Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo is releasing the NES...sort of.
« on: July 15, 2016, 12:56:16 PM »
I'm more in the market right now to get something that actually plays cartridges.  That said, at $60 if those controllers play anything like the original ones do, it'll be hard to pass-up, even just as a box to put in my bedroom so my wife & I can play some NES before bed or something.

Don't bother

I generally disagree with your opinion of the game, but there is another "gripe-point" you refreshed my memory on, that I DO agree with:

They reuse the same areas for different sections of the game more than they should, and by the end of it, yes, you will be annoyed by it.  Particularly, the reason why they send you back to those areas are particularly frustrating collect-a-thons, although I think they do slightly change the landscape in them (I could be wrong, it's been since the game came out as the last time I played it).

Still worth it to me, Breath of the Wild in some ways seems like a hard re-adjustment from feedback in this game, but I think there's a lot of good experience to be had in it.  I'm REALLY a fan of the first couple of hours, i'd be interested to hear your feedback once you get started.

Wasn't my intent to get a new title, but I accept as punishment for my poor posting after being out of commission for a few weeks.

Does it have a cartridge port?  If it doesn't then this goes from must-buy to pretty much useless to me.  A reliable first party NES would be fantastic but if it's not that why don't I just stick to the VC on the Wii or Wii U?

Seems like an obvious product idea either way that I'm surprised Nintendo didn't think of sooner.

I mean, granted, there's a lot of these "30-in-1" retro consoles that don't, but I think even the latest iteration of the Sega Genesis one had a cartridge port.

Skyward Sword was one of my favorite games of the year when it came out.  I'm not sure if you can avoid its annoyances, as it's kind of part of the core experience.

Fetch Quests before opening up some dungeons.

One redundant boss fight that'll come back several times.

Your companion deciding to repeatedly tell you all the details of an item you pickup, despite having already encountered it.

I personally enjoyed doing this, but you technically don't need to upgrade your weapons/equipment.  That could cut down on some of the fetching of miscellaneous materials within the world.

My buy-or-no buy decision will be based off of:

 • Whether it'll play cartridges, or at least have options to buy more games in the future.
 • How good the controller appears to be, or if the buttons are sticky/tough to press.
 • If it appears that they're flying off the shelves and I won't even have an option to get it later down the road.

No one is reporting on the latest news: Nintendo is not interested in terraflops but content! You heard it hear first. Nintendo is once again stating they are concerned about matching technical specs of the competitors. Cue the rage!

I'm not a graphics/specs whore, but you would at least hope their specifications would be comparable enough for ports from 3rd parties to be a low barrier of entry.  Even then, I expect to be disappointed by the 3rd party offerings, either due to them being not equivalent in quality or by not existing at all.

And I think this is at the crux of Nintendo's problem with 3rd parties.  People who buy Nintendo consoles only buy nintendo games, or at least that's the perception.

General Gaming / Re: What are your games of the show for E3 2016?
« on: June 17, 2016, 09:47:44 AM »
For me it has to be Zelda. I went in with basically zero hype for the game, but they completely won me over and now I'm really excited for it.

This.  I was lukewarm, but I'm ready to pour a lot of hours exploring that Zelda world.

PS4 - Horizon: Zero Dawn is my biggest game of interest playing hunter in a wilderness/future tech mashup, if you don't count The Last Guardian (hypest of games).  Disappointed there's another zombie apocalypse game in Days Gone (enough already).  I'm REALLY curious about Detroit: Become Human, although I know Quantic Dream has mixed levels of success, if they can get within spitting distance of what the trailer implied, i'll be excited for it.

Xbox one - A little curious about Sea of Thieves and the game from Limbo's devs, not much else.

I might be in the minority of this, but nothing for VR interests me, I'm still in the "too much of a gimmick for too much $" category.  Maybe it'll have lasting power with the whole industry more or less supporting some form of it, but It's too much of a novelty like 3D gaming was for me to have interest at this point.

I'm holding off on this game for a while given my backlog, so I'm in a "wait and see" status until some more impressions are out detailing differences between the two versions.

