Retro's project is actually F-Zero U. With 30-player online and track editors and replay sharing and ghost sharing and voice chat and with all the speed and feel of GX on steroids.

let me be delusional

I would prefer an original ip from them at E3, but barring that a modern FZero like you just described would be absolutely amazing.

I think that alone is worth $4.99, but that's just me ;D.

James was ragging on Aero Porter on the latest RFN, but for $3 it sounds quirky enough to give it a shot.  It's good to hear that you are enjoying it as I may take the plunge soon.

I wish they'd advertise them on my 3DS and Wii U when I boot up and then let me stream the Full Nintendo Direct on my 3DS and Wii U!
Nintendo Directs can be watched on Wii U.

That's how i watched the last one, live.

Same thing on 3DS. The directs are advertised in a way on the eShop of both systems as they are usually put up on the front page (WiiU)/within first few panels (3DS) after the direct is over along with relevant videos and trailers for games (this is more so on 3DS). I've watched every ND this year so far on my WiiU game pad through the eShop.

I just bought Liberation Maiden and Crimson Shroud on sale for 50% of each.  Both are games I wanted when the Guild01 series was first announced and even though I won't be getting to them anytime soon (currently playing through Radiant Historia and have Paper Mario Sticker Star after that) I had to take advantage of this deal.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 334: Stupor Guide
« on: April 23, 2013, 01:30:31 AM »
Great episode guys! I agree that the 3DS megatons were dropped prior to E3 because Nintendo wants to put all its focus onto WiiU.  They can ill afford to split their energies at E3, particularly at their press conference, during a year when 2 (!) new consoles from their competitors are gonna be blown out.  I think this is a smart move (and good timing on their part) because it allays any concerns about the possible absence of new or big 3DS info (unlike how Sony completely ignored the Vita last year with nothing pre or post E3 about it).

I'm surprised that you guys didn't talk about how things like Operation Rainfall and Miiverse have seemed to have a real impact on games being released here in the west that previously didn't.  I would argue that if no noise at all was made about Earthbound (particularly on Miiverse, but not exclusively only there) it would not see a release here in the west on VC.  I think this is the first time that I've seen a major gaming publisher actually listen to their fans to the point of releasing software or addressing stuff like the Wii U system load times.  I hope this will be a new trend and Nintendo continues to listen and (more importantly) react appropriately.

I can't believe no one is talking about the possibility of playing VC games you own across both 3DS and WiiU :Q ! That is the one thing I want most out of the new VC service. They can implement like Sony does with their PSP/Vita/PS3 games (which probably would require an account based system), or charge me a $1 per game that I own to transfer over to 3DS like they are doing with Wii to WiiU.

Outside a very few games from the N64, I would prefer to carry and play ALL VC games on my 3DS.

TalkBack / Re: Weighing My DS Backlog Options
« on: April 23, 2013, 12:49:54 AM »
Wow, what a daunting list of games to choose from :Q ! Out of those 5 games I own 4. I have beaten 3 (Days of Ruin, TWEWY, and 999) and am currently playing Radiant Historia. They are all really different games, despite more than half being rpgs.  If you are looking for something to play along with something else on your 3DS, I'd pick Days of Ruin as it will require I think the least amount of attention (being least reliant on story of the bunch) and as a game that can literally be played turn by turn.

If you want something short but punchy, I say go with 999.  The first play through will arguably be your longest, but even that's at most maybe 4-5 hours or so ( it's been a while since I played through it). If you like what you played by your first ending, you can go through it again to see alternate paths to the game and ultimately flesh the story out more to it's awesomely satisfying conclusion.  If you don't like it by your first ending, you can put it down satisfied that you at least *beat* the game and can can clear it from your backlog without guilt.

If you are looking to really lose yourself in a setting/story and really dig in, then I recommend either TWEWY or Radiant Historia as both cannot be really played casually because of each game's relative complexity (both combat and story wise). Of the 2, if you find using the stylus a lot for combat in a game fatiguing or uncomfortable, play Radiant Historia. Otherwise, play TWEWY as it will be a brand new experience to you unlike Radiant Historia which you have already played a huge chunk of.

I have no experience with DQ games prior to 9 (which is my current most played handheld rpg at 125hrs) so I can't recommend that.

I've never played either game before as kid (though I plan on getting them both through the 3DS VC), I voted for Mega Man 2 solely off the strength off Quick Man's stage music.

Great commentary guys! I just got back from vacation and watched last weeks ND for the first time. Because I missed the initial experience with everyone else, this commentary track was just the thing I wanted. I happily rewatched the ND with the your commentary and would appreciate more of this type of thing in the future for all ND.

I'm thinking TT Fusion is the culprit for the ridiculous load times vs. the hardware being at fault particularly when there are better examples of load times on both systems for games with similar size and/or scope.

163
I agree completely. As a person who despises announcements of games 2-4 years into the future for the long term and an info dump once a year at E3, Nintendo directs have become my own personal E3 with each iteration without the need to wait a year or few for said announcements to come to fruition.

Outside of NWR, I never visit gaming enthusiast sites for Nintendo news because of the often negative connotation said news is presented. With ND, I get the announcements straight from the president's mouth with no fanfare or zany "isn't that cool!" marketing speak from which I can induce my own hype or disappointment based on my own impressions and not through the filter of a middle man.

I hope the other console makers take a page from Nintendo on this one and make their announcements similarly although I doubt they'll be able to match the charm of Mr. Iwata.

This probably won't sound as I intend, but Nintendo are going overboard with the 3DS lately. The system has been selling fine for a while now, it's time to bust out the Wii U games. That's the system that desperately needs games.

You can never have too many great releases and with the 3DS hitting its 3rd year, this is only expected for a system hitting its stride worldwide versus the Wii U which is barely 6 months old.

Excite on the prospect of a 3DS Batman metroidvania and will have this on my radar.  What a year the 3DS is having.

I bought this game a month ago based on the the eShop trailer and price alone ($5).  I expected Legend of Grimrock (a PC first person dungeon crawling rpg) with anime girls and got instead an oddly relaxing experience of a game that I play all the time now in between other stuff.  I'm glad it got a review as I think it's worth it at $5, but I also like cute anime girls so what do I know?

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN Live Panel at PAX East 2013
« on: March 26, 2013, 07:53:43 PM »
I enjoyed the panel and really loved the included video segments that popped up during discussion and adding some well placed reference for many in the audience (particularly the younger crowd). It's a shame questions had to be cut off, the hour went by so fast! I liked Chris' knowledge of game history but I disagreed with his opinion about no new IPs being developed by Nintendo.

It was another great PAXEAST and thanks again guys for signing my t-shirt and Earthbound Players guide.

I'm really interested in picking this up. How much is it?

This will be huge for further adoption here in the west.  I'm glad they are deciding to release this patch shortly after release vs. months down the road when hype for it has died down.
