you could always settle in the uninhabited parts of Canada if you hate us Canadians. Only problem is that it's uninhabited because it's too cold even for us XD Either that or you could clear out a bunch of forest in the warm areas and piss off a bunch of environmentalist yuppies

but if you can stand to tolerate us you'll find that in summer the temperature is usually around the low 80s and high 70s in the summer at least where i live (I even did the conversion for you!) although you'll probably go crazy due to the clean streets and low crime.

i'm not that old (i'm 21) but one notable difference in my gaming habits from when i was a kid and now is that my preference switched from liking long games to preferring short games. Much of that has to do with game filler reasons, the only exception to that was Xenoblade, since it was the only game i played that was that long which didn't have any filler.

but now I'd rather have a short, taut game experience that's high quality than a long game to give me "bang for my buck" a lot of that has to do with having my own money. So now its less finding games that bring monetary value than it is finding games that are worth my time. Because of that I tend to be a little harsher than others when deciding whether or not i liked the game or not. I also tend to be harsh about game stories for the same reason, especially if the story is delivered through unskipable cut-scenes/scrolling text, if the game developers are going to force me to sit through that then it better be worth my time or else that's a knock against the game (but if the story/dialogue is actually good then i'll forgive it) when it seems that most people are willing to forgive bad game stories

outside of games themselves now i never keep up with game news, i prefer reading features about games and then getting the news from word of mouth from forums and podcasts.

General Chat / Coursera
« on: August 01, 2012, 01:28:22 PM »

Well it was after watching this recently updated Ted talk:

that i discovered this website called Coursera, its main goal is to bring the university learning experience to your computer for free I recomend that you watch the video because it's a really awesome idea. It got me excited enough to sign up for this course pretty much as soon as the video was over
https://www.coursera.org/course/programming1 (and then write this post)

I've already been Using Khan Academy a similar(ly awesome) website (online learning) but it isn't really structured like a course it seems geared for interested people to learn about certain subjects. So this whole thing isn't new to me, but still i know first hand that Khan Academy is awesome, and i hope that after i use coursera that it'll be even more so. Figured i should take the opportunity to tell you guys about these two websites.

I keep all my old systems, the only exception is my n64 which my dad threw away because he never thought i would use it again. I never forgave him.

what i'd probably do is i'd just put the wii back into it's box and put it along side my windowsill shelf with all my other old systems and controllers. Not going to bother with selling it since there's so many wiis out there and with no one wanting to buy them anymore the value would be pretty terrible, but it at least has/will have sentimental value to me.

also I've decided not to buy a WiiU so there's that.

the zune player works, the zune mp3 player doesn't (I have the Zune HD)
which is why i've been listening to the "inferior" mp3 feed.

I'm listening to the forum cast in instalments, 3 hours is a lot to go through! I did enjoy the Mass Effect Conversation though but unfortunately the M4a format doesn't work on Zunes i just get an error message and it doesn't play. well, AAC files play on zunes but as soon as it has chapters it doesn't know what to do.

I'd rather Majora's mask be done, there's tons of people who never played it and the engine is already done thanks to the Ocarina of time 3ds remake

The Cat and the Coup

It's a short but sweet game that will outline the fall of democracy in Iran and the rise of the Shah and the current Iranian Regime, it's an 8 because it's a good game that's free and will only take 15 minutes of your time. try it out.

Limbo

Yet another highly over-rated indie game steeped in "try hard" art house pretentiousness while actually just being something that any art student could come up with. The gameplay seems comprised of a series of cheap death traps that don't actually feel all that satisfying to pass through since you get the sense the level designer just wanted to say "HAHA KILLED YOU". Despite it's sloppy controls, the cheaply designed levels and the pretentious art school project vibe it comes together is a way that is at least a step above mindlessly flipping through TV channels as a way to kill 3 hours in a boring day. Sure, It's an above average game, but nothing more.

Super Brothers: Sword and Sorcery
A game with an interesting world that draws heavily from the Legend of Zelda With excellent sprite work and good music, However the gameplay isn't there to back it up. with obtuse puzzles you'll end up wasting a lot of time literally hunting for pixels, most of the time even when you find said pixels they have to be clicked/touched in a certain order as well. While I understand that this was built with the limitations of the Iphone in mind the "puzzles" came across as poorly/lazily designed and fairly random. The game while only 4-5 hours long will actually end up taking a lot of real world time to complete since about half way through the game you can only progress the game during certain moon cycles in real life, seems interesting on paper until you realise that it could take a week or so until you can play the game again and progress the plot.

Try this game out if you got it in a bundle, but by itself I couldn't recommend it if it costs anything more than a dollar.

5/10

Dear Esther

Never mind the narrative, while good the main reason to play this "game" is if you feel like going for a walk on a beautifully mapped island. While going through Dear Esther I got a big Fragile Dreams vibe from this game: melancholy, beautiful and very lonely. When i talked about Fragile Dreams i said that they should have taken out the combat (and filler) of that game and it would have been an enjoyable game. Dear Esther is just that. Get this game if: You can get it for very cheap (i bought it for $2 on a steam sale) and if you enjoy hiking, taking walks or just enjoy aimlessly wandering around environments in other video games.

Decided to use a lot of images because if these games have one thing in common (besides being indie games) it's that they're really nice to look at.

I loved the editing on the Millionaire segment, got all the music, sound effects and everything. Even though I enjoy the Jeopardy segments it always feels like its missing something without the music and sound effects edited in. Although I haven't listened to the newest Jeopardy so i don't know if that's in there now.

next you should do family feud

TalkBack / Re: The Great Pre-Wii U Backlog Saga
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:42:46 PM »
i cleared off my wii backlog earlier on this year, but i tend to do backlogs differently than everyone else on this site/forum it looks like. My backlogs are more like bucket lists and i only buy a new game when i beat the one i'm playing.

However i've made a recent exception to this rule because of the newest Humble Indie budle, then with the steam summer sale I bought Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Trine 2 and Dear Ester. So I've accidently started an Indie Game backlog haha

You can check out my backlog here if you're interested

Kids don't visit Nintendo forums. They are too busy playing Halo and COD on their Xbox 360s. Nintendo is too "kiddie" for them.

A couple episodes of charging up while talking about how powerful their next attack will be. My bad, I thought filler and my mind immediately went to Dragonball Z

General Gaming / Re: Game Collection Sells For Over $1 Million
« on: July 15, 2012, 05:46:04 PM »
I doubt anyone would pay over a million for a videogame collection if they were only moderately interested.  Who would pay that kind of money to let this rot in their basement?

Completely agree, the only reasonable explanation is that someone is starting a museum like Spak-Spang says. Either that or they plan on donating it to a museum since they have more money than they know what to do with.

There's also the Indie draw. Indie developers can probably get a bigger cut of their sales from this thing than Xbox Live or PSN. That could help draw in some hardcore gamers, though probably not very many.

How many of those people aren't tech-savvy enough to hook up their PC to the television and play a much wider indie library that way without spending $100?

speaking from personal experience here most of those games don't allow you to launch from a 2nd monitor and although im not sure if this is just my TV or not but my TV's resolution is actually slightly larger than 1080p so even when i switch a game over on windowed mode it doesn't fill up the whole TV.

anyways, since this is open and all it might be cool as an XBMC box if its only $99 which is about the same as a set top box assuming someone can get it up and running since im not a programmer. Aside from that i don't see the point.

the only name i can see getting away with for a boy would be "Red" from pokemon. Also its pretty interesting seeing people who I've never seen before in this thread, It's a nice time capsule. I must have been 12 when this thread was actually happening, i think i had just gotten an internet connection around that time.
