Nintendo Gaming / Re: Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
« on: November 23, 2009, 02:31:17 AM »
Got this two days ago, and me and my sister plowed through it this evening. I wish it was a little longer. It seems easier than the first on multiplayer, harder than the first on single.

Headshots are much easier to pull off. Me and my sister have gotten an S ranking on every mission for headshots so far, and the bonus multiplier make it crucial to nail them in a row to get S scores in other areas now too.

Overall? I'm happy with the game, although I wish it was a little longer. If you didn't like the first, you won't like this one. But I loved the first, so no problems there and I enjoy the improvements this one brings (although the first secret missions are lame, since they are the exact same levels found in game just with added voice over...)

I said 97; however, if we are counting lurkers who simply posted 100 posts over the years and not ones who are actively posting nowadays... it could be far greater, especially since I would wager things like the Wii Sales thread is pretty ripe for lurker watching.

I also wonder if parents became more likely to name their children "Mario" or even "Luigi" as a result of the franchise... I'm pretty sure that in the English speaking world these names would probably be largely unknown otherwise.

There were several Marios at my school, and I doubt the parents would have been influenced by Donkey Kong (which was the only Mario game out, or Mario Bros in the case of some of the younger ones I suppose). Not discounting what you are saying, but Mario was not all that unheard of in my experience as a name. I have never seen someone with the name Luigi, though.

Could be Legend of Barry or Krauser May Kry.  Just something badass.

A game featuring Krauser would be excellent, as long as the same dynamics from RE4 apply (the cool bow and his transforming hand). Wouldn't be much of a horror game with those powers, but would serve the action shift of the franchise well.

So who plans on getting this? It is out the 17th.

Count me in, it will likely be the first Wii game I get this year.

I think there is a lot of danger here, and I speak from someone who recently traded in carrying their DS everywhere... to just carrying around their cell. Our culture is one of convenience and simplicity, and could see the DS being hurt from that angle.

I'm not too worried about Nintendo here and the handheld market in the grander scheme of things. Their strength lies in their franchises, and as long as Pokémon and other things that remain top sellers they have something to fall back on. They will take a hit from the loss of the casual buyers, but still have a fanbase to support them. Sony is in greater danger here, especially if third parties start flocking to phones with gaming in mind and Sony doesn't counter with adding a plan similar in their next PSP. It will be interesting to see what Sony does from here: fight Nintendo or fight Apple.

Code Veronica was a spin-off? I thought it was considered a sequel at the time.

Like I said, spin off in name only since it lost the numbering system that RE4 picked up again.

EDIT: Maybe I should have just said "non-numbered sequel"? Would have been less confusing I admit, but I love my verbose habit...

I still think Capcom is gonna make a sound business(and undo a wrong) decision and make a Wii version of RE5 with all the DLC content already on the disc.

Be nice, and very sound from a business perspective as you say, although I'm not holding my breath. I think it's more likely we get a "Code Veronica" type of spin off, a spin off in name only but lacks the normal number rather than 5 itself. Hopefully Capcom proves me wrong.

Anyway, just wanted to throw my hat into the arena, as it was mentioned earlier, and say that I got Umbrella Chronicles... for Umbrella Chronicles. Not as part of a test or anything. I don't understand all the spoken disinterest it seems to get either. It's not an amazing title, a little short, but it's solid and catered to exactly what I wanted:
1. An on-rail shooter when I had none at this point
2. Utilizing an established franchise that I cared about
3. Co-op

The last of which is more important than anything else, and why I will be getting the sequel as we had a blast with it.

I think a big problem with Dead Space Extraction, and there are many as mentioned in this thread, is that it's late to the party. UC was a hit on the Wii, although doesn't seem to be a beloved title. Those that didn't care for it likely passed up DSE, while those who loved the game, like me, are probably holding out for the next RE on-rail shooter instead, which is just around the corner now.

Nintendo is in no danger of being driven out of the console wars or even becoming unprofitable, but there is a very real danger they will lose their current 1st place status and if they don't start getting serious that is something that will happen sooner or later. I don't want it to happen, but I can see how it could.

I disagree. I can't see how it could in the realm of reason, unless we are expecting this generation to go on for more than the normal cycle. Sony simply doesn't have the time frame to do something feasible like this.

There are dangers here for Nintendo, but losing first place isn't one of them.

The harm comes, as previously mentioned, from this giving third parties more excuses to not support Nintendo platforms. Furthermore, it also hurts Nintendo for their respective "Wii2 vs. PS4" battle. Going from history, the largest shift of developer support happened from the transition of the PS1 to PS2 in between generations and one would assume Nintendo's successor to the Wii could boast a similar benefit depending on how the end of the generation plays out.

I'm actually not sure if that's really a Nintendo 64 game because it looks a bit better than what the N64 could muster. But then again, it was a late release so perhaps they figured out how to optimize performance.

Agree. Going from the article, IGN wasn't sure what system it was for and just assumed it was the N64 as they "ruled out the possibility that we're looking at a Dolphin game, because we assume the next generation machine will be able to crank out better graphics than this."

However, it looks better than what the N64 was capable of, and therefore I think it was a Gamecube title. One that just, graphically, wasn't very impressive and I wouldn't be surprised if that fact was partly why the project was shelved to begin with.

