Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Lowers Wii Sales Projections
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:21:46 PM »
What's amazing is the lack of spin from Iwata.  Anybody else gets asked about how their console is outright failing and we hear about 10-year-plans and "1 billion gamers" and whatnot.   That amount of frank candor is truly surprising because I expected him to blame the economy like some do.

About what Nintendo needs to do to stay ahead?  Well, nothing at this point.  They're still outselling everybody, for the most part.  But if they want their console to really flourish, they'll need to expand their internal game developers and expand their American localization staff.  They might want to flex their money as well, as they have a ton of it and they only make one thing, as opposed to their competitors, one of whom's games division is running out of all the money they've earned since 1998 and another who is something like $9 billion in the hole.

Nintendo's done a lot without third parties, in fact they've even WON without third parties.  But now would be the time to start tying together $100 bills and throwing some of these struggling third parties lifelines, particularly Japanese ones.  They could go onto an acquisition spree (They have enough money, just from last year's profits, to buy both EA and Square-Enix outright, and have enough left over for donuts), but that might have bad counter effects if all their talent leaves when Nintendo buys them (which would prove a certain truth that's been bandied about here before.)  But they should be trying to mend this gap, because they made a foolish error in thinking simple logic and basic arithmetic would bring over most of them.  It's like you know who your friends are on moving day.  Nintendo needs to help them move, so to speak.

OR they could do what Sony did with Squaresoft back in 1997 and buy up stock in a lot of these third parties and use that influence.  Or even buy controlling stakes, which would be cheaper than just buying the company outright and would have about the same effect.

And all of this I think Nintendo realizes because this business is a fast paced one, and standing still for a long time allows for decline to creep it's ugly head (such as Square Enix's case, where most of their revenue this generation has come from DS ports of old games they had already developed, while their console games take ages to complete.)  And let's not forget that they must have a (while still sensible) large development budget for their next console.  The falling technology prices and abject failures of their competitors will allow for a laser focus on the best things to appropriate.  It's their turn on stage, they should use it to their advantage.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: October 31, 2009, 08:48:36 PM »
Nintendo needs to be worried generally about the Wii's performance, but it's pretty much locked in stone that Nintendo's won Japan for this generation.  If only some of Japan's third parties would realize this instead of willfully ignoring it and talking about how much Japan's video game market is doomed because "in Japan only 4 million or so consoles sold this cycle."  Which is said with a straight face.

Deg, do you think that Pale and I don't have real world stuff to do as well?  Do you think we take pleasure in refereeing you two?  (Hint: we don't)

Where did I insinuate that I didn't?  I'm saying that I don't lie in wait to ambush D_Average in random topics.  And there's the problem right there.  there is no "refereeing" needed.  He's broken several forum rules as well as personally trolled me, when in return I HAVE taken the high road and appealed to you and the mods for relief and gotten nothing but insults from him and inaction from mods.

Quote
The fact is that in this thread you took the first shot when you could have taken the high road.  Once you did that, D_Average's response was entirely predictable (not that that makes it right).  Furthermore, don't tell me you're concerned with thread derailment when you post your lengthy responses begging for further discussion.

I didn't continue this derailment, in fact my post after I lamented D_Average's actual attempt at derailing the thread, I continued talking about the topic's subject.

Quote
Just as was the case with Ian Sane (who was asked to tone it down, and has since done so), we aren't going to ban somebody just because you have a long-running personal feud with them.

Excuse me, but did you forget the part where he's personally insulted me, several other people on this forum, and the whole forum itself?  Even in this very thread?  He's a chronic rule-breaker and you're telling me he gets away with it because he chooses to antagonize me and that makes it a "personal feud?"  Yeah, he ticks me off.  He personally insults me and gets away with it because he personally insults just me, making it a "personal feud?"  Every civil channel I try to use fails and he gets to continue his constant trolling of every thread and myself because he doesn't care about the rules and I do?  Who wouldn't get angry at that?

And I never asked for Ian Sane to be banned.  I was a mod then, so if I wanted him banned I would have done it myself.  I just thought his repetitive posts could be considered trolling back in like, 2004.  I'd take three Ians compared to this guy.  I never even knew the meaning of troll until this D_average guy showed up.  I still resent that you guys are trying to make this a "personal feud."  We he trolled me the first time I went to you first, while he continued insulting me.  Every time I have appealed to the mods and thus far have gotten zero result besides a few limp warnings which just encouraged him to do more.  It is not right, nor is it fair.

I think what should be considered is what will become of the rest of the forum if a clear, chronic, caustic rule-breaker does not get dealt with.  What is the incentive to follow the rules if there is no consequence for breaking them?

