Well, Reggie did state they were making a profit off each sold:

So we have some idea, at least.

Not saying that's the actual price to produce the unit, but if it does cost $99 to manufacture I can actually see that coming much closer than you assume.

For one thing, you have to factor in the heavy R&D that went into something like the Wii, that remote I'm sure took a lot of time to perfect, while products don't advertise themselves also so you also have to factor in marketing costs. Retail chains will also take a cut of that $250 pie for doing the actual selling, so squeeze out some more money there, and you get closer and closer to the $99 point. Not enough so Nintendo probably wouldn't make a profit, but enough so that it doesn't have the huge disparity one would simply assume looking at the $99 cost (again, just assuming that might be true).

Well, I was about to rebuttal things like Nintendo driving home the complementary console aspect, as Reggie himself even swatted that down during that whole "Buy a 360 and a Wii!" "No, buy a PS3 and a Wii!" thing.

...yet the post appears to be awol.

Probably, although one could probably cite that due to Wii Sports being included, and Nintendo reaping what looks to be less, although still comparable, to the normal profit margin for a game release.

I assumed he was making a joke. If it was a 360, since they are much closer in price, sure I could understand, but making the plunge for a $600 console due to this news?

...if he wasn't joking, though, what can you do but just laugh and shrug?

Well, since this is for details on the Japanese Wii release, one would assume that they were talking about the console in that region, which won't launch with Wii Sports as it is in America.

I'm sure it was done to see early reactions to it. Had one particular color taken off in a large way (like, let's say at random, the press focused on the red and general reaction was favorable toward it) they could possible make it either the main color or an alternate that would follow after launch.

Wii = $250
Zelda: TP = $50
Red Steel (depending on reviews) = $50
Memory Card = ...*shrugs*

Total: $350+
Not bad, not great. Either Red Steel or Zelda might be pushed tell after launch, but I plan to get that "package" of stuff by the end of the year.

Same. Did it for the GCN and the DS, so the plan is to do the same for the Wii.

To that point, I wouldn't mind if they sold three packages:

- Just the Remote
- Just the Nunchuk
- Both in one package for a small discount (say $5 off or something)

Well... at least when I take the Gamecube out, it will look natural with the white Dreamcast and white Wavebirds I suppose...

I always tend to get the console in its most advertised color anyway, so that doesn't really bother me, although they should have issued it in at least one varient color like the GCN when it launched.

Unlockable Wesker for the win! He better have that "force" shove he has in RE4.

The point was that Famistu was cited before you went on your tirade about the HK magazine, and before you went as far as to say:

"I wouldn't put much faith in it especially when Capcom's... someone who's name I forgot denied the existence of Resident Evil Wii weeks ago."

That of course assumes you were going to buy Wii Sports in the first place... I for one had no intention.

Media products are always more expensive in Japan. A regular DVD release will cost you about Y4000 yen when it first comes out, while a "special edition" release (it's very common in Japan to have a regular and special release for most popular titles) will sell in the Y5000-6500 range. Videos games also cost more there too, but are actually resonably close to DVDs versus the huge discrepancy seen in the US and other markets.

So that pricing looks right.

Seems you missed it in this thread too... (and confused the hell out of me with the ramblings about the Hong Kong magazine, to the point where I assumed you simply didn't know where Famitsu was based):

"I'm stealing this from Bill (buhahaha...), but apparently the Japanese name, according to Famitsu, is going to be:

I'm stealing this from Bill (buhahaha...), but apparently the Japanese name, according to Famitsu, is going to be:

Biohazard Umbrella Chronicles

So that definitely leads credibility that Jill might be back if this either takes place before RE4, or just in general sees the rise again of Umbrella.
