Nintendo Gaming / Shenmue 3 confirmed, but not the platform.
« on: July 15, 2003, 08:54:28 PM »
To be fair, the game's only been released on the wrong systems. The Dreamcast just ddin't reach enough people and an RPG like Shenmue isn't the type of game XBox owners are looking out for. You're right that it's a cult game and will never achieve huge sales, but Sega could at least get their money out of it (cause they spent a LOT of money on it) and release it on a mainstream system with a wide array of owners, ie the PS2. Shenmue 2 might have sold better on the Gamecube since Nintendo fans are more into it's style, but I doubt the difference would've been drastic at all.

Cubed'll give you a run for your money in a debate, but you have to push him for it.

Magnificent- I've always loved the quiet acceptance of the inevitable the ending theme in MM invoked, and your remix has lost none of that.

BTW, that's a pretty creepy picture you have on your front page (the one with the floating eyeballs). That and "weird" is spelt "w-e-i-r-d", not "w-i-e-r-d", like you have on your site. Just thought you might like to know- I don't even know why we have an I befre E rule if we don't even follow it.

Of that's the only PS2 game that's impressed you, obviously you haven't played Ico- one of the most engrossing and atmospheric games I've ever played. Only problem is it's too short.

This thread has a great point- I just hope it won't attract people bashing the PS2 and XBox.

Overall I pretty much agree with Ian- my Gamecube more than suits all my needs but it DOES have some genre gapes, namely RPG's and fighters, as he pointed out. I own a PS2 to fill in those gaps and I love it very much.

And from what I've heard, most people agree Capcom's "EO" control for Capcom vs SNK 2 was horrible.

General Chat / Did you guys see Banzai yesterday?

Banzai- isn't that the show that's replacing Futurama on Fox? Fox, the f$#@ing bastards, taking away one of the best pieces of animation to ever grace human eyes- if they knew what was good for them, they'd listen to Matt Groening.

I'm actually kind of surprised they're making a third Shenmue at all- I'm a HUGE fan of the series and was really bumemd out to see Shenmue 2 sold like 50,000 copies for the XBox and I thought I remember Yu Suzuki saying that unless they had some outside funding there would be no Shenmue 3. I guess they got the outside funding. As IanSane put it, Sega's going to be aiming for their foot yet again when they go to release it- I REALLY hope they come to their senses and either have it as a Cube or PS2 exclusive or have a multi-platform release. I NEED to play this game.

Nintendo Gaming / Burrnout 2?
« on: July 14, 2003, 12:58:38 PM »
In my opinion, Burnout 2 is worth it for the crash mode alone. Easily the best racer on the Cube yet, and probably will be up until F-Zero is released. It has all the great features of realistic racers but still retains that arcadey exaggerated stylings of non-realistic racers- I'd recommend it to any racing fan.

I had Master Chief down as winning in my bracket, and it appears to be the first right choice I've made in like 3 rounds. I still voted for Felix though, and it's cool that he's actually holding his own against the title character of the XBox.

You didn't have to change it, I was just pointing out my glitchy short term memory.

Anyway, I think it's great we've got a 33 year old mother on the boards- like Ninja pointed it, only the elitest of gaming nerds (those hardcore enough Nintendo fans to actually post multiple times on a fan site message board) come here and it's interesting to see that that title knows no limitations and stretches into all facets of soceity. It's not that far fetched, though- I remember a guy saying his Grandma was buying all the RPG rereleases on the GBA and playing them for the second time (after already having beaten them on the SNES). He also said she'd call him every so often to ask for help on FF8. It really proves that gaming, and Nintendo in particular, are for all ages.

Of course, because Carmack is a MUCH better judge of Romero's character than his highschool friend, who he's known almost twice as long. It's perfectly plausible that Carmack could pick out the intricacies of Romero's persona in MUCH less time than his high school buddy. GREAT line of logic there. All I'm saying is don't judge a person soley on what you see in the news, which is exactly what you're doing. I could just as easily say Miyamoto's a schizophrenic pscyhopath who does shrooms from playing his games.

Gah- everytime I see your link to where you are in America's Army, Ninja, I always think by AA you mean Alcholics Anonymous. I keep thinking "Oh, what step is he on now?", then I think "No you moron, it means America's Army. GOD, how could I be so STUPID! I'm an IDIOT! I'm gonna KILL myself!!" I've got it all sorted out now, though.

Whatever, people still come down on Ion Storm in general, and Romero DID do Quake and Wolfenstein- yeah he's made a few mistakes, but why do people's bad points always outshine their good points? I personally have a lot of respect for Romero and I'd sugegst everyone read the article about him and Ion Storm one of it's employees wrote defending him. I can't give you an exact link now, but I'll find one.

Found it.

A lot of people come down on Romero for Daikatana, but they forget not only his immense contribution to the entire industry (along with Carmack) in the form of Doom, but also the game Deus Ex, by the same Ion Storm, no less. Yeah Daikatana was a huge flop they hyped us up over for years, but Romero's done more good than bad- unfortunatley it doesn't seem like anybody recognizes them.

Nintendo Gaming / How many Links are there??
« on: July 13, 2003, 04:20:55 PM »
Meh, I really don't think the different designs of Links really tell you how many there are- Miyamoto liked to redesign Link a lot, even when it was the same one.

KDR: Do what you like, but Ikaruga is a LOT better than MKDD, in my opinion, and I generally like fighters better than top-down shooters.

Nintendo Gaming / NINTENDO GAMES = BAD REPLAY VALUE
« on: July 13, 2003, 07:09:21 AM »
Quote

I tend to agree with Loyd Christmas. I find most Nintendo games don't have replay value for me. Especially ED. Playing it three times is a poor excuse of game design. That game was not fun.[q/]

Actually, I LOVED playing through it all three times- I played all three right after each other. The special ending wasn't a ploy to get you to play it multiple times, it was a reward for those who wanted to see how all 3 paths tied in together. I happened to love the game and thought it was very fun, and since you *didn't* think it was very fun, you're not one to pass judgement on the game design.

Nintendo Gaming / Just Finished Eternal Darkness. WOW!
« on: July 13, 2003, 07:01:57 AM »
After you've gotten the special ending, in the Chapter Select part you have the option of playing with your character being immune to anything that drops magic, health or sanity- it may have infinite ammo, too, I'm not sure.

Question one: Am I too young? (I disregard ESRB ratings, since SSBM got a T...hogwash I tell you)

If you're reading the Shining and Misery, I think you can handle this game. Truthfully, there's no real horror in the ghost aspect of it. If you want the closest comparison, read the shortstory The Call of Cthullhu by H. P. Lovecraft- Eternal Darkness is pretty much a videogame adaption of it. There's nothing that will really scare you, but it is very creepy and the storyline is very deep- just pay attention.

Question Two: Will this seriously ruin the insanity factor of the game?

Nah- I think I read there's something like 65 insanity effects and I barely experience half of them after all 3 play throughs. There's a good chance you won't even see the one you mentioned, and if you do there's others that are just as good if not better. Just don't go reading about any other insanity effects.

I agreee it doesn't matter that much, but we DID get Burnout from them, which is an incredibly awesome series. Anyway, Acclaim's not cutting all support, just scaling it back heavily, although most of the support we got was, as Hawke put it, half assed PS2 ports.

If you skills are so elite, gup, beat Ikaruga on Hard without continuing- THAT has got to be one of the hardest things to do in a videogame ever.
