TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 Review
« on: May 16, 2014, 03:31:17 PM »
I've watched a movie with my friends that I thought was terrible and when I started complaining about it, I found out they all liked it. They'd agree with some of my points but it worked for them they said. It boggles my mind how they could like it despite very clear reasons and examples of stupidity. Now, if we were to write reviews of the movie, my score would be much lower than theirs. However, according to you, I should recognize that other people will rate it higher and I need to adjust my score to be a bit higher otherwise I'm being disingenious and not following the crowd for the sake of trying to display "independent" thought. And heaven help me if I bring down the Metacritic score! Moreover, if I had seen the movie on my own and not with my friends, I'd have assumed that everyone felt like me and would be ranking the movie the same way. How am I supposed to figure out they liked it? Knowing they liked it, however, doesn't change how I felt about the movie or what I think are legitamate complaints against it and I feel like there are other people who would feel the same as me so I'm going to write a review and score it based on my own experience with it. If people disagree with it, so be it, but it's just my honest assessment of it.

What movie are you referring to?  I'm asking both because I'm genuinely curiuos AND it'll spawn more interesting discussion than the bickering over a review score.

The score is a 7.5....not a 5 or below.  I could see why there might be some blowback if the game was actually rated poorly, but it's not, it's rated as a good game with some issues that hold it back from being considered great by the reviewer.

Shoot....NWR isn't even the only sub-80 score on metacrtic anymore.

Doesn't it make possible sense that review for a Nintendo site and most likely have played every single Mariokart game might be a bit more fatigued at the iterative nature of the franchise since Double Dash?

Finally, lol at all the internet crusaders coming to the resuce of Mariokart's metacritic score.  I assure you, you're the only ones that care about the game's metacritic rating, and are making such a fuss over something that has literally no significance.

I was really hoping Ian would make longer posts. :(

If his posts were any longer, the forums would collapse under the weight of them.

OMG!!!1!!1 HOW CAN NWR, A NINTENDO ENTHUSIAST WEBSITE, GIVE OUR LORD AND SAVIOR MARIO KART 8 LESS THAN A 10/10 SCORE?!?!?  NEAL & DAAN ARE UNDERCOVER M$FT/SONY LAMESTATION ENTHUSIASTS OUT TO SCREW WITH THE STERLING METACRITIC SCORE, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT METACRITIC IS INFALLIBLE, AND DIFFERING OPINIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

Good lord, kill the review talkback threads with fire.

I haven't bought a Mario Kart since Mario Kart DS 8.5 years ago and the only reason I'm buying this one is to get my free Wind Waker.

I hate to admit it, but that's why I'm getting it.  I'm willing to take a chance on Mariokart if it's basically halving the price between that and Pikmin 3, a game I've had a lot of curiosity about.

Or maybe Wii Party U….anyone able to provide input on if that game's any good?

I can attest that my wife exhibits those traits when we argue, but is more likely to clearly interpret what I say otherwise.  In those moments, her goal is to hear what she wants to hear when I speak so she can continue fighting so she can "win" the argument.  Usually best to just stop fighting and walk away for a while to let her cool down, at that point.

On the other hand, the male translation theory only applies when I'm trying to do something (clean, play video games, get work done), and my wife tries to hold a substantial conversation while I'm in the middle of something.  it's not that I'm trying to ignore her, it's just that I'm already heavily engaged in something, and I'm terrible at multitasking if I'm actually heavily engaged in something, so in those cases she just comes out sounding like the adults in peanuts.

It's interesting to hear the RFN crew tackle something as contentious as LGBT & minority representation in video games.  I largely agree with Guillaume that I don't trust the current writing talents to make any attempt to make a nuanced gay character that isn't a bad stereotype.

I watched one of the Tropes v. Video Games videos on youtube, and while I think there are conclusions stretched quite a few times in the video, there was one statement that rung true to me: the wish for developed characters that just so happen to be women, not characters whose defining trait was the fact that they were a woman.  I imagine gay/transgendered people would hope for the same treatment of characters that represent them in media.

To call Nintendo homophobic or whatever due to not making it possible to be gay in your random relationships in a kiddy game is just making a mountain out of a molehill. I see many people calling it a life simulation game, but I imagine they don't know about how it works, and think it's a Sims clone.

That said, I sure would like to see a game that attempts to include miscellaneous fetishes on top of every orientation in an attempt to satisfy everybody.

Have people been really calling Nintendo homophobic over this?  I haven't been keenly following this, but while I wouldn't be surprised over the internet making these claims, I would be disappointed if video game journalists did the same.

I'l repeat my stance, from the talkback thread - Nintendo should just not include a gender option in these games, then it wouldn't matter what kind of character you enter a relationship with.

Is the future of nintendo caving to political correctness and just not releasing games like this in the future?

