I unburden myself by getting rid of games and it always nice to have more space, but it can also be a little sad too. What I can say though is that I played and enjoyed (to varying degrees) each one of these games, and I more than got my money's worth. It's time to look forward to all the great new games I'm going to be playing in the coming years.

What do you guys think? Do you also reach a point at which you are able to simply get rid of games? Or do you keep every game you buy?

Good on Nintendo of Europe getting the 60hz version of the game out!

I'm glad this is finally happening but I wouldn't go so far as to congratulate Nintendo. It's quite frankly ridiculous that it's taken this long for such an avertible issue to be addressed.

It doesn't make up for the fact that we got screwed as far as Wii VC goes, but hopefully this marks the beginning of the end for the whole 50hz debacle.

« on: February 20, 2013, 02:01:43 AM »
To be honest, as much as I loved DKCR, it was below Retro from the beginning if you ask me. 2D platformers are a dime a dozen and in this day and age very good examples of the genre are being made by teams of one or two people. My hope has always been that DKCR was a stopgap until Retro could reveal what they've really been working on. If it is revealed that Retro was involved in this port as well then I'll assume the same, that they're still plugging away at something big and that this was just a little side project.

If, however, I eventually hear that Retro is designing tracks for Mario Kart U then I'm going to have to start writing threatening letters to Nintendo.

but I do still think porting Wii games should not be a priority.

Well, then you'll be relieved to hear that it hasn't been, and will continue not to be, a priority. One release does not a trend make.

New Controls will make this the better version of an already amazing game

Possibly. I think I would still recommend that people play it on a TV though. That game looks fantastic.

The button layout of the 3DS will also allow you to play DKCR the way it should have been played, with the 'Y' button as run and the 'B' button as jump. Those controls worked so well on the SNES, and would have worked perfectly on Wii had the Classic Controller been employed.
