so im just one flame away from completing the master sword...I'm about 25 hours in. That scares me because from what i can tell from discusion of this game are 2 things.

1)this game is aparently 40 hours long.
2)there's lots of filler aparently

I doubt Nintendo would want to split its message with the Wii U coming out.  The New Nintendo Product should be the Wii U.  Not a 3DS Revision.
agreed. I would be very surprised if the 3ds revision comes out in 2012. 2013 seems more likely.

I like what Ian had to say about integrating online rail shooters and free range shooters.  Nintendo did that already, but always just as a single level or an end level scenario.  How about having a game that Incorporates both seamlessly and creates multiple instances of it.

One level could be a race to a hidden base...as you go you find out that someone is stalking you or trying to stop you.  This battles starts as an inclusion to the on rails section...but a trap is set against you and you are now in a fight for your life.  You go into a free range battle and as you overcome the battle...you damage your attackers ship...and they begin to flee, into a nearby asteroid field.  You chase after them shifting back into an on rails race through the asteroid system.  The battle ends in a boss fight in traditional Star Fox manner.

that actually sounds like a good idea

You are thinking about it like a script-writer and not a game designer. A game designer shouldn't give two shits why Andros is evil. He shouldn't give a **** about politics.

just sayin

Well I agree in that Starfox shouldn't be taken seriously, but that aproach isn't a bad thing for a game designer to have if he/she is setting out to do a serious game. I can count all the videogame stories I actually cared about with my fingers.

but back on topic taking that approach to the story is better suited to games that already take themselves seriously. The main reason Other M bombed wasnt because it had a story it was because Sakamoto is a horrible scriptwriter.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
« on: December 14, 2011, 07:08:00 AM »
I've gradually started finding the Studio Gibli titles increasingly tiring to watch.  Their animation may be good, but the animators only know how to draw maybe half a dozen different characters.  I swear half their movies star the same girl with a slightly different hair style.

And just about every Gibli film that involves Miyazaki has an overbearing environmental message.  Yes, Miyazaki, we get it.  You think mankind is evil, and the planet would be better off with them having as little an involvement as possible.  Guess what?  I don't care anymore.  I'm sick of every movie you do being about the evils of MAN!!!

And I actually thought Kiki's Delivery Service had a good ending, too.

Agreed. especially about the character design.  They're great for shutting your brain off and looking at the pretty animation or when you just want somthing light hearted that wont challenge you but ultimately you only need to watch a handfull of Ghibli movies to get the gist of it. Although Grave of the fireflies was pretty awesome.  (I dont think Miyazaki was involved it this so go figure)

also you should watch pom poko. It beats you over the head with an environmental message but it does it with such class. It's worth sitting through just for the Culture shock value XD

@Broodwars:

Totoro! Don't forget Totoro! It doesn't really have an anti-man/technology, it's just a simple story about a two girls who are going through a rough patch and are befriended by adorable forest creatures. Also, the umbrella scene!!! Seriously, Totoro is one of my favorite movies ever. It just makes me so happy.

don't click this link unless you want your childhood ruined. It's a pretty creepy urban legend about this movie.

i would be really happy if the next starfox game adopted the puppet art style they had for the posters back in the day. Just because the starfox story is already silly and making it seem serious like they have for the last few games is really cheesy. Might as well go for intentional camp than unintentional.

yeah i know it would never happen but a man can dream XD

I guess I'll just settle for this.

Radiant Historia
Chrono trigger meets string theory

To me a good RPG is a good story, which is why i tend to dislike JRPGs since they tend to force feed you through 20 minutes of text/cut scenes whether the story/dialogue etc... is good or not.  Thankfully this is one of the few JRPGS with a story line that I actually gave 2 shits about.  It's not perfect, there are some plot holes and the like but I still enjoyed it.

The fighting system is enjoyable as well, Radiant Historia uses a grid battle system which allows the player to push enemies into each other so that another party member can damage multiple enemies with one attack and a combo system that ups the damage and experience points the longer your party can land successive hits on an enemy in one turn. Because of this fighting battles aren't the typical menu simulators you might be used to and brings an element of strategy to them.

The music is excellent in this game as well however my one complaint is that there isn't enough of it so you'll be hearing the same tracks very often.  I guess hiring Yoko Shimomura for the job got a little too pricey for Atlus. Speaking of which since this is an Atlus game you probably wont be able to find it. I was lucky in that I found a random copy sitting on the DS shelf in a best buy. If you ever find yourself as lucky as i was buy it immediately. Even if you don't want to play it you can easily sell it for a profit.

9/10

If you had to choose 1 of the many jrpgs on the DS this is the one. (assuming you've played Chrono Trigger in one form or another)

final time: 41hr 27min
170/236 nodes, party ~lv50

this is a good thing. with new people up top we're going to get fresh ideas, maybe even new I.Ps

There are close-quarters maps like Seinne Crossing, Tehran Highway, Operation Metro, and Grand Bazaar. Also, Damavand Peak is pretty small. There you have to contend with mortar spam.

