TalkBack / Re: This Week in Awful Downloads
« on: September 14, 2010, 12:52:23 AM »
Nintendo hates demos for one simple reason: they didn't come up with the concept first.  Name ANYTHING that someone else did first that Nintendo does well.
Backwards compatibility. Microsoft's sucked from the start on the 360, but they were there first, while Sony first gimped the PS3's then removed it entirely, but the Wii plays GameCube games perfectly (excepting those with special hardware - the modem, the LAN adaptor, and the GameBoy Player).

Backwards compatibility isn't so simple. Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance in 2001, which played pretty much all games in the Game Boy library. Prior to that, Sony's PS2, which was released in 2000, played all old PS1 games, right? And before that, Nintendo's Game Boy Color played all previous Game Boy games as well.

The PS3 still plays PS1 games.

Simply put, the lack of online play is disappointing. I was hyped for this game. EA made it sound like it was going to have everything and the kitchen sink.

It's just hard to believe that they couldn't find some online multiplayer solution for the $50 version of the game. Either way, I'll now probably wait for a price drop before I pick this up.

TalkBack / Re: No MegaMan Universe WiiWare Release Due to Size Restrictions
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:17:44 PM »
Nintendo's policy should have been changed long ago. Is there actually a viable reason for this size restriction? Either way, it's a big "Eff you" to Wii owners.

In any event, I would much rather see a VC release of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, but there's probably almost no chance of that ever happening.

TalkBack / Re: No Online Play for NBA Jam on Wii
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:27:00 PM »
At the moment, I'm not sure which version of the game I'll play.  If the version that comes with Elite lets me take my dream team of John Stockton and Karl Malone (with Deron Williams playing backup) against Jordan and Pippen (with Rodman playing backup), I'll go with that since it's free.  If only the Wii version lets me do that, I'll get that one.  I'm still somewhat indifferent about NBA Elite, so that's not a huge deciding factor.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no way that Jordan will be in this game. As far as I recall, Jordan has never been in a basketball video game that I have played (and no, Chaos in the Windy City does not count). Besides, the big deal about NBA 2K11 is that Jordan IS in that game, isn't it?

And yeah, perhaps it's false optimism on my part to expect that, but as I said to Pale, I cannot see a straight port flying in the marketplace. I mean, seriously, how would you sell that to people?

Hence all the added pack-ins.

That is indeed an interesting list. Thanks for compiling that, Mop it up.

There really isn't much left unreleased in the way of Nintendo games (at least as far as original NA releases go). I wouldn't mind seeing a few titles which they published, such as Illusion of Gaia and Mischief Makers (even though I have already tracked down carts of them).

Also, doesn't Gumshoe use the Zapper? Wouldn't it then fall in the Duckhunt category?

I'm pretty sure there is some legal issue baring Uniracers from coming to VC. It was something that caused trouble for the original game as well.

I never thought Uniracers could have a legal issue. It's such a simple game.

We once counted up Nintendo's published titles that they have yet to release, and I believe the number was around 50. When trimmed to games that are possible/worthwhile, the number was something around 20. That isn't very many left for a service which will be around for the foreseeable future.

Do you have a link to that list? I am curious about exactly which games are still left unreleased.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NWR's Influence
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:12:50 AM »
Not really. It was just published by Enix in Japan.

I know that it was developed by Treasure, I was just surprised to learn that it had any ties to Enix whatsoever, even as a publisher, when I booted it up and their logo appeared.

I am beginning to think that NWR plays a larger role in my purchases of old games. There are plenty of websites that cover new games, but few that talk about old games in a contemporary context. Discussions like these give the impression that a game has been able to stand the "test of time," so to speak.

Hahaha, well the bottom line is that I simply forgot that Icarian: Kindred Spirits' name had been changed to NyxQuest. And I knew it and Dive: The Medes Island Secret were somehow related, I just made the assumption that they were both developed by the same studio. Thanks for helping to clear all that up.

I'll also eventually purchase Bit.Trip Runner because of how much Jonny and Greg like it on RFN.

I am planning on doing the exact same thing, as soon as my new SD card arrives in the mail. Also, the discussion of obscure sidescrollers in a recent RFN also prompted me to purchase Demon's Crest for the SNES.

