Thanks for the tips. I'll say that a lot of that information is definitely not apparent in the game, and I've played it for a few hours now.

Yeah, it took me a little while to learn all that myself, and I'm sure there's more I have yet to glean. To be honest, I'm not all that surprised since, as you mentioned, the game has no tutorial and drops you right into the world.

I thought I would help to clarify a few things about Need for Speed: Most Wanted U. Some of this information can be picked up from the tickers on the loading screens, or from the in-game manual.

1. Cops don't randomly pursue you. If you speed past them, hit them, etc. then they will give chase. If you drive by them slowly you will likely be just fine.

2. There is a consequence to getting "Busted" by the cops. Each pursuit is sort of treated as it's own event, for which you can earn additional SP (Speed Points, which help to unlock "Most Wanted" races. See number 4.) The longer the pursuit, the more SP you can earn. However, if you are "Busted", you lose all of the SP you had accumulated.

Also, if you are tired of the cops pursuing you, you can always use the control pad to access the easy drive menu and jump into a race, avoiding the pursuit.

3. I found the turning issue is easily solved by drifting -- tapping the brake while in a turn to begin sliding. From there, it takes a little practice to finesse it.

4. It is possible to win races with every different car (yes, even the Ford Raptor). Every car has its own set of 5 or so race events. These can be found by accessing the Easy Drive menu. By using different cars to complete their individual events, you will unlock upgrades for that vehicle.

The only races in which you choose which car to drive are the "Most Wanted" races. These races are unlocked as you gain more SP, and feature the faster cars in the game. It may not be possible to win these races using every car (certainly not without upgrading), but yes, you will likely want to unlock faster cars before attempting some of these.

And yes, somewhere someone at Criterion is laughing their ass off because of his decision to put some of these cars in this game (I'm looking at you, Ford Raptor).

There are two consoles launching later this year. So unfortunately, I don't think Nintendo have a lot of time to work with here. I think we're rapidly reaching an inflection point where those people who have not yet bought a Wii U, but were open to the prospect of buying one, are now beginning to look at what Nintendo's system offers in comparison to it's soon to be competitors. Honestly? It's not a flattering comparison.

Until they find out the next Xbox won't play used games and the PS4 is over $500.  Then suddenly the Wii U looks a whole lot better.

I agree, Luigi dude. So many people seem to be putting all of this faith into these future unreleased systems from Sony and Microsoft, when there is no telling how they will actually function or be priced. Neither Sony or Microsoft have spotless records, and it seems to me that people seem to forget that when discussing Nintendo's mistakes (and vice versa).

Personally, I won't have any problem waiting for new forthcoming games because there are many titles being released on the Wii U that I haven't played before. I'm currently playing through NFS: MWU, then I'm moving onto Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders II, and then Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I'm also someone who will play through a game until completion (usually 20 - 40 hours), so I don't find myself buying a new game every week. I hope that those who say they don't have enough games to play on the Wii U are at least giving different kinds of games a chance. However, if they are only waiting for Nintendo-developed games to play, then they shouldn't be surprised since Nintendo usually only releases one or two games per quarter on a given system anyway, no?

This game is sounding better and better. I'm even more tempted to pick this up at $50. I'll tell you what, Square-Enix: Ideally, I would love to pay $30 for this, so why don't we split the difference and call it $40?

131
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what becomes of Nintendo's relationship with Platinum Games. The Wonderful 101 is looking, well, wonderful!

TalkBack / Re: Embracing the Digital Future on the 3DS
« on: April 01, 2013, 06:04:44 PM »
Unlike many others out there, I'm not opposed to buying digital copies of games because their may be issues with the DRM, or because I can't trade it in when finished. The main reason I don't buy digital copies of games is because as much as I love playing them, I love collecting them. I love removing the plastic wrap. I love flipping through the instruction manual. I love the way all of the games look lined up on my shelf. I just love the tangability of a physical copy.

I've only traded in a handful of games in my lifetime (never out of necessity), but for the most part I keep my games. More recently, games have been moving in a more digital direction (digital manuals is actually one thing that I applaud because it makes sense), but I will still buy a physical copy if that is an option. If a game is only released digitally, I'll have no problem buying it that way.

Wow, this game is pretty sweet.

I barely know what I'm doing half of the time and my driving is terrible, but exploring the city, finding jackspots and crashing through billboards is all kinds of stupid fun!

Great blog, Greg! Glad to see that you continue to stay true to your roots (even if developers do not).

Woo hoo! My copy from Origin is on the truck and out for delivery! Should be arriving some time this afternoon! See you mofos online soon!

Alright Gustavsson, you just made "the list".

137
Just got my copy, updating as I post. It was a mission trying to get this game, I went to three Gamestop's before I found a copy, and all of the stores I went into was the same story, they only received one copy of the game due to low demand. I don't know if that's true, but that is what the people working at the store told me.

So what you're saying is that it's selling out almost everywhere? ;)

[/size]This. 1000 times this. While I enjoyed the campaign and it's story (but loathe not being able to go back and play its levels individually to scan hand prints), nothing beats levelling up your character and then mowing down enemies that previously made your life a living hell.

Nintendo Gaming / EA's CEO Jon Riccitiello Stepping Down
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:56:03 PM »
From IGN:

Electronic Arts' John Riccitiello is stepping down as chief executive officer. He submitted his resignation to EA's board of directors today. Effective March 30, former EA president and CEO Larry Probst will step in as executive chairman while the company searches for a replacement.
"We appreciate John's leadership and the many important strategic initiatives he has driven for the Company," Probst said. "We have mutually agreed that this is the right time for a leadership transition."
Riccitiello addressed his departure directly in a blog. "My decision to leave EA is really all about my accountability for the shortcomings in our financial results this year," he said. "It currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued to the Street, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. And for that, I am 100 percent accountable."
EA's earnings have been on the decline, and the company recently faced numerous layoffs as well.
In a press release statement, Riccitiello said, ""EA is an outstanding company with creative and talented employees, and it has been an honor to serve as the Company's CEO. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth. I remain very optimistic about EA's future — there is a world class team driving the Company's transition to the next generation of game consoles."

How might this affect EA's current "relationship" with Nintendo?

145
Great question, insanolord. It warrants a moment's consideration. Though it may not be my one pick, I would definitely second NHL 14. I'm not a multi-console owner, and it's been far too long since an incredible NHL game appeared on a Nintendo console.

Would you say that they... wait for it... JUMPED SHIP?

Can't say that I've run into any glitches yet. What I really want is the ability to play using my Pro Controller.

148
Any word on whether this will have Burnout-like modes? If so, definitely count me in. If not, I'll still be sure to give it a try.

BTTF3 kicks ass. It's not better than the first one, but it's definitely better than the second.

I'm inclined to agree, but boy do I love the first one.

TalkBack / Re: Roundtable Discussion: PlayStation 4 Unveiling

"But I think that the huge increase in fast RAM is going to open up game *design* in a way that has never really been possible. I am looking forward to full-scale battles with hundreds of enemies acting independently on a richly detailed battlefield."

This sounds like it could be quite troubling. Wouldn't designing such games cost a lot more money? Is this going to contribute to inflating the price of game development? If so, is that still considered being developer friendly?