Operation Firestorm, Caspian Peak, Norsharr Canals, and Kharg Island are quite big and not helped by the 24 player limit on consoles.

for me its the opposite, i love the big maps with vehicles running and shooting each other, and i love how its possible to sneak into capture points because since i suck at this game I have no other choice but to be stealthy etc etc...

what i hate is the fact that this game has a serious camping problem and its amplified in small maps. It's why i couldn't get into Counter-Stike back in the day.

Dear 'Pom Poko',

You kick ass.

Transforming ballsacks.
that is all.

Japanese mythology is so awesome XD

yeah im going to agree with Ian about other M, the main reason that i was disappointed in that game was the un-skipable cut scenes with the horrible dialogue and voice acting. It was like watching a bad anime :/ unfortunately it wasn't funny it just made me depressed (metroid is my favourite franchise) the 1st person was bad but i could deal with that if it wasn't for the cutscenes.

What I would want to see is a game that went back and followed in the footsteps left by Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64

I know im late for this reply but you should check out Goldeneye source. It's a faithful remake of the Goldeneye 64 multiplayer and its online.

Disappointing lack of Ivy footage in that montage. LOL

Good 'ol Ivy.I loved sould calibur 2 it was the only fighting game i've ever actually gotten good at.  Anyways now I feel like re-playing RE4. I bet i can find the wii edition for like 10 bucks now.

I want Nintendo making things that aren't already done to death by third parties.

Agreed. I'm pretty sick of FPS' at this point, i'd rather it go the way of the platformer and let another popular genre take over.

As for Retro they're my favourite developer outside of Nintendo themselves whatever they make I'm sure I'll be happy with. I guess if they aren't doing an original I.P I'd like to see them take on a franchise that has been neglected for awhile just like how Metroid was before they worked on Prime.

Reader Reviews / Re: How do you use your ratings scale?
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:26:01 PM »
Lithium, by your own scale you have overrated Custer's Revenge. Even if I was on drugs, I wouldn't given it anything higher than a 2. If you completely ignore everything else about the game and rated just the gameplay alone, I wouldn't give it more than a 1. It's a game of Frogger rendered nearly unplayable. ET has more broken gameplay elements than it. Even as "porn" it fails.

The only value it has is as a torture device where other people play for our own amusement like the Roman days of old where men fought each other to draw blood with the chance to see the spectacle that is death.

Fortunately for Custer, it doesn't get a 0 because it runs and it is a game.

it gets a 3 because i find it hilariously bad and because of that im having fun at it's expense because of the very concept of that kind of a game on Atari. where as the rest are bad and not hilarious. Seems pretty consistent to me. It's like how people like to watch really bad movies to laugh at. Considering how im not a professional reviewer i dont need to rate gameplay just how much fun im having.

ultimately whether or not you agree is irrelevent because its my own personal scale. I made this thread because i was curious to see how it differs from person to person not to say "this is how every and all scales should be" I'll just leave it at that because this thread got derailed right from the get-go.

Many people like to talk about these famously bad games, but have never actually played them. So he is asking how many people who talk about them have played them.

I played them via emulator because of their infamous status. (Basically the same answer as before  just less vague)

I don't know what Custer's Revenge is...

Custer's revenge is this hilariously bad porn game for atari

dont you hate how the backspace key doubles as the back key for browsers?
then you lose a post you spent about an hour working on?

so screw that. I'm just going to make a quick version.

post how you use your ratings scale here. I'm curious to see how it differs from person to person yadda, yadda, yadda, words, words, words.

so here's my own personal scale:

10 one of my favourite games of all time/generation
examples: Half-life, Metroid Prime/Super

9 while not an alltime favorite it is worthy of high praise.
examples: Viewtiful Joe

8 worth more than the sum of its parts and/or a great memorable experience
examples: 999, Killer 7, No more heroes 1 & 2, Phoenix Wright

7 a good game
examples: professor layton: unwound future

6 above average but will be hit or miss for most. Or good, but shallow.
examples: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Metroid other M, Punch-out

5 average, bland but not good/bad
examples: Counter-Strike, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2

4 below average
examples: most 3-d sonic games

3 so bad its good
examples: Custer's revenge, Night Trap

2 I hate this game
examples: Shovelware games i rented in hopes it would be a 3

1 Single Indian Tear
examples: E.T

0propaganda games with malicious intent
but 0 is a theoretical score since I wouldn't actually play those.

Then I started writing about the factors that influence how much i like a game the most but whatever, just pretend there's a good paragraph or two under here.

Long story short its the Story and World/Art Design that influence me most.
