Was looking at the release list for PS4 from Gamestop and I can't say I'm excited for anything on it now.

Have to agree.  Most of my gaming time for my PS4 has been on games I got on PS+, which out of those Resogun has been dominating my time.  The other PS+ offerings for PS4 (Contrast, Don't Starve, Outlast, Dead Nation, Mercenary Kings) don't exactly leap out as compelling games, but they at least provide a library to spend time dabbling in.

I'm looking forward to Destiny later this year, but other than that, I'm planning on it being there primarily for my 3rd party gaming machine until Sony starts churning more games besides inFamous (which was a bit too thin, unfortunately) that i'm interested in.

General Gaming / Re: What are your favorite video game soundtracks?
« on: April 23, 2014, 07:42:33 PM »
A lot of my favorite soundtracks or music tracks from games come from my fondness as a kid, one exception being Kirby's Epic Yarn.  How can you not love this music?

Some other favorites (in no particular order):

Flower
Take your pick.  All of the soundtrack is spectacular.

Just a quick correction for you Phil. New Super Mario Bros. on the DS was the first 2D platformer in ages. NSMB Wii was only a couple years after that.

It's just that the Wii version was leaps and bounds better.  Not sure how popular an opinion this is, but I always felt NSMB for DS was kind of garbage.

I think the real question is: did Nintendo abandon the core gamer, or did the core gamer abandon Nintendo?

I don't have enough perspective of pre-Wii sales to have the best informed opinion, but everything I've read indicates that Gamecube wasn't a big seller.  Sony wiped the floor, absolutely trounced Gamecube & Xbox in sales, and I think Nintendo saw it as a rational decision that the core video gaming crowd wasn't enough of an install base for them to carve out an install base that was acceptable to their growth aspirations as a business.

To your point, there are several games from Nintendo during the Wii generation that are either geared towards the "core" Nintendo gamer or unfriendly to casual gamers, but I think it's not hard to see that based on the game library that their aspirations was to continue making the Wii a good value proposition to those who bought it primarily for Wii sports, or for their kids.

I also think that the Wii U's misfortunes have less to do with core gamers not thinking there's value in Nintendo games, but in Nintendo's miscalculation that a unique tablet controller at the cost of hardware more in-line with msft/Sony would be a good value proposition, especially when their best touted feature (off-tv play) has been implemented alternatively fairly well by Sony.

TalkBack / Re: Comparing Wii U's Sales to GameCube, Wii

So…I'm one of those people who bought an Xbox 360 recently..I'm typically one to buy a system at the end of its life cycle and pick up a handful of exclusives I never got around to playing.

Not saying Wii U's sales aren't horrible, just saying the 360 is catching more the "I may as well now that it's on its way out" sales (especially since some retailers here have been having good sales on them to get rid of stock, lately) while the Wii U is still the "new" system.

Maybe that makes it worse...

Immediately posting again in TalkBack because you had a typo in the first one is a great way to make way more people notice that mistake.

I'm guilty of this.  I feel like I need to fix my mistake before someone else decides to.

You guys shouldn't get upset over something that clearly never happened.

I'm one of the suckers that bought the Super Mario All Stars Wii Disc.  Although I played the NES version first, I always liked the SNES version best (Colors were a bit too muted for my tastes as a kid).

I definitely have Mario fatigue at this point, having only played through world 3 fo 3D World and stopping out of disinterest.

That said, I'm assuming this 3D Mario game is a ways away, I might be more interested as more details are released.

General Gaming / Re: Your earliest gaming memories?
« on: April 10, 2014, 08:12:57 PM »
E.T. on my brother's Atari.  I never understood how to play that game.

Most of my other early memories are from playing games on my parent's Amiga computer, like Turrican, Defender of the Crown, and International Karate.

Other than that, a distinct memory was watching my cousin & brother play Mario 3 & Punch Out! on the NES and being jealous that they would only let me watch

1812
I don't get all the hostility towards the people who want to play a more "tourney" style experience.  This is even Nintendo conceding there's a benefit to providing options to both sides.  Don't like it?  Don't play that mode, and stop bitching.

Thank god Nintendo decided to create an optional fence around the two sides.  It's too bad the "Final Destination" mode also gets rid of platforms.

Ok, I got a good laugh out of that.

1813
It's a nice gesture to those who like playing smash on a more competitive sense.  In college I lived with a tourney-type player, and I'll have that level & music etched into my head forever now.

I also love how they just call it "Final Destination" mode.

1814
I'll probably be doing more "for fun" games, but I'm so happy to see they're working to provide a good variety of game options for online.

...I guess I'll need to dig up my Wii Lan Adapter, to ensure an optimal connection....It frustrates me they didn't have a wired connection port built-in for the Wii U.