229
Tell, how was D_Average's comment in this thread directly harrassing anybody?  It was a stupid comment, but it's one that can be safely ignored since it wasn't directly aimed at anybody.

Perhaps because it seemed like we would always warn or ban people who don't make productive posts and just spread idiocy when I was a mod.  I don't know if the rule changed but we've certainly become more tolerant of trolls around here.  Especially since he, once again, did that retarded name-spelling bull**** that you already warned him THREE TIMES about.

And his defense to all this is "Internet is serious business" which basically means he thinks this place is just a troll zone that he can play around in, or some kind of clubhouse.

Quote
Well next time please just ignore his jab and don't respond as you did.

And Pale, would you prefer Pro ignore the out-of-left-field inclusion into the same category as a guy who continually directly insults me with bullcrap like "Dug?"  Because it seems like a false equivalency when Pro has actually been a productive member of the forum for quite a long time and this guy has been a pain in the ass from day one.  In fact, I'm kinda tired of being declared equivalent to him just because we "don't like each other."  Of course we don't.  He's broken the forum's rules several times with reckless abandon and personally insulted me several times and I've just had to sit there and take it because I know blowing up in return would reflect poorly on me and that I have faith in the mods to take care of the issue.

Also, It's not like I lay dormant on the forums waiting for D_Average to post and then strike like a python.  I have real world stuff to do like college, including the exams and campus jobs therein.  When I do have free time, I usually come see the discussions and this one intrigued me.  And then I see his pointless post which adds nothing, not even a snarky joke at anything.  Notice I only commented to his in passing in a full post about the subject's material.  It not like I wanted to derail the thread.

Well he's not going to say "You're right, Rock Band's a money loser.  We're going to axe it."

But if the music market is shrinking, which it is, and you haven't made money yet.  You aren't going to if it continues to shrink.  Which it looks like it's going to.  Ask Konami about DDR.

And MS and the Xbox is a poor example, because MS still hasn't made money on the Xbox, or even the Xbox 360 for that matter, despite showing a few profitable quarters.

All it means is that it's a market that will always be able to consistently make money, and we've reached that point.  Personally, I don't see a huge problem with it.

Viacom hasn't made money on Rock Band yet.  Guitar Hero's sales are dwindling pretty sharply.  I'm not sure how this reads as "healthy market" but you are free to your opinion.

232
It's not really surprising that DJ Hero might struggle.  The whole music genre has been driven into the ground every single year, and with the release of RockBand: Beatles, the music is only going to go downhill from here.

Until they get a Karaoke collection of Michael Jackson, all we can do is watch this plastic-guitar music game genre slowly die (as I sit smiling.)

Should have gone with GlowsTick Hero instead.  Especially with the upcoming lotions on the horizons.

*sigh* must you poison this thread with your nonsense, too?

It also doen't help that the strong contingent of bestiality practitioners are becoming the vocal supporters of the franchise. These unwashed masses are scaring everyday people away from the game.

I somewhat agree.  It's similar to what's happened to Sonic.

I also thought Star Fox Command was OK.  It was at least better than Assault, which is the counter-argument to F-Zero GX for Nintendo letting prospective third parties handle in-house IP.  Namco dragged their feet for almost 2 years on that game, and whether it was sabotage or incompetence, left a steaming pile where the game was supposed to be.

When Sony introduces a new IP they might be using a genre that has already been done but they're still creating a new world for the player to explore.  That is significant.  It's been a long time since Nintendo gave us a new world to explore.  And when both companies are mostly sticking to genre games for their core gaming offerings new IP gets the edge.

What do you mean by "genre" games?  Can anything ever NOT be a "genre" game?  I can think of a few, but you won't like them.  (Wii Fit, Brain Age)

Yeah this thread is the pits.  I hate it when people just don't do basic research and the thread gets derailed having to deal with phantom issues.  they'll say stupid stuff like "Nintendo oughta remake Rad Racer" which just sends the facepalms a-flying.

Did you actually just reword your post and not reply?

Because it looks like you did.  May I ask that you cut to the chase with your posts?  Because this whining you are doing is just irritating, and I don't know what your point is.

Are you angry Nintendo doesn't just sink all their profits into R&D?  Do you hate profits?  Do you hate things that become successful?  Do you hate successful things that you don't like?  What?

Because this thread's about it and that if you don't like it you should probably have not replied instead of caring so much about the topic that you decided to tell us how much you don't care?

Well, you should.  I think it might be the most ever generated by a single video game.

Hey the DS has two perfectly good screens.  This thing has the electronic screen with a crack in it, put there, on purpose, so it can fold.  notice how the folding is done by a machine.  Why not have the humans demonstrator fold it, like we would?

