First and foremost, the kind of games she plays shouldn't even be a concern. Just get to know her more as a person, find other interests. Personally, if videogames was the only area i could relate to a girl with, i don't think i could have a relationship with her. As much as i love and play games, there's just more to what i'd look for in someone than that.

As far as games, just let her play Animal Crossing on your Cube. That way she's over at your house, you're teaching her how to play, the two of you can be (physically) close, etc. Getting her a GBA and a game seems to be a bit much, but i don't know the situation and just how deep your relationship is with her.

Someone once asked me, if there was a really smart Asian girl, who loved anime, Star Wars, all things ninja, was very smart and funny, and liked to wear schoolgirl uniforms... wanted me. But there was one problem. She was also a MS fangirl. I was asked what I would do in that situation.

I responded after thinking for less than half a second. I would tell her to get lost. But I also mentioned that the odds of that happening were extremely remote, as I couldn't even get a white girl with none of those qualities, and at the rate Xbox is selling in Japan, I doubted if such a person even existed.

You left out "...was at least moderately attractive." But you're kidding, right? After you two start dating, you'll have plenty of time to play GC games with her. i can't see her not liking anything on the Cube. And if not, it's not like she kills kittens for a hobby. i'm a vegetarian and i've never once dated a girl who didn't eat meat.

Yet another thread sucked into the gravitational pull of the PSP.

So none of you are even thinking about buying the PSP?

Actually, i've emailed NCS and had them put me on the call list for it. i didn't put any money down, so there's no commitment. Whether or not i'll go ahead and buy one depends mainly on Sony.

NintendoKID: Good luck on your decision, and enjoy your PS2. At $80 for a PS2 with three games, i hope you don't have any problems with it; used PS2's aren't quite the most reliable systems. i'd recommend some good games, but that's a discussion for another forum (or site completely).

i can't believe some of the posts in this thread. NintendoKID was just saying goodbye. If you want something more than Nintendo games, or if you want online games, then a GC isn't a good choice. IConversely, if you want to play Nintendo games, then the Xbox and PS2 aren't good choices. i don't know exactly how long, but NintendoKID's been on these forums for a while and was also on the old forums. It's not like he/she registered just to slam the cube.

Sounds like an error in translation to me. i think the comment was meant to say "it wouldn't be considered cool to play a GBA [but the N-Gage *is* cool]." i'd really like to see how playing Sonic on NG is any cooler than on GBA. Maybe they could team up with Pepsi Co. and use Mountain Dew ads to show how extremely cool it is to play NG while slamming a Dew while snowboarding down a mountain in your boxers.

i play my SP whenever and whereever i want. i get a few comments on it; some think it's a PDA, other think it just looks cool. i think the popularity of the SP with older gamers proves that the Gameboy isn't "just for kids".

Resist mind control! Thats all this sort of disinformation really is. It's also nothing more than aggressive marketing spin. Arm yourself with knowledge!

Advertising/marketing is often a form of programming. All companies do it to get you to buy their products and/or services. The main thing is that there's some companies we don't mind doing it compared to others.

Regardless of how good (or bad) the system is, it's success will be limited by lack of cell coverage from compatible carriers. Granted, you could buy it just for the games, but at $300 only the insanely hardcore will apply.

232
None of the LCD screens for consoles (at least, not for the Cube) support pro-scan.

Finally, with "GameBoy Future" waiting in the wings for release in 2005.

Could you please post a link where this was announced? i notice you're quick to point this out in ever slightly relevant thread, although from what i can tell there's been no official announcement.

Aside from the hard surgary crap that makes up the details of the pops, the rest is pure chemical deliciousness.

