Podcast Discussion / Re: News Digest - May 4
« on: May 04, 2012, 05:24:56 PM »
Hey guys. I wanted to let you know that I definitely support the idea of having some mid-week news podcasts here at NWR, but please don't feel obligated to keep the podcast only 15 minutes long. Essentially, news is great, but the discussion of the news is what I am more interested in. So unless the time constraint is a result of the host' schedule, please feel free to go well beyond 15 minutes. Perhaps you can lead off by listing the top stories so that people know what they are, and then move into discussing them. Anywho, keep up the great work!

Well son of a bitch. I had been looking forward to this one for quite some time.
Here's hoping that it turns out to be downloable on the Wii U.

Another great show. And yes, I am obviously still listening, and will continue to do so until you're no longer doing the show!

A couple of episodes back when you featured Illusion of Gaia I had speculated that you had used it before on a very early episode. Back then, when I searched your database I could have sworn I had come across it. More than that, I was almost positive that I had heard it on said earlier episode. Apparently, I was mistaken.

Hey all, quick update regarding my order from Nintendo.com. I just received a shipping confirmation e-mail. As Lithium had thought, I assume the holiday weekend interfered a little bit. Seems that everything is moving along smoothly now though.

205
Did everyone get shipping confirmations from Nintendo prior to receiving the game? I'm in Canada and haven't received any indication that my copy is on the way. No shipping confimation, no charge to my credit card -- nothing. I preordered the game almost the day the website went up. Unfortunately, I can't find any receipts in my e-mail, either, which is making me start to wonder if they even got my order in the first place.

I just took a customer satisfaction survey on Club Nintendo that was set to expire on March 31st. It was in my "To Dos". I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I thought I would throw it out there.

I think if Nintendo wasn't involved, both MS and Sony wouldn't mind waiting until 2014-2015 before launching their next systems.

I tend to agree. We might've even possibly seen the 10 year console life cycle come to fruition. Maybe.

According to this awful website, Microsoft has issued a statement saying that the next XBOX will definitely NOT be at this year's E3, nor will it be out in 2012. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/122/1220897p1.html

Sounds like great news for the Wii U.

209
Assassin's Creed Collection Wii U? I'd buy that.

Not sure you clarify this as a "sequel" per se (more like a threequel), but I would love to see an new Battalion Wars game on the Wii U.

Adrock, remove thy face from thy palm, lest it become permanently affixed to it.

Also, Kairon and all others concerned: I also do not consider handhelds, such as the DS, when claiming to be a single console owner. I differentiate between the two, and I see nothing wrong with doing so. PSP and Vita aside, handhelds and consoles have traditionally tended to offer different experiences (though the 3DS may be flirting with line itself just a little bit).

Acknowledging the potential for disappointment is, in fact, managing your expectations.

Touché, Pedo bear. Just as long as people don't try to tell me to NOT be excited, because that ain't going to happen!

A wise man on these boards once said, "Manage your expectations." /Uncle Bob

I will be doing no such thing. It's been ages since I was this hyped for a Nintendo console launch (since the N64), so I've decided to just let it wash over me. Being a single console (Wii) owner, I am confident that there are few ways in which the Wii U will disappoint me, according to my expectations.

Did you snag one, UncleBob? I might have picked one up myself, but they are sold out.

I notice some jackass bought 20 of them.

I'm personally hoping for a snap in shell you can put the Wii U in to.

This shell would have a high speed connection to the Wii U and all for you to put in a regular hard drive into it...

But will it have a second circle pad?

So in a flurry of eagerness and excitement, I snapped up a download copy of Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again for 150 Coins when it was available on the Club Nintendo Website. However, because of said eagerness/excitement, I didn't bother to read the disclaimer that you could only redeem the code on a 3DS and NOT on the DSi. So I am left with a download code for Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again that is completely useless to me. I was wondering if anyone is interested in possibly doing a trade, say for a download code for Mario Party 2?

EDIT: Woo, someone kindly took me up on my offer!

« on: January 31, 2012, 12:26:09 PM »
Great episode, guys. I have recently been working through my back catalogue, completing some of the games that I never owned/played as a child. I started building upon my original childhood collection of Nintendo games within the last 2-3 years, and as a result of hoarding, I have a touch of the Lindemann Syndrome. However, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Super Adventure Island, and Faxanadu have all been recent conquests of mine. I also recently beat Ducktales 2 for the NES, a game which my amazing fiance surprised me with as a Christmas gift this past year!

The biggest glaring omission in my gaming history would be the Final Fantasy series, I-VI. I have the means to play them all, but unfortunately I have yet to get around to doing so.