This is just a wear and tear issue.  How many times can the screen be folded before the colors bleed?  If I (or a child) closes it too fast, will the screen crack?  I'm all for advancement, but not at the expense of durability.

I dunno, that's got a pretty obvious and pronounced ridge in the middle.  What's the wear and tear on that thing, because I don't think Nintendo is interested is something that would break easily.

Gotta love how this all breaks down into personal definitions of whatever.  Nobody's wrong!

Nintendo certainly does risk a lot more than Sony, and it's basically proven by the way both were presented going into this generation.  Starting around 2004 Nintendo was "crazy" and "working on their next Virtual Boy" and Sony was doing the things that would assure them victory with the PSP and PS3.

Just because we have 3 years of hindsight under our belts doesn't mean what Nintendo did was a sure bet and what Sony did was foolhardy (well, maybe the $600 thing was.) in 2006. And furthermore, just being rash and stupid doesn't equivocate to taking risks.  My economics professor put it best when he told us that risk is trying to cross a rickety bridge and being stupid was jumping off a cliff and hoping a bridge would form under you.  Making Wii Fit amidst all the criticism of abandoning hardcores and destroying videogames was risky.  Making a updated handheld that's almost 50% more expensive while slashing features and robbing your customers of their ownership rights is stupid (and also not risky either.  How much has been said of the future of "digital distribution?"  Sony's just responding to the fan's wants.)

Nintendo risked much more in making the DS and Wii than Sony did with the PSP and PS3.  Sony stuck with familiar territory.  It was Nintendo who zagged while others zigged.  New IPs aren't a good measure of "taking risks" either.  Mainly because Sony only does that when their current IPs barely make a ripple.  Of the ones that DO stick in the marketplace, Sony drives them into the ground with vicious tenacity.  Like Ratchet and Clank, Socom, Crash Bandicoot (which they sold off once it was no longer useful.  Go artistic company).  And numerous times, these "new IPs" are just a version of an already existing game, like the Getaway is to GTA.

Uh well... in conclusion, don't confuse being risky with being stupid, and don't be results-oriented and use hindsight to judge either.

Just think about the revenue generated by about 22 million units of Wii Fit sold worldwide at $90 a pop.

Does owning a Wii make you a pedophile?

Try googling PS3Player178 and see what you find.

Are Nintendo gamers really that spiteful that they would _hope_ they can brag to non Wii owners about a game they can't play?  And then, be genuinely upset or panicked if that bragging possibility goes away?

Yes, they are.  Probably has something to do with all the games on the PS2/PS3 and Xbox/Xbox 360 that have never been on a Nintendo console.

Oh give me a break, Microsoft and Sony fanboys are just as bad.  Do I need to bring up the meltdown that happened when Final Fantasy 13 was announced to no longer be PS3 exclusive?

I concur.  There are vast swaths of Sony and Microsoft fanboys, some of whom are very influential Video games journalists and heads of third parties, who actually want to see Nintendo run out of business.  In mid-2006, Midway held a meeting where they basically complained that the Wii had the very audacity to be popular at E3 and even be part of the next generation.

As for the exclusivity, I think it has more to do that it was announced as a Wii exclusive and like, HOURS later we hear crap about it being multiplatform.  Even if it's bull****, I, as a Wii owner and a Nintendo fan, would rather not be jerked around like that.  It's like when Megaman 9 was a Wiiware exclusive for about a day.  It seriously kills enthusiasm and can cause already bitter Wii owners who harbor hostility for third parties to just start raging.

His debating may leave something to be desired, and he may be a little annoying at times, but I don't remember ever disliking anyone to the point of wishing them banned.

His "debating" includes personal insults of a sexual nature against anybody who is on the other side.  Yeah I dislike him, because:
1) He's personally insulted me and several others.
2) He's broken the rules repeatedly, particularly the one about sexual orientation.
I want him banned because of that, not just because I dislike him.

I'm sorry he followed me into the thread BnM, but he was going to post in here anyway.

249
Hey, sexual orientation is waaay against the rules, but he was all too willing to discuss that with everybody in that thread.

I haven't even seen this guy get "warned" yet.  Is this our model poster now?  Are we all supposed to be like him now, crashing threads and questioning everybody's sexual preferences?

250
I think he already ruined it just by posting in it.  Ian has issues with Nintendo, but he doesn't go around insulting everybody on the forum for disagreeing with him.  He posted a succinct and well-written post that had to do with the topic and my post, I actually highly appreciate Ian these days, if only because I've been exposed to a hellish alternative in the form of D_Average.

On the other hand. D_Average makes grade school insults and says people who disagree with him **** their Wiis and jerk off to pictures of Miyamoto.  If that **** doesn't get banned, what will?
