Nintendo Gaming / Any news on the Legend of Zelda movie?
« on: February 27, 2003, 04:58:15 PM »
I think msot anime fans agree that the Pokemon anime SUCKS. It's horrible, and I will personally bash in the skull of every single person at 4Kids found working on a Zelda movie. I'm convinced they all spawned on damp locker room floors and have the IQ of travel soap dishes. I wouldn't trust them with anything sharper than a pair of safety scissors much less a Zelda movie. A god, strike me where I stand lest I am to be subjected to this torture!

You guys will note that PGC cited Nintendophiles who cited the, yep, you guessed it, our favorite Konami message board admin. Not saying PGC is half-assing it- by no means, they were almost certainly checking the credability of the story, but it's interesting we had this guy under our noses for like a month.

Nintendo Gaming / sanity problem in eternal darkness
« on: February 27, 2003, 04:48:14 PM »
It should be a sanity effect, but it's odd that it's lasted so long. I've never gotten an ACTUAL error screen, so I wouldn't know what it looked like. If the screen's been up for some time, it most likely is real (sanity effects usually only last a matter of seconds, not minutes) and you will probably have to reset your Gamecube. Sorry if you lose a lot of progress.

Nintendo Gaming / The Wind Waker to recieve "unprecedented" score from EGM.
« on: February 27, 2003, 04:16:18 PM »
A lot like GTA3 is a understatement, my friende- it WAS GTA3, just with a different city. That's it, that's all. Majora's Mask at least gave us hours of new gameplay with the time feature and the masks to collect Vice City gave us....ummmm.... oh yeah, motorcycle. Now I understand that you're entitled to your opinion, but you have GOT to be intoxicated or something if you honestly think Vice City was so much better than GTA3 and had SO few flaws that it deserved a perfect score while Wind Waker did not.

Nintendo Gaming / The Wind Waker to recieve "unprecedented" score from EGM.
« on: February 27, 2003, 03:51:10 PM »
"Vice City DID deserve 10 10 10, and the guy's reasons for the 9.5 make perfect sense. Besides, 10 10 9.5 is a pretty amazing score. "

WHAT are you smoking and why aren't you sharing? Vice City most definetly did NOT deserve a perfect score just like Majora's Mask didn't deserve any perfect scores. Yes, it's a fun game, but there's almost NOTHING new to it. It's like the equivalent to an expansion pack for a computer game. Only games that innovate deserve perfect scores and Wind Waker does a *hell* of a lot more innovating than Vice City did. Look, I'm not complaining about the 9.5- that's a GREAT score. I just thing someothing's wrong over at EGM if they have the balls to give a REHASH a perfect score over a sequel that actually tries new things. If you can't recognize that, you're far more blind to the fact that you can ever claim I am.

TalkBack / DigiPen Profiled in Rolling Stone Magazine
« on: February 27, 2003, 11:15:07 AM »
I wish I could go to Digipen, but I really can't afford it. My family's not poor or anything, but Digipen *is* a private school, so they need higher tuitions to operate. Unfortunatley their higher tuitions are way out of my league, especailly when I have to factor in out-of-state fees and apartment costs (it's not cheap living in Washington, especially Redmond).

Technically the deal extends to Resident Evil 4 only, but I don't doubt Capcom will renew it afterwards.

Nintendo Gaming / EGM rate Zelda!!!
« on: February 27, 2003, 10:20:47 AM »
Don't get me wrong on my comment- I LOVE Halo (great FPS), and I personally own VC and love it as well, but neither are perfect, VC much less so than Halo, IMO. I agree with Ian that no game will *ever* be perfect, which is one reason I prefer IGN and GameRevolution's rating systems. IGN gives perfect scores to the games that represent the pinacle of achievment in that genre or videogames in general at that time. I believe the only 2 perfect scores they've ever given were Soul Calibur and Ocarina of Time, both of which I agree with. GameRevolution, which has a letter-grade system, refuses to give out an A+ because that believe no game will EVER be perfect. Their highest attainable score is an A, which is still very difficult to get (GR's prety toguh on games).

ialso agree with Koopa- a 9.5 is a GREAT score, but why did Vice City and Halo and Gran Turismo 3 get perfect scores over Wind Waker? I bet even Metroid Prime, my 5th favorite game, is not even as good or as polished as Wind Waker.

"Only perfect games should get perfect 10s. And Zelda: WW is not perfect."

Yeah, neither is GTA: Vice City or Halo, but EGM obviously felt they deserved perfect 10's. Obviously they don't follow your mantra.