I'll try to tread lightly, because I 1) don't want to be misinterpreted, and 2) don't want to get in trouble for talking politics in the forums.

How is this caving to political correctness?  I sincerely doubt Nintendo did this out of anything other than to quell a potential fan outcry and stem the tide of negative gaming press.  If anyone thinks they were taking any sort of moral stance by not including same-sex relationships in this game, and then back-tracked because of political pressure, then I think they are giving Nintendo more credit than they deserve in terms of their political awareness.

Overall, I think Nintendo handled the issue well-enough.  That said, I'm not one to play games that have any real relationship simulators, so this type of issue usually flies under my radar.

Most respected video game bloggers know better than to make claims like this, but yes, part of the people who turned this into a big deal to begin with are acting like Nintendo is homophobic/discriminatory. I brought up how Japanese people portray themselves as Caucasian in media, and apparently that means they're discriminating against themselves too and have a wrong culture.

That's what I gathered from Reddit's r/games subreddit.

Reddit's r/games userbase is horrible, and their views & opinions are ridiculous.  Doesn't surprise me that they'd made statements like that.

I guess I'd be one of those "Grey area" people.  Bought a Wii U at launch because I wanted the Nintendo games, fully expecting that much like the Wii, Nintendo games would be the best reason to get one (although looking at my current library, it's actually 2/3 Nintendo, 1/3 3rd party, which is a better ratio than my Wii library).

I think Nintendo has this misconception that they're similar to Apple in that they can decide what the consumer wants, deliver it, and the gaming public will eat it up.  The problem is that Nintendo's fanbase who are that rabid is much smaller than Apple's core constituency, so even if they hit gold one time (Wii), if they falter another time (Wii U), then their fortunes fail miserably.

They're a video game company whose games I adore (mostly), whose hardware I've tolerated lately, and whose virtual console & online functionality is lousy compared to the competition.

I've often questioned whether Nintendo actually has a passion for hardware & feature development, or whether they tolerate it as a current-day necessity because they don't see a possibility for the same level of success if they just gave up the hardware game & focused on game development, where they really shine IMO.

But it isn't their hardware, they actually make good hardware, it is their consoles that are the problem and lack of focus. The Wii U has low specs but I don't think that matters for game development especially for Nintendo games for Nintendo they are new specs. That is why their handhelds do fine, they do release the games there people want, with their consoles they act like they take that base for granted. The problem is Nintendo does make great games but they also make lousy games that they just expect you to buy inbetween the great games and while everybody does the same their library is more noticable because they have fewer partners filling in the gaps.

I always intended to get a Wii U, but I find it hard to justify buying one at the current price. Specs or not, the console is still currently more expensive than all their past machines LAUNCHED at and there is no new tech to justify that kind of markup other than the Game Pad which for me is not worth the extra expense. I usually get in the middle of a generation when the price comes down, but the games library needs to pick up too. By the time I got a N64 and a Game Cube they had over twenty games I was interested in and were getting new games all the time, as of right now the Wii U has at most, if I am really going to lower my standards or just throw everything in there, they have at most 12 games I would buy period, that is not enough for me for the cost.

I know Phil gets upset about this and asks questions like why complain on a fansite except that is basically saying I am not a real fan, which is bullshit I love Nintendo and I might not be one of those who feel betrayed because I honestly don't care about them as a company, and like I stated before I already have a Playstation to meet my non-Nintendo needs. Personally I believe the PSX was the true successor to the Super NES and many of us are still hoping that Nintendo will pick up on that. I feel like yes they still make great games but the number of games they make that interest me declines each year. Wii at least had Virtual Console and Wii Sports to get me hooked and it took me damn near three years altogether before I got tired and sold it off, because as usual the games I was waiting for kept either getting pushed back or mentioned once and forgotten about and I personally just got tired of waiting and yeah maybe I would lose interest because damn after three years of delays you forget a game was even supposed to be coming.

I don't hate the Wii U, I just wish it had more to offer for the price. If they slashed a hundred bucks of the top right now I would get it next payday. My reason is simple, that is where the machine should have been priced by now in the first place and is inline with my expectations. I don't care if you like it fine good for you, maybe I was a little harsh in that other thread but I TOO get sick and tired of being told my views don't count and I should just shut up or go away. It is this type of thread this antagonizing that makes some of us come off as more bitter than we really are because your forcing us to defend our position but when we, god forbid, ask one of you to do the same, like I did with UB, i get told to **** off in so many words.

Wow…I'm going to assume much of this is directed towards the actual thread topic, and not myself specifically.

1)  I'm not suggesting Nintendo produces faulty hardware, just that the choices they make in regards to not trying to have near-parity with their competition makes it more difficult to port games, making the barrier to entry for 3rd parties higher (too high considering how abysmal the system is selling).  This tactic works for their handhelds because they have market dominance & inertia…for handheld, if a 3rd party wants to make a game, there isn't much better option than 3DS, because Vita's sales aren't great & mobile gaming is a crapshoot.

