Nintendo Gaming / Re: Day 1 Launch Games!
« on: October 02, 2012, 10:26:26 AM »
You don't get a 10% discount, you get a 10% rebate and can only redeem the points when you get to 500 points (i.e. once u have bought $50 worth of digital games).

Same difference. I get 10% back towards a future purchase, and considering that lots of games will be made available digitally, I might opt to not get a physical copy in order to "save" 10% (I'm also sure there will be plenty of DLC for games such as NSMBU and WiiFit U that I will feel obligated to buy)

But I didn't realize that you had to save up 500 points to redeem....

I find this whole 10%-back strategy very interesting. If what you get back in points is based on how much you spend, then buying a game at full price rather than waiting for it to go on sale (assuming Nintendo discounts games on the Wii U's eShop) might be worth it to some. Essentially, it seems like it's a means with which Nintendo can combat the devaluation of downloadable games.

You're mistaken. :D

"Ships from and sold by Just 4 Games."

Oh fudge, you are correct. I could have sworn that when I posted that, it didn't say that. I was certain to look there before I linked it... Well at any rate, you've certainly prevented me from waiting for Amazon to offer pre-orders.

EDIT: Ahh, apparently it takes a moment to load that information.

As suspected, I received an e-mail from the second website on which I tried to submit a pre-order, telling me that there was a problem with my order and to call them. To hell with that. How about you don't be lazy and remove the option to pre-order the damn thing from your website?

Just put in a pre-order at EB Games. We'll see if that's fruitful.

179
Really? They seem to sell the Nintendo 3DS... Perhaps it's a console thing?

180
Yeah, I put an online preorder in on Best Buy's website yesterday, and today I received a message that there was a problem with my order -- something about the billing information that I entered not matching what my bank has on file or some bullshit like that. So I just went ahead and cancelled that order. I've since put a preorder in on Future Shop's website, and am waiting to see if there will be complications with that one as well.

What I really want to know is when the bloody effing hell is Amazon going to put the Wii U itself up for preorder?

As much as I enjoy hearing Zach's perspective on things (even though he continues to go to the "Metroid: Other M was a bad game" well far too often when I am convinced he very much enjoyed it), my attitude is more in line with Carmine's on this one.

To be honest, very little surprised me about this event. I would love it if the system were cheaper (hell, while I'm at it, I'd love it if EVERYTHING was cheaper), but there's enough there for me to feel justified spending the $350 for the premium model. I like the incentive of their download program, and today, for the first time, they really got me interested in Nintendoland, which I'll be getting packed-in with my system.

Oddly enough, many things that a gamer like Zach may see as a shortcoming, I don't. Only two confirmed launch day games? That's actually OK by me, as I don't spend as much time gaming as I used to and I am hoping to completely finish one game before moving on to the next. If it's a selection issue (read: where is ZombiU), well you'll just have to wait, much like with any other game. Does anyone remember the launch of the N64? There were only two game released at launch for that system, but I played Super Mario 64 for months. I wish I were that easy to satisfy these days.

I'm also quite excited about the e-shop, which will likely have some great games at launch as well. As far as the VC, I find it hard to believe that Virtual Console games will remain forever unplayable on the game pad. This being Nintendo, I can't rule that out, but that has to be an easy fix should they decide to implement that in the future.

Anywho, at the risk of sounding like a Nintendo apologist, I can understand Zach's disappointment, but he should bear in mind that the price of the system will eventually drop, more games will be released, and more features will be revealed, so from this point on, for someone with his perspective on the Wii U, things will only get better.

I never paid much attention to this game, but I found the Metroid demo that they showed today to be pretty cool. I am absolutely buying the deluxe set, and even though I was a little bummed at first that the game was included (in lieu of, say, New Super Mario Bros. U), I quite looking forward to checking it out.

FREAKIN'. AWESOME.

This is awesome news. I really wanted to play this game but don't plan on buying a 3DS anytime soon. Now I can download it on my Wii U!

As much as I want to be excited for this system, I just can't bring myself to do it. For the first time ever they are launching a system where I do not care in the slightest about any of the Nintendo games that will be on it. It is a weird feeling.

It's a curious thing indeed, as it seems that for some reason, I am more excited for the Wii U than I have been for any other Nintendo console since the N64, and we're both going on the same information. However, if you were to ask my why, I don't know that I could provide you with a solid reason for my anticipation.