1815
Makes sense, it'll get people too impatient to play new Smash to pick up the 3DS version.  Heck, I wasn't planning on getting the 3DS version, but I may pick it up if I find a good deal for it prior to the Wii U release.

Just beat inFamous: Second Son.  It's sort of a mixed bag compared to inFamous 2, but overall i'd say I had just as much fun as the last one.

The protagonist, Deslin Rowe, is a surprisingly enjoyable character that's fun to play as, and his brother Reggie is an entertaining opposing force to him throughout the story.  That said, the downside is that those two characters are the only ones you really care about.  inFamous 1 had an interesting feel of you unraveling this complex story with a crazy twist near the end.  inFamous 2 had a feel like you were fighting against the clock to prepare yourself against the prophesied beast.  The downside of Deslin being so jovial in trying to get his powers is that there doesn't feel like there's much weight to the story until a pivotal moment late in the story that drives everything towards the conclusion.

The powers are pretty neat.  Deslin's power is that he can absorb the powers of other conduits, which acts a means of gaining new powers.  I won't delve into what powers you get, but they all have strengths & weaknesses.  The best part about the new powers, and this is probably the biggest improvement over the other games, is that they allow you to traverse the city so much more effectively than Cole was ever able to.

Overall, a lot of good fun, if maybe a little less compelling from a story standpoint.  Can't deny it's probably one of the better games for PS4 right now, so I'd say it's worth the purchase.  I'd give it about an 8/10.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Can anyone help a Skylanders newbie?
« on: April 03, 2014, 06:31:56 PM »
I'll be the dissenting opinion: Giants is the best Skylanders game out so far.

That said, if you're looking for a good introduction, then playing them in chronological order is your best bet.  I bet you can get a good load of figurines with Spyro's Adventure fairly cheap at this point, and that's not to say it isn't a good game, just that Giants is a lot more polished, has a a more epic adventure feel, and has the cool giant characters.

All of Unclebob & Ceric's opinions on getting the bang for your buck is otherwise valid.  ;D

General Gaming / Re: Worst impulse buy you've ever had?
« on: March 31, 2014, 09:50:36 PM »
Several years ago, I impulse bought a used Skylanders starter pack because my wife had morbid curiosity about it, and I had credit that made it a cheap initial buy.

Today, I'm afraid to think how much of my overall gaming $$ have been spent for this one series.

Hey lucario, I just found a GIF of you doing what you do best!

The Vita is amazing.
Hey Oblivion, look at sales the Vita doesn't even come close to the ds, has no good games, and a back-touch pad!!! I BACK FREAKIN TOUCHPAD!!!
NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE VITA, GET A BURN HEAL ON THAT!!!!
p.s i can't see your "funny" pic.

That gif is never not funny to me.

And Lucariofan99, quality of a handheld or console to me and many others is based more on the quality of the system and games for it more than sales.  Vita is doing poorly from a retail standpoint, but it is a stellar handheld with some really great games.

PSN ID is in my signature.  I don't do that much multiplayer, but that's mostly because I usually don't have the people to play with.

It's hilarious to me how the internet is losing their minds about this.  Obviously this is nothing but bad for Oculus Rift, and will require a facebook login to use it, and will sell all your information  ::)

Why isn't it possible for people to believe what this probably actually is - an attempt to diversify their buisness portfolio so they're not relying on one thing only (facebook website) to continue their financial securtiy.  You may question why they're going into VR, but them branching outside of their website is the only way they'll have a chance of being a long-term, sustainable business in the future.

In exchange for this, Oculus Rift never has to worry about funding again.

South Park: The Stick of Truth.

It's essentially a Paper Mario game in disguise as a long episode of South Park.  I mean that in the best way possible.  Although the gameplay is simple, if you're a fan of South Park episodes where they go off the deep end a little, you'll enjoy this game.

TalkBack / Re: Walmart to Sell Used Games
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:27:08 PM »
So….the Wal-Marts in my area have very, very small video game sections as it is, and knowing how valuable real estate is in a store, My assumption is that the amount of new stock they carry is going to shrink substantially.  Additionally, i'm guessing there'll be a very specific list of games they'll accept, lowball you as bad as Gamestop on trade-in value, and use a very similar pricing structure to Gamestop on their used prices.

You're going to see those discount shelves with 2+ year old games swapped-out for shrink-wrapped used copies that they can get a higher margin of return on.  Makes sense from a business standpoint.

1824
Can anyone comment as to which of these has the best single-player experience?  I think I'll be voting based on that, considering what limitations the game will have once WiFi is shut down.

General Gaming / Re: I hate console wars.
« on: March 15, 2014, 07:55:07 PM »
While I think there can be an entertainment value of watching people squabble over the console offerings, my sincere suggestion is to not worry about which is "better" if you've already make your purchasing decisions, and simply enjoy your games.  The console is just a delivery system for the games developers offer for them, and moving forward, the differences between them will probably become more and more negligible.