PS3 won't catch up with the Wii. Ever really.

I would think the bigger concern would be that the current trend of PS3 outselling the Wii would be troubling from a developer standpoint, as the last thing Nintendo needs is another excuse for developers to use to support another console.

weird. I pretty much said the same thing in the sales thread
NSMB Wii will hopefully rectify the situation, but if this keeps up Sony has a small victory on their hand with a YTD win.
That is all the excuse the Japanese 3rd party developers need to justify their shunning of the Wii.
Nintendooooooooooooooomed!!!

Great minds think alike? Either that or I read it earlier and it entered my subconscious... both perfectly logical considering I read the Sales Thread religiously.

More emphasis on story and open-world environments is the exact opposite of what Star Fox should be.

Fully agree.

I had already made peace with the fact that Star Fox was dead and Sin & Punishment 2 was the closest we were going to get on the Wii. Damn you, Miyamoto; damn you for giving me hope.

Ohhhh yeah... forgot all about Sin & Punishment 2, which by coincidence was released in Japan today.

Darkwing Duck, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales before Gargoyles!

I've actually rewatched all 4 of those in recent years and as much as I love Chip & Dale, Rescue Rangers is not the great show I remembered it as.  Duck Tales is still awesome, though, and Darkwing Duck is charming if not as funny as I remembered.

We seriously need a "Disney Afternoon" Land in this game with all these old shows, though.

EDIT: Oh, and don't forget Gummi Bears!

Cosigned, everything. Duck Tales holds up the best of the shows from that era.

New DDR games released yesterday say 'hi'. They still sell well enough. The Wii ones seem to be doing well.

DDR did shrink in popularity, but it has stabilized and is a sustainable genre. They seem able to release at least one version a year for each system and also make special editions like the Disney one.

So I suspect that the instrument rhythm games will shrink but stabilize as well. In the end I expect the Bock Band platform to survive and Activision will definitely slow down it's release of Guitar/Band Hero games. Both series can survive in a compressed music game market.

Yeah but the DDR games are a one company show... the franchise has no serious competition. The same could not be said of Guitar Hero/Rock Band. To get to that more normalized "one release a year, plus special edition" type of schedule, one of those franchises will have to go away.

The market won't dissipate, the genre has wider appeal than Tony Hawk did, but clearly it has already hit its peak and is diminishing in sales. If Viacom hasn't made money during the height of the genre, I am somehow skeptical that they will turn their fortunes around when the genre is on a downward slide.

On a random note, why was Pro brought up in the D_Average/Deg thing? (Pro for life/president/ruler of the universe!)

I actually kind of wish I'd kept my old Nintendo VHS tapes.  I had the Mario 64; Star Fox 64; and Donkey Kong 64/Jet Force Gemini tapes, and they were always good for a laugh.

Youtube to the rescue... Star Fox 64 one is probably the most cheesiest (and the most fanboyish):

So it looks like LucasArts owned the copyright to the game while Konami owned the trademark to the actual name of the game.

Yep, so I guess LucasArts couldn't use the name itself before 2002 then, as you mused. Wonder why Konami decided to end their trademark on it.

But from 1993 until 2002, Konami owned the trademark (check the USPTO). Seems like it would be odd for LucasArts to own the copyright and Konami to own the trademark. Maybe that's why the sequel was named Ghoul Patrol, since LucasArts legally couldn't use the ZAMN name.

I checked the Library of Congress, and they cite LucasArts as the claimant:

"Type of Work:    Computer File
Registration Number / Date:    TX0003776880 / 1994-02-17
Title:    Zombies ate my neighbors.
Description:    Machine readable work.
Copyright Claimant:    LucasArts Entertainment Company
Date of Creation:    1993
Date of Publication:    1993-10-15 "

ZAMN was published by Lucasarts? I was under the impression that Konami did that game...

Correct. Konami published the original ones on the Genesis and SNES. The series was developed by Lucasarts, though, and the opening credits cite "Zombies Ate My Neighbors TM and © 1993 Lucasarts Entertainment Company". So it seems they always owned the rights, and are the sole owners today going by the credit for these releases. Be interesting I guess to see if the Konami logo is still on there (probably is if I had to guess).

Mario Party 831 Hrs. 55 Min.12 Times
It's nice to see somebody else has Mario Party 8 on their list.

Yeah, I'm surprised more people don't have it on theirs. It's a very fun multiplayer game. Although I haven't gotten any Mario Partys prior to this since the first on the N64, so perhaps the franchise is still fresh to me compared to others.

AFAIK the channel doesn't know about all games, only the ones registered in it. I've had some games I couldn't give feedback on either. Check if you can find the game with a search in the games list.

I see. And I assume there is no way for a peon like me to register something like, oh say, Godzilla Unleashed on there? Bullocks...

I'm surprised Resident Evil 4 didn't show up though.

Also, I want to do a Duck Tales game. Convince the world that a Duck Tales game needs to be made. I can’t convince anybody at Disney to let me do a Duck Tales game. How can that be?
I really hope he gets to make a DuckTales game. Maybe I could convince him to make a Darkwing Duck one as well?
