"The reason for splitting Zelda/Sheik and Samus/Zero Suit Samus into separate character slots? 3DS wasn't up to it."
That may have been the reason for for splitting Zelda/Sheik and making Charizard a standalone (there's no way the 3DS could have handled a 4-player online match comprised of only Zelda/Sheik and Pokemon Trainer users, all repeatedly using the transformation mechanic at once)... However, the Samus/Zero Suit Samus transformation, didn't work in the same manner... Since only one Smash Ball appears at a time, only one transformation can occur at a time-- and don't forget that other Final Smash transformations for other characters still occur (Giga Bowser, Wario-Man). They DEFINITELY could have kept the Samus/Zero Suit Samus transformation if they wanted to... But let's face it, the idea was good in theory, but it simply wasn't practical in Brawl. THAT'S reason for the split in Samus's case. Hardware was NOT the factor.

Pretty sure they are nieces and nephews to Bowser.  So, they're all cousins.

I don't know where you heard that, but Miyamoto specifically stated himself they are UNRELATED to Bowser. It came straight from the horse's mouth.

Based on what logic are these supposed to be words we wouldn't want to hear?? I can't speak for everyone,  but I'm more than happy to hear there was a rational explanation.

I'm shocked Nintendo approved of letting the Koopalings appear as Bowser Jr.'s alternates. It completely undermines every attempt they've made clarify that they're not supposed to be Bowser's offspring. Miyamoto must be pissed by this.
I think the story is that they're adopted.
Nope. They're simply Bowser's henchmen-- that's always been the official story for the GAME (just as Bowser's Western name has always Bowser in the GAMES). Granted, they were "King Koopa's" children in the cartoon, but the cartoon was always different-- they also all had entirely different names in the cartoon too (probably in part because of the name "Morton Jr.").

They're definitely over simplifying it by claiming the main reason was  "confusing the marketplace". Since it designed to be in rewritable disk format, and relied on that format to access all the levels, there's no doubt that detail played a bigger role. What I'm thinking is, they originally considered releasing it based on the idea that it was already in English and wouldn't require any reprogramming and would be a cheap port, but upon further examination, that proved not to be the case. So, what it most likely really came down to, was them being too cheap to make the necessary localization changes.

3. Wolf

This is what I'd bet on being the most realistic to happen.
Replace Mewtwo with Snake, and you've got the real final roster... at least according to the leakers. And if you examine the roster image that does seem more likely since considering how the characters are grouped. The group of Pokémon appears complete. The  final row with the 3rd party characters (and Shulk for some reason) has the extra space for Snake to fit in.

There isn't any reason that a character couldn't be DLC.  On the 3DS they just need to let there be enough useable space on the cart or the ability to read them from the SD card.
How about the fact that the character data would be far too big? Not to mention, how would multiplayer work if not everyone had the downloaded characters? Additional characters that aren't pre-programmed in simply can't be added that way. The only kind of data you could expect to be offered in that manner would be texture downloads-- and I think they've already made it clear they aren't planning to do that either (the update revealing they just managed to get Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion skins for Zero Suit Samus seems proof of that)
They can do an update of the game after it is released that you have to download in order to go online.  The download includes the data for the new DLC characters.  Not hard to imagine.
True, but that would only be for ONLINE multiplayer. If they took that route, then the updated versions would be rendered incompatible for local multiplayer with non-updated versions which would cause a lot of unnecessary headaches. Trust me, DLC isn't in the works, you can clearly sense that from previous updates, and even if it was, doing it in this manner would be too complicated to warrant the effort. Seeing how the data for the cut characters found in Brawl led to the exact same speculation of DLC, there's little doubt in my mind that that's the same situation here.

In the original 4chan thread that the leaked screens originated from, Ice Climbers, Snake, Lucas, Wolf, and the Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven on DS are currently being planned as DLC.
The idea that full characters could actually be added later as DLC is absurd-- especially on the 3DS. The only way that could ever happen would be if that were already in the game and that was merely the method of unlocking them. Of course, if that were the case, they would still be shown as part of the full roster. So it's pretty obvious to me that those characters got cut but their names just still appear left over in the game's code (just as Toon Zelda, Dixie Kong, Roy, Dr. Mario, and Mewtwo did in Brawl), and the leaker was merely guessing they could be DLC.

On the other hand, I really don't need this much Fire Emblem in Smash. I always thought the FE characters in Smash were too similar and, honestly, a little boring. So the thought of having Ike, Marth, Chrom, and Lucina, all sword-wielders, seems like overkill. At least 'Robin' seems to be bringing something Unique with his/her Tomes.

