Nintendo Gaming / Re: Predict the Wii U's Holiday Lineup!

Animal Crossing for Wii U?  Might be a way to reuse the assets for the Amiibo Festival game to quickly churn out a "full-fledged" game to launch for Wii U before year-end.

Other than that, I expect that Wii U is just going to just die on the vine for the balance of the year.  Maybe some good bundles this Black Friday along with a price cut finally just so retailers have an opportunity to clear their shelves.

For the dummies & patreon illiterate, anyone mind answering me when are the funds withdrawn from your account each month?  At a cursory glance, I couldn't find this info on the website.

I just realized I've been active on the forums for almost 6 years now..., so if I can get answers to these, then I think I can commit a few bucks a month to a website which has provided me hours of good podcast material, interesting articles to read, and a community which I enjoy being a part of.

How much for The Funhouse?

I feel I might be able to buy that forum property pretty cheaply thanks to the residents living in it.

It sure as heck isn't park place, more of a Baltic Avenue.

Or it's something Justin felt the need to write about.

My comment was in no way a criticism of Justin's article.

The fact NWR felt the need to write an article explaining this tells me maybe I'm getting too old for internet gaming forums.

That, or it's a sign of how starved for something to write about the NWR staff is.

Retro needs to finish the fight that began when they purged all the people who make bad games in '08. So Donkey Kong Country Returns 3 if they're not making something new.

The "Donkey Kong Country Returns" name needs to be old Yeller'd the same way New Super Mario Bros needs to be.

Play something on Wii U virtual console so I can join in! I've only played Order of Ecclesia and The Adventure 2: Belmont's Revenge, and I've played bits and pieces of Symphony of the Wind. I want to join in on the fun!

A quick search nets me the following on Wii U Virtual Console:
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • I'd personally be fine with any but the NES games, I really can't go back and play those anymore without frustration, and think i'd be relying heavily on save states.

I nominate Rondo of Blood for being the best Castlevania.  Might also be interesting to hear about the differences between the TG-16 and the PSP versions.

I'll second your recommendation, as I actually have access to the PSP version.

6) Hold-out hope that they're compatible in a future iteration of Animal Crossing in some way.  Imagine the next animal crossing - the only way you get new characters to come to your town is by scanning the Amiibo card.  Scan the Kappn Amiibo card to waive the fee to board his dinghy, Scan your Tom Nook Amiibo to unlock a secret "Gated Mansion" home upgrade, and your Isabelle amiibo will allow you not only to change your town flag, but also let you choose her wardrobe!

It's a surprisingly small industry. Just because they have a good idea doesn't mean it was because someone sat down in their office and said "Oy! Here's an NX kit." More likely little pieces of information that get brought up casually. All three platform holders deal with the same people, overtime this stuff gets spread around.

Think back to just last week with the PS4.5 stories. People were overheard discussing it casually IN LINE at GDC. The reality is people talk when they're with friends, and people who work at the platform holders have friends in the development space.

I can tell you the industry I work in, we know pretty well when our competition is planning something and presumably they us. We deal with the same suppliers, and we have to tell them our plans so they can prepare. The only time we get truly caught off guard is when we're dealing with a truly new player and they just don't have established contacts.

Just a case of different worlds, I guess.  I also work in a fairly conservative producer in my field as well, so I guess I shouldn't be as surprised when other companies or industry as much more loose lipped.

Right now, in a desperate attempt to move product, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival is on sale for 50%. So, instead of $80.00, it is now $40.00. In addition, the Animal Crossing Amiibo 3-pack of Reese, Cyrus and K.K. is 50% off from $45.00 to $22.50. I'm actually considering it but then I also wonder if prices are being slashed this much already, perhaps I should wait and prices will fall more. The dilemma of trying to get the price possible. I've always been interested a bit in this game but the price for it was ridiculous and even 50% still feels high for what it is.

While I realize that the Animal Crossing Amiibo will most likely be some of the most useless Amiibo produced with probably no application beyond this game, having a few more playing characters for the board game would be nice but is it still $22.50 worth it? Then there's the fear that my collector sensibility will take over and I'll want to get the remaining Amiibo to have all the pieces which will end up making this game cost more than what it seems to be worth.

Would anyone else here take this deal?

I might be the wrong person to discuss this since I bought all this stuff at full price at the request of my wife, but I probably could recommend at least the base game for $40.  Despite Neal's reaming of the game, if you like the personality of Animal Crossing and have enough people who are interested to assemble 4-people game, I wouldn't shy away from getting the base game.

That said, since Amiibo Festival is currently the only game I'm aware that the Amiibo support, i'd personally suggest to see what the going rate is for the characters you want on the used market before taking the plunge on the 3-pack.

As someone who 1) got Wii U on launch, 2) hasn't beaten 4 of my current Wii U games, and 3) Expect to pick up a few of the upcoming games still, I find myself hard pressed to be concerned whether NX comes out this or next year.

That's the downside of Nintendo being so mum on details for the new system.  What's there to be excited over if the future is a big ??

Fun episode, and enjoyed the discussion over rumors.  Syrenne provides a neat perspective as someone who works in the game industry.