I don't particularly care about what Gender my game protagonist is, but the excuse of "feared it would cost Link his purpose for being in the game." seems a bit curious.

General Gaming / Re: Battleborn or Overwatch?

Update. I went with Overwatch because duh. I really really like it.

I'm interested in Overwatch, but I went with Battleborn.  Definitely not a bad game, my friends liken it to Moba meets Borderlands.  I appreciate the variety & number of characters that are playable, and despite the small user base, haven't had to wait more than a minute or two to get matched up.  So far so good.

« on: June 08, 2016, 09:32:00 AM »
I have a prediction, Zelda U will have a jump button. After thinking about Xenoblade and other open world games, only having auto jump wouldnt work so well.

Oh and the follow ball will be a fairy.

That, and I can't imagine there not being a fast-travel option if they're truly going for a more open world direction.

... did I kill the thread by making a dumb Dark Souls 3 post? : (

I'm gonna start digging in tonight.  Figure my comments/questions won't make it into the podcast with my comments.  I've been eager to dig into the game, but going through a move across that country that's thrown off my gaming hours.

In a lot of ways I think the Wii was the "Trumpiest" of consoles.

Taken not seriously at introduction for not being a serious console & sorely underpowered compared to its competitors.

Casuals latch on to the message and gobble it up, catching everyone by surprise, while the "establishment" consoles (Xbox 360/PS3) witness its meteoric rise.

Nintendo sees Xbox 360 & PS3 as "not competition" mostly because they're blowing them out of the water in sales.

I just show up, read the script, and check my email for Neal firing me.

Well that was something. Just finished listening. Thanks for the painful reminder why it was time for Dr. Metts to get off the show. I really do not need to hear again about how video games are wasting his time and he just wants to be done with them about 30 minutes after starting them.

You would say XCX was fun, but you sure didn't like to go into detail on how it is. But the parts that make you hate the game with every grain of your existence? Yep, you'll let us know in painstakingly detail about those elements.

Metts, I'm serious when I say this, stop playing video games. I don't think they bring you enjoyment anymore. Or maybe your job is sucking your soul out. But you are just a negative Nancy and it was really hard to get through that episode.

On the bright side, you guys were actually pretty mellow on the dire Nintendo investor's meeting. So glad you guys at least didn't scream end of the world there.

I'm afraid i'm going to sound condescending here (which i'm not trying to be, I promise!), but how old are you?  Do you have full-time work?  A wife or children?  Because you get to points in your life with those where any spare time you can devote to gaming is precious, and when you're at those points, you get a lot more sensitive to bloat in games that doesn't seem to do anything but pad the time it takes to progress in it.

Me personally, up until my early 20s, I had ample time every night to dive deep into a game, but 8-10 years later with a wife & children, and i'm lucky to get an hour in every night or so.  A bit hard to take a big bite into Xenoblade with that kind of schedule and be satisfied if you find that you didn't make much progress with the time you had.

My game interests don't usually align with Jonny, but I can appreciate hearing someone struggle to get out of it what someone like James is able to with a seemingly larger abundance of gaming time.

Both of these games are closer to TF2 than MOBA

Haven't played Battleborn, but have played a bit in Overwatch beta.  Agree that it feels like TF2 taken more seriously and more playable characters, haven't played any MOBAs, so can't make a comparison there.

I like treehouse a lot.  That said, the nice thing about the Digital event was the level of polish in the presentation, while Treehouse was fairly casual in nature.  I was looking forward to at least a long-form reveal for Zelda with that digital event shine.

Paper Mario Wii U & Super Mario Sunshine HD.

My selfish hope is you're right about a Mario Sunshine HD remake.  I never got the opportunity to play that one.

AMD said they had three major contracts for the second half of the year, and I was dead sure the NX console was one. Now? Not so much.

Couldn't it possibly still be so, just in late 2016?  I mean, there's a need to account for lead-times between AMD chip production, final product assembly & packaging, & distribution to retailers.  As someone in SM, 3-4 months from production to on-the-shelf availability doesn't seem unfeasible.