Mario has a delicious fruitiness to him, while Donkey Kong tastes decidely like Coke. Yoshi's yummy appleness is ironically offset by Link's distinct arse flavoring. i'm not sure what flavor he's supposed to be, but i think it involves the blood of demons.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: nintendo's next system
« on: June 11, 2003, 08:34:05 PM »
Before even beginning to speculate on "what Nintendo's next system needs", it's important to know just what Nintendo plans to do with the system. Portable, games-only system like the Cube, a multifaceted digital entertainment system like the Xbox, or something completly different? If it's portable, a hard drive isn't such a good idea. And if it's a digital entertainment system, just what tricks besides games and DVD playback will it offer?

i like Nintendo's current modular approach to gaming consoles. i don't like their lack of support for their add-ons, which becomes more evident with each purchase. After nearly two years we'll finally have first party broadband support. The GB Player is a little disappointing though it's still new, so improved developer support could be on the way, but i'm not happy with the fact that you can't currently link two GBP-equipped Gamecubes as you would two GBAs. Nor am i happy about the lack of communication between the GBA and GC for games like Metroid Fusion. [i'm aware of the fact that you can do this with two GCs.] For a company that focuses so much on connectivity, it's practiced in a limited fashion. If Nintendo goes with another modular system, they must have better support for the add-ons.

If Nintendo is going to go the route of Hardcore gaming machine, why o why do they not market themselves that way? THe hardcore gaming machine idea could work with effective advertisement. I think that is a harder way to go though, and only appeals to a niche market.

No company needs to sell to their hardcore market. Many of them are early adopters, and even if they're aren't up on game news and don't buy the system at launch, they'll still buy it before Joe Casual. If appealing to a niche market was enough, Sega would still be a hardware manufacturer.

i don't know how i managed to do this, but in the final fight i had Mario vs. Sonic. The fight before that pitted Sonic versus Samus, and Mario versus Megaman.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why not a Viewtifull Joe Advance?
« on: June 11, 2003, 08:27:36 AM »
The graphics are 3D, yes, but the gameplay is decidedly 2D. The only thing that might not translate well to the GBA is  the characters. When using zoom or slow-mo, the detail in characters is apparent on the GC version. To recreate that on the GBA, you'd either need several prerendered frames, or cel-shaded characters, which haven't been done on the GBA, especially at that size.

VJ on GBA is a definite possibility though.

If you like a good, old-school shoot 'em up, try GUNVALKYRIE. Mastering the unique control scheme is essential to getting far into the game, but once you do, it's an experience few new third person shooters can match. There's a lot more technique to it than meets the eye, and the gameplay is challenging, but very rewarding.

Rent Hulk first -- i played it EB for a half hour (maybe more), and it felt like rental. A good game that's not too deep but fun for a couple of days.

Preference in gaming systems is pretty much all opinion, although there's sometimes logical reasoning behind it. PS2 makes a better second system than Xbox for me. It's the lack of Japanese support that hurts the Xbox in my eyes. Outside of Sega games, there's not too much i want on the system. Most of the games i buy and play are Japanese-developed, and i my taste in games is more in line with the Japanese than other Americans. Just my personal preference.

Congrats on your purchase, and regardless of what people say, enjoy your Xbox.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: GCN Succesor Takes Shape
« on: June 09, 2003, 02:48:18 AM »
i still think people will pay more for something they feel has more features. If price was such a crux for consumers, then the GC would be consistently beating the XB in system sales. And if a lower price at launch mattered that much, GC would've creamed Xbox in launch sales. i also think Nintendo's trying to increase the value of buying the system by adding a free game, or bundling the GB Player instead of simply dropping the price.

General Gaming / RE: Mounting GCN on wall?
« on: June 08, 2003, 09:32:15 PM »
i was thinking of mounting mine vertically within the shelf i have all of my systems on. The initial concern i had was with the laser and malalignment, but given that the GC is meant to be moved about, i think would be less of an issue. There were no warnings in the GC manual saying that the system must be oriented any particular way either so...

i would suggest some sort of wall mount. The Velcro may hold together, but it may not hold to the wall, especially if it gets hot. i had a dry erase board and corkboard that fell apart due to the heat in my room. You could attach the cube to the mount, or make a sort of cradle to hold it in place, as i'm thinking of doing. This way, it's easy to remove the system if you need (say you want to add a Gameboy Player), and day-to-day tasks like switching games doesn't tax the Velcro's adhesive.

You need to decide how you'll orient it, and how you'll deal with wires. It's a good excuse to get Wavebirds, if you haven't already.