I have good news for you then... You misinterpreted the video, Chrom was merely a tease meant to make us think he going to be the reveal, allowing them to catch us off guard with the real newcomers. The end demonstrated, that Chrom will merely be an assist trophy (or possibly a Final Smash). You now have one less sword-wielder to worry about.

It is kinda funny that Chrom ended up the odd man out here and as a result this... kinda breaks the Gematsu leak, which from what I'm guessing is probably an insider who ended up getting relieved of this position over at Bandai Namco VERY early on in the game's development and that his information is outdated.

That's what I was thinking too when I was under the false impression the leaked info all came from a single report over a year ago. But I've since learned that's not the case-- these were multiple reports coming out over time. The one reporting Chrom, Shulk, and Chorus Men was the most recent... and it's no coincidence that Chrom was teased at the beginning of the video. Sakurai KNEW we'd be expecting Chrom because they've apparently identified the leaker and purposely fed them false information this time around. So, the info isn't likely out of date, it was a hoax. Don't expect Shulk or Chorus Men either.

It's going to be Shulk or Chorus Men. Despite the accuracy of Gematsu leak up to this point, I'm still willing to bet decent money that Chrom is NOT going to be in the game. I'm sure he was planned at one time, but since the leak was well over a year ago, it's reasonable to assume of the initial plans have changed and Chrom was dropped for Ike (Adding new FE characters to the SSB roster is tricky since most only appear in a single game, then lose relevance. Marth and Ike have appeared in multiple games, so they'll always have relevance).

Ganondorf shouldn't just get a new moveset, he should be replaced altogether by Ganon (ALttP design). As far as Ivysaur goes, I think you're greatly overlooking its relavance as a fighter in Brawl. I agree it won't likely return as "Ivysaur", I do think the moveset has a good chance of returning and being applied to a different Pokémon, like Bayleef.

Seeing how it didn't show anyone actually controlling the character, it's very likely a cut scene involving an NPC (perhaps Link's brother, whose encounter with that monster is what sets Link on his quest).

« on: April 29, 2014, 11:38:44 AM »
Sorry, but this article is a complete fail. You can't say "no longer", when it's never been canon in the first place. It's never been assumed that anything in the EU is canon, and there have been plenty of instances already of EU stories contradicting each other, as well as others totally nullified by later movies. Disney simply re-affirmed that in preparation for the upcoming movies, as it will apparently contradict some particularly popular EU stories some fans might be reluctant to let go of. It's just a REMINDER, not a change. The films (excluding the Clone Wars movie) are, and always have been, the only indisputable canon stories in the SW universe. Period.

I wonder if the menus are going to be altered to remove the online options....
There's no reason to assume they'd bother, since as long at it's not being falsely advertised on the box, it doesn't matter if still appears functionless in the game.

I wonder if 10 years from now this will be considered a rare label variation with a high value.

I'm not sure about 10 years, but it'll definitely be considered a rarity eventually.

Yes, it most likely IS the reason it's not coming. From Nintendo's view, the freeness of the Spotpass mode was what would have drawn people in. Without it, it's pretty much just a pay-service, and Nintendo isn't going to bother pushing it that way.

It only makes sense if link is telling her not to open the sacred realm and to instead hide the ocarina so ganon can't reach it, even then
No, that doesn't make any sense either since all of that already happened BEFORE the point in time that Link returned to. Now, you could argue that Link told Zelda (after enough time had passed with nothing else happening so Impa would have brought her back out of hiding) that he had sealed Ganondorf in the Sacred Realm, after which, the King sent the Sages into the Sacred Realm after him, and that's where the whole execution took place... The only problem there is that Hyrule Hystoria specifically says he never entered the Sacred Realm.

To me, the idea that Link warns Zelda about Ganondorf when after returning to the past is so flawed, I cringe every time I read it. Zelda already had a premonition about Ganondorf, warned her father, and he didn't believe her. So her going to her father again after being told by Link what she already knew, doesn't make a lick of sense. In addition, Link clearly returned to the exact point when he drew the Master Sword  (the Door of Time is open and the three Spiritial Stones are present), which happened AFTER Ganondorf attacked and Impa ran off with Zelda. Not to mention, that there would be two Links present at once if he were sent back earlier. The scene at the end of the credits was simply replaying the moment where Link meets Zelda for the first time, it wasn't showing new events. I understand how easy it is to misinterpret that scene, but the other facts clearly make that the only valid interpretation. So when Link returns the Master Sword to the pedistal (which closes the seal), Ganondorf is already in the Sacred Realm, thus creating the history for A Link to the Past where Ganon has the full Triforce but is unable to return to the Light World.