First of all, full disclosure: I really do not like the name Wii U. However, I'm open to Nintendo keeping the "Wii" name if they feel that it'll still attract the casual audience. However, I believe Nintendo has said that they hope to capture both the casual and core audiences with the Wii U. Unfortunately, herein lies the problem that I see with the name "Wii U". It seems the "Wii" name has lost it's "cred" with many core gamers, so they run the risk of continuing to alienate those who wouldn't give a system with a name like "Wii U" a second thought. On the flip side, Nintendo made so much money in the casual market with the Wii that they hope that it's brand recognition will continue to resonate with that crowd. The downside there is that, and correct me if I'm wrong, but many of those new casuals who purchased a Wii did not continue to purchase much software throughout the rest of it's tenure, which really makes me wonder how much of that demographic will bother to embrace the "Wii U", especially if the name does little to differentiate it from the Wii.

Nintendo is in a tough spot with trying to please both crowds. They're best bet might be to try and find a name that had the same impact of "Wii" -- ambiguous yet recognizable -- that won't scare away the casual crowd nor deter the core. Perhaps it will be new and exciting for the casuals, yet maybe with the hint of edge that long lost core gamers crave. Personally, I would just be happy for it to change from "Wii U".

So what is everyone's general hype-level for the Wii U at this point? I'm curious because the Wii U happens to be the first Nintendo system in quite some time that I am not only really anticipating, but thinking about purchasing on launch day (despite the fact that it could possibly get a price drop within the first couple of years). Everything that I've heard so far -- both facts and rumours -- has me extremely interested. Everything but the name, which I think is completely stupid.

Unintelligible names aside, it seems as though Nintendo is going to deliver much of what I am hoping for in the Wii's successor. As a single console owner -- the Wii -- it's not too difficult to get excited about the changes being implemented, even those that are only rumours at this point. However, one of the features I am most looking forward to is the system's ability to stream games to the tablet. I've passed on the 3DS simply because as I grow older I simply can't afford to be buying games for two systems which will undoubtedly have great lineups (the 3DS already proving this to be the case). And as I do most of my handheld gaming at home, it'll be a great solution, especially when my fiancé wishes to watch the TV.

Bottom line, I'm really looking forward to this year's E3. I can't wait to see how many of the rumours pan out, and what other surprises Nintendo has up their sleeves (and they always have some). As someone who really enjoys the Wii (in spite of its many shortcomings), I'm safely betting on Nintendo doing even better, and that alone is enough to get me excited -- though there are clearly many other things that do so, as well. Consider my level of anticipation a 9/10.

Hate to break it to you, TYP, but I am 100% certain that you have used game two on Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition before. It was in the very early days, if not the first episode. I know this because I've always wanted to hear the game discussed further, but I believed that there was no chance of that happening. What a nice surprise!

Just checked the list, and game 2 was brand new.

Don't trust the list. It's been used, and I know it. I will check the earlier episodes.

I finished the episode on my way home from work, and I must say that you really redeemed the show from the mediocrity of the first game. Very well done, sirs.

Edit: Well, my initial search has so far resulted in nothing. However, I have a very hard time believing that this game has not been used. I know I've searched for it in the records before, seen that it's been used, and therefore did not request it. I'm also sure that I've heard it on an earlier episode. Perhaps it was on a TYP Short? The search continues...

That being said, I've been meaning to ask if you've ever thought of reusing older games. Perhaps feature one throwback game per episode, choose different songs, and invite a different guest host to discuss it. Maybe 100 episodes in is too early to implement this, but perhaps not?

Edited!

That thought has crossed my mind too, Chozo. I've never owned an HD system before, so there are plenty of games that I haven't played. What I really hope to see are several collections for the Wii U. Perhaps Wii U will get the Metal Gear Solid HD collection, or maybe even Batman: Arkham City will also include Arkham Asylum? It's a long shot, sure, but it's not an impossibility.

I was excited by the idea of a Super Monkey Ball game controlled with the balance board, but SEGA seemed to have squandered that opportunity since Step and Roll launched to such lacklustre reviews.

First of all, on the subject of Ball:

Halbred, I echo what Mop it up and UncleBob say. If you're investing in Ball as a game to play on the go, I probably wouldn't bother. However, if you would like it as a collectible, then I'd say it's worth picking up (although I still feel that 1200 coins is a little steep). It is definitely a cool recreation of an integral piece of Nintendo history, which is essentially why I ordered it. You will find it to be cooler than the Handheld History cards.

On the subject of Mario Kart: Super Circuit:

I played through MK:SC back when it was first released on the GBA, and at the time, I quite enjoyed it, but it was definitely different from it's predecessors in both controls and course design. I've heard people say that the controls are looser than Super Mario Kart's, and that I will certainly agree with. However, this creates the learning curve that ejamer mentioned. I believe that MK:SC has the biggest learning curve of any Mario Kart game, and many will likely write-off the game too early because of it. Mario Kart is supposed to be quite accessible, after all. On top of the loose steering, you have several courses which require you to make hairpin turns, and arrows flash on the screen to warn you when approaching them. These turns, coupled with the loose controls, require you to memorize the tracks in order to effectively negotiate these turns. It's also therefore likely that you have to memorize the tracks to a degree which you may not have to in other Mario Kart games. I still got plenty of enjoyment out of the game, though.

Interesting, but a little too unnecessarily complex. I always enjoyed the split timeline theory in which the two strands reconvene with the Oracle games.