Nintendo Gaming / NWR's Influence
« on: August 17, 2010, 04:16:49 PM »
Hey everyone,

I've recently made a couple of game purchases which were heavily influenced by NWR staffers. Their spotlighting of these games caught my attention and whetted my appetite, and neither were formally reviewed. Particularly, Mischief Makers on N64, influenced by Zach's "Retro Revival" segment and Greg and co.'s discussion of it on recent RFNs) and Paladin's Quest for the SNES (featured on a recent episode of Radio Trivia, discussed by TYP and Jonny Metts). I have not been disappointed by either, and only Mischief Makers holds a little personal nostalgic value. (Also, it's a apparently an Enix game??)

So I am wondering, which of your game purchases has NWR played a role in, either recently or ones that are particularly memorable?

Nicalis is doing it. Remember how long Cave Story took?

It'll be worth it when we get it, but I'll just bide my time until it actually hits the Shop Channel.

Too true, Neal. I suppose I could pass the time by downloading Cosmonaut Games' Icarian: Kindred Spirits or Dive: The Medes Island Secret.

When the crew was talking about how abismal the N64 virtual console was, Johnny mnetioned the word "Rare" and I think that was a subtle hint that the N64 service will not be complete without Rare titles because those games defined the system besides those of Nintendo. But that ship has sailde over the horizon and will never return. :'(

Rare really was a huge part of the Nintendo 64. I was reminded of this the other day when I arranged all of my N64 games in alphabetical order and noticed that nine out of the first ten were developled by Rare. Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Blast Corps, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye 007, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct Gold...

I totally see this on Wiiware instead of retail release. I don't know actual numbers OneTwenty but didn't S&P bomb on the Wii? I never played the game but heard so much about it. I wish Nintendo would post this on virtual console...

I have no idea how well S&P sold. All I know is that a Mischief Makers sequel on the Wii is something I would love to see (WiiWare or retail).

And I totally agree, this game should be on the VC.

After Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, a Mischief Makers sequel is the perfect game for Treasure to make on the Wii. Wario Land: Shake It! was awesome -- the control was damn near perfect -- and I bet a Mischief Makers sequel would be just as enjoyable.

Why is it that there continues to be a flood of WiiWare games targeted more towards the casual Wii owner when most of the casual Wii owners probably aren't even connected to the internet? And of course, the one main outlet for dedicated gamer games, the Virtual Console, is neglected again this week.

Is anyone else worried that all the attention EA has been putting on the Wii version's single player modes might turn into "well, there is no online, but look at all this other content that you get"?

« on: August 02, 2010, 09:28:18 PM »
Hey James, I am assuming you never played EA's MVP Baseball '05 for Gamecube, Xbox, or PS2? This game is the complete baseball package. If you simply must have an up-to-date roster, then you might as well count this one out. If not, pick it up used for $5. It would take a long time to list all of the great features of this game, but here's a quick rundown of some of my favourites: Classic players and stadiums, design your own ballpark, excellent and helpful pitching and hitting mini-games, and the ability to charge the mound after being hit by a pitch. It also includes dynasty mode and AA and AAA teams. It sounds like a "jack of all trades, master of none", but it pulls everything off very well. I believe it was EA's last game in which they had access to the MLB Player's Association license before it went exclusive, and I still pull it out and play it often. IGN said that "you may be playing this game until EA gets its third party license back," and so far they have been correct.

Hey, instead of looking like a generic 1980s Arcade title, it looks like a Halo knock-off now.  Big improvement!   :P: :

Wow, Halo knock-off is right. I actually liked the colour tones of the first game's box art, but the actual picture here is much better.

Nice blog post, Zach. I feel for ya, man.

Play 'n' Trade just opened a brand new store about seven minutes from where I live, and I actually walked in there for the first time two days ago. I had no idea they were a chain. What really convinced me to check it out was the inclusion of "Retro Games" on their advertising. In this regard, I was somewhat impressed. They had some cool stuff, albeit not too much. I mostly peruse these game stores for older games, and tend to buy new games from Amazon or big box stores.

However, I have also been blessed with a nearby independent game store called Willow Video. They have tonnes of cheap used games and their new games are on par with the prices at big box stores. Whenever possible, I always try to give them my business first. It reminds me of two comic shops I once visited when I was young -- one a chain store, and the other independent. One was selling a reprint of the very first issue of TMNT for $25, and the other for $4. I bought my $4 issue of TMNT and still spent well over $25 on other amazing deals, all at the independent shop. That being said, if there are any idependent game stores in your area, definitely check them out.

However, I also like Neal's idea of gaming GameStop's system.
