Nintendo Gaming / RE: VC games: transferrable or locked?...need answers fast
« on: September 19, 2006, 07:31:35 PM »
They briefly mentioned the content being locked to the Wii it was purchased on, didn't they? I think details are scarce on this exactly, but early signs point to that not being possible (obviously for piracy issues, as if that worked one could easily distribute the files via the internet... although of course one could argue that the ROMs aren't exactly hard to find anyway).

N-Sider doesn't allow hotlinking. Here are the images for everyone who can't see them (I actually prefer the two examples over these myself, though).

Speaking of, nice to see from that picture that Square-Enix still bones people on their hand held game prices. -_- I mean, I only got Kingdom Hearts for the GBA this year as I refused to pay the near $40 it went for before it dropped down to $20 for the release of the new PS2 game.

Space is the very reason why I want them to both fail, actually. After all, would more space be nice? Sure. But technology is improving fast enough that there really is no reason to jump start yet another movie medium generation so soon. Also, let's face it, a film could definitly hog up more space on a single disc then even Blu-ray could provide if you wanted to go with the utmost quality.

In other words, the next jump is going to have to be big for me to even consider dumping DVDs now. I'm talking the convenience of an entire season of a show, with optimal quality, on a single disc with extras, or maybe even a disc that could played in one machine to see the movie and another to hear the theatrical score (although given how niche soundtracks are, that probably doesn't matter to most).

I just use ffdshow:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

It doesn't cover everything, but it has no playback issues in the numerous codecs it does support and those that aren't covered are extremely rare (I have only encountered one or two files that it couldn't play, both of which were in odd formats).

Yep, that was a by product of the old Master Hand code, as I recall. Still, the best cheat for the GS was being able to have a four player match on the Race Level (for which you had to get the damage high enough so that the characters would literally fly through the wall to lose a life... good times).

Well the overall graphic style is pretty similar; however, Strikers has a HUGE number of things happening on screen at once compared with its predecessor. I mean, that crowd around the field is just crazy.

Fully agree in this respect. At that price point, the only NES games I could see getting are Super Dodgeball and Trog for their multiplayer value, assuming they would be available. If online enabled, though, that $5 tag would be much more easy to swallow on a lot of the multiplayer titles.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: That $250 price tag again...
« on: September 17, 2006, 05:30:49 PM »
I think the problem with the price is simply perception. Nintendo never gave a price at E3, and because of that everyone and their uncle begain to speculate. Nintendo did say less than $250, but $200 became the figured price from most after famous examples like: "You could buy a Wii and a Xbox 360 for the price of a PS3" and so on. In a sense, this set the bar down to that level, and then people were dissapointed when it didn't meet that.

It's much like the PSP. Analysts were giving huge figures on what the handheld would cost, and then when it was announced for cheaper those following it actually were impressed with the price due to earlier preception. Was it still way too expensive at launch? Hell yes. But the price tag was overblown leading up to it so people weren't taken back by it.

Anyway, kind of unrelated, but I think Tycho of Penny Arcade put it best about this whole thing:
"I expected the price to come in a little lower than two-fifty, just as I think most people did, but I think they're in a tough position. I'm more than satisfied with the steep, almost treacherous price delta between it and the Xbox 400, and the difference between this product and Sony's offering is so vast that the person presented with this disparity would assume that there had been a grievous misprint in their Sunday circular. The price needs to simultaneously say that "we are not those other guys" while somehow retaining the idea that their machine is the same type of product. Plus, it's not like they have some beleaguered little twist of retail shrapnel here. People want this thing pretty bad. It's hardly extortion."

Yeah, I got an early review disc of that back last month:

Overall, it's good, but not as great as I was hoping for. Still, just nice to see the uncut version get a DVD release in the states.

Actually, if I'm understanding this correctly, I don't think that's the case. I think all Wiis will have a region, probably in the same manor that the Gamecubes do currently in terms of countries. The difference here is that, at least in the US, it sounds like companies are being allowed to make region free games (much like Hong Kong makes region 0 DVDs that can play in all markets) while Nintendo's first party offerings will be done this way; however, that's not stopping third parties from locking their game to a specific region if they want to (which might be done for legal issues, like in the case of a Jump Superstars) while other branches of Nintendo could pick to still use regions, meaning that the US Wiis still couldn't play those discs.

In other words, assuming there isn't an issue with playing a NTSC disc on a PAL Wii or a system lock out on those systems for anything with code "0", Wiis from other locations should be able to play the US first party releases no problem.

Although that's assuming I'm understanding all of this correctly and it works exactly like DVD regions do.

The thing is, the supply out there is so limited (since eBay is a worldwide market place, you also have to consider some interested European buyers and those from other regions) that it would be hard for the price not to sky rocket and still find interested bidders.

That would assume, of course, that everything is being charged at the same rate, which isn't the case. It's much in the same vein as DVD regions: these things can be very expensive in some areas, for example Japanese DVD release tend to cost double what they do in the US and other markets.

If a company has the chance to charge an area more and get away with it, they figure "why not take it"? I hate regions myself, of course, but there is logic behind it from their perspective.

I'm almost in the same boat, but replace those three titles with Smash Bros, as that game alone will be more than enough to keep me happy for a long, long time with online play.

It's going off of today's inflation so the Wii on that chart would be *drum roll* $250, just like the PS3 is $500/$600.

Exactly. Joe Average isn't even going to know one way or the other anyway. You tell someone who is a casual gamer that Sony probably lost money when they sold him his PS2, and he will likely be surprised by that fact. In the end, it simply doesn't matter.

In this vein of news reaction, I was also listening to the local talk show (Woody, Tony, and Ravey) on the radio during my commute. A lot of the time they have a video game segment near the end of the show, and today was no exception.

During the program, someone phoned in with the details on the Wii launch (price and date) and later someone phoned in asking what that price was, and was then very estatic on the phone when they told him "$250 with Wii Sports". Unfortunately, those were the only two times the system was mentioned during the whole segment. :-S

I'm still floored at the amount of hype the PS3 is generating too, which seems to come mostly from casuals (considering the interest in Madden during most of these segments, I'd say this is a prime example of that market). Like someone else said, it's probably going to take them actually walking into the store and seeing the $600 price first hand before they finally go: "whoa... is it really worth that much to me?"

I know that was the case for the N64 (it being planned for that price, selling in Japan for that price, and then NOA having to convince the rest of the company that it needed the $200 price point in the US), but I can't recall that being the case for the Gamecube. Could just be my memory, though.