2)  Nintendo can't drop the price any further.  They were selling the Wii U at a loss since launch.  They dropped it $50 & started including Mario U in it, eventually added Luigi U on top of that, and THAT still wasn't enough to boost sales significantly.  They probably aren't manufacturing enough systems to get a volume cost break, & I'm assuming they're a ways-off from being able to make their manufacturing process more cost-effective, if just because I'd guess they're sitting on a mountain of inventory, considering how off their sales forecasts have been.

I actually think $300 is a fair value proposition with what they include with the system now.  Nintendo's problem with the Wii U is much deeper than the price, the name, or even the library at this point.  Frankly, I think they've still failed to convince people why they "need" a console with the gamepad, and until they really leverage unique experiences with it and ADVERTISE these new experiences, the system will just continue stumbling along.

3)  I agree that it's a good thing for there to be a diverse opinion of Nintendo, the games, & the systems they offer on this site.  It wouldn't be enjoyable to discuss things here if it was just an echo chamber all the time.  Phil's taking a lot of the negativity here lately as people being dismissive of Nintendo as a whole, but it's just a reflection of the reality we are in at the moment, and that reality is Nintendo isn't doing well to support their system, and nothing they've said since acknowledging there even is a problem really reflects a willingness to improve the situation for themselves or their customers.

I wish Nintendo would do all that you list, but I sincerely doubt it would be a selling-feature large enough to be the tipping point of a console purchase.

I agree with you, however it could help them financially. At least as far as I'm concerned it would cause more of my money to be sent to Nintendo and after the financials they released yesterday they can certainly use the money.

Agreed.  I know i'd buy some gamecube vc games.

1791
I think you can now say there's historical evidence that Nintendo has no capability to forecast their sales.  Coming from Supply Management, I can attest that forecasting is an educated guess at best, but if that's the case, then Nintendo's forecasters have been sleeping in class.

I hesitate to think Nintendo will actually reach profitability next year, unless they expect to reach it by cutting cost above all else.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a large part of the reason Nintendo couldn't implement gay relationships/marriage is because gay marriage isn't even legal in all 50 fifty states, not to mention certain other countries? Although the social issue is unavoidable, it seems to me this was always more of a legal issue.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing illegal about a video game offering virtual gay marriage to states that currently don't recognize it.  These laws usually dictate whether or not the state acknowledges or will allow gay people to marry in-state, and don't try to dictate how you're recognized out of state (virtual included).

1794
It's a little late for this, but Nintendo sort of inadvertently provided social commentary by having a gender selection and then only made relationships possible for opposing genders.

If they wanted to truly avoid social commentary, they could have not had a gender designation at-all, and then you could determine what "gender" you were by what clothing options you chose for your character.

I mean, I have no problem with a games company trying to be apolitical, but at least recognize how your lack of thinking of the subject could have made the implicated stance possible.

What's funny about this to me is that every retailer in my area is struggling to get rid of their current stock of these games…what makes Nintendo think they'll want to repurchase these games just because they have updated labeling.

1798
The most surprising reveal to me here is that Mega 64 still exists, and is less funnier than ever.  I remember finding some of their video game parody videos funny back in 2004/2005.

I'm not surprised by the announcement, but I honestly like a lot of the fanfare involved in the live press conference, and still wonder if moving away from this venue makes them less noticeable in the general gaming press.

This weekend I was lamenting that the PS4 didn't have BC because I wanted to play a game on my Vita...

Or it would at least have been nice if they had figured-out off-tv play directly from the PS3.

General Chat / Re: Do you ever get out of the loop?
« on: April 28, 2014, 12:04:20 PM »
I'd argue that it would be to your benefit to not attempt to keep "in the loop" all the time regarding news, whether it be entertainment, or real news.

I used to watch news & skim through Google news obsessively in college/early post-college years. A few things resulted from it:

  • I was terribly depressed over how insurmountable our problems seemed.
  • I was well informed not just about the important news events, but also over incredibly unimportant things that were made into "news by CNN/MSNBC/Fox News, etc.
  • I spent an inordinate amount of my free time browsing the internet for news instead of spending my precious free time doing something I actually enjoy.
I've been "out of the loop" for maybe about 2 years now, and the only thing I probably keep-up-on is video game news, but that's only because I have an actual interest in it.  I bet you'll also find that if you don't obsessively follow news, the important stuff will rise to the top and you'll catch wind of it one way or another.

Not sure if you're much of a reader, but i'd suggest reading a book titled "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman.  It covers the entertainification of news through television, and while it's a bit aged, its message of oversaturation of information is even more relevant now that the internet has multilplied on the original problem.