That said, while I don't have experience in video game business, I do have a lot of experience in supplier relationships who manufacture product not just for my company, but other large OEMs.  I forget who said it, but I recall hearing someone say that "Sony & Microsoft know what the NX is", seemingly implying that the developers with the NX dev kits would have possibly spilled the beans with them on what is all in the dev kit.

With the suppliers I work with, anything that isn't publicly launched yet is protected under a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), a legally binding contract that essentially states nothing in the works between the two parties are to be shared with any outside party prior to it being to market.  If our supplier broke that agreement and it could be traced back to them, my company wouldn't hesitate to pursue legal action with our supplier.

I understand my field is different from the video game industry, but I struggle to think that game developers would be so fast & loose with Nintendo's direct competitors with this kind of information, if not for the concerns of potential legal action, then because of the ethical ramifications of doing so.  Hell, one of our suppliers has each of their production lines walled off between the customers they serve because of how important this is.

Finished Gravity Rush Remastered and went ahead and cleared the DLC missions after that. Story complaints aside (spoiler alert: I found out there is no "bad ending", that's just the regular ending because really shitty cliffhangers while you wait for Gravity Rush 2 are apparently a thing.) It felt great to control Kat and the game gave you a good sense of progression as she slowly because a bad-ass gravity controlling queen. The gameplay mixed things up well for the most part even if the boss battles were a bit stale. The game's finale doesn't seem as dauntingly hard and even I managed to beat it on my first try. Overall there is something very nice here and I am curious as to how things change in Gravity Rush 2.

I loved Gravity Rush on Vita.  Did you play the Vita version?  Is this distinct from that version in any way?

The story is pretty weak sauce IMO, but the joy of this game came from the gravity mechanic that made traversing the city a joy, even if I felt the enemies & landscape felt pretty one-note.  I can tolerate a weak story again in Gravity Rush 2 if they at least add some variety in that regard.

Zelda's on the NX, right?  We can end this charade that it isn't, right?

I'd be shocked if they didn't at least pull a Twilight Princess on it.  I mean, given the timing, it would seem kinda crazy to me that they'd limit the install base by the Wii U's.  At worst, maybe it's a game that comes out on NX in the future as a digital download option.

It's coming out on Wii U. Let's end the charade that it isn't.

Let's stop pretending that Nintendo doesn't know what they are doing. They know exactly what they are doing.

Guess I wasn't clear.  I meant that it was for sure going to be on the Wii U, but I'd expect it to be a cross-platform game like Twilight Princess was.

I had Madden 13 on Wii U.....but I found I kept getting an issue where my Franchise save file would get corrupt 7-8 games in and would need to keep starting over.

Other than that, Dead Rising 3?  Quantum Break?  I know it's lampooned, but I've heard Ryse: Son of Rome isn't bad if you get it cheap from a friend of Mine.
Who's your friend that can get it cheap?

I know I wrote that poorly.  A friend of mine got it for $10 or less.  He liked it, but suggested to only play it if you could also find a deal of similar value.

I really like Broforce.  I just wish there wasn't so much pixelated blood.  It is actually a pretty dark game for something so simple.

I guess I need to go and add all of you to my friends lists.

Journey looks beautiful, but I just don't know how much is there.  It seems to be an exploration game, but it also seems to be just a get from point A to B...but the trailers don't seem to show any puzzles, combat, difficult platforming or anything.  It just seems like a visual experience.  I don't know if I really would be into that.

Flower I have watched the trailer of that game several times and have never understood what you are supposed to do.

Journey and Flower are similar in that they are:

1) Made by the same developer, thatgamecompany.
2) Are a bit abstract, but with a similar goal as you stated of "going from point A to B".
3) Are visually striking/appealing.
4) Have a great soundtrack.
5) Have a unique gameplay hook.  The differences are that in Flower, you play as a flower petal flowing through fields gathering other flower petals and consistently growing your trail from start to finish.  In Journey, you play a nameless character solving little platforms & puzzles, and there's multiplayer, but no way to communicate with those you encounter online.

I bought Flower and definitely got my money's worth, personally.  Played Journey when it was offered for free on PS+ a ways back.  That said, I wouldn't blame you if you waited for a sale.  I think they're both $15 regular price.

If you don't have a current PC, you might find some games that are Xbox One/PC exclusive currently, like Rise of the Tomb Raider or Gears of War).

Other than that, Dead Rising 3?  Quantum Break?  I know it's lampooned, but I've heard Ryse: Son of Rome isn't bad if you get it cheap from a friend of Mine.

For me, my xbox one has been a Just Cause 2 machine, mostly because I bought just cause 3 and it came with a copy of Just Cause 2 for free.

Otherwise, if you wont be getting 3rd party multiplat games for it and Halo is a "no", you might find it's a Rare Replay machine for you, personally.

Glad to hear you like Rocket League!  It was a PS+ game when it came out, but I would have gladly paid for it if not, it's that fun.

I will say that Broforce, despite its farcical nature, is probably one of the more "NES era" style games I've played in a long while on a Sony system.

Plays like a simple Contra game if it were easier, more varied characters to play as, and if you were able to chip away at the ground/walls like in Terraria.  I've played several hours since getting it, good fun.