General Gaming / RE: Smilebit - what are they up too?
« on: June 08, 2003, 08:41:57 PM »
If you believe the rumor mill of a time long past, Smilebit was working on an exclusive Jet Set game for Cube. Strangely, they've had games on every platform from Dreamcast, to PCs and mobile phones, but no Gamecube.

i'd severly love it if they made a JSR game for Cube, as long as they kept the gameplay along the lines of the first game, and not the Xbox successor.

Sprite is to Sprite Remix as playing Gameboy games on your Gameboy is to playing Gameboy games on your Gameboy Color. There's about as much tropical (or whatever flavor that is) taste in it as there is citrus. Don't waste perfectly good gin on that stuff. Don't even waste perfectly bad gin on it.

Concerning the job issue, i'm right there with you. i've downgraded to accepting anything, which includes Wal-Mart. i suppose that includes fast food service too, but i'm somewhat of a vegetarian, and it just seems very wrong. In any case, tomorrow is "job hunt Monday" again. Time to get the ol' shirt 'n tie ready.

Consider yourself lucky for getting the demo disc. i went to EB and they weren't selling them separately, but the guy told me to check Circuit City. Circuit City didn't have any copies. i checked the nearby Target, but they didn't even receive any. i guess i'll check the pawn shop tomorrow (ya never know), but if they don't have any, i've exhausted all my sources in a 30-mile area and will have to resort to ebay. On a related note, my ebay auctions have been going fairly well, considering the crap i'm selling.

i finally got my Psychic Force 2012 back from my friend. After a quick session of Rez, i'll pop it in, and once again, for the moment, life will be good.

TalkBack / RE: Free Gameplay Movies from E3 2003

Personally, i want the highest-quality videos possible. DiVX is likely the best choice in providing lower file sizes while keeping higher quality than MPEG-1. i'm on cable now, but i was on dialup before and had no problem downloading large files, so i know what it's like to wait an hour for a video.

Obviously, there's many people here whose computers won't play DiVX files well, or don't have high-speed connecitons. If anything, i think you need to poll the PGC audience to see what they want, and to see what you will work best for you.

i think DiVX would work best, despite the fact that it requires CPU power. You can download the player/codec for free, and use free tools to encode in DiVX, although i'm not

The server is extremely slow. Maybe you should use bit torrent.

i was about to suggest this myself. The only snags i'd forsee is that it requires a separate, although free and ridiculously simple, program to install, and the fact that there'd need to be some education on how to use it. BT links would have to be released alongside regular HTTP links in order to ease people over to BT. Just a thought, but how about offering “regular” (MPEG-1, WMV, or whatever) downloads via HTTP, and high quality DiVX files via Bittorrent? I'd wager that the users familiar with BT have higher-end computers than others. That way you serve both audiences, while not killing your servers.

i'm still waiting for 1080 to download. Slow...

i'm not sure which is the "official" Gamebit replacement, but one of those small screwdriver sets usually has one that fits well enough, although you'll bend the tip of the screwdriver a bit.

If you haven't already, press all the buttons on unit to see if they feel odd or if one feels at all different from another. Rattling in a device as tight as the GBA means something very minor (like a support) or very serious (like something that was part of a circuit).

i say open it up, and see if you see anything's loose. Chances are, your warranty doesn't cover accidents, and Nintedo will likely charge an amount almost equal to the cost of a new GBA. Give 'em a call and see if you can get an estimate.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nokia N-Gage v.s Game Boy Advance SP
« on: June 02, 2003, 01:18:35 PM »
While i'm a big fan of convergence and portable technology, i'm not excited about the N-Gage (NG here on). The current lineup of games isn't compelling, which kills the gaming element of the device. MP3 playback is nifty, but you have to remove any other cards plugged in and current MMCs (multi-media cards) top out at 128MB -- too small for my tastes. Also, GSM coverage is still spotty in the US; non-existant where i live, so i couldn't even use it as a phone. I like the concept, but the execution, especially for Nokia, seems really sloppy.

Frankly, i love Snake (the first one); when i had a Nokia i'd play it when i was out. If i want something deeper than that, i'll bring my SP. The majority of the time, i'll choose a device with a single use and high quality output over one with multiple uses but lesser quality. The GBA only plays games, but it plays them well.