Nintendo Gaming / What are the plans for Serial Port #2?
« on: February 26, 2003, 03:22:59 PM »
Like I said, Nick, Japanese companies always plan for far into the future. My Dreamcast and PS2 also have ports that haven't been used. I wonder if the Xbox has an expansion slot.

Termin8: Well, I'm not claiming I'm not a geek or an nerd- I could be described as both. But I think most wll agree were're not like the stereotypical view.

Anyway, back on topic, system bashing really isn't prevalent here- most of us here aren't the type to bash a console, although I won't say ALL of us. Regardless, I think anyone here could express their interest in either a Gamecube or a PS2 without getting any serious flack. Hell, most of the staffers of PGC own at least an XBox or PS2 in addition to their Gamecube (at least I HOPE they all have Gamecubes ).

I didn't read the rpess report, if Rick's getting his feathers ruffled because of my comment/ I'm sorry if I'm causing you "mental anguish", Rick, but I just didn't see squiggles would conflict with their new business plan. Too bad their getting rid of it- I really do think their new design has no real recognizability to it, but since Rick knows so much more about it than I do, I guess it *must* be right.

Cultural definitions of geek and nerd are as followed:

A nerd is someone who is extremely book smart. They get great grades in school and generally aren't troublemakers. They've severely departed from the stereostype depicted in Revenge of the Nerds, but they ARE very smart.

A geek is someone who is obsessed with something. They aren't necessarily booksmart, at least in fields other than their area of interest. these are your hardcore hobbiests.

I myself have been described as a nerd- my GPA is usually 4.0 or a little higher (due to honors classes- I'll be in 3 next year). But I DO have a social life, and a pretty good one at that. I have a close knit group of friends of around 6 or so and innumerous close acquaintances that I talk to every day (it's kinda hard not to when you high school has some 2,400 students). I'm also a geek, as is everyone hardcore enough to go to an internet message board. I'm obsessed with videogames, Middle-Earth flaura (all of Tolkien's work, not just LotR), and Star Wars. Just because you're a geek or a nerd doesn't mean you're annoying or boring- I don't know too many people that use those terms in the dictionary sense.

TalkBack / Analysts Recommend Nintendo Turn Third-Party
« on: February 25, 2003, 05:06:01 PM »
Rick: Sorry about cross-posting, The two threads are very similar and I thought one argument would work for another. Besides, like I said, for some reason we can't edit our posts in this particular forum.

But is Nintendo REALLY more profitable with the Gamecube than Sony is with the PS2? I find that really hard to believe. I know *Nintendo's* more profitable, but that includes GBA income 99.9% of the time. But the fact is Sony's sold more PS2's than Nintendo could ever dream of sellnig Gamecubes, they have 3rd-parties coming out of every spot imaginable, and Sony's blasting into the 1st and 2nd party sector very quickly. Nintendo, on the other hand, has sold very few Gamecube's in comparison, has MUCH less 3rd-party support (with similar licensing fees to Sony, I think), and several of their 1st and 2nd party games haven't sold too well. Really the only advantage Nintendo has right now is their really BIG franchises (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, SSB, etc). Is Nintendo REALLY more profitable on the Gamecube than Sony is on the PS2? Because if it's true, shown with evidence, I'll drop my case entirely. I still think Nintendo could shape themsleves up (even if they ARE grossing more than Sony with the Gamecube, think how much MORE they could be grossing if they were in Sony's position with sales), but I'll drop my case I've presented in both threads.

Nintendo Gaming / More E3 News Here!!!!!!
« on: February 25, 2003, 04:57:56 PM »
Mario: That;s called blind faith, and when left unchecked it often leads to fanboyism. Watch out.

Rick: Ok, I'm not doubting you. I just don't think people should be quick to jump to conclusions just because their beloved PGC didn't say so.

But I agree with kenny- showing a new Zelda *right* after WW's release, especially with an SW2K graphcial style, would only make those borderline buyers hold off on WW and wait for the next one. It's bad business.

manunited: It's the same technology I believe (we all know why it was pulled out of PD). Nintendo showed it off last E3 with Stage Debut, where you could put your face on a character and create a little play with them, or something. I don't think Nintendo's really said anything more about it.

Speaking of corporate icons, anybody see that GE changed their slogan? They changed it from "We bring good things to life", which was an excellent slogan in my opinion, to "Imagination in the workplace". Reportedly they've spent millions of dollars making the change and advertising. Anyone think that was a dumb move?

Also, is Konami still keeping their logo? While I've never been that big of a Konami fan, I've always loved their logo.

