Nintendo Gaming / Re: Virtual Console Frustration..
« on: February 01, 2011, 10:44:10 AM »
Unfortunately, I gave up on Square-Enix VC releases a while ago and instead tracked down original cartridges of most of their games I was interested in. I suppose that money could have gone to them and Nintendo instead, but oh well. I'd still buy Robotrek and Secret of Evermore, if they happen to be listening.

That being said, I am not one to rebuy games that I already own, but if I had access to all of them via VC, I would seriously consider putting them on there.

Glad to see that Shaymin mentioned DK '94. One game which I bought without knowing anything about it but played endlessly and enjoyed immensely was the first Game and Watch title for the Game Boy. Though only featuring 4 games -- Manhole, Fire, Octopus and Oil Panic -- the modern versions all play great, making this my favourite of the Game and Watch titles.

The Wario Land games are a must (perhaps we'll see Virtual Boy's entry someday?), as well as Kirby's Dream Land 2, which is one of the very best Kirby games.

I'd also love to see Mega Man 5, as I never did own it.

I wouldn't mind seeing an entry on Saturday that lists editor's top 5s or mentions other games that were not originally discussed.

Agreeing with happyastoria and jimwood. NWR is a breath of fresh air after wading through the unprofessionalism found at other sites.

Also, my favorite Transformers game is Blast Corps.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Are we ever getting Player's Choice games in NA?
« on: January 25, 2011, 02:27:39 AM »
Though who here doesn't have the big first party Wii titles?  We probably each have most of them.  So it's kind of funny to be hoping for a "Player's Choice" line when we probably already bought most of those games at full price.

This is my thought exactly. Because I already own all the big titles (and I find it hard to believe that most Wii owners don't as well), I would rather see Nintendo re-release and market a bunch of their other IPs. There have been many good Wii games that just haven't sold as well as they should have. As previously mentioned, I think Punch-Out!! is the perfect example of an excellent game that didn't quite garner the sales that it could have, and would probably see an increase in sales if dropped to $30. Some games which I think would be good candidates:

Punch-Out!!
Battalion Wars II
Wario Land: Shake It! (Out of print)
Mario Strikers Charged (Out of print?)
Super Paper Mario (A million seller, I believe)
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Endless Ocean 2
Excite Bots

While they are not "Player's Choice", there are Wii Nintendo games out there which are being sold at reduced prices. Sin and Punishment 2 and Metroid: Other M come to mind.

I'd like to put my GB/C games in cases too, but I'm not sure how I'd do that.

Ahh that's what I was wondering about the most. All the solutions I've seen require modifying the cases themselves (cutting the GBA holder).

I'm going to enjoy this series of blog posts, Zach. I am always interested in others' video game paraphernalia.

I am also beginning to think of "Shut up!" as your catch phrase.

Question: Have to put all of your handheld games into DS cases with covers? How many does that include, and are you happy with the result? I have all of my console games in cases with covers from The Cover Project, but couldn't bring myself to do the same with my handheld games.

Maybe Nintendo's absolute lack of software for Wii this year will be a motivating factor in sprucing up Virtual Console.

As a relatively new visitor to the site (being such a Nintendo fan, its one of my biggest regrets -- arriving so late, I mean) Lindemann has been the only site director I have known. I thought he did a great job. Well done, sir.

As for Neal and James, I am a fan of their work and look forward to what's next. Congrats!

I had to vote for Wario Land 3. It's a fantastic game that I could only devote a fraction of my attention to when I first purchased it, and retroactive would be a good excuse to fully explore it.

Am I the only one that want long podcasts?  They're great to listen to when I'm driving to work, or when I'm working out.  When I'm on the treadmill, I just plug my earphones in, load up a podcast, and before you know it, 40 minutes have passed.  Please have longer episodes! PLEASE!

I am all for longer podcasts too (I love it when they border on two hours) but with the switch to the weekly format, I am getting more new content and what essentially amounts to a two-hour podcast over two weeks rather than one week. However, I'll often listen to an episode two or three times (in the background while I do other stuff), so if a particular episode is lackluster one week, I won't have to wait another two weeks to get a different one.

I do know that if they released a few weekly episodes that were longer, I wouldn't complain.

Fatal Frame IV says "hello".

Not to mention Mother 3. Atlus publically said that they would be willing to localize the game and publish it, but Nintendo refused.

I can understand Fatal Frame due to the lukewarm reception that it seemed to get.

Atlus attempted to publish Mother 3 here? For reals? Wow, Nintendo, that's a dick move.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Retro games - just as fun as modern games

3D has so many variables that it is harder to not have some camera problem or something like that.

I have to touch upon this point of Ian's. I find retro games very enjoyable precisely because I don't have to worry about a 3D camera -- I can simply play the game without having to manage it.

I have to agree, that was a great little video that seemed to have captured the essence of the event. Nice job!

The Cave Story sound bite at the end was perfect.

I happened upon this in a board game store not too long ago, and I thought it looked pretty awesome. Although I would definitely put it in the "collect it" category, as I have never even played Yahtzee.

I wanted to share this with someone who would appreciate it's bizarreness, so I am sharing it with the Newscast and it's followers: On Tuesday, I actually laid my eyes on boxes of Ubisoft's BattleTag behind the glass underneathe he counter at a nearby Zellers department store. I guess I must be living in one of those test market areas (I live in BC, Canada). I had to laugh out loud because I couldn't believe that I was actually seeing that thing being sold in a store.

I suppose that's true. As long as it would be cheaper than it would be for a retail version, I'd be willing to download it. As far as development costs, couldn't they simply and cheaply cut it between worlds? Something like "Episode 1: World's 1-3", "Episode 2: World's 2-6", etc.?

Informative discussion on the process of releasing a WiiWare title. I am glad to hear that Nintendo seems to have good relationships with such developers.

I had actually written that e-mail before Super Meat Boy for WiiWare was officially cancelled. Now I am wondering, "Is there any reason why Team Meat couldn't turn the game into an episodic release, breaking it up into two or three games that all fall well under the 40 MB limit?"

The return of Pedro!

One thing I really enjoyed about Buster Busts Loose! is it's gameplay variety, particularly in the levels. Pedro briefly described the level that is collapsing so you have to continually dash to avoid your demise. The football level was also always a highlight for me (though it took me a while to figure out how to play). There are many different and surprisingly fun minigames that you could play between the stages, too. The dash mechanic was very well implemented and utilized in this game.

I keep clicking on it thinking maybe there's some new information, only to find people discussing things that should be in the General Gaming forum.

Unfortunately, for that to become a reality, Nintendo would have to, you know, actually release some new information about the game, which rarely happens outside of a major press event.

That being said, I think it would be conveinient if you could mark a post as off-topic and then be able to only view on-topic posts in a particular thread.

The Unwound Future was great, but I was done with it long before I was done with Picross 3D. As a matter of fact, despite having solved all the puzzles on the card, I'm still not done with it.

I rented the original Boom Blox, but held out to purchase the sequel because of the promise of downloadable levels. However, whereas I invited friends over to play the multiplayer on the original, I have only played the single player/co-op on the sequel. That being said, I enjoyed the hell out of the single player/co-op aspect of Bash Party, and completely believe that every Wii owner should also own this game.

There seem to be two major points of contention here: That they originally announced/developed/hyped this game as a WiiWare game, and that Nintendo has a size limit of 40MB for games developed for WiiWare. If either of these conditions were removed, this thread wouldn't have garned the response that it has. However, removing one of them would make Wii owners much happier than removing the other (and this could be a happiness beyond Super Meat Boy).