Sure, I can say that I'm excited about a couple of games like Pikmin 3 and New Super Mario Bros. U (the first NSMB game that I'm actually really looking forward to), as well as offerings on the e-shop and of course the prospect of finally seeing many beloved Nintendo games displayed in HD,  but barring that, there's little else I can say.

I think that Nintendo's lack of information sharing has something to do with that position, but there's still enough there for me to somehow get excited about what I've seen. I'm sure I'm a little hyped on the Wii U's potential, which admittedly is not the best thing for one to be hyped on, but I'm OK with it.

Does it not tell you that it's sold out until you try to order it? It still seems as though they are offering the reward.

I would absolutely order this if I had enough coins. I could probably only eke out 200 or so looking at my pile of unregistered games.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: I just deleted my 20+hr Xenoblade Save...
« on: August 29, 2012, 12:03:41 PM »
This is exactly why you guys need to back up your saves.

This is a good idea. I'm about 120 hours into Xenoblade and I think I'm closing in on the final moments of the game.

Unfortunately, the one save that I am most concerned about -- my SSBB save -- is locked to the system for some moronic reason. I don't mind Nintendo's decision to make the file incapable of playing on other Wii systems, but that should not come at the expense of being able to back up my file.

This sucks! I recently recently renewed my subscription. Prior to doing so, I hadn't received any renewal reminders... I wonder if this is why.

I've actually kept my subscription going since issue #48. It was the May 1993 issue, and it featured Batman Returns.

Ever since their overhaul in July 2005, I have read each issue from front to back days after it arrived. I always enjoyed doing that. Whereas now you can get all of your information from the internet, it was a very comforting thing to kick back with the magazine and read about all of the upcoming games.

Plus, in recent years they have put a lot of focus on retro games, which I found even more endearing.

193
Nice! I recently picked this game up and played through it, and it was quite enjoyable. I just hope that it doesn't get too overshadowed by Wario Land. Though I prefer Wario Land, both games are great.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Which was better: GameCube or Wii?
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:42:34 PM »
If I were to weigh in on this topic, I would probably start by comparing similar games across the two systems, starting with Nintendo's own franchises. Super Mario Sunshine vs. Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario Galaxy 2? I prefer the latter. Wario World vs. Wario Land: Shake It!? Admittedly, two very different types of games, but I prefer Shake It!, hands down. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker vs. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword? In this case, I can exclude Twilight Princess, as it was released on both systems...

195
How old were you when you played the game?

I was under the impression that age was irrelevant to this argument, as you have expressed the interest not to be judged based on yours.

196
Not talking about that either. The gameplay is boring, the multiplayer levels were bland, and even for the time, the framerate was ****.

Well, I have to disagree with this statement. I spent hours upon hours playing the game in both the single and multiplayer modes, and I wouldn't have done so if it weren't fun, interesting, and engaging. Goldeneye was not a simple run and gun shooter like many FPSes today. The ability to sneak up on enemies and strategically eliminate them added a ton of depth to the game, and I wish more FPSes would utilize the same mechanic today. As for the multiplayer levels, there were one or two that were bland, sure, but the majority of them kept me and my friends playing this game until only a couple years ago.

It certainly could have used a better frame rate, but other than that, I have to think it is one of the most polished games on the N64. They went the extra mile in many areas including multiple enemy reactions to where they were hit (something I am not sure all FPSes even do today), as well as including excellent soundtracks and level designs that really use the 007 license to its full extent.

I'd say it makes a lot more sense than their previous excuses for New Super Mario Bros. Wii not being online.

198
I would probably buy both Diablo III and Starcraft 2 if they came to the Wii U. It's been several years since I have stopped playing games on my PC, and I think they would work fairly well on the Wii U.

Louieturkey, keep in mind that Warcraft 2 and Diablo were both released on the PS1, and Starfraft was released on the N64. Sure, these probably weren't the ideal platforms for these games, but Wii U is a much better fit for their sequels. The Wii U Game Pad may not have multi-touch, but neither does a mouse connected to a PC.

I agree, those backgrounds look terrific. A more Super Mario World-esque map would go a long way, too, but I am not yet entirely convinced that that is what I am seeing here. Either way, I am far more interested in this game now than I was last year. Can't wait to see what else is revealed on Tuesday.