It pisses me off every time someone uses the "Nintendo makes more money" ploy when they realize Nintendo's sales are dying. You wanna know WHY Nintendo makes more money in videogames than any other company? It has nothing to do with "family values" or lack thereof- it's the GAMEBOY! The Gameboy, now with the Wonderswan being dropped by Bandai, has almost literally NO competition. The GBA is the fastest selling console in history and I believe it's matched the PS2 although being out for a year less. Just about *everybody* has a Gameboy of some sort, whether it's the original, Color, or Advance. Developers would have to be crazy to ignore this GIGANTIC user base, so they develop a ton of games. Most of them suck, but Nintendo gets licensing fees on every single one. THAT'S how they make all their money. I bet Nintendo's profits from the Gamecube are a joke when compared to the profit from the GB/A. I'd also bet Sony makes a LOT more off of the PS2 than Nintendo's making off of the Gamecube, and soon MS will be making more off the XBox or it's predecessor. Get it through your thick skulls, people, that Nintendo's money does NOT come from the Gamecube. Just because they get a bunch of money off of the GBA doesn't mean they're gonna pour all that money back into a console that's making very little profit. If Nintendo intends to keep it's home console *alive*, it had better learn that 3rd-parties are what matters. Nintendo can continue making their top-notch 1st and 2nd party games, but they need to hunt down 3rd-aprties as if their success depended on it. If you look at any very popular home console, there's one major trend- IMMENSE numbers of 3rd parties. This holds true for the Atari, the NES, the SNES, the Genesis, the PSX, and now the PS2. All had incredible 3rd-party support. In comparison, the Saturn and N64, for example, did rather poorly and had very little 3rd-parties (and don't try to tell me Nintendo made more money in the N64 era than Sony- nearly all of that was from the GBC). Nintendo needs to diligently grab 3rd parties, preferrably 3rd parties with VERY big selling franchises. That's not to say Nintendo needs to drop their mantra of quality, they just shoudln't elt that mantra interfere with getting 3rd-parties (because licensing is really where all the money is made). Luckily they're attracting some big name Japanese 3rd parties (Namco, Sega, Capcom), but they need more western developers (Rockstar, EA, etc). I've heard rumors Nintendo has some sort of deal with EA, but I don't nkow how much truth there is to it.

Oh, and in terms of sales, I believe Nintendo's 3rd everywhere except for Japan, in both consoles and software.  I could be wrong though.

"There is a lesson to be learned here. If these analysts knew all the answers to these questions, why aren't they running multi-million dollar successful companies? Because those that can, DO. Those that can't, play armchair quarterback."

And if you're so sure they're WRONG, Rick, why aren't you running your OWN multi-billion dollar company? To know that they're wrong, you must know what's RIGHT, and yet you work for a *free* Nintendo fansite, Rick, while blindly defending a business that is obviously fumbling in the home console market. I'm not saying Nintendo's doing *bad*, but they could be doing so much better. At the momemnt, Nintendo's an underachiever if I've ever seen one. While I do think that it's not our place as gamers to really worry about sales statistics and of the such, I also don't think we should be *denying* that in terms of home consoles, Nintendo has been digging itself into a hole with grossly incompetent marketing and business recently, and have only recently started climbing back out.

Nintendo Gaming / Question regarding Moblins
« on: February 25, 2003, 12:32:25 PM »
Moblins are more like warthogs, similar to Ganon in OoT but scaled down. The monsters that charged at you in the Forest Temple maze were moblins, as are the monsters that charged you almost everywhere in LoZ.

Mingesium: Two things. First off, I didn't say the *GBA* in particular, but the Gameboy in general, which is true. And second, they DO make most of their money of their handhelds. Between March 200-2001, they made more money of their handhelds than they're dying console. And look at those figures a year later! Profits from consoles is almost halved and handhelds went UP- the fiscal year of March 2001-2002, nearly THREEE FOURTHS of their profits came from handhelds, and that year includes the release of both a new home console and a new handheld. Denying that just shows you're IGNORING the facts. I'm not saying Nintendo's going to die, just that they should get their act together. Handhelds are much more profitable for them and using the argument that Nintendo makes more money than it's competitors is just wrong. In terms of consoles, I'm sure Sony's profits dwarf Nintendo's.

RodTod: Not for a couple years- 2 or 3, at least. Their last CD was in 2000, I believe. It didn't have any new songs, just a bunch of live recordings of older ones (not in concerts but in recording studios). Like I said, if you've seen the Jabberjaw music video Cartoon Network sometimes airs, that's Pain.

Masterpiece: Bah, Cosmonaut's the only song that isn't worknig for me yet. Still, I've been listening to their other stuff all day (and some Sparta stuff that snuck in).
